Abstract:In this paper we deal with some finite-time control problems for discrete-time, time-varying linear systems. First we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for finite-time stability; these conditions require either the computation of the state transition matrix of the system or the solution of a certain difference Lyapunov inequality. Then we address the design problem. The proposed conditions allow us to find output feedback controllers which stabilize the closed loop system in the finite-time sense; all these conditions can be expressed in terms of LMIs and therefore are numerically tractable, as shown in the example included in the paper.

Abstract:This paper considers the problem of exact controllability of linear control systems with compact semigroup in non-reflexive state spaces and control spaces. The weak convergence of bounded sequence of control functions with respect to the subspace of the dual space is studied and a lemma for the weak convergence is proved. Based on the lemma and the strong separation theorem, a necessary and sufficient condition for exact controllability of compact semigroups with respect to the space consisting all essentially bounded measurable functions is obtained. An example of heat equation is presented to illustrate the utility of the result. Some related problems remaining for further study are addressed.

Abstract:The Bounded Real Lemma, i.e., the state-space linear matrix inequality characterization (referred to as Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov or KYP inequality) of when an input/state/output linear system satisfies a dissipation inequality, has recently been studied for infinite-dimensional discrete-time systems in a number of different settings: with or without stability assumptions, with or without controllability/observability assumptions, with or without strict inequalities. In these various settings, sometimes unbounded solutions of the KYP inequality are required while in other instances bounded solutions suffice. In a series of reports we show how these diverse results can be reconciled and unified. This first instalment focusses on the state-space-similarity approach to the bounded real lemma. We shall show how these results can be seen as corollaries of a new State-Space-Similarity theorem for infinite-dimensional linear systems.

Abstract:In this paper we consider finite-time control problems for linear systems subject to time-varying parametric uncertainties and to exogenous constant disturbances. The main result provided is a sufficient condition for robust finite-time stabilization via state feedback. It can be applied to problems with both non-zero initial conditions and unknown constant disturbances. This condition is then reduced to a feasibility problem involving linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). A detailed example is presented to illustrate the proposed methodology.

Abstract:Under-approximations of reachable sets and tubes have been receiving growing research attention due to their important roles in control synthesis and verification. Available under-approximation methods applicable to continuous-time linear systems typically assume the ability to compute transition matrices and their integrals exactly, which is not feasible in general, and/or suffer from high computational costs. In this note, we attempt to overcome these drawbacks for a class of linear time-invariant (LTI) systems, where we propose a novel method to under-approximate finite-time forward reachable sets and tubes, utilizing approximations of the matrix exponential and its integral. In particular, we consider the class of continuous-time LTI systems with an identity input matrix and initial and input values belonging to full dimensional sets that are affine transformations of closed unit balls. The proposed method yields computationally efficient under-approximations of reachable sets and tubes, when implemented using zonotopes, with first-order convergence guarantees in the sense of the Hausdorff distance. To illustrate its performance, we implement our approach in three numerical examples, where linear systems of dimensions ranging between 2 and 200 are considered.

Abstract:Identification of the parameters of stable linear dynamical systems is a well-studied problem in the literature, both in the low and high-dimensional settings. However, there are hardly any results for the unstable case, especially regarding finite time bounds. For this setting, classical results on least-squares estimation of the dynamics parameters are not applicable and therefore new concepts and technical approaches need to be developed to address the issue. Unstable linear systems arise in key real applications in control theory, econometrics, and finance. This study establishes finite time bounds for the identification error of the least-squares estimates for a fairly large class of heavy-tailed noise distributions, and transition matrices of such systems. The results relate the time length (samples) required for estimation to a function of the problem dimension and key characteristics of the true underlying transition matrix and the noise distribution. To establish them, appropriate concentration inequalities for random matrices and for sequences of martingale differences are leveraged.

Abstract:Data-driven control of discrete-time and continuous-time systems is of tremendous research interest. In this paper, we explore data-driven optimal control of continuous-time linear systems using input-output data. Based on a density result, we rigorously derive error bounds for finite-order polynomial approximations of elements of the system behavior. To this end, we leverage a link between latent variables and flat outputs of controllable systems. Combined with a continuous-time counterpart of the fundamental lemma by Willems et al., we characterize the suboptimality resulting from polynomial approximations in data-driven linear-quadratic optimal control problems. Finally, we draw upon a numerical example to illustrate our results.

Abstract:This paper considers the identification problem of the system parameters of discrete-time linear time-invariant(LTI) systems. Based on a limited number of input/output sample trajectories, under the condition of the total energy of input is limited and input can fully excite the state of the system, we give the fundamental identification limit of system parameters (up to a similarity transformation) for marginally stable single-input and single-output(SISO) systems by using Cramér-Rao bound, and we show that the identification of system parameters become more and more difficult as the system dimension increases.
Finite-time input-to-state stability for infinite-dimensional systems

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the notion of finite-time input-to-state stability (FTISS) for finite-dimensional systems to infinite-dimensional systems. More specifically, we first prove an FTISS Lyapunov theorem for a class of infinite-dimensional systems, namely, the existence of an FTISS Lyapunov functional (FTISS-LF) implies the FTISS of the system, and then, provide a sufficient condition for ensuring the existence of an FTISS-LF for a class of abstract infinite-dimensional systems under the framework of compact semigroup theory and Hilbert spaces. As an application of the FTISS Lyapunov theorem, we verify the FTISS for a class of parabolic PDEs involving sublinear terms and distributed in-domain disturbances. Since the nonlinear terms of the corresponding abstract system are not Lipschitz continuous, the well-posedness is proved based on the application of compact semigroup theory and the FTISS is assessed by using the Lyapunov method with the aid of an interpolation inequality. Numerical simulations are conducted to confirm the theoretical results.

