Abstract:Observations of accreting neutron stars are widely used to constrain the microphysical properties of superdense matter. A key ingredient in this analysis is the heating associated with nuclear reactions in the outer layers of the neutron star (crust), as well as the equation of state and composition of these layers. As recently shown, the neutron hydrostatic/diffusion (nHD) condition is valid in the inner part of the crust, where some of the neutrons are not bound to the nuclei, and this condition should be properly incorporated into crustal models. Here we construct models of the accreted crust of a neutron star, taking into account the nHD condition and proton shell effects in nuclei. For numerical illustration, we employ the recently proposed compressible liquid drop model, which incorporates shell effects. However, our approach is general and can also be used in future studies relying on more sophisticated nuclear physics models.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the thermodynamic consistency and compositional changes in the inner shell during the accretion process of neutron stars, especially considering the proton - shell effect and the influence of unbound neutrons. Specifically, the author aims to construct a model of the accreted neutron - star shell that can simultaneously take into account the proton - shell effect in nuclear reactions and the existence of unbound neutrons in the inner shell, thereby more accurately describing the properties and evolution processes of the neutron - star shell. This includes determining the equation of state (EOS) of the shell and the heat - release profile, which are crucial for understanding the thermal evolution and internal structure of neutron stars. ### Main objectives of the paper: 1. **Construct a model of the accreted neutron - star shell**: By introducing the Compressible Liquid Drop Model (CLD) and the proton - shell effect, the paper constructs a model of the accreted neutron - star shell. These models consider not only the nuclear reactions within the shell but also the diffusion equilibrium of unbound neutrons (nHD condition). 2. **Analyze thermodynamic consistency**: The paper explores how to maintain thermodynamic consistency in the model, especially the continuity at the junction between the shell and the core. This involves ensuring the continuity of the neutron chemical potential between the shell and the core. 3. **Determine key parameters**: Through numerical simulation, the paper determines the pressure \(P_{\text{oi}}\) at the outer - inner shell interface, which is a key parameter for constructing the shell model. By analyzing models at different pressures, the author determines a reasonable range for \(P_{\text{oi}}\). 4. **Study nuclear instability**: The paper analyzes the influence of nuclear instability on the shell structure. This instability can lead to the disintegration of nuclei, thereby affecting the composition and thermal evolution of the shell. ### Main methods: - **Compressible Liquid Drop Model (CLD)**: Used to describe the properties of nuclear matter, including surface energy and volume energy. - **Proton - shell effect**: By adding pre - calculated shell energies, more precisely describes the energy - level structure of nuclei. - **nHD condition**: Considers the diffusion equilibrium of unbound neutrons to ensure the thermodynamic consistency of the model. - **Numerical simulation**: Solves the model equations by numerical methods to determine the equation of state and heat - release profile of the shell. ### Key formulas: - **nHD condition**: \[ \mu_n^\infty=\text{constant} \] where \(\mu_n^\infty = \mu_n e^{\nu/2}\) is the redshifted neutron chemical potential, \(\mu_n\) is the local neutron chemical potential, and \(e^{\nu/2}\) is the redshift factor. - **Pressure formula**: \[ P = -\frac{\partial (\epsilon V)}{\partial V}=-\epsilon+\mu_n n_b+\mu_N n_N \] - **Change in neutron chemical potential**: \[ \mu_n = m_n c^2\exp\left(\int_{P_{\text{oi}}}^P\frac{dP}{\epsilon(P)+P}\right) \] - **Thermodynamic potential \(\Psi\)**: \[ \Psi = (\epsilon + P)V-\mu_n N_b \] Through these methods and formulas, the paper successfully constructs a more accurate model of the accreted neutron - star shell, providing an important theoretical basis for understanding the internal structure and thermal evolution of neutron stars.
