Abstract:Let Mn(R) be the linear space of all n×n matrices over the real field R. For any A∈Mn(R), let ρ(A) and ‖A‖∞ denote the spectral radius and the infinity norm of A, respectively. By introducing a class of transformations φa on Mn(R), we show that, for any A∈Mn(R), ρ(A)<‖A‖∞ if φ‖A‖∞n(A)=0. If A∈Mn(R) is nonnegative, we prove that ρ(A)<‖A‖∞ if and only if φ‖A‖∞n(A)=0, and ρ(A)=‖A‖∞ if and only if the transformation φ‖A‖∞ preserves the spectral radius and the infinity norm of A. As an application, we investigate a class of linear discrete dynamic systems in the form of X(k+1)=AX(k). The asymptotical stability of the zero solution of the system is established by a simple algebraic method.

Abstract:We present a spectral analysis for matrix scaling and operator scaling. We prove that if the input matrix or operator has a spectral gap, then a natural gradient flow has linear convergence. This implies that a simple gradient descent algorithm also has linear convergence under the same assumption. The spectral gap condition for operator scaling is closely related to the notion of quantum expander studied in quantum information theory. The spectral analysis also provides bounds on some important quantities of the scaling problems, such as the condition number of the scaling solution and the capacity of the matrix and operator. These bounds can be used in various applications of scaling problems, including matrix scaling on expander graphs, permanent lower bounds on random matrices, the Paulsen problem on random frames, and Brascamp-Lieb constants on random operators. In some applications, the inputs of interest satisfy the spectral condition and we prove significantly stronger bounds than the worst case bounds.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, Volume 45, Issue 1, Page 585-600, March 2024. It is widely believed that typical finite families of [math] matrices admit finite products that attain the joint spectral radius. This conjecture is supported by computational experiments and it naturally leads to the following question: are these spectrum maximizing products typically unique, up to cyclic permutations and powers? We answer this question negatively. As discovered by Horowitz around fifty years ago, there are products of matrices that always have the same spectral radius despite not being cyclic permutations of one another. We show that the simplest Horowitz products can be spectrum maximizing in a robust way; more precisely, we exhibit a small but nonempty open subset of pairs of [math] matrices [math] for which the products [math] and [math] are both spectrum maximizing.

Abstract:The interplay between the algebraic and analytic properties of a matrix and the geometric properties of its pseudospectrum is investigated. It is shown that one can characterize Hermitian matrices, positive semi-definite matrices, orthogonal projections, unitary matrices, etc. in terms of the pseudospectrum. Also, characterizations are given to maps on matrices leaving invariant the pseudospectrum of the sum, difference, or product of matrix pairs. It is shown that such a map is always a unitary similarity transform followed by some simple operations such as adding a constant matrix, taking the matrix transpose, or multiplying by a scalar in {1,-1}.

Abstract:We give a unified and systematic way to find bounds for the largest real eigenvalue of a nonnegative matrix by considering its modified quotient matrix. We leverage this insight to identify the unique class of matrices whose largest real eigenvalue is maximum among all $(0,1)$-matrices with a specified number of ones. This result resolves a problem that was posed independently by R. Brualdi and A. Hoffman, as well as F. Friedland, back in 1985.

Abstract:Consider a square random matrix with independent and identically distributed entries of mean zero and unit variance. We show that as the dimension tends to infinity, the spectral radius is equivalent to the square root of the dimension in probability. This result can also be seen as the convergence of the support in the circular law theorem under optimal moment conditions. In the proof we establish the convergence in law of the reciprocal characteristic polynomial to a random analytic function outside the unit disc, related to a hyperbolic Gaussian analytic function. The proof is short and differs from the usual approaches for the spectral radius. It relies on a tightness argument and a joint central limit phenomenon for traces of fixed powers.

Abstract:In this paper, we have explored the impact of certain indices-dependent element-wise transformations on the null space of a matrix. We have found the conditions on this transformation that will preserve the rank and nullity of the original matrix. We have also found some transformations which give localized null vectors for the transformed matrix. Finally, some possible applications of these localized null vectors and eigenvalues are mentioned in different domains.

Abstract:We thoroughly analyse the double-layer potential's role in approaches to spectral sets in the spirit of Delyon--Delyon, Crouzeix and Crouzeix--Palencia. While the potential is well-studied, we aim to clarify on several of its aspects in light of these references. In particular, we illustrate how the associated integral operators can be used to characterize the convexity of the domain and the inclusion of the numerical range in its closure. We furthermore give a direct proof of a result by Putinar--Sandberg -- a generalization of Berger--Stampfli's mapping theorem -- circumventing dilation theory. Finally, we show for matrices that any smooth domain whose closure contains the numerical range admits a spectral constant only depending on the extremal function and vector. This constant is consistent with the so far best known absolute bound $1+\sqrt{2}$.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper we study ergodic optimization and multifractal behavior of Lyapunov exponents for matrix cocycles. We show that the restricted variational principle holds for generic cocycles [in the sense of (Bonatti and Viana in Ergod Theory Dyn Syst 24(5):1295–1330, 2004)] over mixing subshifts of finite type. Abstract:Compared to the entrywise transforms which preserve positive semidefiniteness, those leaving invariant the inertia of symmetric matrices reveal a surprising rigidity. We first obtain the classification of negativity preservers by combining recent advances in matrix analysis with some novel arguments using well chosen test matrices. We continue with the analogous classification in the multi-variable setting, revealing a striking separation of variables, with absolute monotonicity on one side and homotheties on the other. We conclude with the complex analogue of this result.
