Abstract:The evolution of 1-vortices when their massive bound mode is excited is investigated in detail (both analytically and numerically) in the Abelian-Higgs model for different ranges of the self-coupling constant. The dependence of the spectrum of the 1-vortex fluctuation operator on the model parameter is discussed initially. A perturbative approach is employed to study the radiation emission in both the scalar and the vector channels. Our findings reveal that the oscillating initial configuration of the 1-vortex radiates at a frequency twice that of the internal mode. Through energy conservation considerations, we derive the decay law of the massive mode. Finally, these analytical results are compared with numerical simulations in field theory.

Scattering of Vortices with Excited Normal Modes

Abstract:We consider head-on collisions at critical coupling of vortices modelled by the Abelian-Higgs model. We investigate the 2-vortex scattering, whereby the vortices are excited by the shape mode causing fluctuations in the gauge-invariant quantities. When the vortices are excited with a sufficiently large amplitude the moduli space approximation fails, and we observe an interesting behaviour in which the vortices can become trapped in a quasi-bound state with multiple bounces. We perform a detailed investigation on the behaviour of these excited vortices and sample a phase space of solutions. Interestingly, we find a fractal structure dependent on the initial phase of the mode and velocity of the vortices.

Abstract:We show that spectral walls are common phenomena in the dynamics of kinks in (1+1) dimensions. They occur in models based on two or more scalar fields with a nonempty Bogomol'nyi-Prasam-Sommerfield (BPS) sector, hosting two zero modes, where they are one of the main factors governing the soliton dynamics. We also show that spectral walls appear as singularities of the dynamical vibrational moduli space.

Abstract:The presence of gauge symmetry in 1+1D is known to be redundant, since it does not imply the existence of dynamical gauge bosons. As a consequence, in the continuum, the Abelian-Higgs model, the theory of bosonic matter interacting with photons, just possesses a single phase, as the higher dimensional Higgs and Coulomb phases are connected via non-perturbative effects. However, recent research published in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 090601 (2022)] has revealed an unexpected phase transition when the system is discretized on the lattice. This transition is described by a conformal field theory with a central charge of $c=3/2$. In this paper, we aim to characterize the two components of this $c=3/2$ theory -- namely the free Majorana fermionic and bosonic parts -- through equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium spectral analyses.

Abstract:The scattering is studied using moduli space metric for well-separated vortices of non-Abelian vortices in (2+1)-dimensional U(N) gauge theories with N Higgs fields in the fundamental representation. Unlike vortices in the Abelian-Higgs model, dynamics of non-Abelian vortices has a lot of new features; The kinetic energy in real space can be transfered to that of internal orientational moduli and vice versa, the energy and charge transfer between two vortices, the scattering angle of collisions with a fixed impact parameter depends on the internal orientations, and some resonances appear due to synchronization of the orientations. Scattering of dyonic non-Abelian vortices in a mass deformed theory is also studied. We find a bound state of two vortices moving along coils around a circle, like a loop of a phone code.

Higgs Phases and Boundary Criticality

Abstract:Motivated by recent work connecting Higgs phases to symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases, we investigate the interplay of gauge redundancy and global symmetry in lattice gauge theories with Higgs fields in the presence of a boundary. The core conceptual point is that a global symmetry associated to a Higgs field, which is pure-gauge in a closed system, acts physically at the boundary under boundary conditions which allow electric flux to escape the system. We demonstrate in both Abelian and non-Abelian models that this symmetry is spontaneously broken in the Higgs regime, implying the presence of gapless edge modes. Starting with the U(1) Abelian Higgs model in 4D, we demonstrate a boundary phase transition in the 3D XY universality class separating the bulk Higgs and confining regimes. Varying the boundary coupling while preserving the symmetries shifts the location of the boundary phase transition. We then consider non-Abelian gauge theories with fundamental and group-valued Higgs matter, and identify the analogous non-Abelian global symmetry acting on the boundary generated by the total color charge. For SU($N$) gauge theory with fundamental Higgs matter we argue for a boundary phase transition in the O($2N$) universality class, verified numerically for $N=2,3$. For group-valued Higgs matter, the boundary theory is a principal chiral model exhibiting chiral symmetry breaking. We further demonstrate this mechanism in theories with higher-form Higgs fields. We show how the higher-form matter symmetry acts at the boundary and can spontaneously break, exhibiting a boundary confinement-deconfinement transition. We also study the electric-magnetic dual theory, demonstrating a dual magnetic defect condensation transition at the boundary. We discuss some implications and extensions of these findings and what they may imply for the relation between Higgs and SPT phases.

