Abstract:We study the behaviour of continuous automorphism groups of quantum spin systems on the lattice. Whereas the shift is norm asymptotically abelian continuous automorphism groups can lead only to delocalization but not to norm asymptotic abelianess. As a consequence the shift does not allow a continuous extension.

Abstract:This article introduces the notion of good labellings for asymptotic lattices in order to study joint spectra of quantum integrable systems from the point of view of inverse spectral theory. As an application, we consider a new spectral quantity for a quantum integrable system, the quantum rotation number. In the case of two degrees of freedom, we obtain a constructive algorithm for the detection of appropriate labellings for joint eigenvalues, which we use to prove that, in the semiclassical limit, the quantum rotation number can be calculated on a joint spectrum in a robust way, and converges to the well-known classical rotation number. The general results are applied to the semitoric case where formulas become particularly natural.

Abstract:On a one-dimensional lattice without uniform interval, the Hermitian conjugation of a q-differential operator is discussed. Then a deformation of quantum mechanics in one dimension is presented. As an application, the harmonic oscillator is discussed. The energy spectrum and the eigenfunctions are shown to depend on an arbitrary deformation function. The deformed coherent states are also discussed. It is found that the completeness relation of coherent states holds for the case of q-coherent states, i.e. the deformation of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra is a q-analogue Hopf algebra.
Almost everywhere ergodicity in quantum lattice models

Abstract:We rigorously examine the ergodic properties of quantum lattice models with short range interactions, in the C* algebra formulation of statistical mechanics. Ergodicity results, in the context of group actions on C* algebras, assume that the algebra is asymptotically abelian, which is not the case for time evolution. The Lieb-Robinson bound tells us that the spatial extent of the time evolution of operators is exponentially small outside a light-cone, defined by the Lieb-Robinson velocity. More precisely, this means that the algebra of observables is asymptotically abelian only in a space-like region. This implies a form of ergodicity outside the light-cone, but what happens within it? We show that the long-time average of connected correlation functions of observables, along space-time rays of almost every speed, vanishes. This holds in any state that is invariant under space-time translations and that satisfies weak clustering properties in space. Further, we show that the long-time limit of the n-th moment, with respect to the state, of a ray-averaged observable converges to the n-th power of its ensemble average, which means that there are no fluctuations of ray averages in the long time limit. This is a statement of ergodicity. The ray averages can also be performed in a way that accounts for oscillations, showing that correlations (and moments) of the ray averaged observables cannot sustainably oscillate in the long time limit. Finally, we show that in the GNS representation of the algebra of observables, for any KMS state with the above properties, the long-time limit of the ray averaged commutator converges (in the strong operator topology (SOT)) to 0 and the ray average of any observable converges (in the SOT) to a multiple of the identity. This indicates that observables get "thinner" almost everywhere within the light-cone.

Abstract:Bandlimited approaches to quantum field theory offer the tantalizing possibility of working with fields that are simultaneously both continuous and discrete via the Shannon Sampling Theorem from signal processing. Conflicting assumptions in general relativity and quantum field theory motivate the use of such an appealing analytical tool that could thread the needle to meet both requirements. Bandlimited continuous quantum fields are isomorphic to lattice theories, yet without requiring a fixed lattice. Any lattice with a required minimum spacing can be used. This is an isomorphism that avoids taking the limit of the lattice spacing going to zero. In this work, we explore the consequences of this isomorphism, including the emergence of effectively continuous symmetries in quantum lattice theories. One obtains conserved lattice observables for these continuous symmetries, as well as a duality of locality from the two perspectives. We expect this work and its extensions to provide useful tools for considering numerical lattice models of continuous quantum fields arising from the availability of discreteness without a fixed lattice, as well as offering new insights into emergent continuous symmetries in lattice models and possible laboratory demonstrations of these phenomena.

Quantum Cellular Automata from Lattice Field Theories

Abstract:We apply the methods of lattice field theories to the quantization of cellular automata. We discuss the quantization of five main categories of cellular automata: bosonic, fermionic, supersymmetric, spin and quantum dot using path integral and operator formalisms of lattice field theories. We show that the quantization of supersymmetric cellular automata is related to recently discussed string bit models of Thorn and Bergman and represents a link of cellular automata theory to fundamental physics. We discuss spin and quantum dot cellular automata for their importance in experimental realizations and their use in quantum computation. Previous studies of quantum cellular automata utilize the wave function values as cell contents and the discretized linear Dirac equation as an update equation. We show that our approach to the quantization of fermionic cellular automata includes this utilization as a field equation, and in addition allows for nonlinearity through lattice field interactions.

