Abstract:We consider the multiple Dirichlet series associated to the $k$th moment of real Dirichlet $L$-functions, and prove that it has a meromorphic continuation to a specific region in $\mathbb{C}^{k+1}$, which is conditional under the generalized Lindelöf hypothesis for $k\geq 5$.

Moments of Artin-Schreier L-functions

Abstract:We compute moments of $L$-functions associated to the polynomial family of Artin--Schreier covers over $\mathbb{F}_q$, where $q$ is a power of a prime $p>2$, when the size of the finite field is fixed and the genus of the family goes to infinity. More specifically, we compute the $k^{\text{th}}$ moment for a large range of values of $k$, depending on the sizes of $p$ and $q$. We also compute the second moment in absolute value of the polynomial family, obtaining an exact formula with a lower order term, and confirming the unitary symmetry type of the family.

Moments and non-vanishing of $L$-functions over thin subgroups

Abstract:We obtain an asymptotic formula for all moments of Dirichlet $L$-functions $L(1,\chi)$ modulo $p$ when averaged over a subgroup of characters $\chi$ of size $(p-1)/d$ with $\varphi(d)=o(\log p)$. Assuming the infinitude of Mersenne primes, the range of our result is optimal and improves and generalises the previous result of S. Louboutin and M. Munsch (2022) for second moments. We also use our ideas to get an asymptotic formula for the second moment of $L(1/2,\chi)$ over subgroups of characters of similar size. This leads to non-vanishing results in this family where the proportion obtained depends on the height of the smallest rational number lying in the dual group. Additionally, we prove that, in both cases, we can take much smaller subgroups for almost all primes $p$. Our method relies on pointwise and average estimates on small solutions of linear congruences which in turn leads us to use and modify some results for product sets of Farey fractions.

Among other things we obtain an asymptotic expansion of wide moments of Dirichlet $L$-functions (with arbitrary twists) extending results of Heath-Brown. We also give applications to non-vanishing.

Abstract: Dirichlet's $L$-functions are natural extensions of the Riemann zeta function. In this paper we first give a brief survey of Ap\'ery-like series for some special values of the zeta function and certain $L$-functions. Then, we establish two theorems on transformations of certain kinds of congruences. Motivated by the results and based on our computation, we pose 48 new conjectural series (most of which involve harmonic numbers) for such special values and related constants. For example, we conjecture that \begin{align*}\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac1{k^4\binom{2k}k}\bigg(\frac1k+\sum_{j=k}^{2k}\frac1j\bigg)=&\frac{11}9\zeta(5), \\\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac{(-1)^{k-1}}{k^3\binom{2k}k}\bigg(\frac1{5k^3}+\sum_{j=1}^{k}\frac1{j^3}\bigg)=&\frac{2}5\zeta(3)^2, \end{align*} and $$\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac{48^k}{k(2k-1)\binom{4k}{2k}\binom{2k}k}=\frac{15}2\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac{(\frac k3)}{k^2},$$ where $(\frac k3)$ denotes the Legendre symbol.
Applications of Moments of Dirichlet Coefficients in Elliptic Curve Families

Abstract:The moments of the coefficients of elliptic curve L-functions are related to numerous arithmetic problems. Rosen and Silverman proved a conjecture of Nagao relating the first moment of one-parameter families satisfying Tate's conjecture to the rank of the corresponding elliptic surface over Q(T); one can also construct families of moderate rank by finding families with large first moments. Michel proved that if j(T) is not constant, then the second moment of the family is of size p^2 + O(p^(3/2)); these two moments show that for suitably small support the behavior of zeros near the central point agree with that of eigenvalues from random matrix ensembles, with the higher moments impacting the rate of convergence. In his thesis, Miller noticed a negative bias in the second moment of every one-parameter family of elliptic curves over the rationals whose second moment had a calculable closed-form expression, specifically the first lower order term which does not average to zero is on average negative. This Bias Conjecture is confirmed for many families; however, these are highly non-generic families whose resulting Legendre sums can be determined. Inspired by the recent successes by Yang-Hui He, Kyu-Hwan Lee, Thomas Oliver, Alexey Pozdnyakov and others in investigations of murmurations of elliptic curve coefficients with machine learning techniques, we pose a similar problem for trying to understand the Bias Conjecture. As a start to this program, we numerically investigate the Bias Conjecture for a family whose bias is positive for half the primes. Since the numerics do not offer conclusive evidence that negative bias for the other half is enough to overwhelm the positive bias, the Bias Conjecture cannot be verified for the family.

