Abstract:Golan and Sapir proved that Thompson's groups F , T and V have linear divergence. In the current paper, we focus on the divergence property of several generalisations of the Thompson groups. We first consider the Brown-Thompson groups , and (also called Brown-Higman-Thompson group in some other context) and find that these groups also have linear divergence functions. We then focus on the braided Thompson groups BF , and and prove that these groups have linear divergence. The case of BV has also been done independently by Kodama.

Abstract:We generalize the concept of divergence of finitely generated groups by introducing the upper and lower relative divergence of a finitely generated group with respect to a subgroup. Upper relative divergence generalizes Gersten's notion of divergence, and lower relative divergence generalizes a definition of Cooper-Mihalik. While the lower divergence of Cooper-Mihalik can only be linear or exponential, relative lower divergence can be any polynomial or exponential function. In this paper, we examine the relative divergence (both upper and lower) of a group with respect to a normal subgroup or a cyclic subgroup. We also explore relative divergence of $\CAT(0)$ groups and relatively hyperbolic groups with respect to various subgroups to better understand geometric properties of these groups.

Divergent geodesics in the Universal Teichmüller space

Abstract:Thurston boundary of the universal Teichmüller space $T(\mathbb{D})$ is the space $PML_{bdd}(\mathbb{D})$ of projective bounded measured laminations of $\mathbb{D}$. A geodesic ray in $T(\mathbb{D})$ is of generalized Teichmüller type if it shrinks the vertical foliation of a holomorphic quadratic differential. We provide the first examples of generalized Teichmüller rays which diverge near Thurston boundary $PLM_{bdd}(\mathbb{D})$. Moreover, for every $k\geq 1$ we construct examples of rays with limit sets homeomorphic to $k$-dimensional cubes. For the latter result we utilize the classical Kronecker approximation theorem from number theory which states that if $\theta_1,\ldots,\theta_k$ are rationally independent reals then the sequence $(\{\theta_1 n\},\ldots,\{\theta_k n\})$ is dense in the $k$-torus $\mathbb{T}^k$.

Conformal dynamics at infinity for groups with contracting elements

Abstract:This paper develops a theory of conformal density at infinity for groups with contracting elements. We start by introducing a class of convergence boundary encompassing many known hyperbolic-like boundaries, on which a detailed study of conical points and Myrberg points is carried out. The basic theory of conformal density is then established, including the Sullivan shadow lemma and Hopf-Tsuji-Sullivan theorem. This gives a unification of the theory of conformal density on the Gromov and Floyd boundary for (relatively) hyperbolic groups, the visual boundary for rank-1 CAT(0) groups, and Thurston boundary for mapping class groups. Besides that, the conformal density on the horofunction boundary provides a new important example of our general theory. At last, we present applications towards the co-growth problem of divergent groups, measure theoretical results for CAT(0) groups and mapping class groups.

Abstract:In this paper we develop a new explicit method to studying rational points near manifolds and obtain optimal lower bounds on the number of rational points of bounded height lying at a given distance from an arbitrary non-degenerate curve. This generalises previous results for analytic non-degenerate curves. Furthermore, the main results are also proved in the inhomogeneous setting. Applications of the main theorem include the Khintchine-Jarník type theorem for divergence for arbitrary non-degenerate curve in $\mathbb{R}^n$.

Abstract:The authors study the finite decomposition complexity of metric spaces of H , equipped with different metrics, where H is a subgroup of the linear group GL ∞ (ℤ). It is proved that there is an injective Lipschitz map φ : ( F, d S ) → ( H, d ), where F is the Thompson’s group, dS the word-metric of F with respect to the finite generating set S and d a metric of H . But it is not a proper map. Meanwhile, it is proved that φ : ( F, d S ) → ( H, d 1 ) is not a Lipschitz map, where d 1 is another metric of H .

Abstract:We give an asymptotic formula as $t\to+\infty$ for the number of common perpendiculars of length at most $t$ between two divergent geodesics or a divergent geodesic and a compact locally convex subset in negatively curved locally symmetric spaces with exponentially mixing geodesic flow, presenting a surprising non-purely exponential growth. We apply this result to count ambiguous geodesics in the modular orbifold recovering results of Sarnak, and to confirm and extend a conjecture of Motohashi on the binary additive divisor problem in imaginary quadratic number fields.

Abstract:We describe standard forms for elements of the higher-dimensional Thompson groups $nV$ arising from gridding subdivision processes. These processes lead to standard normal form descriptions for elements in these groups, and sizes of these standard forms estimate the word length with respect to finite generating sets. These gridded forms lead to standard algebraic descriptions as well, with respect to the both infinite and finite generating sets for these groups.

Abstract:The divergence map, an important ingredient in the algebraic description of the Turaev cobracket on a connected oriented compact surface with boundary, is reformulated in the context of non-commutative geometry using a flat connection on the space of 1-forms on a formally smooth associative algebra. We then extend this construction to the case of associative algebras with any finite cohomological dimension, which allows us to give a similar algebraic description of the Turaev cobracket on a closed surface. We also look into a relation between the Satoh trace and the divergence map on a free Lie algebra via geometry over Lie operad.

Abstract:For $d\ge 3$ we first show that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of $A$-divergent on average points in the $(d-1)$-dimensional closed horosphere in the space of $d$-dimensional Euclidean lattices, where $A$ is the group of positive diagonal matrices, is at most $\frac{d-1}{2}$. In particular, this upper bound is sharp for $d=3$.

