Abstract:Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), which achieves both wireless energy transfer (WET) and information transfer, is an attractive technique for future Internet of Everything (IoE) in the sixth-generation (6G) mobile communications. With SWIPT, battery-less IoE devices can be powered while communicating with other devices. Line-of-sight (LOS) RF transmission and near-field inductive coupling based transmission are typical SWIPT scenarios, which are both LOS channels and without enough degree of freedom for high spectrum efficiency as well as high energy efficiency. Due to the orthogonal wavefronts, orbital angular momentum (OAM) can facilitate the SWIPT in LOS channels. In this article, we introduce the OAM-based SWIPT as well as discuss some basic advantages and challenges for it. After introducing the OAM-based SWIPT for IoE, we first propose an OAM-based SWIPT system model with the OAM-modes assisted dynamic power splitting (DPS). Then, four basic advantages regarding the OAM-based SWIPT are reviewed with some numerical analyses for further demonstrating the advantages. Next, four challenges regarding integrating OAM into SWIPT and possible solutions are discussed. OAM technology provides multiple orthogonal streams to increase both spectrum and energy efficiencies for SWIPT, thus creating many opportunities for future WET and SWIPT researches.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to explore the application of Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) technology in the sixth-generation mobile communication (6G) systems for Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT), and discusses its advantages and challenges. ### Research Background As the fifth-generation mobile communication (5G) networks are gradually being deployed, researching sixth-generation mobile communication technology has become urgent. An important research direction of 6G is the Internet of Everything (IoE), which emphasizes intelligent connections between people, processes, data, and things. IoE requires connecting billions of passive devices, and how to provide energy for these devices has become a major challenge. Using radio frequency (RF) signals for Wireless Energy Transfer (WET) can achieve simultaneous information and energy transfer (SWIPT), thereby significantly improving the spectral efficiency and energy efficiency of information networks. ### Main Issues 1. **Low Degree of Freedom Issue**: In Line-of-Sight (LOS) scenarios, traditional multi-antenna technology is difficult to achieve high capacity gain at high frequency bandwidths. OAM technology, due to its orthogonal wavefront characteristics, can increase spectral efficiency in LOS channels, thereby improving energy efficiency. 2. **Contradiction between Information Decoding and Energy Harvesting at the Receiver**: SWIPT receivers cannot simultaneously decode information and harvest energy from the same received signal, thus requiring the allocation of received energy. ### Solutions - A SWIPT system model based on OAM mode-assisted Dynamic Power Splitting (DPS) is proposed, which can dynamically allocate the energy of each OAM mode signal for Information Decoding (ID) and Energy Harvesting (EH). - The application of OAM technology in different scenarios is discussed, including LOS RF transmission, near-field inductive coupling transmission, and optical transmission. ### Advantages 1. **High Spectral Efficiency**: Different OAM modes are orthogonal to each other, creating multiple parallel sub-channels without consuming additional power or bandwidth. 2. **Support for More Users**: OAM modes can be used for multi-user SWIPT, supporting more users through Mode Division Multiple Access (MDMA). 3. **Flexible Energy Allocation**: Combined with the DPS scheme, OAM technology can achieve more flexible energy allocation. 4. **Wide Range of Applications**: OAM technology can be used in various scenarios, including near-field inductive coupling, far-field directional energy beamforming, and far-field ambient RF energy harvesting. ### Challenges - The energy efficiency of high-order OAM modes is relatively low. - Strict alignment requirements for transceivers. - Application in Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) scenarios. - Multi-user OAM mode selection issues. In summary, this paper mainly introduces the application of OAM technology in SWIPT, discusses its advantages and challenges, and provides new ideas for future 6G wireless energy transfer research.
