Abstract:We establish new metric characterizations for the norm (respectively, ultraweak) closure of the convex hull of a bounded set in an arbitrary $C^*$-algebra (respectively, von Neumann algebra), and provide applications of these results to the majorization theory.

Abstract:Using Godement mean on the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of a locally compact quantum group we obtain strong separation results for quantum positive-definite functions associated to a subclass of representations, strengthening for example the known relationship between amenability of a discrete quantum group and existence of a net of finitely supported quantum positive-definite functions converging pointwise to $I$. We apply these results to show that von Neumann algebras of unimodular discrete quantum groups enjoy a strong form of non-$w^*$-CPAP, which we call the matrix $\epsilon$-separation property.

A note on nonseparable Lipschitz-free spaces

Abstract:We prove that several classical Banach space properties are equivalent to separability for the class of Lipschitz-free spaces, including Corson's property ($\mathcal{C}$), Talponen's Countable Separation Property, or being a Gâteaux differentiability space. On the other hand, we single out more general properties where this equivalence fails. In particular, the question whether the duals of non-separable Lipschitz-free spaces have a weak$^*$ sequentially compact ball is undecidable in ZFC. Finally, we provide an example of a nonseparable dual Lipschitz-free space that fails the Radon-Nikodým property.

Nonlinear Strict Cone Separation Theorems in Real Normed Spaces

Abstract:In this paper, we derive some new results for the separation of two not necessarily convex cones by a (convex) cone / conical surface in real (reflexive) normed spaces. In essence, we follow the nonlinear and nonsymmetric separation approach developed by Kasimbeyli (2010, SIAM J. Optim. 20), which is based on augmented dual cones and Bishop-Phelps type (normlinear) separating functions. Compared to Kasimbeyli's separation theorem, we formulate our theorems for the separation of two cones under weaker conditions (concerning convexity and closedness requirements) with respect to the involved cones. By a new characterization of the algebraic interior of augmented dual cones in real normed spaces, we are able to establish relationships between our cone separation results and the results derived by Kasimbeyli (2010, SIAM J. Optim. 20) and by Garcia-Castano, Melguizo-Padial and Parzanese (2023, Math. Meth. Oper. Res. 97).

On the weak$^*$ separability of the space of Lipschitz functions

Abstract:We conjecture that whenever $M$ is a metric space of density at most continuum, then the space of Lipschitz functions is $w^*$-separable. We prove the conjecture for several classes of metric spaces including all the Banach spaces with a projectional skeleton, Banach spaces with a $w^*$-separable dual unit ball and locally separable complete metric spaces.

Abstract:We give a new proof of a characterization of the closeness of the range of a continuous linear operator and of the closeness of the sum of two closed vector subspaces of a Banach space. Then we state sufficient conditions for the closeness of the sum of two closed subspaces of the Banach space of bounded functions and apply this result on various pseudo almost periodic spaces and pseudo almost automorphic spaces.

Abstract:The Berezin range of a bounded operator $T$ acting on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is the set $B(T)$ := $\{\langle T\hat{k}_{x},\hat{k}_{x} \rangle_{\mathcal{H}} : x \in X\}$, where $\hat{k}_{x}$ is the normalized reproducing kernel for $\mathcal{H}$ at $x \in X$. In general, the Berezin range of an operator is not convex. Primarily, we focus on characterizing the convexity of the Berezin range for a class of composition operators acting on the Fock space on $\mathbb{C}$ and the Dirichlet space of the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$. We prove an analogue of the elliptic range theorem for the unitarily equivalent Berezin range of an operator on a two-dimensional reproducing kernel Hilbert space and characterize the convexity of the unitarily equivalent Berezin range for a bounded operator $T$ on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$.

