Abstract:In this work, we investigate [110] symmetric tilt FCC grain boundaries (GBs) by a recently developed approach for quasiperiodic interfaces using the Landau-Brazovskii model. On special tilt angles associated with quadratic algebraic numbers, quasiperiodic GBs exhibit generalized Fibonacci substitution rules. The transition mechanism from quasiperiodic GBs to periodic GBs is explored through sphere offsets and spectral coalescence. We also propose an accurate method to calculate the GB energy for arbitrary tilt angle and analyze the factors affecting the GB energy. The revealing GB energy change is continue along with tilt angle except periodic GBs.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper focuses on the structure and energy of [110] symmetrical tilt grain boundaries (GBs) in face-centered cubic (FCC) crystals, particularly those quasi-periodic GBs associated with secondary algebraic numbers. The authors use the Landau-Brazovskii model and newly developed methods to deal with general tilt GBs. They found that these GBs exhibit a generalized Fibonacci substitution rule at specific tilt angles. The mechanism of transition from quasi-periodic GBs to periodic GBs is studied through sphere displacement and spectral conjugation, and a method to accurately calculate the GB energy at any tilt angle is proposed. The paper also reveals the variation of GB energy with tilt angle. Except for periodic GBs, the GB energy is generally continuous. At angles close to twin boundaries, the repeated arrangement of structural units (such as A, C, D, and E) is observed, and the frequency of repetition of these units increases as the angle approaches the twin angle. In addition, by analyzing the spectral components, the authors point out that the spectra of quasi-periodic GBs appear in pairs when transitioning to twin boundaries and eventually merge into a single spectrum with increased intensity. In conclusion, the paper focuses on understanding and simulating the complex structure of non-CSL GBs in FCC materials and how they transition to periodic GBs through structural and spectral characteristics. This is of great significance for understanding the properties of materials such as plastic deformation and strength.