Abstract:We prove an asymptotic formula for the second moment of the $\mathrm{GL}(n)\times\mathrm{GL}(n+1)$ Rankin--Selberg central $L$-values $L(1/2,\Pi\otimes\pi)$, where $\pi$ is a fixed cuspidal representation of $\mathrm{GL}(n)$ that is tempered and unramified at every place, while $\Pi$ varies over a family of automorphic representations of $\mathrm{PGL}(n+1)$ ordered by (archimedean or non-archimedean) conductor. As another application of our method, we prove the existence of infinitely many cuspidal representations $\Pi$ of $\mathrm{PGL}(n+1)$ such that $L(1/2,\Pi\otimes\pi_1)$ and $L(1/2,\Pi\otimes\pi_2)$ do not vanish simultaneously where $\pi_1$ and $\pi_2$ are cuspidal representations of $\mathrm{GL}(n)$ that are unramified and tempered at every place and have trivial central characters.

Abstract:In 1970, Huxley obtained a sharp upper bound for the sixth moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions at the central point, averaged over primitive characters $\chi$ modulo $q$ and all moduli $q \leq Q$. In 2007, as an application of their ``asymptotic large sieve'', Conrey, Iwaniec and Soundararajan showed that when an additional short $t$-averaging is introduced into the problem, an asymptotic can be obtained. In this paper we show that this extraneous averaging can be removed, and we thus obtain an asymptotic for the original moment problem considered by Huxley. The main new difficulty in our work is the appearance of certain challenging ``unbalanced'' sums that arise as soon as the $t$-aspect averaging is removed.

Abstract:In this article we consider questions related to the behavior of the moments $M_{m}\left( \left\{ z_{j}\right\} \right) $ when the indices are restricted to specific subsequences of integers, such as the even or odd moments. If $n\geq2$ we introduce the notion of symmetrical series of order $n,$ showing that if $\left\{ z_{j}\right\} \ $is symmetrical then $M_{m}\left( \left\{ z_{j}\right\} \right) =0$ whenever $n\nmid m;$ in particular, the odd moments of a symmetrical series of order $2$ vanish. We prove that when $\left\{ z_{j}\right\} \in l^{p}$ for some $p$ then several results characterizing the sequence from its moments hold. We show, in particular, that if $M_{m}\left( \left\{ z_{j}\right\} \right) =0$ whenever $n\nmid m$ then $\left\{ z_{j}\right\} $ is a rearrangement of a symmetrical series of order $n.$ We then construct examples of sequences whose moments vanish with required density. Lastly, we construct counterexamples of several of the results valid in the $l^{p}$ case if we allow the moment series to be all conditionally convergent. We show that for each arbitrary sequence of real numbers $\left\{ \mu _{m}\right\} _{m=0}^{\infty}$ there are real sequences $\left\{ u_{j}\right\} _{j=0}^{\infty}$ such that \[ \sum_{j=0}^{\infty}u_{j}^{2m+1}=\mu_{m}\,,\ \ \ m\geq0\,. \]

Abstract:In recent years L-functions and their analytic properties have assumed a central role in number theory and automorphic forms. In this expository article, we describe the two major methods for proving the analytic continuation and functional equations of $L$-functions: the method of integral representations, and the method of Fourier expansions of Eisenstein series. Special attention is paid to technical properties, such as boundedness in vertical strips; these are essential in applying the converse theorem, a powerful tool that uses analytic properties of L-functions to establish cases of Langlands functoriality conjectures. We conclude by describing striking recent results which rest upon the analytic properties of L-functions.

Abstract:Assume that the generalized Ramanujan conjecture holds on the automorphic $L$-function $L(s, \pi)$ on $GL_d$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with $d\geq 3$, we can obtain a small log-saving non-trivial bound on the second integral moment of $L(1/2+it, \pi)$. Specifically the bound \[ \int_{T}^{2T}\Big|L(\frac{1}{2}+it, \pi)\Big|^2 d t\ll_{\pi} \frac{T^{\frac{d}{2}}}{\log^{\eta_d}T} \] holds for a small constant $\eta_d>0$. As an application, we give a new asymptotic formula for the average of the coefficient $\lambda_{1\boxplus \pi}(n)$.

Abstract:In this article, we study the density conjecture of Katz and Sarnak for $L$-functions of adélic Hilbert modular forms and their convolutions. In particular, under the generalised Riemann hypothesis, we establish several instances supporting the conjecture and extending the works of Iwaniec-Luo-Sarnak and many others. For applications, we obtain an upper bound for the average order of $L$-functions of Hilbert modular forms at $s=\frac{1}{2}$ as well as a positive proportion of non-vanishing of certain Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions.