Abstract:We explore the potential application of quantum computers to the examination of lattice holography, which extends to the strongly-coupled bulk theory regime. With adiabatic evolution, we compute the ground state of a spin system on a $(2+1)$-dimensional hyperbolic lattice, and measure the spin-spin correlation function on the boundary. Notably, we observe that with achievable resources for coming quantum devices, the correlation function demonstrates an approximate scale-invariant behavior, aligning with the pivotal theoretical predictions of the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory correspondence.

Abstract:We follow recent formulations of dimensionally reduced loop operators for quantum field theories and exact representations of probabilistic lattice dynamics to identify a new scheme for the evaluation of partition function zeroes, allowing for the explicit analysis of quantum critical phenomena. This new approach gives partition function zeroes from a factored quantum loop operator basis and, as we show, constitutes an effective mapping of the renormalization group $\beta$-function onto the noncommuting local operator basis of a countably finite Hilbert space. The Vafa-Witten theorem for CP-violation and related complex action problems of Euclidean Field theories are discussed, following recent treatments, and are shown to be natural consequences of the analyticity of the limiting distribution of these zeroes, and properties of vacuum regimes governed by a dominant quantum fluctuation in the vicinity of a renormalization group equation fixed point in the infrared.

Abstract:We study the topological structure of the automorphism groups of compact quantum groups showing that, in parallel to a classical result due to Iwasawa, the connected component of identity of the automorphism group and of the “inner” automorphism group coincide. For compact matrix quantum groups, which can be thought of as quantum analogues of compact Lie groups, we prove that the inner automorphism group is a compact Lie group and the outer automorphism group is discrete. Applications of this to the study of group actions on compact quantum groups are highlighted. We end by providing examples of compact matrix quantum groups with infinitely-generated fusion rings, in stark contrast with the classical situation. Along the way we study the invariant theory of finite group actions on free Laurent rings and show that the rings of invariants are, in general, not finitely generated.

Abstract:We investigate the critical scaling of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnet on the square lattice in the easy-plane (XXZ) regime, via numerical measurements of the entanglement entropy constructed from the zeroes of a polynomial ring. We relate these results to conformal field theory predictions for the area law scaling of entanglement entropyin the vicinity of quantum critical points in gapless conformally invariant 2d quantum systems, and in gapless systems with finite Fermi surfaces. Our measurements are focused in three low-temperature regions at fixed XXZ anisotropies of $\Delta=1.01$, $\Delta=1.78$ and $\Delta=2.0$ which probe the quantum regime between the N\'eel point and Ising phase.
Asymptotic behaviour of the lattice Green function

Abstract:The lattice Green function, i.e., the resolvent of the discrete Laplace operator, is fundamental in probability theory and mathematical physics. We derive its long-distance behaviour via a detailed analysis of an integral representation involving modified Bessel functions. Our emphasis is on the decay of the massive lattice Green function in the vicinity of the massless (critical) case, and the recovery of Euclidean isotropy in the massless limit. This provides a prototype for the expected but unproven long-distance behaviour of near-critical two-point functions in statistical mechanical models such as percolation, the Ising model, and the self-avoiding walk above their upper critical dimensions.

Asymptotic Cohomology and Uniform Stability for Lattices in Semisimple Groups

Abstract:It is, by now, classical that lattices in higher rank semisimple groups have various rigidity properties. In this work, we add another such rigidity property to the list: uniform stability with respect to the family of unitary operators on finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces equipped with submultiplicative norms. Namely, we show that for (most) high-rank lattices, every finite-dimensional unitary "almost-representation" of $\Gamma$ is a small deformation of a (true) unitary representation. This extends a result of Kazhdan (1983) for amenable groups and of Burger-Ozawa-Thom (2013) for SL(n,Z) (for n>2). Towards this goal, we first build an elaborate cohomological theory capturing the obstruction to such stability, and show that the vanishing of second cohomology implies uniform stability in this setting. This cohomology can be roughly thought of as an asymptotic version of bounded cohomology, and sheds light on a question raised in Monod (2006) about a possible connection between vanishing of second bounded cohomology and Ulam stability.

Abstract:We investigate nematic quantum phase transitions in two different Dirac fermion models. The models feature twofold and fourfold, respectively, lattice rotational symmetries that are spontaneously broken in the ordered phase. Using negative-sign-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations and an ε-expansion renormalization group analysis, we show that both models exhibit continuous phase transitions. In contrast to generic Gross-Neveu dynamical mass generation, the quantum critical regime is characterized by large velocity anisotropies, with fixed-point values being approached very slowly. Both experimental and numerical investigations will not be representative of the infrared fixed point, but of a quasiuniversal regime where the drift of the exponents tracks the velocity anisotropy.

