Abstract:We prove that for any Riemannian metric $g$ on a closed orientable surface $\Sigma$ and any spacelike embedding $f:\Sigma \rightarrow M$ in a pseudo-Riemannian manifold $(M,h)$, the embedding $f$ can be $C^{0}$-approximated by a smooth conformal embedding for $g$. If in addition, $M$ is a quotient of the $(2+1)$-dimensional solid timelike cone by a cocompact lattice of $SO^{\circ}(2,1)$, we show that the set of negatively curved metrics on $\Sigma$ that admit isometric embeddings in $M$ projects into a relatively compact set in the Teichmüller space.

Holomorphic Legendrian curves in convex domains

Abstract:We prove several results on approximation and interpolation of holomorphic Legendrian curves in convex domains in $\mathbb{C}^{2n+1}$, $n \geq 2$, with the standard contact structure. Namely, we show that such a curve, defined on a compact bordered Riemann surface $M$, whose image lies in the interior of a convex domain $\mathscr{D} \subset \mathbb{C}^{2n+1}$, may be approximated uniformly on compacts in the interior $\mathrm{Int} \, M$ by holomorphic Legendrian curves $\mathrm{Int} \, M \to \mathscr{D}$ such that the approximants are proper, complete, agree with the starting curve on a given finite set in $\mathrm{Int} \, M$ to a given finite order, and hit a specified diverging discrete set in the convex domain. We first show approximation of this kind on bounded strongly convex domains and then generalise it to arbitrary convex domains. As a consequence we show that any bordered Riemann surface properly embeds into a convex domain as a complete holomorphic Legendrian curve under a suitable geometric condition on the boundary of the codomain.

Abstract:We classify Legendrian unknots in overtwisted contact structures on $S^3$. In particular, we show that up to contact isotopy for every pair $(n,\pm(n-1))$ with $n>0$ there are exactly two oriented non-loose Legendrian unknots in $S^3$ with Thurston-Bennequin invariant $n$ and rotation number $\pm(n-1)$. (Only one overtwisted contact structure on $S^3$ admits a non-loose unknot $K$ and the classical invariants have to be $\mathrm{tb}(K)=n$ and $\mathrm{rot}(K)=\pm(n-1)$ for $n>1$.) This can be used to prove two results attributed to Y.~Che\-kan\-ov: The first implies that the contact mapping class group of an overtwisted contact structure on $S^3$ depends on the contact structure. The second result is that the identity component of the contactomorphism group of an overtwisted contact structure on $S^3$ does not always act transitively on the set of boundaries of overtwisted discs.

Abstract:Our main result is the $\mathcal{C}^0$-rigidity of the area spectrum and the Maslov class of Lagrangian submanifolds. This relies on the existence of punctured pseudoholomorphic discs in cotangent bundles with boundary on the zero section, whose boundaries represent any integral homology class. We discuss further applications of these punctured discs in symplectic geometry.

Abstract:In any 5 dimensional closed Sasakian manifold we prove that any minmax operation on the area among Legendrian surfaces is achieved by a continuous conformal Legendrian map from a closed riemann surface $S$ into $N^5$ equipped with an integer multiplicity bounded in $L^\infty$. Moreover this map, equipped with this multiplicity, satisfies a weak version of the Hamiltonian Minimal Equation. We conjecture that any solution to this equation is a smooth branched Legendrian immersion away from isolated Schoen-Wolfson conical singularities with non zero Maslov class.

Symmetries of $(2,3,5)$-distributions and associated Legendrian cone structures

Abstract:We exploit a natural correspondence between holomorphic $(2,3,5)$-distributions and nondegenerate lines on holomorphic contact manifolds of dimension $5$ to present a new perspective in the study of symmetries of $(2,3,5)$-distributions. This leads to a number of new results in this classical subject, including an unexpected relation between the multiply-transitive families of models having $7$- and $6$-dimensional symmetries, and a one-to-one correspondence between equivalence classes of nontransitive $(2,3,5)$-distributions with $6$-dimensional symmetries and nonhomogeneous nondegenerate Legendrian curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$. An ingredient for establishing the former is an explicit classification of homogeneous nondegenerate Legendrian curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$, which we present.

