Abstract:Gr{ö}bner bases is one the most powerful tools in algorithmic non-linear algebra. Their computation is an intrinsically hard problem with a complexity at least single exponential in the number of variables. However, in most of the cases, the polynomial systems coming from applications have some kind of structure. For example , several problems in computer-aided design, robotics, vision, biology , kinematics, cryptography, and optimization involve sparse systems where the input polynomials have a few non-zero terms. Our approach to exploit sparsity is to embed the systems in a semigroup algebra and to compute Gr{ö}bner bases over this algebra. Up to now, the algorithms that follow this approach benefit from the sparsity only in the case where all the polynomials have the same sparsity structure, that is the same Newton polytope. We introduce the first algorithm that overcomes this restriction. Under regularity assumptions, it performs no redundant computations. Further, we extend this algorithm to compute Gr{ö}bner basis in the standard algebra and solve sparse polynomials systems over the torus $(C*)^n$. The complexity of the algorithm depends on the Newton polytopes.

Abstract:We give a criterion for a collection of polynomials to be a universal Gröbner basis for an ideal in terms of the multidegree of the closure of the corresponding affine variety in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^N$. This criterion can be used to give simple proofs of several existing results on universal Gröbner bases. We introduce fine Schubert polynomials, which record the multidegrees of the closures of matrix Schubert varieties in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^{n^2}$. We compute the fine Schubert polynomials of permutations $w$ where the coefficients of the Schubert polynomials of $w$ and $w^{-1}$ are all either 0 or 1, and we use this to give a universal Gröbner basis for the ideal of the matrix Schubert variety of such a permutation.

Abstract:We generalize signature Gröbner bases, previously studied in the free algebra over a field or polynomial rings over a ring, to ideals in the mixed algebra $R[x_1,...,x_k]\langle y_1,\dots,y_n \rangle$ where $R$ is a principal ideal domain. We give an algorithm for computing them, combining elements from the theory of commutative and noncommutative (signature) Gröbner bases, and prove its correctness. Applications include extensions of the free algebra with commutative variables, e.g., for homogenization purposes or for performing ideal theoretic operations such as intersections, and computations over $\mathbb{Z}$ as universal proofs over fields of arbitrary characteristic. By extending the signature cover criterion to our setting, our algorithm also lifts some technical restrictions from previous noncommutative signature-based algorithms, now allowing, e.g., elimination orderings. We provide a prototype implementation for the case when $R$ is a field, and show that our algorithm for the mixed algebra is more efficient than classical approaches using existing algorithms.

Abstract:In this work, linearized multivariate skew polynomials over division rings are introduced. Such polynomials are right linear over the corresponding centralizer and generalize linearized polynomial rings over finite fields, group rings or differential polynomial rings. Their natural evaluation is connected to the remainder-based evaluation of free multivariate skew polynomials. It is shown that P-independent sets are those given by right linearly independent sets when partitioned into conjugacy classes. Hence finitely generated P-closed sets correspond to lists of finite-dimensional right vector spaces, extending Lam and Leroy's results on univariate skew polynomials. It is also shown that products of free multivariate skew polynomials translate into coordinate-wise compositions of linearized multivariate skew polynomials, which in turn translate into matrix products over the corresponding centralizers. Later, linearized multivariate Vandermonde matrices are introduced, which generalize multivariate Vandermonde, Moore and Wronskian matrices. The previous results explicitly give their ranks in general. P-Galois extensions of division rings are then introduced, which generalize classical (finite) Galois extensions. Three Galois-theoretic results are generalized to such extensions: Artin's theorem on extension degrees, the Galois correspondence and Hilbert's Theorem 90.

Abstract:Given a sequence of related modules $M_n$ defined over a sequence of related polynomial rings, one may ask how to simultaneously compute a finite Gröbner basis for each $M_n$. Furthermore, one may ask how to simultaneously compute the module of syzygies of each $M_n$. In this paper we address both questions. Working in the setting of OI-modules over a Noetherian polynomial OI-algebra, we provide OI-analogues of Buchberger's Criterion, Buchberger's Algorithm for computing Gröbner bases, and Schreyer's Theorem for computing syzygies. We also establish a stabilization result for Gröbner bases.

Abstract:For the almost complete intersection ideals $(x_1^2, \dots, x_n^2, (x_1 + \cdots + x_n)^k)$, we compute their reduced Gröbner basis for any term ordering, revealing a combinatorial structure linked to lattice paths, elementary symmetric polynomials, and Catalan numbers. Using this structure, we classify the weak Lefschetz property for these ideals. Additionally, we provide a new proof of the well-known result that the squarefree algebra satisfies the strong Lefschetz property. Finally, we compute the Betti numbers of the initial ideals and construct a minimal free resolution using a Mayer-Vietoris tree approach.