Abstract:For a $n\times n$ unitary matrix $u=e^z$ with $z$ skew-Hermitian, the angles of $u$ are the arguments of its spectrum, i.e. the spectrum of $-iz$. For $1\le m\le n$, we show that $s_m(t)$, the sum of the first $m$ angles of the path $t\mapsto e^{tx}e^y$ of unitary matrices, is a convex function of $t$ (provided the path stays in a vecinity of the identity matrix). This vecinity is described in terms of the opertor norm of matrices, and it is optimal. We show that the when all the maps $t\mapsto s_m(t)$ are linear, then $x$ commutes with $y$. Several application to unitarily invariant norms in the unitary group are given. Then we extend these applications to $Ad$-invariant Finsler norms in the special unitary group of matrices. This last result is obtained by proving that any $Ad$-invariant Finsler norm in a compact semi-simple Lie group $K$ is the supremum of a family of what we call orbit norms, induced by the Killing form of $K$.

Abstract:Let $ X $ and $ Y $ be Banach spaces. We provide the representation of the dual space of compact operators $ K(X, Y) $ as a subspace of bounded linear operators $ \mathcal{L}(X, Y) $. The main results are: (1) If $ Y $ is separable, then the dual forms of $ K(X, Y) $ can be represented by the integral operator and the elements of $ C[0, 1] $. (2) If $ X^{**} $ has the weak Radon-Nikodym property, then the dual forms of $ K(X, Y) $ can be represented by the trace of some tensor products.

Abstract:In this work, we introduce a very wide category of open sets in topological spaces, called $ \aleph $-open sets. We study the category of $ \aleph $-open sets that contains $ \beta $-open sets in addition to $ \beta^{\ast} $-open and $ e^{\ast} $-open sets. We present the essential properties of this class and disclose its relationships with many different classes of open sets with the help of concrete counterexamples. In addition, we introduce the $ \aleph $-interior and $ \aleph $-closure operators. Moreover, we study the concept of $ \aleph $-continuity of functions inspired by the classes of $ \aleph $-open and $ \aleph $-closed sets. Also, we discuss some kinds of separation axioms and some theorems related to the graph of functions.

Abstract:It is proved that for every compact metric space $K$ there exists a Banach space $X$ whose Calkin algebra $\mathcal{L}(X)/\mathcal{K}(X)$ is homomorphically isometric to $C(K)$. This is achieved by appropriately modifying the Bourgain-Delbaen $\mathscr{L}_\infty$-space of Argyros and Haydon in such a manner that sufficiently many diagonal operators on this space are bounded.

Abstract:Let $ \mathbb{B}(\mathscr{H})$ represent the $C^*$-algebra, which consists of all bounded linear operators on $\mathscr{H},$ and let $N ( .) $ be a norm on $ \mathbb{B}(\mathscr{H})$. We define a norm $w_{(N,e)} (. , . )$ on $ \mathbb{B}^2(\mathscr{H})$ by $$ w_{(N,e)}(B,C)=\underset{|\lambda_1|^2+\lambda_2|^2\leq1}\sup \underset{\theta\in\mathbb{R}}\sup N\left(\Re \left(e^{i\theta}(\lambda_1B+\lambda_2C)\right)\right),$$ for every $B,C\in\mathbb{B}(\mathscr{H})$ and $\lambda_1,\lambda_2\in\mathbb{C}.$ We investigate basic properties of this norm and prove some bounds involving it. In particular, when $N( .)$ is the Hilbert-Schmidt norm, we prove some Hilbert-Schmidt Euclidean operator radius inequalities for a pair of bounded linear operators.

Abstract:We prove an extrapolation of compactness theorem for operators on Banach function spaces satisfying certain convexity and concavity conditions. In particular, we show that the boundedness of an operator T in the weighted Lebesgue scale and the compactness of T in the unweighted Lebesgue scale yields compactness of T on a very general class of Banach function spaces. As our main new tool, we prove various characterizations of the boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator on such spaces and their associate spaces, using a novel sparse self-improvement technique. We apply our main results to prove compactness of the commutators of singular integral operators and pointwise multiplication by functions of vanishing mean oscillation on, for example, weighted variable Lebesgue spaces.

