Abstract:The packing chromatic number $\chi_{\rho}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest integer $c$ such that the vertex set $V(G)$ can be partitioned into sets $X_1, . . . , X_c$, with the condition that vertices in $X_i$ have pairwise distance greater than $i$. In this paper, we consider the packing chromatic number of several families of Sierpinski-type graphs. We establish the packing chromatic numbers of generalized Sierpinski graphs $S^n_G$ where $G$ is a path or a cycle (with exception of a cycle of length five) as well as a connected graph of order four. Furthermore, we prove that the packing chromatic number in the family of Sierpinski-triangle graphs $ST_4^n$ is bounded from above by 20.

Abstract:Let $G \otimes _f H$ denote the Sierpiński product of graphs $G$ and $H$ with respect to the function $f$. The Sierpiński general position number ${\rm gp}{_{\rm S}}(G,H)$ is introduced as the cardinality of a largest general position set in $G \otimes _f H$ over all possible functions $f$. Similarly, the lower Sierpiński general position number $\underline{\rm gp}{_{\rm S}}(G,H)$ is the corresponding smallest cardinality. The concept of vertex-colinear sets is introduced. Bounds for the general position number in terms of extremal vertex-colinear sets, and bounds for the (lower) Sierpiński general position number are proved. The extremal graphs are investigated. Formulas for the (lower) Sierpiński general position number of the \SP{s} with $K_2$ as the first factor are deduced. It is proved that if $m,n\geq 2$, then ${\rm gp}{_{\rm S}}(K_m,K_n) = m(n-1)$ and that if $n\ge 2m-2$, then $\underline{\rm gp}{_{\rm S}}(K_m,K_n) = m(n-m+1)$.

Abstract:In this paper we show that for integers s≥2, t≥1, any co-edge-regular graph which is cospectral with the s-clique extension of the t×t-grid is the s-clique extension of the t×t-grid, if t is large enough. Gavrilyuk and Koolen used a weaker version of this result to show that the Grassmann graph Jq(2D,D) is characterized by its intersection array as a distance-regular graph, if D is large enough.
Injective colorings of Sierpiński-like graphs and Kneser graphs

Abstract:Two relationships between the injective chromatic number and, respectively, chromatic number and chromatic index, are proved. They are applied to determine the injective chromatic number of Sierpiński graphs and to give a short proof that Sierpiński graphs are Class $1$. Sierpiński-like graphs are also considered, including generalized Sierpiński graphs over cycles and rooted products. It is proved that the injective chromatic number of a rooted product of two graphs lies in a set of six possible values. Sierpiński graphs and Kneser graphs $K(n,r)$ are considered with respect of being perfect injectively colorable, where a graph is perfect injectively colorable if it has an injective coloring in which every color class forms an open packing of largest cardinality. In particular, all Sierpiński graphs and Kneser graphs $K(n, r)$ with $n \ge 3r-1$ are perfect injectively colorable graph, while $K(7,3)$ is not.

Chromatic numbers of Cayley graphs of abelian groups: Cases of small dimension and rank

Abstract:A connected Cayley graph on an abelian group with a finite generating set $S$ can be represented by its Heuberger matrix, i.e., an integer matrix whose columns generate the group of relations between members of $S$. In a companion article, the authors lay the foundation for the use of Heuberger matrices to study chromatic numbers of abelian Cayley graphs. We call the number of rows in the Heuberger matrix the dimension, and the number of columns the rank. In this paper, we give precise numerical conditions that completely determine the chromatic number in all cases with dimension $1$; with rank $1$; and with dimension $\leq 3$ and rank $\leq 2$. For such a graph without loops, we show that it is $4$-colorable if and only if it does not contain a $5$-clique, and it is $3$-colorable if and only if it contains neither a diamond lanyard nor a $C_{13}(1,5)$, both of which we define herein. In a separate companion article, we show that we recover Zhu's theorem on the chromatic number of $6$-valent integer distance graphs as a special case of our theorem for dimension $3$ and rank $2$.

Discrete Math., 37 (2023) 917-924] determined $g_s(n,k).$ They remark that it is interesting to characterize the extremal graphs. In this paper, we give such a characterization.

Extensive studies on certain polynomials related to these topological indices have also been done recently. In a similar way, chromatic versions of certain topological indices and the related polynomials have also been discussed in the recent literature. In this paper, the chromatic version of the Schultz polynomial is introduced and determined this polynomial for certain fundamental graph classes.

Abstract:The general position problem for graphs was inspired by the no-three-in-line problem from discrete geometry. A set $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a \emph{general position set} if no shortest path in $G$ contains three or more vertices of $S$. The \emph{general position number} of $G$ is the number of vertices in a largest general position set. In this paper we investigate the general position numbers of the Mycielskian of graphs. We give tight upper and lower bounds on the general position number of the Mycielskian of a graph $G$ and investigate the structure of the graphs meeting these bounds. We determine this number exactly for common classes of graphs, including cubic graphs and a wide range of trees.

Chromatic numbers of Cayley graphs of abelian groups: A matrix method

Abstract:In this paper, we take a modest first step towards a systematic study of chromatic numbers of Cayley graphs on abelian groups. We lose little when we consider these graphs only when they are connected and of finite degree. As in the work of Heuberger and others, in such cases the graph can be represented by an $m\times r$ integer matrix, where we call $m$ the dimension and $r$ the rank. Adding or subtracting rows produces a graph homomorphism to a graph with a matrix of smaller dimension, thereby giving an upper bound on the chromatic number of the original graph. In this article we develop the foundations of this method. In a series of follow-up articles using this method, we completely determine the chromatic number in cases with small dimension and rank; prove a generalization of Zhu's theorem on the chromatic number of $6$-valent integer distance graphs; and provide an alternate proof of Payan's theorem that a cube-like graph cannot have chromatic number 3.