On the arithmetic complexity of computing Gröbner bases of comaximal determinantal ideals

Abstract:Let $M$ be an $n\times n$ matrix of homogeneous linear forms over a field $\Bbbk$. If the ideal $\mathcal{I}_{n-2}(M)$ generated by minors of size $n-1$ is Cohen-Macaulay, then the Gulliksen-Negård complex is a free resolution of $\mathcal{I}_{n-2}(M)$. It has recently been shown that by taking into account the syzygy modules for $\mathcal{I}_{n-2}(M)$ which can be obtained from this complex, one can derive a refined signature-based Gröbner basis algorithm DetGB which avoids reductions to zero when computing a grevlex Gröbner basis for $\mathcal{I}_{n-2}(M)$. In this paper, we establish sharp complexity bounds on DetGB. To accomplish this, we prove several results on the sizes of reduced grevlex Gröbner bases of reverse lexicographic ideals, thanks to which we obtain two main complexity results which rely on conjectures similar to that of Fröberg. The first one states that, in the zero-dimensional case, the size of the reduced grevlex Gröbner basis of $\mathcal{I}_{n-2}(M)$ is bounded from below by $n^{6}$ asymptotically. The second, also in the zero-dimensional case, states that the complexity of DetGB is bounded from above by $n^{2\omega+3}$ asymptotically, where $2\le\omega\le 3$ is any complexity exponent for matrix multiplication over $\Bbbk$.

Re-embeddings of Affine Algebras Via Gröbner Fans of Linear Ideals

Abstract:Given an affine algebra $R=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]/I$ over a field $K$, where $I$ is an ideal in the polynomial ring $P=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$, we examine the task of effectively calculating re-embeddings of $I$, i.e., of presentations $R=P'/I'$ such that $P'=K[y_1,\dots,y_m]$ has fewer indeterminates. For cases when the number of indeterminates $n$ is large and Gröbner basis computations are infeasible, we have previously introduced the method of $Z$-separating re-embeddings. This method tries to detect polynomials of a special shape in $I$ which allow us to eliminate the indeterminates in the tuple $Z$ by a simple substitution process. Here we improve this approach by showing that suitable candidate tuples $Z$ can be found using the Gröbner fan of the linear part of $I$. Then we describe a method to compute the Gröbner fan of a linear ideal, and we improve this computation in the case of binomial linear ideals using a cotangent equivalence relation. Finally, we apply the improved technique in the case of the defining ideals of border basis schemes.

Abstract:In this article we present two new algorithms to compute the Groebner basis of an ideal that is invariant under certain permutations of the ring variables and which are both implemented in SINGULAR (cf. [DGPS12]). The first and major algorithm is most performant over finite fields whereas the second algorithm is a probabilistic modification of the modular computation of Groebner bases based on the articles by Arnold (cf. [A03]), Idrees, Pfister, Steidel (cf. [IPS11]) and Noro, Yokoyama (cf. [NY12], [Y12]). In fact, the first algorithm that mainly uses the given symmetry, improves the necessary modular calculations in positive characteristic in the second algorithm. Particularly, we could, for the first time even though probabilistic, compute the Groebner basis of the famous ideal of cyclic 9-roots (cf. [BF91]) over the rationals with SINGULAR.

Abstract:Let $K\langle X\rangle =K\langle X_1,...,X_n\rangle$ be the free algebra of $n$ generators over a field $K$, and let $R\langle X\rangle =R\langle X_1,...,X_n\rangle$ be the free algebra of $n$ generators over an arbitrary commutative ring $R$. In this semi-expository paper, it is clarified that any monic Gröbner basis in $K\langle X\rangle$ may give rise to a monic Gröbner basis of the same type in $R\langle X\rangle$, and vice versa. This fact turns out that many important $R$-algebras have defining relations which form a monic Gröbner basis, and consequently, such $R$-algebras may be studied via a nice PBW structure theory as that developed for quotient algebras of $K\langle X\rangle$ in ([LWZ], [Li2, 3]).

Abstract:In this paper we describe an efficient involutive algorithm for constructing Groebner bases of polynomial ideals. The algorithm is based on the concept of involutive monomial division which restricts the conventional division in a certain way. In the presented algorithm a reduced Groebner basis is the internally fixed subset of an involutive basis, and having computed the later, the former can be output without any extra computational costs. We also discuss some accounts of experimental superiority of the involutive algorithm over Buchberger's algorithm.

Abstract:In 1965 Buchberger defined Gröbner bases and an algorithm to compute them. Despite a slow start, already in the eighties Gröbner bases had become the main device for symbolic computations involving polynomials as well as a theoretical tool for the investigation of ideals and varieties via the so-called Gröbner deformation techniques. Rings and algebraic varieties defined by means of determinants are among the most classical objects in commutative algebra, algebraic geometry and invariant theory. By the end of the the eighties the time was ripe for the computation of Gröbner bases of determinantal ideals. We will tell the tale of how (universal) Gröbner bases of determinantal ideals were identified and the key role played by Bernd Sturmfels and his collaborators in this enterprise.

