Abstract:In the Heisenberg group H^n, we prove quantitative isoperimetric inequalities for Pansu's spheres, that are known to be isoperimetric under various assumptions. The inequalities are shown for suitably restricted classes of competing sets and the proof relies on the construction of sub-calibrations.

Abstract:We consider capillarity functionals which measure the perimeter of sets contained in a Euclidean half-space assigning a constant weight to the portion of the boundary that touches the boundary of the half-space. Depending on , sets that minimize this capillarity perimeter among those with fixed volume are known to be suitable truncated balls lying on the boundary of the half-space. We first give a new proof based on an ABP-type technique of the sharp isoperimetric inequality for this class of capillarity problems. Next we prove two quantitative versions of the inequality: a first sharp inequality estimates the Fraenkel asymmetry of a competitor with respect to the optimal bubbles in terms of the energy deficit; a second inequality estimates a notion of asymmetry for the part of the boundary of a competitor that touches the boundary of the half-space in terms of the energy deficit. After a symmetrization procedure, the quantitative inequalities follow from a novel combination of a quantitative ABP method with a selection-type argument.

Abstract:We prove the sharp isoperimetric inequality $$ \mathbb{E} \,h_{A}^{\log_{2}(3/2)} \geq \mu(A)^{*} (\log_{2}(1/\mu(A)^{*}))^{\log_{2}(3/2)} $$ for all sets $A \subseteq \{0,1\}^n$, where $\mu$ denotes the uniform probability measure, $\mu(A)^{*}=\min\{\mu(A), 1-\mu(A)\}$, $h_A$ is supported on $A$ and to each vertex $x$ assigns the number of neighbour vertices in the complement of $A$. The inequality becomes equality for any subcube. Moreover, we provide lower bounds on $\mathbb{E} h_{A}^{\beta}$ in terms of $\mu(A)$ for all $\beta \in [1/2,1]$, improving, and in some cases tightening, previously known results. In particular, we obtain the sharp inequality $\mathbb{E}h_{A}^{0.53}\geq 2 \mu(A)(1-\mu(A))$ for all sets with $\mu(A)\geq 1/2$, which allows us to refine a recent result of Kahn and Park on isoperimetric inequalities about partitioning the hypercube. Furthermore, we derive Talagrand's isoperimetric inequalities for functions with values in a Banach space having finite cotype: for all $f :\{-1,1\}^{n} \to X$, $\|f\|_{\infty}\leq 1$, and any $p \in [1,2]$ we have $$ \|Df\|_{p} \gtrsim \frac{1}{q^{3/2}C_{q}(X)} \|f\|_{2}^{2/p}\left(\log \frac{e\|f\|_{2}}{\|f\|_{1}}\right)^{1/q}, $$ where $\| Df\|_{p}^{p} = \mathbb{E} \| \sum_{1\leq j \leq n} x'_{j} D_{j} f(x)\|^{p}$, $x'$ is independent copy of $x$, and $C_{q}(X)$ is the cotype $q$ constant of $X$. Different proofs of the recently resolved Talagrand's conjecture will be presented.

Abstract:The Pál inequality is a classical result which asserts that among all planar convex sets of given width the equilateral triangle is the one of minimal area. In this paper we prove three quantitative versions of this inequality, by quantifying how the closeness of the area of a convex set, of certain width, to the minimal value implies its closeness to the equilateral triangle. As a by-product, we also present a novel result concerning a quantitative inequality for the inradius of a set, under minimal width constraint.

Abstract:By using optimal transport theory, we prove a sharp dimension-free isoperimetric inequality involving the volume entropy, in metric measure spaces with non-negative Ricci curvature in the sense of Lott--Sturm--Villani. We show that this isoperimetric inequality is attained by a non-trivial open set, if and only if the space satisfies a certain foliation property. For metric measure spaces with non-negative Riemannian Ricci curvature, we show that the sharp Cheeger constant is achieved by a non-trivial measurable set, if and only if a one-dimensional space is split off. Our isoperimetric inequality and the rigidity theorems are proved in non-smooth framework, but new even in the smooth setting. In particular, our results provide some new understanding of logarithmically concave measures.

Abstract:This paper studies sharp isoperimetric comparison theorems and sharp dimensional concavity properties of the isoperimetric profile for non smooth spaces with lower Ricci curvature bounds, the so-called $N$-dimensional ${\rm RCD}(K,N)$ spaces $(X,\mathsf{d},\mathscr{H}^N)$. The absence of most of the classical tools of Geometric Measure Theory and the possible non existence of isoperimetric regions on non compact spaces are handled via an original argument to estimate first and second variation of the area for isoperimetric sets, avoiding any regularity theory, in combination with an asymptotic mass decomposition result of perimeter-minimizing sequences. Most of our statements are new even for smooth, non compact manifolds with lower Ricci curvature bounds and for Alexandrov spaces with lower sectional curvature bounds. They generalize several results known for compact manifolds, non compact manifolds with uniformly bounded geometry at infinity, and Euclidean convex bodies.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the isoperimetric inequality for the anisotropic Gaussian measure and characterize the cases of equality. We also find an example that shows Ehrhard symmetrization fails to decrease for the anisotropic Gaussian perimeter and gives a new inequality that includes an error term. This new inequality, in particular, gives us a hint to prove a uniqueness result for the anisotropic Ehrhard symmetrization.