Abstract:In this article, we give an explicit computation of the order spectral selectors of a pair of $C^1$-close Legendrian submanifolds belonging to an orderable isotopy class. The $C^1$-local flatness of the spectral distance and the characterisation of its geodesics are deduced. Another consequence is the $C^1$-local coincidence of spectral and Shelukhin-Chekanov-Hofer distances. Similar statements are then deduced for several contactomorphism groups.

Abstract:We consider the embedding function $c_b(a)$ describing the problem of symplectically embedding an ellipsoid $E(1,a)$ into the smallest possible scaling by $\lambda>1$ of the polydisc $P(1,b)$. In particular, we calculate rigid-flexible values, i.e. the minimum $a$ such that for $E(1,a')$ with $a'>a$, the embedding problem is determined only by volume. For $1<b<2$ we find that these values vary piecewise smoothly outside the discrete set $b\in\left(\frac{n+1}{n}\right)^2$.

Rigidity and nonexistence of CMC hypersurfaces in 5-manifolds

Abstract:We prove that the nonnegative $3$-intermediate Ricci curvature and uniformly positive $k$-triRic curvature implies rigidity of complete noncompact two-sided stable minimal hypersurfaces in a Riemannian manifold $(X^5,g)$ with bounded geometry. The nonnegativity of $3$-intermediate Ricci curvature can be replaced by nonnegative Ricci and biRic curvature. In particular, there is no complete noncompact finite index CMC hypersurface in a closed $5$-dimensional manifold with positive sectional curvature. It extends result of Chodosh-Li-Stryker [to appear in J. Eur. Math. Soc (2024)] to $5$-dimensions. We also prove that complete constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^5$ with finite index and the mean curvature greater than $\frac{\sqrt{65}}{8}$ must be compact. This improves the previous larger bound $\frac{\sqrt{175}}{\sqrt{148}}$ on the mean curvature.

Aspherical Lagrangian submanifolds, Audin's conjecture and cyclic dilations

Abstract:Given a closed, oriented Lagrangian submanifold $L$ in a Liouville domain $\overline{M}$, one can define a Maurer-Cartan element with respect to a certain $L_\infty$-structure on the string homology $\widehat{H}_\ast^{S^1}(\mathcal{L}L;\mathbb{R})$, completed with respect to the action filtration. When the first Gutt-Hutchings capacity of $\overline{M}$ is finite, and $L$ is a $K(\pi,1)$ space, it leads to interesting geometric implications. In particular, we show that $L$ bounds a non-constant pseudoholomorphic disc of Maslov index 2. This confirms a general form of Audin's conjecture and generalizes the works of Fukaya and Irie in the case of $\mathbb{C}^n$ to a wide class of Liouville manifolds. In particular, when $\dim_\mathbb{R}(\overline{M})=6$, every closed, orientable, prime Lagrangian 3-manifold $L\subset\overline{M}$ is diffeomorphic to a spherical space form, or $S^1\times\Sigma_g$, where $\Sigma_g$ is a closed oriented surface.

Fano 3-folds and classification of constantly curved holomorphic $2$-spheres of degree $6$ in the complex Grassmannian $G(2,5)$

Abstract:Up to now the only known constantly curved sextic curve, i.e., holomorphic 2-sphere of degree 6, in the complex $G(2,5)$ has been the first associated curve of the Veronese curve of degree 4, which indicates that such curves are rare to find. Exploring the rich interplay between the ramification of harmonic sequences in differential geometry and algebro-geometric properties of projectively equivalent Fano 3-folds of index 2 and degree 5, we invoke the moduli space structure of sextic curves in the Fano 3-fold often referred to as $V_5$ to confirm the rarity of constancy of curvature, by establishing that the harmonic sequence of a generic sextic curve in $G(2, 5)$ is totally unramified. This paper proposes to investigate from the Galois viewpoint the way ramification can appear in relation to the constancy of curvature among nongeneric sextic curves in $G(2, 5)$. We prove through elaborate $PSL_2$-transvectant and engaged unitary analyses that, up to the ambient unitary equivalence, the moduli space of constantly curved sextic curves in $G(2,5)$ that are $GL(5,{\mathbb C})$-equivalent to those in $V_5$ ramified at the $PSL_2$-invariant 1-dimensional singular locus somewhere, is semialgebraic of dimension 2 all members of which barring the above Veronese curve are nonhomogeneous. Many explicit examples can be constructed.

