Abstract:We introduce and study a geometric heat flow to find Killing vector fields on closed Riemannian manifolds with positive sectional curvature. We study its various properties, prove the global existence of the solution to this flow, discuss its convergence and possible applications, and its relation to the Navier-Stokes equations on manifolds and Kazdan-Warner-Bourguignon-Ezin identity for conformal Killing vector fields. We also provide two new criterions on the existence of Killing vector fields. A similar flow to finding holomorphic vector fields on Kähler manifolds will be studied by Li and Liu (2014).

Abstract:Assuming a-priori a smooth generating vector field, we introduce a generally covariant measure of the flow geometry called the referential gradient of the flow. The main result is the explicit relation between the referential gradient and the generating vector field, and is provided for from two equivalent perspectives: a Lagrangian specification with respect to a generalized parameter, and an Eulerian specification making explicit the evolution dynamics. Furthermore, we provide explicit non-trivial conditions which govern the transformation properties of the referential gradient object.

Abstract:We introduce and study module structures on both the dgla of multiplicative vector fields and the graded algebra of functions on Lie groupoids. We show that there is an associated structure of a graded Lie-Rinehart algebra on the vector fields of a differentiable stack over its smooth functions that is Morita invariant in an appropriate sense. Furthermore, we show that associated Van-Est type maps are compatible with those module structures. We also present several examples.

Abstract:In this note we highlight a common origin for many ubiquitous geometric structures, as well as several new ones by using only the functors of differential calculus in A.M Vinogradov's original sense, adapted to special classes of (graded) commutative algebras. Special attention is given to the particularly simple cases of diole and triole algebras and we show the latter environment is the appropriate one to describe calculus in vector bundles in the presence of a vector-valued fiber metric.

A formal gradient flow interpretation of a class of McKean-Vlasov equations using a new adaptation of the Wasserstein metric

Abstract:A new adaptation of the Wasserstein metric over the space of probability measures is presented, the associated formal Otto calculus developed, and some transport inequalities are proven. An instance of this new metric can be viewed as a curved version of the dual space of a second-order Sobolev-like factor space; in a similar way that the linearization of the classical 2-Wasserstein metric is the dual norm of the first-order, homogeneous Sobolev space. This new metric structure permits an intuitive gradient flow interpretation of a class of nonlinear, nonlocal integro-differential evolution equations of the McKean-Vlasov type that arise at the intersection of mathematics, economics, and physics. Moreover, in the same way that classical $W_2$ gradient flow theory connects heat flow and the second law of thermodynamics by way of Boltzmann entropy, the generalization here gives rise to a principle of econophysics that is much of the same flavor but for the Gini coefficient of economic inequality.

A refined Lusin type theorem for gradients

Abstract:We prove a refined version of the celebrated Lusin type theorem for gradients by Alberti, stating that any Borel vector field $f$ coincides with the gradient of a $C^1$ function $g$, outside a set $E$ of arbitrarily small Lebesgue measure. We replace the Lebesgue measure with any Radon measure $\mu$, and we obtain that the estimate on the $L^p$ norm of $Dg$ does not depend on $\mu(E)$, if the value of $f$ is $\mu$-a.e. orthogonal to the decomposability bundle of $\mu$. We observe that our result implies the 1-dimensional version of the flat chain conjecture by Ambrosio and Kirchheim on the equivalence between metric currents and flat chains with finite mass in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and we state a suitable generalization for $k$-forms, which would imply the validity of the conjecture in full generality.

Abstract:In this work, we show that a family of non-linear mean-field equations on discrete spaces can be viewed as a gradient flow of a natural free energy functional with respect to a certain metric structure we make explicit. We also prove that this gradient flow structure arises as the limit of the gradient flow structures of a natural sequence of N-particle dynamics, as N goes to infinity.

Abstract:In this note, we study a gradient generalized m-quasi-Einstein manifold. That is, there exist two smooth functions f, λ$${\lambda}$$ such thatRij+fij-1mfifj=λgij,$$R_{ij}+f_{ij}-\frac{1}{m}f_if_j=\lambda g_{ij},$$where m is a constant. We first obtain some rigidity results on compact gradient generalized m-quasi-Einstein manifolds. Then, we obtain some classifications for the special gradient generalized m-quasi-Einstein manifolds under the assumption that the Bach tensor is flat. In particular, we obtain some even stronger results in dimension three.
Gradient flows on graphons: existence, convergence, continuity equations