Abstract:The ABP method for proving isoperimetric inequalities has been first employed by Cabr\'e in $\mathbb{R}^n$, then developed by Brendle, notably in the context of non-compact Riemannian manifolds of non-negative Ricci curvature and positive asymptotic volume ratio. In this paper, we expand upon their approach and prove isoperimetric inequalities (sharp in the limit) in the presence of a small amount of negative curvature. First, we consider smallness of the negative part $\mathrm{Ric}_-$ of the Ricci curvature in terms of its elliptic Kato constant. Indeed, the Kato constant turns out to control the non-negativity of the ($\infty$-)Bakry-\'Emery Ricci-tensor of a suitable conformal deformation of the manifold, and the ABP method can be implemented in this setting. Secondly, we show that the smallness of the Kato constant is implied by a suitable polynomial decay of $\mathrm{Ric}_-$, provided that the asymptotic volume ratio is positive. To show this latter fact, we enhance techniques elaborated by Li-Tam and Kasue to obtain new estimates of the Green function valid on the whole manifold.

Sharp Cheeger-Buser Type Inequalities in RCD ( K , ∞ ) Spaces

Abstract:The goal of the paper is to sharpen and generalise bounds involving Cheeger's isoperimetric constant h and the first eigenvalue λ 1 of the Laplacian. A celebrated lower bound of λ 1 in terms of h, λ 1 ≥ h 2 / 4 , was proved by Cheeger in 1970 for smooth Riemannian manifolds. An upper bound on λ 1 in terms of h was established by Buser in 1982 (with dimensional constants) and improved (to a dimension-free estimate) by Ledoux in 2004 for smooth Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below. The goal of the paper is twofold. First: we sharpen the inequalities obtained by Buser and Ledoux obtaining a dimension-free sharp Buser inequality for spaces with (Bakry-Émery weighted) Ricci curvature bounded below by K ∈ R (the inequality is sharp for K > 0 as equality is obtained on the Gaussian space). Second: all of our results hold in the higher generality of (possibly non-smooth) metric measure spaces with Ricci curvature bounded below in synthetic sense, the so-called RCD ( K , ∞ ) spaces.

Abstract:We are interested in finding sharp bounds for the Cheeger constant $h$ via different geometrical quantities, namely the area $|\cdot|$, the perimeter $P$, the inradius $r$, the circumradius $R$, the minimal width $\omega$ and the diameter $d$. We provide new sharp inequalities between these quantities for planar convex bodies and enounce new conjectures based on numerical simulations. In particular, we completely solve the Blaschke-Santal\'o diagrams describing all the possible inequalities involving the triplets $(P,h,r)$, $(d,h,r)$ and $(R,h,r)$ and describe some parts of the boundaries of the diagrams of the triplets $(\omega,h,d)$, $(\omega,h,R)$, $(\omega,h,P)$, $(\omega,h,|\cdot|)$, $(R,h,d)$ and $(\omega,h,r)$.

Abstract:On a convex bounded open set, we prove that Poincaré-Sobolev constants for functions vanishing at the boundary can be bounded from below in terms of the norm of the distance function in a suitable Lebesgue space. This generalizes a result shown, in the planar case, by E. Makai, for the torsional rigidity. In addition, we compare the sharp Makai constants obtained in the class of convex sets with the optimal constants defined in other classes of open sets. Finally, an alternative proof of the Hersch-Protter inequality for convex sets is given.

Abstract:We show a sharp and rigid spectral generalization of the classical Bishop-Gromov volume comparison theorem: if a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimension $n\geqslant 3$ satisfies \[ \lambda_1\left(-\frac{n-1}{n-2}\Delta+\mathrm{Ric}\right)\geqslant n-1,\] then $\operatorname{vol}(M)\leqslant \operatorname{vol}(\mathbb S^{n})$, and $\pi_1(M)$ is finite. Moreover, the constant $\frac{n-1}{n-2}$ cannot be improved, and if $\operatorname{vol}(M)=\operatorname{vol}(\mathbb S^n)$ holds, then $M\cong \mathbb S^{n}$. A sharp generalization of the Bonnet-Myers theorem is also shown under the same spectral condition. The proofs involve the use of a new unequally weighted isoperimetric problem, and unequally warped $\mu$-bubbles. As an application, in dimensions $3\leqslant n\leqslant 5$, we infer sharp results on the isoperimetric structure at infinity of complete manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and uniformly positive spectral biRicci curvature.