Solving Systems of Algebraic Equations Over Finite Commutative Rings and Applications

Abstract:Several problems in algebraic geometry and coding theory over finite rings are modeled by systems of algebraic equations. Among these problems, we have the rank decoding problem, which is used in the construction of public-key cryptography. In 2004, Nechaev and Mikhailov proposed two methods for solving systems of polynomial equations over finite chain rings. These methods used solutions over the residual field to construct all solutions step by step. However, for some types of algebraic equations, one simply needs partial solutions. In this paper, we combine two existing approaches to show how Gröbner bases over finite chain rings can be used to solve systems of algebraic equations over finite commutative rings. Then, we use skew polynomials and Plücker coordinates to show that some algebraic approaches used to solve the rank decoding problem and the MinRank problem over finite fields can be extended to finite principal ideal rings.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a method for computing noncommutative Gröbner bases over a noetherian valuation ring. We have generalized the fundamental theorem on normal forms over an arbitrary ring. The classical method of dynamical commutative Gröbner bases is generalized to Buchberger's algorithm over R = 𝒱 ⟨ x 1,…, x m ⟩, a free associative algebra with noncommuting variables, where 𝒱 = ℤ/nℤ and 𝒱 = ℤ. The proposed process generalizes previous known techniques for the computation of commutative Gröbner bases over a nætherian valuation ring and/or noncommutative Gröbner bases over a field.

Abstract:We consider a theory of noncommutative Gröbner bases on decreasingly filtered algebras whose associated graded algebras are commutative. We transfer many algorithms that use commutative Gröbner bases to this context. As an important application, we implement very efficient algorithms to compute the Ext groups over the Steenrod algebra $\mathscr{A}$ at the prime $2$. Especially, the cohomology of the Steenrod algebra $Ext_{\mathscr{A}}^{*, *}(\mathbb{F}_2, \mathbb{F}_2)$, which plays an important role in algebraic topology, is calculated up to total degree of 261, including the ring structure in this range.

Abstract:Signature-based algorithms have become a standard approach for computing Gröbner bases in commutative polynomial rings. However, so far, it was not clear how to extend this concept to the setting of noncommutative polynomials in the free algebra. In this paper, we present a signature-based algorithm for computing Gröbner bases in precisely this setting. The algorithm is an adaptation of Buchberger's algorithm including signatures. We prove that our algorithm correctly enumerates a signature Gröbner basis as well as a Gröbner basis of the module generated by the leading terms of the generators' syzygies, and that it terminates whenever the ideal admits a finite signature Gröbner basis. Additionally, we adapt well-known signature-based criteria eliminating redundant reductions, such as the syzygy criterion, the F5 criterion and the singular criterion, to the case of noncommutative polynomials. We also generalise reconstruction methods from the commutative setting that allow to recover, from partial information about signatures, the coordinates of elements of a Gröbner basis in terms of the input polynomials, as well as a basis of the syzygy module of the generators. We have written a toy implementation of all the algorithms in the Mathematica package OperatorGB and we compare our signature-based algorithm to the classical Buchberger algorithm for noncommutative polynomials.

Abstract:In the field of algebraic systems biology, the number of minimal polynomial models constructed using discretized data from an underlying system is related to the number of distinct reduced Gröbner bases for the ideal of the data points. While the theory of Gröbner bases is extensive, what is missing is a closed form for their number for a given ideal. This work contributes connections between the geometry of data points and the number of Gröbner bases associated to small data sets. Furthermore we improve an existing upper bound for the number of Gröbner bases specialized for data over a finite field.

Reading Rational Univariate Representations on lexicographic Groebner bases

Abstract:In this contribution, we consider a zero-dimensional polynomial system in $n$ variables defined over a field $\mathbb{K}$. In the context of computing a Rational Univariate Representation (RUR) of its solutions, we address the problem of certifying a separating linear form and, once certified, calculating the RUR that comes from it, without any condition on the ideal else than being zero-dimensional. Our key result is that the RUR can be read (closed formula) from lexicographic Groebner bases of bivariate elimination ideals, even in the case where the original ideal that is not in shape position, so that one can use the same core as the well known FGLM method to propose a simple algorithm. Our first experiments, either with a very short code (300 lines) written in Maple or with a Julia code using straightforward implementations performing only classical Gaussian reductions in addition to Groebner bases for the degree reverse lexicographic ordering, show that this new method is already competitive with sophisticated state of the art implementations which do not certify the parameterizations.
