Abstract:For every large enough $n$, we explicitly construct a body of constant width $2$ that has volume less than $0.9^n \text{Vol}(\mathbb{B}^{n}$), where $\mathbb{B}^{n}$ is the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. This answers a question of O.~Schramm.

Abstract:For every $n\ge 2$, we construct a body $U_n$ of constant width $2$ in $\mathbb{E}^n$ with small volume and symmetries of a regular $n$-simplex. $U_2$ is the Reuleaux triangle. To the best of our knowledge, $U_3$ was not previously constructed, and its volume is smaller than the volume of other three-dimensional bodies of constant width with tetrahedral symmetries. While the volume of $U_3$ is slightly larger than the volume of Meissner's bodies of width $2$, it exceeds the latter by less than $0.137\%$. For all large $n$, the volume of $U_n$ is smaller than the volume of the ball of radius $0.891$.

Abstract:We show that there exist convex bodies of constant width in with illumination number at least , answering a question by Kalai. Furthermore, we prove the existence of finite sets of diameter 1 in which cannot be covered by balls of diameter 1, improving a result of Bourgain and Lindenstrauss.

Abstract:In the recent paper "On a formula for sets of constant width in 2D, Comm. Pure Appl. Anal. 18 (2019), 2117–2131", we gave a constructive formula for all 2d sets of constant width. Based on this result we derive here a formula for the parametrization of the boundary of bodies of constant width in 3 dimensions, with the formula depending on one function defined on . Each such function gives a minimal value and for all one finds a body of constant width 2 r . Moreover, we show that all bodies of constant width in 3d have such a parametrization. The last result needs a tool that we describe as 'shadow domain' and which is explained in an appendix. The construction is explicit and offers a parametrization different from the one given by T. Bayen, T. Lachand-Robert and É. Oudet in "Analytic parametrization of three-dimensional bodies of constant width. Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 186 (2007), 225–249".

Abstract:Motivated from Gaussian processes, we derive the intrinsic volumes of the infinite-dimensional Brownian motion body . The method is by discretization to a class of orthoschemes. Numerical support is offered for a conjecture of Sangwine-Yager, and another conjecture is offered on the rate of decay of intrinsic volume sequences.

A probabilistic approach to Lorentz balls

Abstract:We develop a probabilistic approach to study the volumetric and geometric properties of unit balls $\mathbb B_{q,1}^n$ of finite-dimensional Lorentz sequences spaces $\ell_{q,1}^n$. More precisely, we show that the empirical distribution of a random vector $X^{(n)}$ uniformly distributed on the volume normalized Lorentz ball in $\mathbb R^n$ converges weakly to a compactly supported symmetric probability distribution with explicitly given density; as a consequence we obtain a weak Poincaré-Maxwell-Borel principle for any fixed number $k\in\mathbb N$ of coordinates of $X^{(n)}$ as $n\to\infty$. Moreover, we prove a central limit theorem for the largest coordinate of $X^{(n)}$, demonstrating a quite different behavior than in the case of the $\ell_q^n$ balls, where a Gumbel distribution appears in the limit. Last but not least, we prove a Schechtman-Schmuckenschläger type result for the asymptotic volume of intersections of volume normalized Lorentz and $\ell^n_p$ balls.

Abstract:We prove asymptotic estimates for the volume of families of Orlicz balls in high dimensions. As an application, we describe a large family of Orlicz balls which verify a famous conjecture of Kannan, Lov{á}sz and Simonovits about spectral gaps. We also study the asymptotic independence of coordinates on uniform random vectors on Orlicz balls, as well as integrability properties of their linear functionals.

Abstract:For every hyperplane $H$ supporting a convex body $C$ in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^d$ we define the width of $C$ determined by $H$ as the distance between $H$ and a most distant ultraparallel hyperplane supporting $C$. We prove that if $\width_H (C) = \Delta (C)$ and if there exists a unique most distant point $j \in C$ from $H$, then the projection of $j$ onto $H$ belongs to $H \cap C$. We verify that the diameter of $C$ equals to the maximum width of $C$. We define bodies of constant width in $\mathbb{H}^d$ in the standard way as bodies whose all widths are equal. We show that every body of constant width is strictly convex. The minimum width of $C$ over all supporting $H$ is called the thickness $\Delta (C)$ of $C$. A convex body $R \subset \mathbb{H}^d$ is said to be reduced if $\Delta (Z) < \Delta (R)$ for every convex body $Z$ properly contained in $R$. We show that regular tetrahedra in $\mathbb{H}^3$ are not reduced. Similarly as in the Euclidean and spherical spaces, we introduce complete bodies and bodies of constant diameter in $\mathbb{H}^d$. We show that every body of constant width $\delta$ is a body of constant diameter $\delta$ and a complete body of diameter $\delta$. Moreover, the two last conditions are equivalent.

Abstract:Recently, Arman, Bondarenko, and Prymak constructed a constant width body in $\mathbb{R}^n$ whose illumination number is exponential in $n$. In this note, we improve their bound by generalizing the construction. In particular, we construct a constant width body in $\mathbb{R}^n$ whose illumination number is at least $(\tau+o(1))^n$, where $\tau\approx 1.047$.

