Abstract:A structure of spherical white dwarfs is calculated for a non-zero temperature. It is shown that the thermodynamical stability of the white dwarf stars can be described naturally within the concept of the Helmholtz free energy of the Coulomb fully ionized electron-ion plasma.

Abstract:We study the effect of having a finite temperature on the equation of state and structure of a white dwarf. In order to keep the treatment as general as possible we carry on our discussion for ideal quantum gases obeying to both the Fermi-Dirac and the Bose-Einstein statistics even if we will only use the results for the free electron gas inside a white dwarf. We discuss the effect of temperature on the stability of the star and on the Fermi hole.

Abstract:In this work, cold and hot, static and rotating white dwarf stars are investigated within the framework of classical physics, employing the Chandrasekhar equation of state. The main parameters of white dwarfs such as the central density, pressure, total mass and radius are calculated fulfilling the stability criteria for hot rotating stars. To construct rotating configurations the Hartle approach is involved. It is shown that the effects of finite temperatures become crucial in low-mass white dwarfs, whereas rotation is relevant in all mass range. The simultaneous accounting for temperature and rotation is critical in the calculation of the radii of white dwarfs. The results obtained in this work can be applied to explain a variety of observational data for white dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Releases.

Abstract:This paper reviews the physics of stars, the type, structure, evolution and stability. Simple thermodynamics and statistical mechanics are used to show the inner working of white dwarf and neutron stars. The major concentration of the paper will be on white dwarf stars although in some places references will also be made to neutron stars where the relations can be extended easily. It can be shown that a maximum mass limit is attached to each type of star which can be derived rigorously. Maximum entropy can be used to show that the gravitational contraction is balanced by the degeneracy pressure created by the electrons in the case of white dwarfs, and neutrons and protons which constitute the matter of the neutron star. Finally the kinetic equations which describe the luminosity of the star and the radiative transfer are introduced.

Abstract:Massive, highly magnetized white dwarfs with fields up to $10^9$ G have been observed and theoretically used for the description of a variety of astrophysical phenomena. Ultramagnetized white dwarfs with uniform interior fields up to $10^{18}$ G, have been recently purported to obey a new maximum mass limit, $M_{\rm max}\approx 2.58~M_\odot$, which largely overcomes the traditional Chandrasekhar value, $M_{\rm Ch}\approx 1.44~M_\odot$. Such a much larger limit would make these astrophysical objects viable candidates for the explanation of the superluminous population of type Ia supernovae. We show that several macro and micro physical aspects such as gravitational, dynamical stability, breaking of spherical symmetry, general relativity, inverse $\beta$-decay, and pycnonuclear fusion reactions are of most relevance for the self-consistent description of the structure and assessment of stability of these objects. It is shown in this work that the first family of magnetized white dwarfs indeed satisfy all the criteria of stability, while the ultramagnetized white dwarfs are very unlikely to exist in nature since they violate minimal requests of stability. Therefore, the canonical Chandrasekhar mass limit of white dwarfs has to be still applied.

Abstract:The properties of uniformly rotating white dwarfs (RWDs) are analyzed within the framework of Newton's gravity and general relativity. In both cases Hartle's formalism is applied to construct the internal and external solutions to the field equations. The white dwarf (WD) matter is described by the Chandrasekhar equation of state. The region of stability of RWDs is constructed taking into account the mass-shedding limit, inverse $\beta$-decay instability, and the boundary established by the turning points of constant angular momentum $J$ sequences which separates stable from secularly unstable configurations. We found the minimum rotation period $\sim0.28$ s in both cases and maximum rotating masses $\sim1.534 M_{\odot}$ and $\sim1.516 M_{\odot}$ for the Newtonian and general relativistic WDs, respectively. By using the turning point method we show that general relativistic WDs can indeed be axisymmetrically unstable whereas the Newtonian WDs are stable.

The chapter also highlights the instrumental role of white dwarfs in other areas of astronomy.

Abstract:ABSTRACT We present an accurate analytic approximation for the energy of a quantum one-component Coulomb liquid of ions in a uniform electron background that has been recently calculated from first principles. The approximation enables us to develop in an analytic form a complete thermodynamic description of quantum ions in a practically important range of mass densities at temperatures above crystallization. We show that ionic quantum effects in liquid cores of white dwarfs (WDs) affect heat capacity, cooling, thermal compressibility, pulsation frequencies, and radii of sufficiently cold WDs, especially with relatively massive helium and carbon cores.