Abstract:Wasserstein gradient flows on probability measures have found a host of applications in various optimization problems. They typically arise as the continuum limit of exchangeable particle systems evolving by some mean-field interaction involving a gradient-type potential. However, in many problems, such as in multi-layer neural networks, the so-called particles are edge weights on large graphs whose nodes are exchangeable. Such large graphs are known to converge to continuum limits called graphons as their size grow to infinity. We show that the Euclidean gradient flow of a suitable function of the edge-weights converges to a novel continuum limit given by a curve on the space of graphons that can be appropriately described as a gradient flow or, more technically, a curve of maximal slope. Several natural functions on graphons, such as homomorphism functions and the scalar entropy, are covered by our set-up, and the examples have been worked out in detail.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the investigation of gradient flows in asymmetric metric spaces (for example, irreversible Finsler manifolds and Minkowski normed spaces) by means of discrete approximation. We study basic properties of curves and upper gradients in asymmetric metric spaces, and establish the existence of a curve of maximal slope, which is regarded as a gradient curve in the non-smooth setting. { Introducing} a natural convexity assumption on the potential function, { which is called the $(p,\lambda)$-convexity,} we also obtain some regularizing effects on the asymptotic behavior of curves of maximal slope. Applications include several existence results for gradient flows in Finsler manifolds, doubly nonlinear differential evolution equations on { infinite-dimensional Funk spaces}, and heat flow on compact Finsler manifolds.

Abstract:In this work the fundamentals of gradient field theories are presented and reviewed. In particular, the theories of gradient magnetostatics and gradient elasticity are investigated and compared. For gradient magnetostatics, non-singular expressions for the magnetic vector gauge potential, the Biot-Savart law, the Lorentz force and the mutual interaction energy of two electric current loops are derived and discussed. For gradient elasticity, non-singular forms of all dislocation key-formulas (Burgers equation, Mura equation, Peach-Koehler stress equation, Peach-Koehler force equation, and mutual interaction energy of two dislocation loops) are presented. In addition, similarities between an electric current loop and a dislocation loop are pointed out. The obtained fields for both gradient theories are non-singular due to a straightforward and self-consistent regularization.

Abstract:Abstract We study the asymptotic behaviour of a gradient system in a regime in which the driving energy becomes singular. For this system gradient-system convergence concepts are ineffective. We characterize the limiting behaviour in a different way, by proving $$\Gamma $$ Γ -convergence of the so-called energy-dissipation functional , which combines the gradient-system components of energy and dissipation in a single functional. The $$\Gamma $$ Γ -limit of these functionals again characterizes a variational evolution, but this limit functional is not the energy-dissipation functional of any gradient system. The system in question describes the diffusion of a particle in a one-dimensional double-well energy landscape, in the limit of small noise. The wells have different depth, and in the small-noise limit the process converges to a Markov process on a two-state system, in which jumps only happen from the higher to the lower well. This transmutation of a gradient system into a variational evolution of non-gradient type is a model for how many one-directional chemical reactions emerge as limit of reversible ones. The $$\Gamma $$ Γ -convergence proved in this paper both identifies the ‘fate’ of the gradient system for these reactions and the variational structure of the limiting irreversible reactions.

Abstract:We prove that given a locally integrable function $f$ on an open set of an Euclidean space the distributional derivative $Xf$ with respect to a locally Lipshitzian vector field $X$ is locally integrable if, and only if, the function $f$ admits a locally integrable upper gradient along the vector field $X$; in this case $Xf$ coincides with the Lie derivative $L_X f$ and $|Xf|$ is the least upper gradient of the function $f$. Applications to systems of locally Lipshitzian vector fields are given.

Abstract:The present notes provide an extended version of a small lecture course given at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin in the Winter Term 2022/23 (of 36 hours). The material starting in Section 5.4 was added afterwards. The aim of these notes to give an introductory overview on the analytical approaches for gradient-flow equations in Hilbert spaces, Banach spaces, and metric spaces and to show that on the first entry level these theories have a lot in common. The theories and their specific setups are illustrated by suitable examples and counterexamples.

Abstract:This note is propaedeutic to the forthcoming work \cite{sil}; here we develop the terminology and results required by that paper. More specifically we introduce the concept of scalarly essentially integrable locally convex vector-valued tensor fields on a smooth manifold, generalize on them the usual operations, in case the manifold is oriented define the weak integral of scalarly essentially integrable locally convex vector-valued maximal forms and finally establish the extension of Stokes theorem for smooth locally convex vector-valued forms. This approach to the basic theory of scalarly essentially integrable and smooth locally convex vector-valued tensor fields seems to us to be new. Specifically are new (1) the definition of the space of scalarly essentially integrable locally convex vector-valued tensor fields as a $\mathcal{A}(U)$-tensor product, although motivated by a result in the usual smooth and real-valued context; (2) the procedure of $\mathcal{A}(U)$-linearizing $\mathcal{A}(U)$-bilinear maps in order to extend the usual operations especially the wedge product; (3) the exploitation of the uniqueness decomposition of the $\mathcal{A}(U)$-tensor product with a free module in order to define not only (a) the exterior differential of smooth locally convex vector-valued forms, but also (b) the weak integral of scalarly essentially integrable locally convex vector-valued maximal forms; (4) the use of the projective topological tensor product theory to define the wedge product.