Charge-breaking domain walls separating neutral vacua in multi-Higgs models

Abstract:The scalar potential of a multi-Higgs model can possess a rich structure of minima and saddle points, which evolves in an intricate way as the parameters change. In the hot early Universe, it could trigger multi-step phase transitions, with exotic intermediate phases and peculiar domain wall configurations. Here, we provide a glimpse into this richness with the example of the three-Higgs-doublet model with the symmetry group $\Sigma(36)$, either exact or softly broken. We present its phase diagram tracking not only the global minimum but all of its extrema. In particular, we reveal parameter space regions in which the deepest saddle point is charge breaking. This naturally leads to phase transitions between neutral vacua which involve expanding and colliding charge-breaking bubble walls. We also comment on opportunities of multi-step phase transitions, on charge-breaking intermediate phases, and on phase transitions between different charge-breaking vacua. We illustrate the general discussion with two benchmark models, one of which possesses competing saddle points and allows for emergence of bubbles of the same true vacuum but with bubble walls of different nature. The intriguing cosmological implications of all these possibilities deserve dedicated study.

Spatial inversion symmetry breaking of vortex current in biased-ladder superfluid

Abstract:We investigate the quench dynamics of interacting bosons on a two-leg ladder in presence of a uniform Abelian gauge field. The model hosts a variety of emergent quantum phases, and we focus on the superfluid biased-ladder phase breaking the $Z_{2}$ symmetry of two legs. We observe an asymmetric spreading of vortex current and particle density, i.e., the current behaves particle-like on the right and wave-like on the left, indicating spontaneous breaking of the spatial inversion symmetry. By decreasing the repulsion strength, it is found the particle-like current is more robust than the wave-like one. The evolution of entanglement entropy manifests logarithmic growth with time suggesting many-body localization matters.

Holographic Global Vortices with Novel Boundary Conditions

Abstract:The AdS/CFT correspondence has significantly impacted the study of strongly coupled systems, providing insights into various condensed matter phenomena through its holographic duality. This paper introduces an alternative approach to the breaking of the global $U(1)$ symmetry in the bulk in two asymptotically AdS spacetimes: AdS plus hard wall and AdS Blackbrane. We explore a $(3+1)$-dimensional bulk $U(1)$ symmetry-breaking phase vacuum within a global $U(1)$ $\phi^4$ field theory, without the gauge field present in prior models. We find the symmetry-breaking vacuum requires that the mass squared is proportional to the quartic coupling. We also investigate numerical solutions of topologically stable vortex strings extending into the bulk. We find evidence that the full UV expansion is dual to a point-like boundary excitation.

Non-Abelian Domain Walls and Gravitational Waves

Abstract:We investigate the properties of domain walls arising from non-Abelian discrete symmetries, which we refer to as non-Abelian domain walls. We focus on $S_4$, one of the most commonly used groups in lepton flavour mixing models. The spontaneous breaking of $S_4$ leads to distinct vacua preserving a residual $Z_2$ or $Z_3$ symmetry. Five types of domain walls are found, labelled as SI, SII, TI, TII, and TIII, respectively, the former two separating $Z_2$ vacua and the latter three separating $Z_3$ vacua. We highlight that SI, TI and TIII may be unstable for some regions of the parameter space and decay to stable domain walls. Stable domain walls can collapse and release gravitational radiation for a suitable size of explicit symmetry breaking. A symmetry-breaking scale of order 100 TeV may explain the recent discovery of nanohertz gravitational waves by PTA experiments. For the first time, we investigate the properties of these domain walls, which we obtain numerically with semi-analytical formulas applied to compute the tension and thickness across a wide range of parameter space. We estimate the resulting gravitational wave spectrum and find that, thanks to their rich vacuum structure, non-Abelian domain walls manifest in a very interesting and complex phenomenology.

Abstract:We study a spontaneously broken SU(2) Chern-Simons-Higgs model coupled though a Higgs portal to an uncharged triplet scalar with a vacuum state competing with the Higgs one. We find vortex-like solutions to the field equations in different parameter space regions. Depending on the scalar coupling constants we find a parameter region in which the competing order creates a halo about the Chern-Simons-Higgs vortex core, together with two other regions, one where no vortex solutions exist, the other where ordinary Chern-Simons-Higgs vortices can be found. We derive the low-energy theory for the moduli fields on the vortex world sheet and also discuss the connection of our results with those found in studies of competing orders in high temperature superconductors.