On unbalanced difference bodies and Godbersen's conjecture

Abstract:The longstanding Godbersen's conjecture states that for any convex body $K \subset \mathbb R^n$ of volume $1$ and any $j \in \{0, \ldots, n\}$, the mixed volume $V_j = V(K[j], -K[n - j])$ is bounded by $\binom{n}{j}$, with equality if and only if $K$ is a simplex. We demonstrate that several consequences of this conjecture are true: certain families of linear combinations of the $V_j$, arising from different geometric constructions, are bounded above by their values when one substitutes $\binom{n}{j}$ for $V_j$, with equality if and only if $K$ is a simplex. One of our results implies that for any $K$ of volume $1$ we have $\frac{1}{n + 1} \sum_{j = 0}^n \binom{n}{j}^{-1} V_j \le 1$, showing that Godbersen's conjecture holds ``on average'' for any body. Another result generalizes the well-known Rogers-Shephard inequality for the difference body.

Abstract:The intersection body of a ball is again a ball. So, the unit ball $B_d \subset \R^d$ is a fixed point of the intersection body operator acting on the space of all star-shaped origin symmetric bodies endowed with the Banach-Mazur distance.We show that this fixed point is a local attractor, i.e., that the iterations of the intersection body operator applied to any star-shaped origin symmetric body sufficiently close to $B_d$ in Banach-Mazur distance converge to $B_d$ in Banach-Mazur distance. In particular, it follows that the intersection body operator has no other fixed or periodic points in a small neighborhood of $B_d$.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to describe a new $3$-dimensional family of bodies of constant width that we have called peabodies, obtained from the Reuleaux tetrahedron by replacing a small neighborhood of all six edges with sections of an envelope of spheres. This family contains, in particular, the two Meissner solids and a body with tetrahedral symmetry that we have called Robert's body. Behind the construction of this family lies the classical notion of confocal quadrics discussed, for example, by Hilbert in his famous book. We study confocal quadrics and prove that the distances of an alternating sequence of four points in two confocal quadrics always satisfies a simple equation and use this equation to prove that our bodies have constant width.

Volumes of Subvarieties of Complex Ball Quotients and Sparsity of Rational Points

Abstract:Let $X=\Gamma \backslash \mathbb{B}^{n} $ be an $n$-dimensional complex ball quotient by a torsion-free non-uniform lattice $\Gamma$ whose parabolic subgroups are unipotent. We prove that the volumes of subvarieties of $X$ are controlled by the systole of $X,$ which is the length of the shortest closed geodesic of $X$. There are a number of arithmetic and geometric consequences: the systole of $X$ controls the growth rate of rational points on $X,$ uniformly in the field of definition. Also, we obtain effective global generation and very ampleness results for multiples of the canonical bundle $K_{\overline{X}},$ where $\overline{X}$ is the toroidal compactification of $X.$ These results follow from the bound we find for the Seshadri constant of $K_{\overline{X}}$ in terms of the systole.

Hadwiger's problem for bodies with enough sub-Gaussian marginals

Abstract:Hadwiger's conjecture in convex geometry, formulated in 1957, states that every convex body in $\mathbb{R}^n$ can be covered by $2^n$ translations of its interior. Despite significant efforts, the best known bound related to this problem was $\mathcal{O}(4^n \sqrt{n} \log n)$ for more than sixty years. In 2021, Huang, Slomka, Tkocz, and Vritsiou made a major breakthrough by improving the estimate by a factor of $\exp\left(\Omega(\sqrt{n})\right)$. Further, for $\psi_2$ bodies they proved that at most $\exp(-\Omega(n))\cdot4^n$ translations of its interior are needed to cover it. Through a probabilistic approach we show that the bound $\exp(-\Omega(n))\cdot4^n$ can be obtained for convex bodies with sufficiently many well-behaved sub-gaussian marginals. Using a small diameter approximation, we present how the currently best known bound for the general case, due to Campos, Van Hintum, Morris, and Tiba can also be deduced from our results.

Abstract:It was shown by B. Allen, R. Perales, and C. Sormani that on a closed manifold where the diameter of a sequence of Riemannian metrics is bounded, if the volume converges to the volume of a limit manifold, and the sequence of Riemannian metrics are $C^0$ converging from below then one can conclude volume preserving Sormani-Wenger Intrinsic Flat convergence. The result was extended to manifolds with boundary by B. Allen and R. Perales by a doubling with necks procedure which produced a closed manifold and reduced the case with boundary to the case without boundary. The consequence of the doubling with necks procedure was requiring a stronger condition than necessary on the boundary. Using the estimates for the Sormani-Wenger Intrinsic Flat distance on manifolds with boundary developed by B. Allen and R. Perales, we show that only a bound on the area of the boundary is needed in order to conclude volume preserving intrinsic flat convergence for manifolds with boundary. We also provide an example which shows that one should not expect convergence without a bound on area.