Regularity results for classes of Hilbert C*-modules with respect to special bounded modular functionals

Abstract:Considering the deeper reasons of the appearance of a remarkable counterexample by J.~Kaad and M.~Skeide [17] we consider situations in which two Hilbert C*-modules $M \subset N$ with $M^\bot = \{ 0 \}$ over a fixed C*-algebra $A$ of coefficients cannot be separated by a non-trivial bounded $A$-linear functional $r_0: N \to A$ vanishing on $M$. In other words, the uniqueness of extensions of the zero functional from $M$ to $N$ is focussed. We show this uniqueness of extension for any such pairs of Hilbert C*-modules over W*-algebras, over monotone complete C*-algebras and over compact C*-algebras. Moreover, uniqueness of extension takes place also for any one-sided maximal modular ideal of any C*-algebra. Such a non-zero separating bounded $A$-linear functional $r_0$ exist for a given pair of full Hilbert C*-modules $M \subseteq N$ over a given C*-algebra $A$ iff there exists a bounded $A$-linear non-adjointable operator $T_0: N \to N$ such that the kernel of $T_0$ is not biorthogonally closed w.r.t. $N$ and contains $M$. This is a new perspective on properties of bounded modular operators that might appear in Hilbert C*-module theory. By the way, we find a correct proof of [13, Lemma 2.4] in the case of monotone complete and compact C*-algebras, but not in the general C*-case.

Separating diameter two properties from their weak-star counterparts in spaces of Lipschitz functions

Abstract:We address some open problems concerning Banach spaces of real-valued Lipschitz functions. Specifically, we prove that the diameter two properties differ from their weak-star counterparts in these spaces. In particular, we establish the existence of dual Banach spaces lacking the symmetric strong diameter two property but possessing its weak-star counterpart. We show that there exists an octahedral Lipschitz-free space whose bidual is not octahedral. Furthermore, we prove that the Banach space of real-valued Lipschitz functions from any infinite subset of $\ell_1$ possesses the symmetric strong diameter two property. These results are achieved by introducing new sufficient conditions, providing new examples and clarifying the status of known ones.

Abstract:For a {bounded} non-negative self-adjoint operator acting in a complex, infinite-dimensional, separable Hilbert space H and possessing a dense range R we propose a new approach to characterisation of phenomenon concerning the existence of subspaces M\subset H such that M\capR=M^\perp\capR=\{0\}. We show how the existence of such subspaces leads to various {pathological} properties of {unbounded} self-adjoint operators related to von Neumann theorems \cite{Neumann}--\cite{Neumann2}. We revise the von Neumann-Van Daele-Schmüdgen assertions \cite{Neumann}, \cite{Daele}, \cite{schmud} to refine them. We also develop {a new systematic approach, which allows to construct for any {unbounded} densely defined symmetric/self-adjoint operator T infinitely many pairs of its closed densely defined restrictions T_k\subset T such that \dom(T^* T_{k})=\{0\} (\Rightarrow \dom T_{k}^2=\{0\}$) k=1,2 and \dom T_1\cap\dom T_2=\{0\}, \dom T_1\dot+\dom T_2=\dom T.

Abstract:Given two unital C*-algebras $A$ and $B$, we study, when it exists, the universal unital $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{U}(A,B)$ generated by the coefficients of a unital $*$-homomorphism $\rho\,:\, A\rightarrow B\otimes\mathcal{U}(A,B)$. When $B$ is finite dimensional, it is well known that $\mathcal{U}(A,B)$ exists and we study in this case properties LP, RFD, primitiveness and the UCT as well as $K$-theory. We also construct a reduced version of $\mathcal{U}(A,B)$ for which we study exactness, nuclearity, simplicity, absence of non-trivial projection and $K$-theory. Then, we consider the von Neumann algebra generated by the reduced version and study factoriality, amenability, fullness, primeness, absence of Cartan, Connes' invariants, Haagerup property and Connes' embeddability. Next, we consider the case when $B$ is infinite dimensional: we show that for any non-trivial separable unital $C^*$-algebra $A$, $\mathcal{U}(A,B)$ exists if and only if $B$ is finite dimensional. Nevertheless, we show that there exists a unique unital locally $C^*$-algebra generated by the coefficients of a unital continuous $*$-homomorphism $\rho\,:\, A\rightarrow B\otimes\mathcal{U}(A,B)$. Finally, we study a natural quantum semigroup structure on $\mathcal{U}(A,A)$.
