Abstract:In this work we study the existence of surjective Nash maps between two given semialgebraic sets S and T . Some key ingredients are: the irreducible components S i ⁎ of S (and their intersections), the analytic path-connected components T j of T (and their intersections) and the relations between dimensions of the semialgebraic sets S i ⁎ and T j . A first step to approach the previous problem is the former characterization done by the second author of the images of affine spaces under Nash maps. The core result of this article to obtain a criterion to decide about the existence of surjective Nash maps between two semialgebraic sets is: a full characterization of the semialgebraic subsets S ⊂ R n that are the image of the closed unit ball B ‾ m of R m centered at the origin under a Nash map f : R m → R n . The necessary and sufficient conditions that must satisfy such a semialgebraic set S are: it is compact, connected by analytic paths and has dimension d ≤ m . Two remarkable consequences of the latter result are the following: (1) pure dimensional compact irreducible arc-symmetric semialgebraic sets of dimension d are Nash images of B ‾ d , and (2) compact semialgebraic sets of dimension d are projections of non-singular algebraic sets of dimension d whose connected components are Nash diffeomorphic to spheres (maybe of different dimensions).

Commutative N-polyregular functions

Abstract:This paper addresses two questions regarding N-polyregular functions, that forms a proper subset of N-rational series. We show that given a Z-rational series, it is decidable whether it is computable via a commutative N-polyregular function, and provide a counter-example to the theorem of Karhumäki that studied the same question in the case of polynomials. We also prove that it is decidable whether a commutative N-polyregular function is star-free, by proving the stronger statement that star-free Z-polyregular functions that are N-polyregular are in fact computable using a star-free N-polyregular function. Building towards answering the same questions in the non-commutative case, we present a canonical model of computation of N-polyregular functions by generalizing the notion of residual transducers previously introduced in Z-polyregular functions.

Abstract:Given an uncountable algebraically closed field $K$, we proved that if partially defined function $f\colon K \times \dots \times K \dashrightarrow K$ defined on a Zariski open subset of the $n$-fold Cartesian product $K \times \dots \times K$ is rational in each coordinate whilst other coordinates are held constant, then $f$ is itself a rational function in $n$-variables.

Abstract:A fundamental construction in formal language theory is the Myhill-Nerode congruence on words, whose finitedness characterizes regular language. This construction was generalized to functions from $\Sigma^*$ to $\mathbb{Z}$ by Colcombet, Douéneau-Tabot, and Lopez to characterize the class of so-called $\mathbb{Z}$-polyregular functions. In this paper, we relax the notion of equivalence relation to quasi-ordering in order to study the class of $\mathbb{N}$-polyregular functions, that plays the role of $\mathbb{Z}$-polyregular functions among functions from $\Sigma^*$ to $\mathbb{N}$. The analogue of having a finite index is then being a well-quasi-ordering. This provides a canonical object to describe $\mathbb{N}$-polyregular functions, together with a powerful new characterization of this class.

Pawlucki: I) The non regular locus of a complex or real analytic map is an analytic set. II) The set of semianalytic or Nash points of a subanalytic set X is a subanalytic set, whose complement has codimension two in X.

Rational sets in virtually abelian groups: languages and growth

Abstract:In this paper we generalise and unify the results and methods used by Benson, Liardet, Evetts, and Evetts & Levine, to show that rational sets in a virtually abelian group G have rational (relative) growth series with respect to any generating set for G. We prove equivalences between the structures used in the literature, and establish the rationality of important classes of sets in G: definable sets, algebraic sets, conjugacy representatives and coset representatives (of any fixed subgroup), among others. Furthermore, we show that any rational set, when written as words over the generating set of G, has several EDT0L representations.

Abstract:Let G be a semiabelian variety defined over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic 0. Let Φ : G ⇢ G be a dominant rational self-map. Assume that an iterate Φ m : G → G is regular for some m ⩾ 1 and that there exists no non-constant homomorphism τ : G ⟶ G 0 of semiabelian varieties such that τ ∘ Φ m k = τ for some k ⩾ 1 . We show that under these assumptions Φ itself must be a regular. We also prove a variant of this assertion in prime characteristic and present examples showing that our results are sharp.

Abstract:We investigate semiconjugate rational functions, that is rational functions $A,$ $B$ related by the functional equation $A\circ X=X\circ B$, where $X$ is a rational function of degree at least two. We show that if $A$ and $B$ is a pair of such functions, then either $B$ can be obtained from $A$ by a certain iterative process, or $A$ and $B$ can be described in terms of orbifolds of non-negative Euler characteristic on the Riemann sphere.

Arithmetic and birational properties of linear spaces on intersections of two quadrics

Abstract:We study rationality questions for Fano schemes of linear spaces on smooth complete intersections of two quadrics, especially over non-closed fields. Our approach is to study hyperbolic reductions of the pencil of quadrics associated to $X$. We prove that the Fano schemes $F_r(X)$ of $r$-planes are birational to symmetric powers of hyperbolic reductions, generalizing results of Reid and Colliot-Th\'el\`ene--Sansuc--Swinnerton-Dyer, and we give several applications to rationality properties of $F_r(X)$. For instance, we show that if $X$ contains an $(r+1)$-plane over a field $k$, then $F_r(X)$ is rational over $k$. When $X$ has odd dimension, we show a partial converse for rationality of the Fano schemes of second maximal linear spaces, generalizing results of Hassett--Tschinkel and Benoist--Wittenberg. When $X$ has even dimension, the analogous result does not hold, and we further investigate this situation over the real numbers. In particular, we prove a rationality criterion for the Fano schemes of second maximal linear spaces on these even-dimensional complete intersections over $\mathbb R$; this may be viewed as extending work of Hassett--Koll\'ar--Tschinkel.

