Abstract:We present novel mathematical models for inventory management within a reverse logistics system. Technological advancements, sustainability initiatives, and evolving customer behaviours have significantly increased the demand for repaired products. Our models account for varying demand levels for newly produced and repaired items. To optimize overall costs with constrained scenarios, we formulated mixed integer programming problems. Solution procedures for the proposed problems are introduced, and the accuracy of these solutions has been validated through numerical experiments. Additionally, we address the cost of waste disposal as an environmental concern. This paper develops a multiobjective mathematical model and provides an algorithm for the Pareto solution. Various scalarization techniques are utilized to identify the Pareto front, and a comparison of these techniques is presented.
Optimization and Control
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper mainly discusses how to improve inventory management in reverse logistics systems with environmental impacts through multi-objective optimization. With technological advancements, sustainability initiatives, and changes in consumer behavior, the demand for repairing products has significantly increased. The paper proposes a new mathematical model that considers the demand for newly produced and repaired items at different periods and optimizes the total cost through mixed integer programming. The model considers waste disposal costs as part of the environmental issue, aiming to minimize both inventory costs and waste disposal costs, thus transforming the problem into a multi-objective problem. The study proposes an algorithm to find Pareto optimal solutions and compares the effectiveness of different scalarization techniques in identifying the Pareto frontier. The main contributions of the paper are as follows: 1. Developing an efficient material flow model that considers different demands and waste costs. 2. Introducing new mathematical expressions to calculate the total cost function of the reverse logistics system, including optimizing batch sizes and cycles. 3. Considering waste disposal to reduce environmental impacts. 4. Designing a multi-objective function model and simultaneously minimizing conflicting functions using different scalarization techniques. 5. Designing a solution process and implementing it through numerical experiments. The paper validates the proposed model and methods through numerical experiments and conducts sensitivity analysis to evaluate the influence of parameter variations on the optimal solution. Furthermore, it discusses multi-objective optimization problems and approximates the Pareto frontier using two scalarization techniques (feasible value constraint method and Pareto-based scalarization method). In conclusion, this study aims to improve the efficiency of reverse logistics systems and reduce environmental impacts through multi-objective optimization methods, providing new strategies for inventory management and environmental protection.
