Abstract:In this paper we study half-BPS type IIB supergravity solutions with multiple $AdS_3\times S^3\times M_4$ asymptotic regions, where $M_4$ is either $T^4$ or $K_3$. These solutions were first constructed in [1] and have geometries given by the warped product of $AdS_2 \times S^2 \times M_4 $ over $\Sigma$, where $\Sigma$ is a Riemann surface. We show that the holographic boundary has the structure of a star graph, i.e. $n$ half-lines joined at a point. The attractor mechanism and the relation of the solutions to junctions of self-dual strings in six-dimensional supergravity are discussed. The solutions of [1] are constructed introducing two meromorphic and two harmonic functions defined on $\Sigma$. We focus our analysis on solutions corresponding to junctions of three different conformal field theories and show that the conditions for having a solution charged only under Ramond-Ramond three-form fields reduce to relations involving the positions of the poles and the residues of the relevant harmonic and meromorphic functions. The degeneration limit in which some of the poles collide is analyzed in detail. Finally, we calculate the holographic boundary entropy for a junction of three CFTs and obtain a simple expression in terms of poles and residues.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss lumps (sigma model instantons) in flag manifold sigma models. In particular, we focus on the moduli space of BPS lumps in general Kähler flag manifold sigma models. Such a Kähler flag manifold, which takes the form $\frac{U(n_1+\cdots+ n_{L+1})}{U(n_1) \times \cdots \times U(n_{L+1})}$, can be realized as a vacuum moduli space of a $U(N_1) \times \cdots \times U(N_L)$ quiver gauged linear sigma model. When the gauge coupling constants are finite, the gauged linear sigma model admits BPS vortex configurations, which reduce to BPS lumps in the low energy effective sigma model in the large gauge coupling limit. We derive an ADHM-like quotient construction of the moduli space of BPS vortices and lumps by generalizing the quotient construction in $U(N)$ gauge theories by Hanany and Tong. As an application, we check the dualities of the 2d models by computing the vortex partition functions using the quotient construction.

Abstract:Since it has been pointed out that physics beyond the Standard Model may be constrained by gravitational waves from cosmic strings, it has been more important to clarify in what cases cosmic strings are formed. We study the stability of the embedded string which is formed when $SU(N)\times U(1)_X$ gauge symmetries are broken to $SU(N-1)\times U(1)_Q$, and find that the stability condition can be determined by two mass ratios of the Higgs and massive gauge bosons, and does not explicitly depend on $N$. We also show that the result can be extended in supersymmetric models. In addition, we apply these results to several models and discuss the important feature of the Higgs to produce the embedded string. Although we find it difficult to be satisfied in normal realistic GUT models, it is possible if $SU(N)$ and $U(1)_X$ have different origins.

Abstract:We carry out a systematic study of the effective bosonic string describing confining flux tubes in $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ Yang--Mills theories in three spacetime dimensions. While their low-energy properties are known to be universal and are described well by the Nambu--Gotō action, a non-trivial dependence on the gauge group is encoded in a series of undetermined subleading corrections in an expansion around the limit of an arbitrarily long string. We quantify the first two of these corrections by means of high-precision Monte Carlo simulations of Polyakov-loop correlators in the lattice regularization. We compare the results of novel lattice simulations for theories with $N=3$ and $6$ color charges, and report an improved estimate for the $N=2$ case, discussing the approach to the large-$N$ limit. Our results are compatible with analytical bounds derived from the S-matrix bootstrap approach. In addition, we also present a new test of the Svetitsky--Yaffe conjecture for the $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ theory in three dimensions, finding that the lattice results for the Polyakov-loop correlation function are in excellent agreement with the predictions of the Svetitsky--Yaffe mapping, which are worked out quantitatively applying conformal perturbation theory to the three-state Potts model in two dimensions. The implications of these results are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss lumps (sigma model instantons) in flag manifold sigma models. In particular, we focus on the moduli space of BPS lumps in general Kähler flag manifold sigma models. Abstract:With the aim of investigating the existence of an integrable elliptic deformation of strings on $\mathsf{AdS}_3 \times \mathsf{S}^3 \times \mathsf{T}^4$, we compute the tree-level worldsheet S-matrix of the elliptically-deformed bosonic sigma model on $\mathsf{AdS}_3 \times \mathsf{S}^3$ in uniform light-cone gauge. The simplicity of these solutions suggests they are promising candidates to lead to an integrable string sigma model including fermions.

Non-Supersymmetric Heterotic Strings on a Circle

Abstract:Motivated by a recent construction of non-supersymmetric $\text{AdS}_3$, we revisit the $O(16)\times O(16)$ heterotic string compactified on a torus. The string one-loop potential energy has interesting dependence on the classical moduli; extrema of this potential include loci where the gauge symmetry is maximally enhanced. Focusing on the case of a circle, we use lattice embeddings to find the maximal enhancement points together with their spectra of massless and tachyonic modes. We find an extended Dynkin diagram that encodes the global structure of the moduli space, as well as all symmetry enhancements and the loci where they occur. We find $107$ points of maximal enhancement with $8$ that are free of tachyons. The tachyon-free points each have positive cosmological constant. We determine the profile of the potential energy near each of these points and find that one is a maximum while three are saddle points. The remaining four live at the boundary of a tachyonic region in field space. In this way, we show that every point of maximal symmetry enhancement is unstable. We further find that the curvature of this stringy potential satisfies the de Sitter swampland conjecture. Finally, we discuss the implications for constructions of $\text{AdS}_3$.