Abstract:BPS states in supersymmetric theories can admit additional algebro-geometric structures in their spectra, described as quiver Yangian algebras. Equivariant fixed points on the quiver variety are interpreted as vectors populating a representation module, and matrix elements for the generators are then defined as Duistermaat-Heckman integrals in the vicinity of these points. The well-known wall-crossing phenomena are that the fixed point spectrum establishes a dependence on the stability (Fayet-Illiopolous) parameters ζ , jumping abruptly across the walls of marginal stability, which divide the ζ -space into a collection of stability chambers — "phases" of the theory. The standard construction of the quiver Yangian algebra relies heavily on the molten crystal model, valid in a sole cyclic chamber where all the ζ -parameters have the same sign. We propose to lift this restriction and investigate the effects of the wall-crossing phenomena on the quiver Yangian algebra and its representations — starting with the example of affine super-Yangian . In addition to the molten crystal construction more general atomic structures appear, in other non-cyclic phases (chambers of the ζ -space). We call them glasses and also divide in a few different classes. For some of the new phases we manage to associate an algebraic structure again as a representation of the same affine Yangian . This observation supports an earlier conjecture that the BPS algebraic structures can be considered as new wall-crossing invariants.

We explain how both are related via conformal mapping problems involving prescribed linear combinations of the curvature and volume form, and show how the discrete conformal theory can be used to construct discrete vortex solutions.

Simulations of Domain Walls in Two Higgs Doublet Models

Abstract:The Two Higgs Doublet Model predicts the emergence of 3 distinct domain wall solutions arising from the breaking of 3 accidental global symmetries, $Z_2$, CP1 and CP2, at the electroweak scale for specific choices of the model parameters. We present numerical kink solutions to the field equations in all three cases along with dynamical simulations of the models in (2+1) and (3+1) dimensions. For each kink solution we define an associated topological current. In all three cases simulations produce a network of domain walls which deviates from power law scaling in Minkowski and FRW simulations. This deviation is attributed to a winding of the electroweak group parameters around the domain walls in our simulations. We observe a local violation of the neutral vacuum condition on the domain walls in our simulations. This violation is attributed to relative electroweak transformations across the domain walls which is a general feature emerging from random initial conditions.

Electroweak Symmetry Restoration in Extended Higgs Sectors via Domain Walls

Abstract:Domain walls are a type of topological defects that can arise in the early universe after the spontaneous breaking of a discrete symmetry. This occurs in several beyond Standard Model theories with an extended Higgs sector such as the Next-to-Two-Higgs-Doublet model (N2HDM). In this talk, I will discuss the domain wall solution related to the singlet scalar of the N2HDM and demonstrate the possibility of electroweak symmetry restoration (EWSR) in the vicinity of the domain wall. Such symmetry restoration can have profound implications on the early universe cosmology as the sphaleron rate inside the domain wall would, in principle, be unsuppressed compared with the rate outside the wall.

Vortices and strings induced from a generalized Abelian Higgs model

Abstract:In this note we construct self--dual vortices and cosmic strings from the generalized Abelian Higgs theory. A special model of the theory is of focused interest in which the Higgs potential is a polynomial depending on $m$. When $|m|>0$, we obtain sharp existence theorems for vortices and strings correspond to gravity absence and appearance, respectively over the full plane. In particular, the vortex solution is unique if $m<0$. In order to over the difficulties posed by gravity, we introduce the regularization method when there are at least two distinct points among the set of centers of strings. When all these points coincide, the fixed point theorem works well. A series properties regarding vortices and strings for $|m|>0$ are also established.

Domain Wall Solution Arising in Abelian Higgs Model Subject to Born-Infeld Theory of Electrodynamics

Abstract:In this note we research the Abelian Higgs model subject to the Born-Infeld theory of electrodynamics for which the BPS equations can be reduced into a quasi-linear differential equation. We show that the equation exists a unique solution under two interesting boundary conditions which realize the corresponding phase transition. We construct the solution through a dynamical shooting method for which the correct shooting slope is unique. We also obtain the sharp asymptotic estimate for the solution at infinity.