Abstract:We consider a linear discrete time-invariant control system with linear time-varying state feedback. Our main goal is to determine what types of asymptotic dynamics are possible for this system. We introduce and investigate certain discrete-time analogs for notions of global attainability, global Lyapunov reducibility, and global assignability of Lyapunov invariants currently known in continuous-time case. We prove that uniform complete controllability of the open-loop system is necessary for uniform global non-singular attainability of the closed-loop system, and is sufficient if the coefficients of the open-loop system are time-invariant. From here we demonstrate that if a given discrete-time linear time-invariant system is completely controllable, then, by choosing a suitable time-varying feedback, it is possible to yield a dynamic equivalence between the closed-loop system and an arbitrary discrete time-varying linear system which has a Lyapunov sequence as its coefficient matrix.

Optimal Linear Filtering for Discrete-Time Systems with Infinite-Dimensional Measurements

Abstract:Systems equipped with modern sensing modalities such as vision and lidar gain access to increasingly high-dimensional measurements with which to enact estimation and control schemes. In this article, we examine the continuum limit of high-dimensional measurements and analyze state estimation in linear time-invariant systems with infinite-dimensional measurements but finite-dimensional states, both corrupted by additive noise. We propose a linear filter and derive the corresponding optimal gain functional in the sense of the minimum mean square error, analogous to the classic Kalman filter. By modeling the measurement noise as a wide-sense stationary random field, we are able to derive the optimal linear filter explicitly, in contrast to previous derivations of Kalman filters in distributed-parameter settings. Interestingly, we find that we need only impose conditions that are finite-dimensional in nature to ensure that the filter is asymptotically stable. The proposed filter is verified via simulation of a linearized system with a pinhole camera sensor.

Abstract:In the context of positive infinite-dimensional linear systems, we systematically study $L^p$-admissible control and observation operators with respect to the limit-cases $p=\infty$ and $p=1$, respectively. This requires an in-depth understanding of the order structure on the extrapolation space $X_{-1}$, which we provide. These properties of $X_{-1}$ also enable us to discuss when zero-class admissibility is automatic. While those limit-cases are the weakest form of admissibility on the $L^p$-scale, it is remarkable that they sometimes follow from order theoretic and geometric assumptions. Our assumptions on the geometries of the involved spaces are minimal.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problems of set-based finite-time stability (SFTS) and set-based finite-time boundedness (SFTB) for both certain and uncertain linear time-varying systems. The concepts of SFTS and SFTB are defined. Different from existing results, sufficient conditions for SFTS and SFTB are directly derived from the basic definitions of finite-time stability (FTS) and finite-time boundedness (FTB) by using the convex hull technique rather than utilizing the weighted quadratic functions. Thus, more practical constraints on the system states can be dealt with. Furthermore, intervals, zonotopes and polytopes are employed to describe the typical compact convex sets. For linear uncertain systems, the uncertain time-varying state sets are assumed to be represented by interval matrices and matrix zonotopes, respectively. Finally, numerical examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the main results.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the generalized Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov (KYP) lemma for 2-D Fornasini- Marchesini local state-space (FM LSS) systems. By carefully analyzing the feature of the states in 2-D FM LSS models, a linear matrix inequality (LMI) characterization for a rectangular finite frequency region is constructed and then by combining this characterization with S -procedure, a generalized KYP lemma is proposed for 2-D FM LSS models. As applications of the developed KYP lemma, new conditions are further derived for designing controllers guaranteeing finite frequency positive realness of the closed-loop systems where both state-feedback and dynamic output-feedback control laws are considered. Finally, two illustrative examples clearly show the effectiveness of the proposed results. The main contribution of the paper is trifold: 1) a novel characterization for a finite frequency region has been developed; 2) a generalized KYP lemma has been proposed, including the existing bounded realness and positive realness results as special cases; and 3) systematic methods for finite frequency positive real control of 2-D systems have been presented.

Abstract:In this paper, state space representation based approach to relative stability of Linear Time Invariant (LTI) systems is discussed. Specifically, given a bound on the output, relative Bounded Input-Bounded Output (BIBO) stability of LTI systems is discussed. The bound on dominant pole is first determined using input-output description of LTI system. Using state space representation of homogeneous (no external input) LTI system, the components of state vector are upper bound. The results are applied to Continuous Time Markov Chains (i.e. homogeneous stochastic linear systems). Finally, using state space representation of arbitrary (with external input) Linear Time Invariant systems, the location of dominant pole is bounded. Using the upper bound, the location of line (parallel to imaginary-axis jω and to the left of it) is utilized for determining relative stability.

Input-to-state stability is one of the most utilizable robust stability properties for nonlinear dynamical systems, while (nearly) fixed-time convergence is a kind of decay for trajectories of disturbance-free systems that is independent in initial conditions. The presence of both these features for a system can be checked by the existence of a proper Lyapunov function. The objective of this work is to provide the conditions for a converse result that (nearly) fixed-time input-to-state stable systems admit a respective Lyapunov function. Similar auxiliary results for uniform finite-time stability and uniform (nearly) fixed-time stability are obtained.

Abstract:Under some rank condition, a new version of bounded real lemma, which is expressed in terms of an admissible solution of a generalized discrete-time algebraic Riccati equation (GDARE) rather than inequality, is presented for linear discrete-time descriptor systems.