Susy breaking soft terms in the supersymmetric Pati-Salam landscape from Intersecting D6-Branes

Abstract:We investigate the supersymmetry breaking soft terms for all the viable models in the complete landscape of three-family supersymmetric Pati-Salam models arising from intersecting D6-branes on a $\mathbb{T}^6/(\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2)$ orientifold in type IIA string theory. The calculations are performed in the general scenario of $u$-moduli dominance with the $s$-moduli turned on, where the soft terms remain independent of the Yukawa couplings and the Wilson lines. The results for the trilinear coupling, gaugino-masses, squared-mass parameters of squarks, sleptons and Higgs depend on the brane wrapping numbers and the susy breaking parameters. We find that unlike the Yukawa couplings which remain unchanged for the models dual under the exchange of two SU(2) sectors, the corresponding soft term parameters only match for the trilinear coupling and the mass of the gluino. This can be explained by the internal geometry where the Yukawa interactions depend only on the triangular areas of the worldsheet instantons while the soft terms have an additional dependence on the orientation-angles of D6-branes in the three two-tori. In the special limit of parameter space we find universal masses for the Higgs and the gauginos.

Weak Hopf symmetry and tube algebra of the generalized multifusion string-net model

Abstract:We investigate the multifusion generalization of string-net ground states and lattice Hamiltonians, delving into its associated weak Hopf symmetry. For the multifusion string-net, the gauge symmetry manifests as a general weak Hopf algebra, leading to a reducible vacuum string label; the charge symmetry, serving as a quantum double of gauge symmetry, constitutes a connected weak Hopf algebra. This implies that the associated topological phase retains its characterization by a unitary modular tensor category (UMTC). The bulk charge symmetry can also be captured by a weak Hopf tube algebra. We offer an explicit construction of the weak Hopf tube algebra structure and thoroughly discuss its properties. The gapped boundary and domain wall models are extensively discussed, with these $1d$ phases characterized by unitary multifusion categories (UMFCs). We delve into the gauge and charge symmetries of these $1d$ phases, as well as the construction of the boundary and domain wall tube algebras. Additionally, we illustrate that the domain wall tube algebra can be regarded as a cross product of two boundary tube algebras. As an application of our model, we elucidate how to interpret the defective string-net as a restricted multifusion string-net.

Superconducting strings in the two-Higgs doublet model

Abstract:We present superconducting vortex solutions in the two-Higgs doublet model which has a gauged $U(1)$ Higgs-family symmetry. We write down an ansatz for the solution and study its basic properties, for the case of both global and gauged symmetries. We demonstrate its prima-facie stability using 3D numerical simulations of a global version of the theory, observing the flow of current along the string. We discuss how generic such a phenomena might be and the possible consequences if such a model is found in nature.

Abstract:We consider Little String Theories (LSTs) that are engineered by N parallel M5-branes probing a transverse Z M geometry. By exploiting a dual description in terms of F-theory compactified on a toric Calabi-Yau threefold X N , M , we establish numerous symmetries that leave the BPS partition function Z N , M invariant. They furthemore act in a non-perturbative fashion from the point of view of the low energy quiver gauge theory associated with the LST. We present different group theoretical organisations of these symmetries, thereby generalising the results of [1] to the case of generic M ≥ 1. We also provide a Mathematica package that allows to represent them in terms of matrices that act linearly on the Kähler parameters of X N , M . From the perspective of dual realisations of the LSTs the symmetries found here act in highly nontrivial ways: as an example, we consider a formulation of Z N , M in terms of correlation functions of a vertex operator algebra, whose commutation relations are governed by an affine quiver algebra. We show the impact of the symmetry transformations on the latter and discuss invariance of Z N , M from this perspective for concrete examples.

Abstract:We study the Levin-Wen string-net model with a Z(N) type fusion algebra. Solutions of the local constraints of this model correspond to Z(N) gauge theory and double Chern-Simons theories with quantum groups. For the first time, we explicitly construct a spin-(N - 1)/2 model with Z(N) gauge symmetry on a triangular lattice as an exact dual model of the string-net model with a Z(N) type fusion algebra on a honeycomb lattice. This exact duality exists only when the spins are coupled to a Z(N) gauge field living on the links of the triangular lattice. The ungauged Z(N) lattice spin models are a class of quantum systems that bear symmetry-protected topological phases that may be classified by the third cohomology group H-3(Z(N), U(1)) of Z(N). Abstract:We propose that string theory on ${\rm AdS}_3 \times {\rm S}^3 \times {\rm S}^3 \times {\rm S}^1$ with $\textit{two}$ units of NS-NS flux through each of the two $3$-spheres is exactly dual to the symmetric orbifold of $2$ bosons and $8$ free fermions. Here, one of the two bosons describes the compact ${\rm S}^1$, while the other one corresponds to the radial (non-compact) direction of ${\rm AdS}_3$. Unlike the analogous situation for ${\rm AdS}_3 \times {\rm S}^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4$, the description makes sense both in the NS-R as well as the hybrid formulation, and we explain the duality in both frameworks.

BPS Dynamics of Triple (p,q) String Junction

Abstract:We study dynamics of triple junction of (p,q) strings in Type IIB string theory. We probe tension and mass density of (p,q) strings by studying harmonic fluctuations of the triple junction. We show that they agree perfectly with BPS formula provided suitable geometric interpretation of the junction is given. We provide a precise statement of BPS limit and force-balance property. At weak coupling and sufficiently dense limit, we argue that (p,q)-string embedded in string network is a `wiggly string', whose low-energy dynamics can be described via renormalization group evolved, smooth effective non-relativistic string. We also suggest the possibility that, upon Type IIB strings are promoted to M-theory membrane, there can exist `evanescent' bound-states at triple junction in the continuum.