Quantum Phases and Transitions in Spin Chains with Non-Invertible Symmetries

Abstract:Generalized symmetries often appear in the form of emergent symmetries in low energy effective descriptions of quantum many-body systems. Non-invertible symmetries are a particularly exotic class of generalized symmetries, in that they are implemented by transformations that do not form a group. Such symmetries appear in large families of gapless states of quantum matter and constrain their low-energy dynamics. To provide a UV-complete description of such symmetries, it is useful to construct lattice models that respect these symmetries exactly. In this paper, we discuss two families of one-dimensional lattice Hamiltonians with finite on-site Hilbert spaces: one with (invertible) $S^{\,}_3$ symmetry and the other with non-invertible $\mathsf{Rep}(S^{\,}_3)$ symmetry. Our models are largely analytically tractable and demonstrate all possible spontaneous symmetry breaking patterns of these symmetries. Moreover, we use numerical techniques to study the nature of continuous phase transitions between the different symmetry-breaking gapped phases associated with both symmetries. Both models have self-dual lines, where the models are enriched by so-called intrinsically non-invertible symmetries generated by Kramers-Wannier-like duality transformations. We provide explicit lattice operators that generate these non-invertible self-duality symmetries. We show that the enhanced symmetry at the self-dual lines is described by a 2+1D symmetry-topological-order (SymTO) of type $\mathrm{JK}^{\,}_4\boxtimes \overline{\mathrm{JK}}^{\,}_4$. The condensable algebras of the SymTO determine the allowed gapped and gapless states of the self-dual $S^{\,}_3$-symmetric and $\mathsf{Rep}(S^{\,}_3)$-symmetric models.

Abstract:The automorphism group of a quantised coordinate algebra is usually much smaller than that of its classical counterpart. Nevertheless, these automorphism groups are often very difficult to calculate. In this paper, we calculate the automorphism group of the quantum grassmannian in the case that the deformation parameter is not a root of unity. The main tool employed is the dehomogenisation equality which shows that a localisation of the quantum grassmannian is equal to a skew Laurent extension of quantum matrices. This equality is used to connect the automorphism group of the quantum grassmannian with that of quantum matrices, where the automorphism group is known.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a non-uniform lattice in $SL(2, \mathbb R)$. In this paper, we study various $L^2$-norms of automorphic representations of $SL(2, \mathbb R)$. We bound these norms with intrinsic norms defined on the representation. Comparison of these norms will help us understand the growth of $L$-functions in a systematic way.

We study the scaling behavior of low-lying energy gaps for a restricted set of geometries, and find that even in this simplified case, it is impossible to predict the asymptotic behavior, with the data allowing equally good fits to exponential and power-law decays. We can therefore draw no conclusion as to the algorithmic complexity of a quantum adiabatic ground-state search for the system.

Abstract:In the present paper, we study an explicit effect of non-symmetry on asymptotics of the $n$-step transition probability as $n\rightarrow \infty$ for a class of non-symmetric random walks on the triangular lattice. Realizing the triangular lattice into $\mathbb{R}^2$ appropriately, we observe that the Euclidean distance in $\mathbb{R}^2$ naturally appears in the asymptotics. We characterize this realization from a geometric view point of Kotani-Sunada's standard realization of crystal lattices. As a corollary of the main theorem, we prove that the transition semigroup generated by the non-symmetric random walk approximates the heat semigroup generated by the usual Brownian motion on $\mathbb{R}^2$.

Hyperspatiality for isomorphisms of stabilized automorphism groups of shifts of finite type

Abstract:Given a homeomorphism $T \colon X \to X$ of a compact metric space $X$, the stabilized automorphism group $\textrm{Aut}^{\infty}(T)$ of the system $(X,T)$ is the group of self-homeomorphisms of $X$ which commute with some power of $T$. We study the question of spatiality for stabilized automorphism groups of shifts of finite type. We prove that any isomorphism $\Psi \colon \textrm{Aut}^{\infty}(\sigma_{m}) \to \textrm{Aut}^{\infty}(\sigma_{n})$ between stabilized automorphism groups of full shifts is spatially induced by a homeomorphism $\hat{\Psi}$ between respective stabilized spaces of chain recurrent subshifts. This spatialization in particular gives a bijection between the sets of periodic points which intertwines some powers of the shifts, and this bijection recovers the isomorphism at the level of the faithful actions on the sets of periodic points. We also prove that the outer automorphism group of $\textrm{Aut}^{\infty}(\sigma_{n})$ is uncountable, and deduce several other properties of $\textrm{Aut}^{\infty}(\sigma_{n})$ using the spatiality results.
