Abstract:We consider the classical field theory of 2+1-dimensional Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory on an arbitrary spatial manifold. We first define a gauge covariant transverse electric field strength, which together with the gauge covariant scalar magnetic field strength can be taken as coordinates on the classical phase space. We then determine the Poisson-Dirac bracket and find that these coordinates are canonically conjugate to each other. The Hamiltonian is non-polynomial when expressed in terms of these coordinates, but can be expanded in a power series in the coupling constant with polynomial coefficients.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to find a set of convenient phase - space coordinates in the Yang - Mills - Chern - Simons (YMCS) theory in 2 + 1 - dimensional spacetime and determine the Poisson - Dirac brackets between these coordinates to show that they are canonically conjugate. In addition, the paper also tries to represent the Hamiltonian in terms of these coordinates. Although the Hamiltonian is non - polynomial, it can be expanded into a power series form of the coupling constant \(\lambda\). Specifically, the paper focuses on how to define a set of gauge - covariant transverse electric field strength \(E_{\perp}\) and magnetic scalar field strength \(B\) as coordinates of the phase - space in the presence of a timelike Killing vector field. These coordinates are not only gauge - covariant but also canonically conjugate, that is, they satisfy specific Poisson - Dirac bracket relations: \[ \{ \int d^{2}x\sqrt{g}\text{Tr}(SB), \int d^{2}x\sqrt{g}\text{Tr}(TB)\} = 0 \] \[ \{ \int d^{2}x\sqrt{g}\text{Tr}(SE_{\perp}), \int d^{2}x\sqrt{g}\text{Tr}(TB)\} = \lambda^{2}\int d^{2}x\sqrt{g}\text{Tr}(ST) \] \[ \{ \int d^{2}x\sqrt{g}\text{Tr}(SE_{\perp}), \int d^{2}x\sqrt{g}\text{Tr}(TE_{\perp})\} = 0 \] where \(S\) and \(T\) are arbitrary Lie - algebra - valued scalar fields. Through these coordinates, the paper further derives the expression of the Hamiltonian \(H\) and expands it into a power series form of the coupling constant \(\lambda\). This is helpful for understanding the quantization process of the YMCS theory. In particular, the use of gauge - invariant phase - space coordinates is of great significance for the analysis of both classical and quantum theories. In summary, the main objective of the paper is to provide a set of convenient and gauge - covariant phase - space coordinates in order to better understand and handle the dynamical problems in the YMCS theory.