Abstract:We give an elementary topological obstruction for a manifold M of dimension 2q+1⩾7 to admit a contact open book with flexible Weinstein pages and c1(π2(M))=0 : if the torsion subgroup of the q ‐th integral homology group is non‐zero, then no such contact open book exists. We achieve this by proving that a symplectomorphism of a flexible Weinstein manifold acts trivially on integral cohomology. We also produce examples of non‐trivial loops of flexible contact structures using related ideas.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is study rigidity of free boundary minimal two-disks that locally maximize the modified Hawking mass on a Riemannian three-manifold with positive lower bound on its scalar curvature and mean convex boundary. Assuming the strict stability of {\Sigma}, we prove that a neighborhood of it in M is isometric to one of the half de Sitter-Schwarzschild space.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the rigidity problem for compact minimal Legendrian submanifolds in the unit Euclidean spheres via eigenvalues of fundamental matrices, which measure the squared norms of the second fundamental form on all normal directions. By using Lu's inequality on the upper bound of the squared norm of Lie brackets of symmetric matrices, we establish an optimal pinching theorem for such submanifolds of all dimensions, giving a new characterization for the Calabi tori. This pinching condition can also be described by the eigenvalues of the Ricci curvature tensor. Moreover, when the third large eigenvalue of the fundamental matrix vanishes everywhere, we get an optimal rigidity theorem under a weaker pinching condition.

Zero-curvature subconformal structures and dispersionless integrability in dimension five

Abstract:We extend the recent paradigm "Integrability via Geometry" from dimensions 3 and 4 to higher dimensions, relating dispersionless integrability of partial differential equations to curvature constraints of the background geometry. We observe that in higher dimensions on any solution manifold the symbol defines a vector distribution equipped with a subconformal structure, and the integrability imposes a certain compatibility between them. In dimension 5 we express dispersionless integrability via the vanishing of a certain curvature of this subconformal structure. We also obtain a "master equation" governing all second order dispersionless integrable equations in 5D, and count their functional dimension. It turns out that the obtained background geometry is parabolic of the type $(A_3,P_{13})$. We provide its Cartan theoretic description and compute the harmonic curvature components via the Kostant theorem. Then we relate it to 3D projective and 4D conformal geometries via twistor theory, discuss symmetry reductions and nested Lax sequences, as well as give another interpretation of dispersionless integrability in 5D through Levi-degenerate CR structures~in~7D.

The bounded cohomology of transformation groups of Euclidean spaces and discs

Abstract:We prove that the groups of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms and diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}^n$ are boundedly acyclic, in all regularities. This is the first full computation of the bounded cohomology of a transformation group that is not compactly supported, and it implies that many characteristic classes of flat $\mathbb{R}^n$- and $S^n$-bundles are unbounded. We obtain the same result for the group of homeomorphisms of the disc that restrict to the identity on the boundary, and for the homeomorphism group of the non-compact Cantor set. In the appendix, Alexander Kupers proves a controlled version of the annulus theorem which we use to study the bounded cohomology of the homeomorphism group of the discs.

Stability and largeness properties of minimal surfaces in higher codimension

Abstract:We consider stable minimal surfaces of genus 1 in Euclidean space and in Riemannian manifolds. Under the condition of covering stability (all finite covers are stable) we show that a genus 1 finite total curvature minimal surface in $\mathbb R^n$ lies in an even dimensional affine subspace and is holomorphic for some constant orthogonal complex structure. For stable minimal tori in Riemannian manifolds we give an explicit bound on the systole in terms of a positive lower bound on the isotropic curvature. As an application we estimate the systole of noncyclic abelian subgroups of the fundamental group of PIC manifolds. This gives a new proof of the result of [5] that the fundamental cannot contain a noncyclic free abelian subgroup. The proofs apply the structure theory of holomorphic vector bundles over genus 1 Riemann surfaces developed by M. Atiyah [2].

Abstract:We study coisotropic deformations of a compact regular coisotropic submanifold $C$ in a contact manifold $(M,\xi)$. Our main result states that $C$ is rigid among nearby coisotropic submanifolds whose characteristic foliation is diffeomorphic to that of $C$. When combined with a classical rigidity result for foliations, this yields conditions under which $C$ is rigid among all nearby coisotropic submanifolds.
