Abstract:Digital transformation (DX) has recently become a pressing issue for many companies as the latest digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, can be easily utilized. However, devising new business models is not easy for compa-nies, though they can improve their operations through digital technologies. Thus, business model design support methods are needed by people who lack digital tech-nology expertise. In contrast, large language models (LLMs) represented by ChatGPT and natural language processing utilizing LLMs have been developed revolutionarily. A business model design support system that utilizes these technologies has great potential. However, research on this area is scant. Accordingly, this study proposes an LLM-based method for comparing and analyzing similar companies from different business do-mains as a first step toward business model design support utilizing LLMs. This method can support idea generation in digital business model design.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem discussed in this paper is how to utilize large-scale language models (LLMs) to support the design of digital business models. As digital transformation (DX) becomes increasingly important, enterprises need to innovate their business models to stay competitive, but designing new models is not easy. Despite significant progress in natural language processing with LLMs like ChatGPT, research on utilizing these technologies for business model analysis and design is still scarce. The paper proposes an LLM-based approach for comparing and analyzing similar companies in different business domains to provide creative support for designing digital business models. The study primarily utilizes DX (digital transformation) case reports released by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, and identifies similarities between business models through text preprocessing, vectorization, and cosine similarity calculation. This method can help designers conceptualize new digital business models by referencing similar existing models. The paper presents two analysis examples that demonstrate how comparing case studies of pharmaceutical companies, beverage manufacturers, chemical manufacturers, air conditioner manufacturers, and trading companies reveals commonalities in their DX strategies, such as AI applications, communication platform establishment, and system modernization, for other companies to learn from. Overall, this research aims to fill the gap in LLMs' support for business model design and lays the foundation for future development of recommendation systems or chatbots to assist companies in accelerating the DX process.