Thermodynamics of frozen stars

Abstract:The frozen star is a recent proposal for a non-singular solution of Einstein's equations that describes an ultracompact object which closely resembles a black hole from an external perspective. The frozen star is also meant to be an alternative, classical description of an earlier proposal, the highly quantum polymer model. Here, we show that the thermodynamic properties of frozen stars closely resemble those of black holes: Frozen stars radiate thermally, with a temperature and an entropy that are perturbatively close to those of black holes of the same mass. Their entropy is calculated using the Euclidean-action method of Gibbons and Hawking. We then discuss their dynamical formation by estimating the probability for a collapsing shell of "normal" matter to transition, quantum mechanically, into a frozen star. This calculation followed from a reinterpretation of a transitional region between the Euclidean frozen star and its Schwarzschild exterior as a Euclidean instanton that mediates a phase transition from the Minkowski interior of an incipient Schwarzschild black hole to a microstate of the frozen star interior. It is shown that, up to negligible corrections, the probability of this transition is $e^{-A/4}$, with $A$ being the star's surface area. Taking into account that the dimension of the phase space is $e^{+A/4}$, we conclude that the total probability for the formation of the frozen star is of order unity. The duration of this transition is estimated, which we then use to argue, relying on an analogy to previous results, about the scaling of the magnitude of the off-diagonal corrections to the number operator for the Hawking-like particles. Such scaling was shown to imply that the corresponding Page curve indeed starts to go down at about the Page time, as required by unitarity.

Abstract:Static and uniformly rotating, cold and hot white dwarfs are investigated both in Newtonian gravity and general theory of relativity, employing the well-known Chandrasekhar equation of state. The mass-radius, mass-central density, radius-central density etc relations of stable white dwarfs with $\mu=A/Z=2$ and $\mu=56/26$ (where $A$ is the average atomic weight and $Z$ is the atomic charge) are constructed for different temperatures. It is shown that near the maximum mass the mass of hot rotating white dwarfs is slightly less than for cold rotating white dwarfs, though for static white dwarfs the situation is opposite.

Abstract:White dwarfs and neutron stars are stellar objects with masses comparable to that of our sun. However, as the endpoint stages of stellar evolution, these objects do not sustain any thermonuclear burning and therefore can no longer support the gravitational load of their own mass by generating thermal pressure. Rather, matter in their interiors is compressed to much higher densities than commonly found in normal stars, and pressure is created by degenerate fermion kinetic energy and particle interactions. As a result, white dwarfs and neutron stars offer unique cosmic laboratories for studying matter at very high densities. In this review we discuss the basic properties of condensed matter at extreme densities and summarize the extent to which these properties can be examined by observations of compact objects.

Abstract:Abridged. White dwarf stars are the final evolutionary stage of the vast majority of stars, including our Sun. The study of white dwarfs has potential applications to different fields of astrophysics. In particular, they can be used as independent reliable cosmic clocks, and can also provide valuable information about the fundamental parameters of a wide variety of stellar populations, like our Galaxy and open and globular clusters. In addition, the high densities and temperatures characterizing white dwarfs allow to use these stars as cosmic laboratories for studying physical processes under extreme conditions that cannot be achieved in terrestrial laboratories. They can be used to constrain fundamental properties of elementary particles such as axions and neutrinos, and to study problems related to the variation of fundamental constants. In this work, we review the essentials of the physics of white dwarf stars. Special emphasis is placed on the physical processes that lead to the formation of white dwarfs as well as on the different energy sources and processes responsible for chemical abundance changes that occur along their evolution. Moreover, in the course of their lives, white dwarfs cross different pulsational instability strips. The existence of these instability strips provides astronomers with an unique opportunity to peer into their internal structure that would otherwise remain hidden from observers. We will show that this allows to measure with unprecedented precision the stellar masses and to infer their envelope thicknesses, to probe the core chemical stratification, and to detect rotation rates and magnetic fields. Consequently, in this work, we also review the pulsational properties of white dwarfs and the most recent applications of white dwarf asteroseismology.