Abstract:In this paper we present new versions of the classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality for different classes of measures and sets. We show that the inequality \[ \mu(\lambda A + (1-\lambda)B)^{1/n} \geq \lambda \mu(A)^{1/n} + (1-\lambda)\mu(B)^{1/n} \] holds true for an unconditional product measure $\mu$ with decreasing density and a pair of unconditional convex bodies $A,B \subset \mathbb{R}^n$. We also show that the above inequality is true for any unconditional $\log$-concave measure $\mu$ and unconditional convex bodies $A,B \subset \mathbb{R}^n$. Finally, we prove that the inequality is true for a symmetric $\log$-concave measure $\mu$ and a pair of symmetric convex sets $A,B \subset \mathbb{R}^2$, which, in particular, settles two-dimensional case of the conjecture for Gaussian measure proposed by R. Gardner and the fourth named author. In addition, we deduce the $1/n$-concavity of the parallel volume $t \mapsto \mu(A+tB)$, Brunn's type theorem and certain analogues of Minkowski first inequality.

Abstract:We give a partial negative answer to a question left open in a previous work by Brasco and the first and third-named authors concerning the sharp constant in the fractional Hardy inequality on convex sets. Our approach has a geometrical flavor and equivalently reformulates the sharp constant in the limit case $p=1$ as the Cheeger constant for the fractional perimeter and the Lebesgue measure with a suitable weight. As a by-product, we obtain new lower bounds on the sharp constant in the $1$-dimensional case, even for non-convex sets, some of which optimal in the case $p=1$.

Abstract:We prove a sharp isoperimetric inequality for measured Finsler manifolds having non-negative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth. We also prove a rigidity result for this inequality, under the additional hypotheses of boundedness of the isoperimetric set and the finite reversibility of the space. As a consequence, we deduce the rigidity of the weighted anisotropic isoperimetric inequality for cones in the Euclidean space, in the irreversible setting.

Abstract:This work is concerned with a Pólya-Szegö type inequality for anisotropic functionals of Sobolev functions. The relevant inequality entails a double-symmetrization involving both trial functions and functionals. A new approach that uncovers geometric aspects of the inequality is proposed. It relies upon anisotropic isoperimetric inequalities, fine properties of Sobolev functions, and results from the Brunn-Minkowski theory of convex bodies. Importantly, unlike previously available proofs, the one offered in this paper does not require approximation arguments and hence allows for a characterization of extremal functions.

Abstract:We provide sharp bounds for the isoperimetric constants of infinite plane graphs (tessellations) with bounded vertex and face degrees. For example, if $G$ is a plane graph satisfying the inequalities $p_1 \leq \mbox{deg}\ v \leq p_2$ for $v \in V(G)$ and $q_1 \leq \mbox{deg}\ f \leq q_2$ for $f \in F(G)$, where $p_1, p_2, q_1$, and $q_2$ are natural numbers such that $1/p_i + 1/q_i \leq 1/2$, $i=1,2$, then we show that \[ \Phi (p_1, q_1) \leq \inf_S \frac{|\partial S|}{|V(S)|} \leq \Phi (p_2, q_2), \] where the infimum is taken over all finite nonempty subgraphs $S \subset G$, $\partial S$ is the set of edges connecting $S$ to $G \setminus S$, and $\Phi(p,q)$ is defined by \[ \Phi (p, q) = (p-2) \sqrt{1 - \frac{4}{(p-2)(q-2)}}. \] For $p_1=3$ this gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture by Lawrencenko, Plummer, and Zha from 2002, and for general $p_i$ and $q_i$ our result fully resolves a question posed in the book by Lyons and Peres from 2016, where they extended the conjecture of Lawrencenko et al. to the above form.

Abstract:The sharp isoperimetric inequality for non-compact Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth has been obtained in increasing generality with different approaches in a number of contributions [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1812.05022" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1812.05022">arXiv:1812.05022</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2012.09490" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2012.09490">arXiv:2012.09490</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2009.13717" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2009.13717">arXiv:2009.13717</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2103.08496" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2103.08496">arXiv:2103.08496</a>] culminated by Balogh and Kristaly [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2012.11862" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2012.11862">arXiv:2012.11862</a>] covering also m.m.s.'s verifying the non-negative Ricci curvature condition in the synthetic sense of Lott, Sturm and Villani. In sharp contrast with the compact case of positive Ricci curvature, for a large class of spaces including weighted Riemannian manifolds, no complete characterisation of the equality cases is present in the literature. The scope of this note is to settle this problem by proving, in the same generality of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2012.11862" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2012.11862">arXiv:2012.11862</a>], that the equality in the isoperimetric inequality can be attained only by metric balls. Whenever this happens the space is forced, in a measure theoretic sense, to be a cone. Our result applies to different frameworks yielding as corollaries new rigidity results: it extend to weighted Riemannian manifold the rigidity results of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2009.13717" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2009.13717">arXiv:2009.13717</a>], it extend to general $\mathsf{RCD}$ spaces the rigidity results of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2201.04916" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2201.04916">arXiv:2201.04916</a>] and finally applies also to the Euclidean setting by proving that that optimisers in the anisotropic and weighted isoperimetric inequality for Euclidean cones are necessarily the Wulff shapes.
