Abstract:We study the asymptotic behaviour of the number of times the elephant random walk in the critical regime visits the origin. Our result entails that most zeros of the critical elephant random walk occur shortly before its last passage time at zero. Additionally, we derive the tail estimate of the first return time of the random walk.

Abstract:In the simple random walk the steps are independent, whereas in the Elephant Random Walk (ERW), which was introduced by Schütz and Trimper in 2004, the next step always depends on the whole path so far. In an earlier paper we investigated Elephant Random Walks when the elephant has a restricted memory. Inspired by a suggestion by Bercu et al. (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1902.11220v1" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1902.11220v1">arXiv:1902.11220v1</a>) we extended our results to the case when delays are allowed. In this paper we examine how the number of delays (that possibly stop the process) increases as time goes by.

Elephant random walks with graph based shared memory: First and second order asymptotics

Abstract:We consider a generalization of the so-called elephant random walk by introducing multiple elephants moving along the integer line, $\mathbb{Z}$. When taking a new step, each elephant considers not only its own previous steps but also the past steps of other elephants. The dynamics of "who follows whom" are governed by a directed graph, where each vertex represents an elephant, and the edges indicate that an elephant will consider the past steps of its in-neighbour elephants when deciding its next move. In other words, this model involves a collection of reinforced random walks evolving through graph-based interactions. We briefly investigate the first- and second-order asymptotic behaviour of the joint walks and establish connections with other network-based reinforced stochastic processes studied in the literature. We show that the joint walk can be expressed as a stochastic approximation scheme. In certain regimes, we employ tools from stochastic approximation theory to derive the asymptotic properties of the joint walks. Additionally, in a specific regime, we use better techniques to establish a strong invariance principle and a central limit theorem with improved rates compared to existing results in the stochastic approximation literature. These techniques can also be used to strengthen equivalent results in stochastic approximation theory. As a byproduct, we establish a strong invariance principle for the simple elephant random walk with significantly improved rates.

Abstract:We prove a conjecture by Bertoin that the multi-dimensional elephant random walk on $\mathbb{Z}^d$($d\geq 3$) is transient and the expected number of zeros is finite. We also provide some estimates on the rate of escape. In dimensions $d= 1, 2$, we prove that phase transitions between recurrence and transience occur at $p=(2d+1)/(4d)$. Let $S$ be an elephant random walk with parameter $p$. For $p \leq 3/4$, we provide a Berry-Esseen type bound for properly normalized $S_n$. For $p>3/4$, the distribution of $\lim_{n\to \infty} S_n/n^{2p-1}$ will be studied.

In contrast, in the elephant random walk which was introduced by Schütz and Trimper in 2004, the walker remembers the whole past, and the next step always depends on the whole path so far. Our main aim is to prove analogous results when the elephant has only a restricted memory, for example remembering only the most remote step(s), the most recent step(s) or both. We also extend the models to cover more general step sizes.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate an extended version of the elephant random walk model. Unlike the traditional approach where step sizes remain constant, our model introduces a novel feature: step sizes are generated as a sequence of positive independent and identically distributed random variables, and the step of the walker at time $ n+1 $ depends only on the steps of the walker between times $ 1, ..., m_n $, where $ (m_n)_{n\geqslant 1} $ is a sequence of positive integers growing to infinity as $ n $ goes to infinity. Our main results deal with the validity of the central limit theorem for this new variation of the standard ERW model introduced by Schütz and Trimper in $ 2004 $.

Abstract:The elephant random walk (ERW) is a discrete-time random walk introduced by Schütz and Trimper (2004) in order to investigate how long-range memory affects the behaviour of the random walk. Its particularity is that the next step of the walker depends on its whole past through a parameter p ∈ [0, 1]. In this work, we investigate the validity of the central limit theorem of the ERW when the walker has only a gradually increasing memory. Our contribution provides a positive answer to a conjecture raised in a recent work by Gut and Stadtmüller (2022).

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a generalization of the elephant random walk model. Compared to the usual elephant random walk, an interesting feature of this model is that the step sizes form a sequence of positive independent and identically distributed random variables instead of a fixed constant. For this model, we establish the law of the iterated logarithm, the central limit theorem, and we obtain rates of convergence in the central limit theorem with respect to the Kolmogorov, Zolotarev and Wasserstein distances. We emphasize that, even in case of the usual elephant random walk, our results concerning the rates of convergence in the central limit theorem are new.
A stochastic algorithm approach for the elephant random walk with applications

Abstract:The randomized play-the-winner rule (RPW) is a response-adaptive design proposed by Wei and Durham (1978) for sequentially randomizing patients to treatments in a two-treatment clinical trial so that more patients are assigned to the better treatment as the clinical trial goes on. The elephant random walk (ERW) proposed by Schutz and Trimper (2004) is a non-Markovian discrete-time random walk on $\mathbb Z$ which has a link to a famous saying that elephants can always remember where they have been. The asymptotic behaviors of RPW rule and ERW have been studied in litterateurs independently, and their asymptotic behaviors are very similar. In this paper, we link RPW rule and ERW with the recursive stochastic algorithm. With the help of a recursive stochastic algorithm, we obtain the Gaussian approximation of the ERW and multi-dimensional varying-memory ERW with random step sizes. By the Gaussian approximation, the central limit theorem, precise law of the iterated logarithm, and almost sure central limit theorem are obtained for the multi-dimensional ERW, the multi-dimensional ERW with random step sizes, and their centers of mass for all the diffusive, critical, and superdiffusive regimes. Based on the Gaussian approximation and the small ball probabilities for a new kind of Gaussian process, the precise Chung type laws of the iterated logarithm of the multi-dimensional ERW with random step sizes and its mass of center are also obtained for both the diffusive regime and superdiffusive regime.