Abstract:Super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs are a timely topic in the last years in the scientific community due to its connection to supernovae type Ia (SN Ia). Some early studies tackled the possibility of white dwarfs surpassing the Chandrasekhar limit by means of a magnetic field. More recently, modified gravity has been highlighted as the reason for these stars to surpass the Chandrasekhar limit and becoming a supernova progenitor. However, in general simple assumptions are considered for the stellar structure and equation of state (EoS), which can lead to unreliable conclusions. In this work, we want to be rigorous and consider a realistic EoS to describe the white dwarfs in general relativity and modified gravity, taking into account nuclear instabilities that limit the maximum mass.

Abstract:White dwarf, one of the compact objects in the universe, is not only pivotal for astrophysical inquiries but also furnishes a dynamic arena for nuclear physics exploration. In this work, we extend the relativistic mean field approach using a Walecka-type quantum hadrodynamics model to encapsulate the intricate structure of white dwarfs. This methodological advancement facilitates a cohesive analysis of white dwarfs, neutron stars, and the nuclear pasta within a unified theoretical framework. By meticulously calibrating the model parameters to nuclear matter properties, we successfully replicate the structures of various nuclei, such as $^{4}\rm He$, isotopes of $\rm C$, and $^{16}\rm O$. Subsequently, we predict the properties of white dwarfs composed of atom-like units and the gravitational waves stemming from binary white dwarf inspirals incorporating tidal deformability contributions up to the 2.5 post-Newtonian order. These results shed light on the structure of white dwarfs and offer more clues for future gravitational wave detection.

Abstract:We calculated a grid of evolutionary models for white dwarfs with helium cores (He-WDs) and investigated the occurrence of hydrogen-shell flashes due to unstable hydrogen burning via CNO cycling. Our calculations show that such thermal instabilities are restricted to a certain mass range (M=0.21...0.30Msun), consistent with earlier studies. Models within this mass range undergo the more hydrogen shell flashes the less massive they are. This is caused by the strong dependence of the envelope mass on the white dwarf core mass. The maximum luminosities from hydrogen burning during the flashes are of the order of 10^5 Lsun. Because of the development of a pulse-driven convection zone whose upper boundary temporarily reaches the surface layers, the envelope's hydrogen content decreases by Delta(X)=0.06 per flash. Our study further shows that an additional high mass-loss episode during a flash-driven Roche lobe overflow to the white dwarf's companion does not affect the final cooling behaviour of the models. Independent of hydrogen shell flashes the evolution along the final white dwarf cooling branch is determined by hydrogen burning via pp-reactions down to effective temperatures as low as 8000 K.

On the crystallization onset in white dwarfs

Abstract:Thermal evolution of the central region of a $0.9 \, M_\odot$ C/O white dwarf at the initial stage of the ion mixture crystallization is studied by numerically solving the heat equation on a fine spatial and temporal grid and by including a detailed treatment of the latent heat release. Formation of two spherical shells is observed. The outer one surrounds a region where crystallization has begun. The inner one bounds a fully solidified core which has exhausted its latent heat. The region between the shells is partially liquid and partially solid. It gradually emits the latent heat of crystallization and also it releases light elements (carbon) in the process of element redistribution, accompanying the mixture solidification. Assuming that all released light elements cross the outer shell, we have estimated their flux induced by the mixture crystallization. The resulting flux is not divergent and is much smaller than an estimate derived from the growth rate of the fully crystallized core.

Abstract:In both canonical ensemble and grand canonical ensemble, the thermodynamic stability and phase structure of Einstein-Euler-Heisenberg-AdS black hole are studied. We derive the Hawking temperature, Helmholtz free energy, Gibbs potential, entropy and heat capacity of the black holes. We compute the minimum temperature to find that the phase transition may happen at the lowest point. The entropy-temperature diagram consists of two parts. The upper part belonging to the large black holes under the influence from the electromagnetic self-interactions keeps the positive heat capacity, leading the huge compact objects to survive. The lower curves corresponding to the small ones show that the heat capacity of the tiny black holes is negative, which means that the nonlinear-effect-corrected smaller sources will evaporate. The further discussions show that the nonlinear effect modifies the thermodynamic quantities, but the corrections limited by the nonlinear factor with allowed values can not change the properties and the phase structure fundamentally and thoroughly. We argue that the influence from self-interaction can not make the Einstein-Euler-Heisenberg-AdS black holes to split under the second law of thermodynamics.

