Abstract:It is shown that, in the non-relativistic limit, causal fermion systems give rise to an effective collapse theory. The nonlinear and stochastic correction terms to the Schrödinger equation are derived from the causal action principle. The dynamics of the statistical operator is described by a deterministic equation of Kossakowski-Lindblad form. Moreover, the quantum state undergoes a dynamical collapse compatible with the Born rule. The effective model has similarities with the continuous spontaneous localization model, but differs from it by a conservation law for the probability integral as well as a non-locality in time on a microscopic length scale $\ell_{\min}$.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the measurement problem in quantum theory, that is, how to reconcile the contradiction between the linear dynamics in quantum theory and the reduction of the state vector in the measurement process. Specifically, the authors propose a method to derive an effective collapse model of state - vector reduction starting from the basic physical theory of causal fermion systems. This method gives an effective collapse theory in the non - relativistic limit, in which the nonlinear and stochastic correction terms are derived from the causal action principle. These correction terms lead to nonlinear and stochastic corrections to the Schrödinger equation, thus explaining the wave - function - collapse phenomenon in the measurement process.
### Main contributions of the paper
1. **Starting from the basic theory**: The paper derives an effective collapse model from the causal action principle of causal fermion systems. This provides a new perspective for explaining the wave - function - collapse in the measurement process from first - principles.
2. **Nonlinear and stochastic corrections**: Through the causal action principle, the paper derives the nonlinear and stochastic correction terms of the Schrödinger equation. These correction terms lead to the dynamic collapse of the wave function, which is in line with the Born rule.
3. **Dynamics in the Kossakowski - Lindblad form**: The dynamics of the statistical operator is described as a deterministic equation in the Kossakowski - Lindblad form, which has certain similarities with the continuous spontaneous localization (CSL) model, but also has differences, especially in the conservation law of probability integration and non - locality in time.
4. **Microscopic derivation**: The paper details how to derive an effective collapse model from the microscopic structure of causal fermion systems in the non - relativistic limit, including the non - locality of the symmetric potential energy and the formal transformation of the Hamiltonian, etc.
### Formula summary
- **Non - local potential energy**:
\[
(V\psi)(t, \vec{x})=\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}dt'\int_{\mathbb{R}^3}d^{3}yV(t, \vec{x};t', \vec{y})\psi(t', \vec{y})
\]
where
\[
V(t, \vec{x};t', \vec{y})=\sum_{k,a}M_{k,a}(t, \vec{x};t', \vec{y})W_{k,a}\left(\frac{t + t'}{2}\right)
\]
\(M_{k,a}\) is a given kernel function, and \(W_{k,a}\) is a normalized Markovian Gaussian field.
- **Time evolution of the statistical operator**:
\[
\frac{d\sigma_t}{dt}=-i[H,\sigma_t]-\frac{1}{2}\sum_{\kappa}[K_{\kappa},[K_{\kappa},\sigma_t]]\left(1 + O\left(\frac{\ell_{\text{min}}\|V\|}{\hbar}\right)\right)
\]
where \(K_{\kappa}\) is a spatial operator formed by the kernel function \(M_{k,a}\).
- **Inner product of commutators**:
\[
\langle\psi|\phi\rangle_t=\int\psi^{\dagger}(t, \vec{x})\phi(t, \vec{x})d^{3}x + i\int_{-\infty}^{t}d\tau\int_{\mathbb{R}^3}d^{3}x\int_{t}^{\infty}d\tau'\int_{\mathbb{R}^3}d^{3}y\psi^{\dagger}(\tau, \vec{x})V(\tau, \vec{x};\tau', \vec{y})\phi(\tau', \vec{y})
\]