Abstract:We establish some limit theorems for the elephant random walk (ERW), including Berry-Esseen's bounds, Cramer moderate deviations and local limit theorems. These limit theorems can be regarded as refinements of the central limit theorem for the ERW. Moreover, by these limit theorems, we conclude that the convergence rate of normal approximations and the domain of attraction of normal distribution mainly depend on a memory parameter p which lies between 0 and 3/4.

Abstract:Elephant random walk is a special type of random walk that incorporates the memory of the past to determine its future steps. The probability of this walk taking a particular step (+1 or -1) at a time point, conditioned on the entire history, depends on a linear function of the proportion of that step till that time point. In this work, we investigate how the dynamics of the random walk will change if we replace this linear function by a generic map satisfying some analytic conditions. We also propose a new model, called the multidimensional generalized elephant random walk, that incorporates several variants of elephant random walk in one and higher dimensions and their generalizations thereof. Using tools from the theory of stochastic approximation, we derive the asymptotic behavior of our model leading to newer results on the phase transition boundary between diffusive and superdiffusive regimes. We also mention a few open problems in this context.

Abstract:Recently, the elephant random walk has attracted a lot of attentions. A wide range of literature is available for the asymptotic behavior of the process, such as the central limit theorems, functional limit theorems and the law of iterated logarithm. However, there is not result concerning Wassertein-1 distance for the normal approximations.In this paper, we show that the Wassertein-1 distance in the central limit theorem is totally different when a memory parameter $p$ belongs to one of the three cases $0< p < 1/2,$ $1/2< p<3/4$ and $p=3/4.$

Abstract:We study the so-called elephant random walk (ERW) which is a non-Markovian discrete-time random walk on ℤ with unbounded memory which exhibits a phase transition from a diffusive to superdiffusive behavior. We prove a law of large numbers and a central limit theorem. Remarkably the central limit theorem applies not only to the diffusive regime but also to the phase transition point which is superdiffusive. Inside the superdiffusive regime, the ERW converges to a non-degenerate random variable which is not normal. We also obtain explicit expressions for the correlations of increments of the ERW.

Abstract:One class of random walks with infinite memory, so called elephant random walks, are simple models describing anomalous diffusion. We present a surprising connection between these models and bond percolation on random recursive trees. We use a coupling between the two models to translate results from elephant random walks to the percolation process. We calculate, besides other quantities, exact expressions for the first and the second moment of the root cluster size and of the number of nodes in child clusters of the first generation. We further introduce a new model, the skew elephant random walk and calculate the first and second moment of this process.

Abstract:Gut and Stadmüller (2021, 2022) initiated the study of the elephant random walk with limited memory. Aguech and El Machkouri (2024) published a paper in which they discuss an extension of results by Gut and Stadtmüller (2022) for an "increasing memory" version of the elephant random walk without stops. Here we present a formal definition of the process which has been hinted at Eq. (2.2) in Gut and Stadtmüller (2022). This definition is based on the triangular array setting. We give a positive answer to the open problem in Gut and Stadtmüller (2022) for the elephant random walk, possibly with stops. We also obtain the CLT for the supercritical case of this model.

On the limit law of the superdiffusive elephant random walk

Abstract:When the memory parameter of the elephant random walk is above a critical threshold, the process becomes superdiffusive and, once suitably normalised, converges to a non-Gaussian random variable. In a recent paper by the three first authors, it was shown that this limit variable has a density and that the associated moments satisfy a nonlinear recurrence relation. In this work, we exploit this recurrence to derive an asymptotic expansion of the moments and the asymptotic behaviour of the density at infinity. In particular, we show that an asymmetry in the distribution of the first step of the random walk leads to an asymmetry of the tails of the limit variable. These results follow from a new, explicit expression of the Stieltjes transformation of the moments in terms of special functions such as hypergeometric series and incomplete beta integrals. We also obtain other results about the random variable, such as unimodality and, for certain values of the memory parameter, log-concavity.

Abstract:We study the elephant random walk in arbitrary dimension $d\geq 1$. Our main focus is the limiting random variable appearing in the superdiffusive regime. Building on a link between the elephant random walk and Pólya-type urn models, we prove a fixed-point equation (or system in dimension two and larger) for the limiting variable. Based on this, we deduce several properties of the limit distribution, such as the existence of a density with support on $\mathbb R^d$ for $d\in\{1,2,3\}$, and we bring evidence for a similar result for $d\geq 4$. We also investigate the moment-generating function of the limit and give, in dimension $1$, a non-linear recurrence relation for the moments.