Dynamic and Thermodynamic Stability of Charged Perfect Fluid Stars

Abstract:We perform a thorough analysis of the dynamic and thermodynamic stability for the charged perfect fluid star by applying the Wald formalism to the Lagrangian formulation of Einstein-Maxwell-charged fluid system. As a result, we find that neither the presence of the additional electromagnetic field nor the Lorentz force experienced by the charged fluid makes any obstruction to the key steps towards the previous results obtained for the neutral perfect fluid star. Therefore, the criterion for the dynamic stability of our charged star in dynamic equilibrium within the symplectic complement of the trivial perturbaions with the ADM $3$-momentum unchanged is given by the non-negativity of the canonical energy associated with the timelike Killing field, where it is further shown for both non-axisymmetric and axisymmetric perturbations that the dynamic stability against these restricted perturbations also implies the dynamic stability against more generic perturbations. On the other hand, the necessary condition for the thermodynamic stability of our charged star in thermodynamic equilibrium is given by the positivity of the canonical energy of all the linear on-shell perturbations with the ADM angular momentum unchanged in the comoving frame, which is equivalent to the positivity of the canonical energy associated with the timelike Killing field when restricted onto the axisymmetric perturbations. As a by-product, we further establish the equivalence of the dynamic and thermodynamic stability with respect to the spherically symmetric perturbations of the static, spherically symmetric isentropic charged star.

Abstract:White dwarfs are stellar remnants devoid of a nuclear energy source, gradually cooling over billions of years and eventually freezing into a solid state from the inside out. Recently, it was discovered that a population of freezing white dwarfs maintains a constant luminosity for a duration comparable to the age of the universe, signaling the presence of a powerful yet unknown energy source that inhibits the cooling. For certain core compositions, the freezing process is predicted to trigger a solid-liquid distillation mechanism, due to the solid phase being depleted in heavy impurities. The crystals thus formed are buoyant and float up, thereby displacing heavier liquid downward and releasing gravitational energy. Here we show that distillation interrupts the cooling for billions of years and explains all the observational properties of the unusual delayed population. With a steady luminosity surpassing that of some main-sequence stars, these white dwarfs defy their conventional portrayal as dead stars. Our results highlight the existence of peculiar merger remnants and have profound implications for the use of white dwarfs in dating stellar populations.

Abstract:This study is aimed at providing a thorough analysis of the classical thermodynamic stability of black holes within the Anti-de Sitter (AdS) family. We utilize the Nambu bracket formalism to calculate local heat capacities and employ Sylvester's criterion in the mass-energy ensemble to determine both local and global thermodynamic stability regions. Emphasizing the crucial role of the cosmological constant, we establish the conditions necessary for the existence of thermodynamically stable black hole configurations. Our work highlights the applicability of classical thermodynamics in understanding black hole physics, while acknowledging the potential deviations that may impact the observables of the system beyond the classical level.

On excess entropy and latent heat in crystallizing white dwarfs

Abstract:Based on the linear mixing approach, we calculate the latent heat for crystallizing fully-ionized $^{12}$C/$^{16}$O and $^{16}$O/$^{20}$Ne mixtures in white dwarf (WD) cores for two different parametrizations of the corrections to the linear-mixing energies and with account of ion quantum effects. We report noticeable composition-dependent deviations of the excess entropy in both directions from the standard value of 0.77 per ion. Within the same framework, we evaluate the excess entropy and released or absorbed heat accompanying the exsolution process in solidified WD layers. The inclusion of this effect is shown to be important for reliable interpretation of WD cooling data. We also analyze the latent heat of crystallizing eutectic $^{12}$C/$^{22}$Ne mixture, where we find a qualitative dependence of both the phase diagram and the latent heat behaviour on ion quantum effects. This may be important for the model with $^{22}$Ne distillation in cooling C/O/$^{22}$Ne WD proposed as a solution for the ultramassive WD multi-Gyr cooling anomaly. Astrophysical implications of our findings for crystallizing WD are discussed.