Distinguishing chromatic number of middle and subdivision graphs

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple finite connected graph of order $n$ greater than or equal to $3$. We obtain the following results: (1). We apply a result of Hamada and Yoshimura from 1976 and some recent results of Alikhani and Soltani (2020) and Kalinowski and Pilsniak (2015) to determine the distinguishing chromatic number of the middle graph $M(G)$ of the graph $G$. In particular, the distinguishing chromatic number $\chi_{D}(M(G))$ of the middle graph $M(G)$ of the graph $G$ is $\Delta(G)+1$ except for four small graphs $C_{4}, K_{4}, C_{6}$, and $K_{3,3}$, and $\Delta(G)+2$ otherwise. (2). In 2016, Kalinowski, Pilsniak, and Wozniak introduced the total distinguishing number $D''(G)$ of $G$. Inspired by a recent result of Mirafzal (2024), we show that the distinguishing number $D(S(G))$ of the subdivision graph $S(G)$ of $G$ is $D''(G)$. Consequently, $D(S(G))$ is at most $\lceil \sqrt{\Delta(G)}\rceil$. (3). We obtain a sharp upper bound for the distinguishing chromatic number of the subdivision graph $S(G)$ of $G$ in terms of the distinguishing number of $G$.

Abstract:The generalized Turán number $\ex(n,K_s,F)$ denotes the maximum number of copies of $K_s$ in an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph. Let $kF$ denote $k$ disjoint copies of $F$. Gerbner, Methuku and Vizer [DM, 2019, 3130-3141] gave a lower bound for $\ex(n,K_3,2C_5)$ and obtained the magnitude of $\ex(n, K_s, kK_r)$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $\ex(n,K_3,2C_5)$ and described the unique extremal graph for large $n$. Moreover, we also determine the exact value of $\ex(n,K_r,(k+1)K_r)$ which generalizes some known results.

Abstract:The packing chromatic number $\chi_{\rho}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that the vertex set of $G$ can be partitioned into sets $\Pi_1,\ldots,\Pi_k$, where $\Pi_i$, $i\in [k]$, is an $i$-packing. The following conjecture is posed and studied: if $G$ is a subcubic graph, then $\chi_{\rho}(S(G))\le 5$, where $S(G)$ is the subdivision of $G$. The conjecture is proved for all generalized prisms of cycles. To get this result it is proved that if $G$ is a generalized prism of a cycle, then $G$ is $(1,1,2,2)$-colorable if and only if $G$ is not the Petersen graph. The validity of the conjecture is further proved for graphs that can be obtained from generalized prisms in such a way that one of the two $n$-cycles in the edge set of a generalized prism is replaced by a union of cycles among which at most one is a 5-cycle. The packing chromatic number of graphs obtained by subdividing each of its edges a fixed number of times is also considered.
Subchromatic numbers of powers of graphs with excluded minors

Abstract:A $k$-subcolouring of a graph $G$ is a function $f:V(G) \to \{0,\ldots,k-1\}$ such that the set of vertices coloured $i$ induce a disjoint union of cliques. The subchromatic number, $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ admits a $k$-subcolouring. Nešetřil, Ossona de Mendez, Pilipczuk, and Zhu (2020), recently raised the problem of finding tight upper bounds for $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G^2)$ when $G$ is planar. We show that $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G^2)\le 43$ when $G$ is planar, improving their bound of 135. We give even better bounds when the planar graph $G$ has larger girth. Moreover, we show that $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G^{3})\le 95$, improving the previous bound of 364. For these we adapt some recent techniques of Almulhim and Kierstead (2022), while also extending the decompositions of triangulated planar graphs of Van den Heuvel, Ossona de Mendez, Quiroz, Rabinovich and Siebertz (2017), to planar graphs of arbitrary girth. Note that these decompositions are the precursors of the graph product structure theorem of planar graphs. We give improved bounds for $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G^p)$ for all $p$, whenever $G$ has bounded treewidth, bounded simple treewidth, bounded genus, or excludes a clique or biclique as a minor. For this we introduce a family of parameters which form a gradation between the strong and the weak colouring numbers. We give upper bounds for these parameters for graphs coming from such classes. Finally, we give a 2-approximation algorithm for the subchromatic number of graphs coming from any fixed class with bounded layered cliquewidth. In particular, this implies a 2-approximation algorithm for the subchromatic number of powers $G^p$ of graphs coming from any fixed class with bounded layered treewidth (such as the class of planar graphs). This algorithm works even if the power $p$ and the graph $G$ is unknown.

Abstract:The intersection numbers of moduli spaces of stable curves $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,m}$ are well-studied and are known to have rich combinatorial structure. We introduce a natural class of these intersection numbers $\omega_{G,g,m}$ indexed by finite simple graphs $G=(V,E)$. In genus zero, these numbers are closely related to several previously-studied quantities, including maximum likelihood degrees in algebraic statistics, counts of regions of certain hyperplane arrangements, and Kapranov degrees. We give two proofs of a simple closed formula $\omega_{G,g,m}=(-1)^{\left\lvert V \right\rvert}\chi_G(-(2g-2+m)),$ where $\chi_G$ is the chromatic polynomial of $G$ -- one proof via intersection theory on moduli spaces of stable curves, and the other using the theory of hyperplane arrangements. We discuss several related questions and speculations, including new candidates for the chromatic polynomial of a directed graph.

This paper studies circular coloring and a circular chromatic number of Type 1 and Type Cartesian products.