Abstract:We rigorously quantify the improvement in the sample complexity of variational divergence estimations for group-invariant distributions. In the cases of the Wasserstein-1 metric and the Lipschitz-regularized $\alpha$-divergences, the reduction of sample complexity is proportional to the group size if the group is finite. In addition to the published version at ICML 2023, our proof indeed has included the case when the group is infinite such as compact Lie groups, the convergence rate can be further improved and depends on the intrinsic dimension of the fundamental domain characterized by the scaling of its covering number. Our approach is different from that in [Tahmasebi & Jegelka, ICML 2024] and our work also applies to asymmetric divergences, such as the Lipschitz-regularized $\alpha$-divergences. For the maximum mean discrepancy (MMD), the improvement of sample complexity is more nuanced, as it depends on not only the group size but also the choice of kernel. Numerical simulations verify our theories.

Abstract:Random hyperspherical harmonics are Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on the unit $d$-dimensional sphere ($d\ge 2$). We study the convergence in Total Variation distance for their nonlinear statistics in the high energy limit, i.e., for diverging sequences of Laplace eigenvalues. Our approach takes advantage of a recent result by Bally, Caramellino and Poly (2020): combining the Central Limit Theorem in Wasserstein distance obtained by Marinucci and Rossi (2015) for Hermite-rank $2$ functionals with new results on the asymptotic behavior of their Malliavin-Sobolev norms, we are able to establish second order Gaussian fluctuations in this stronger probability metric as soon as the functional is regular enough. Our argument requires some novel estimates on moments of products of Gegenbauer polynomials that may be of independent interest, which we prove via the link between graph theory and diagram formulas.

Abstract:The divergence of a group is a quasi-isometry invariant defined in terms of pairs of points and lengths of paths avoiding a suitable ball around the identity. In this paper we study "random divergence'', meaning the divergence at two points chosen according to independent random walks or Markov chains; the Markov chains version can be turned into a quasi-isometry invariant. We show that in many cases, such as for relatively hyperbolic groups, mapping class groups, and right-angled Artin groups, the divergence at two randomly chosen points is with high probability equivalent to the divergence of the group. That is, generic points realise the largest possible divergence.

Abstract:R. Thom's gradient conjecture states that if a gradient flow of an analytic function converges to a limit, it does so along a unique limiting direction. In this paper, we extend and settle this conjecture in the context of infinite dimensional problems. Building on the foundational works of Łojasiewicz, L. Simon, and the resolution of the conjecture for finite dimensional cases by Kurdyka-Mostowski-Parusinski, we focus on nonlinear evolutions on Riemannian manifolds as studied by L. Simon. This framework includes geometric PDEs such as minimal surface, harmonic map, mean curvature flow, and normalized Yamabe flow. Our main result not only confirms the uniqueness of the limiting direction but also characterizes the rate of convergence and possible limiting directions for both classical and infinite dimensional settings.

Finiteness properties of generalized Thompson groups via expansion sets

Abstract:We outline a general procedure that builds classifying spaces for generalized Thompson groups $\Gamma$. The construction depends on a small number of choices: (1) an inverse semigroup $S$ of partial transformations that ``locally determine" $\Gamma$; (2) an equivalence relation on certain pairs $(f,D)$, and (3) an ``expansion" rule $\mathcal{E}$. These choices determine an \emph{expansion set} $\mathcal{B}$, which is a combinatorial device that outputs a simplicial complex $\Delta^{f}_{\mathcal{B}}$ upon which $\Gamma$ acts. Under favorable conditions, often achieved in practice, $\Delta^{f}_{\mathcal{B}}$ is contractible, and the action of $\Gamma$ has small stabilizers. The definition of $\Delta^{f}_{\mathcal{B}}$ is such that ascending and descending links in $\Delta^{f}_{\mathcal{B}}$ can be described via formulas that depend only on the expansion rule $\mathcal{E}$. The result is to facilitate the usual computations of the connectivity of the descending link. Under natural hypotheses, one can prove that the acting group has type $F_{\infty}$. The net effect of our results is to automate results of this kind. Several applications are given; in particular, we sketch unified proofs that $V$, $nV$, Röver's group $G$, and the Lodha-Moore group have type $F_{\infty}$.

Abstract:We consider transcendental entire functions that are compositions of a polynomial and the exponential for which all singular values escape on disjoint rays. Based on their classification in [B3] we investigate their dependence on parameters, that is, on the potentials and external addresses of singular values. Using continuity argument we generalize the classification in [B3] to the case when dynamic rays containing singular values are (pre-)periodic.

Abstract:It is known that there exist functions in certain de Branges--Rovnyak spaces whose Taylor series diverge in norm, even though polynomials are dense in the space. This is often proved by showing that the sequence of Taylor partial sums is unbounded in norm. In this note we show that it can even happen that the Taylor partial sums tend to infinity in norm. We also establish similar results for lower-triangular summability methods such as the Cesàro means.

Abstract:We present a new proof of the classical divergence theorem in bounded domains. Our proof is based on a nonlocal analog of the divergence theorem and a rescaling argument. Main ingredients in the proof are nonlocal versions of the divergence and the normal derivative.