Tagged barcodes for the topological analysis of gradient-like vector fields

Abstract:Intending to introduce a method for the topological analysis of fields, we present a pipeline that takes as an input a weighted and based chain complex, produces a factored chain complex, and encodes it as a barcode of tagged intervals (briefly, a tagged barcode). We show how to apply this pipeline to the weighted and based chain complex of a gradient-like Morse-Smale vector field on a compact Riemannian manifold in both the smooth and discrete settings. Interestingly for computations, it turns out that there is an isometry between factored chain complexes endowed with the interleaving distance and their tagged barcodes endowed with the bottleneck distance. Concerning stability, we show that the map taking a generic enough gradient-like vector field to its barcode of tagged intervals is continuous. Finally, we prove that the tagged barcode of any such vector field can be approximated by the tagged barcode of a combinatorial version of it with arbitrary precision.

Abstract:This note provides a detailed proof of the fact that a linear vector field on a vector bundle has a flow by vector bundle isomorphisms. It implies then easily the existence of global solutions to linear non-autonomous ODE's, with a standard time-dependent flow construction. As a further application, a simple proof of the smooth triviality of vector bundles over contractible bases is given. Finally, a detailed elementary proof of the isomorphy (as Lie algebras) of all fibers of the kernel of a transitive Lie algebroid is given.

Abstract:The Wasserstein space of probability measures is known for its intricate Riemannian structure, which underpins the Wasserstein geometry and enables gradient flow algorithms. However, the Wasserstein geometry may not be suitable for certain tasks or data modalities. Motivated by scenarios where the global structure of the data needs to be preserved, this work initiates the study of gradient flows and Riemannian structure in the Gromov-Wasserstein (GW) geometry, which is particularly suited for such purposes. We focus on the inner product GW (IGW) distance between distributions on $\mathbb{R}^d$. Given a functional $\mathsf{F}:\mathcal{P}_2(\mathbb{R}^d)\to\mathbb{R}$ to optimize, we present an implicit IGW minimizing movement scheme that generates a sequence of distributions $\{\rho_i\}_{i=0}^n$, which are close in IGW and aligned in the 2-Wasserstein sense. Taking the time step to zero, we prove that the discrete solution converges to an IGW generalized minimizing movement (GMM) $(\rho_t)_t$ that follows the continuity equation with a velocity field $v_t\in L^2(\rho_t;\mathbb{R}^d)$, specified by a global transformation of the Wasserstein gradient of $\mathsf{F}$. The transformation is given by a mobility operator that modifies the Wasserstein gradient to encode not only local information, but also global structure. Our gradient flow analysis leads us to identify the Riemannian structure that gives rise to the intrinsic IGW geometry, using which we establish a Benamou-Brenier-like formula for IGW. We conclude with a formal derivation, akin to the Otto calculus, of the IGW gradient as the inverse mobility acting on the Wasserstein gradient. Numerical experiments validating our theory and demonstrating the global nature of IGW interpolations are provided.

Abstract:We consider the (sub-Riemannian type) control problem of finding a path going from an initial point $x$ to a target point $y$, by only moving in certain admissible directions. We assume that the corresponding vector fields satisfy the bracket-generating (Hörmander) condition, so that the classical Chow-Rashevskii theorem guarantees the existence of such a path. One natural way to try to solve this problem is via a gradient flow on control space. However, since the corresponding dynamics may have saddle points, any convergence result must rely on suitable (e.g. random) initialisation. We consider the case when this initialisation is irregular, which is conveniently formulated via Lyons' rough path theory. We show that one advantage of this initialisation is that the saddle points are moved to infinity, while minima remain at a finite distance from the starting point. In the step $2$-nilpotent case, we further manage to prove that the gradient flow converges to a solution, if the initial condition is the path of a Brownian motion (or rougher). The proof is based on combining ideas from Malliavin calculus with Łojasiewicz inequalities. A possible motivation for our study comes from the training of deep Residual Neural Nets, in the regime when the number of trainable parameters per layer is smaller than the dimension of the data vector.