In this article we survey a variety of results about rational inner functions related to interpolation, sums of squares formulas, and boundary behavior. We mostly focus on two variables however in the final section we discuss higher dimensions.

Abstract:The omega-regular separability problem for Büchi VASS coverability languages has recently been shown to be decidable, but with an EXPSPACE lower and a non-primitive recursive upper bound -- the exact complexity remained open. We close this gap and show that the problem is EXPSPACE-complete. A careful analysis of our complexity bounds additionally yields a PSPACE procedure in the case of fixed dimension >= 1, which matches a pre-established lower bound of PSPACE for one dimensional Büchi VASS. Our algorithm is a non-deterministic search for a witness whose size, as we show, can be suitably bounded. Part of the procedure is to decide the existence of runs in VASS that satisfy certain non-linear properties. Therefore, a key technical ingredient is to analyze a class of systems of inequalities where one variable may occur in non-linear (polynomial) expressions. These so-called singly non-linear systems (SNLS) take the form A(x).y >= b(x), where A(x) and b(x) are a matrix resp. a vector whose entries are polynomials in x, and y ranges over vectors in the rationals. Our main contribution on SNLS is an exponential upper bound on the size of rational solutions to singly non-linear systems. The proof consists of three steps. First, we give a tailor-made quantifier elimination to characterize all real solutions to x. Second, using the root separation theorem about the distance of real roots of polynomials, we show that if a rational solution exists, then there is one with at most polynomially many bits. Third, we insert the solution for x into the SNLS, making it linear and allowing us to invoke standard solution bounds from convex geometry. Finally, we combine the results about SNLS with several techniques from the area of VASS to devise an EXPSPACE decision procedure for omega-regular separability of Büchi VASS.

The Geometry of Locally Bounded Rational Functions

Abstract:This paper develops the geometry of locally bounded rational functions on non-singular real algebraic varieties. First various basic geometric and algebraic results regarding these functions are established in any dimension, culminating with a version of Łojasiewicz's inequality. The geometry is further developed for the case of dimension 2, where it can be shown that there exist many of the usual correspondences between the algebra and geometry of these functions that one expects from complex algebraic geometry and from other classes of functions in real algebraic geometry such as regulous functions.

Rationality and arithmetic of the moduli of abelian varieties

Abstract:We study the rationality properties of the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_g$ of principally polarised abelian $g$-folds over $\mathbb{Q}$ and apply the results to arithmetic questions. In particular we show that any principally polarised abelian threefold over $\mathbb{F}_p$ may be lifted to an abelian variety over $\mathbb{Q}$. This is a phenomenon of low dimension: assuming the Bombieri-Lang conjecture we also show that this is not the case for abelian varieties of dimension at least seven. About moduli spaces, we show that $\mathcal{A}_g$ is unirational over $\mathbb{Q}$ for $g \leq 5$ and stably rational for $g=3$. This also allows us to make unconditional one of the results of Masser and Zannier about the existence of abelian varieties over $\mathbb{Q}$ that are not isogenous to Jacobians.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, using a generalization of the notion of Prym variety for covers of projective varieties, we prove a structure theorem for the Mordell–Weil group of abelian varieties over function fields that are twists of abelian varieties by Galois covers of smooth projective varieties. In particular, the results we obtain contribute to the construction of Jacobians of high rank.

Abstract:We prove that the equality problem is decidable for rational subsets of the monogenic free inverse monoid F. It is also decidable whether or not a rational subset of F is recognizable. We prove that a submonoid of F is rational if and only if it is finitely generated. We also prove that the membership problem for rational subsets of a finite J -above monoid is decidable, covering the case of free inverse monoids.

Abstract:In this paper we homologically construct a (functorial) BGG resolution of the finite-dimensional simple module of the nilBrauer algebra by using infinity-categorical methods following the reconstruction-from-stratification philosophy, e.g. appearing in Ayala-Mazel-Gee-Rozenblyum. To do so, we prove a fact of independent interest, that half of the nilBrauer algebra is Koszul. This BGG resolution categorifies a character formula of Brundan-Wang-Webster. More generally, we have a (functorial) ``BGG spectral sequence'' which converges to any desired module; this spectral sequence is secretly a resolution when the desired module is finite-dimensional. This spectral sequence also categorifies the character formulae of Brundan-Wang-Webster for any (possibly infinite-dimensional) simple module. We expect the methods used here for producing BGG resolutions to be applicable to other (graded) triangular-based algebras also, especially diagrammatic ones.

Counting Unimodular Lattices in $\R^{r,s}$

Abstract:Narain lattices are unimodular lattices {\it in} $\R^{r,s}$, subject to certain natural equivalence relation and rationality condition. The problem of describing and counting these rational equivalence classes of Narain lattices in $\R^{2,2}$ has led to an interesting connection to binary forms and their Gauss products, as shown in [HLOYII]. As a sequel, in this paper, we study arbitrary rational Narain lattices and generalize some of our earlier results. In particular in the case of $\R^{2,2}$, a new interpretation of the Gauss product of binary forms brings new light to a number of related objects -- rank 4 rational Narain lattices, over-lattices, rank 2 primitive sublattices of an abstract rank 4 even unimodular lattice $U^2$, and isomorphisms of discriminant groups of rank 2 lattices.
