Abstract:We consider the edge-reinforced random walk with multiple (but finitely many) walkers which influence the edge weights together. The walker which moves at a given time step is chosen uniformly at random, or according to a fixed order. First, we consider 2 walkers with linear reinforcement on a line graph comprising three nodes. We show that the edge weights evolve similarly to the setting with a single walker which corresponds to a Pólya urn. In particular, the left edge weight proportion is a martingale at certain stopping times, showing that a (random) limiting proportion exists. We then look at an arbitrary number of walkers on Z with very general reinforcement. We show that in this case, the behaviour is also the same as for a single walker: either all walkers are recurrent or all walkers have finite range. In the particular case of reinforcements of "sequence type", we give a criterion for recurrence.

Abstract:We review results on linearly edge-reinforced random walks. On finite graphs, the process has the same distribution as a mixture of reversible Markov chains. This has applications in Bayesian statistics and it has been used in studying the random walk on infinite graphs. On trees, one has a representation as a random walk in an independent random environment. We review recent results for the random walk on ladders: recurrence, a representation as a random walk in a random environment, and estimates for the position of the random walker.

Abstract:Random walks are a useful tool to describe and study various dynamical processes on networks. For some particular problems, it is more suitable to formulate them by biased random walks based on the properties of edges, for example, weight and importance. However, in some situations it is not easy to directly observe weight information of a network. In this paper, we show how to extract weight information of edges only from the topological knowledge of a binary network, based on which we develop a framework for biased random walks on the binary network. To this end, we first propose a centrality measure for edges based on line graph. We then present novel biased random walks on a binary network, called edge centrality based random walks (ECBRW), where the walker prefers to jump along edges with high centrality. Furthermore, we develop a series of techniques to derive analytical expressions for relevant quantities of ECBRW, including stationary distribution and hitting times. Finally, we study ECBRW on m-ary trees, Barabasi-Albert networks and some real networks. We find that the behavior for stationary distribution and hitting times for ECBRW on these networks differs significantly from those for unbiased random walks on corresponding networks.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new simple but powerful general technique for the study of edge- and vertex-reinforced processes with super-linear reinforcement, based on the use of order statistics for the number of edge, respectively of vertex, traversals. The technique relies on upper bound estimates for the number of edge traversals, proved in a different context by Cotar and Limic [Ann. Appl. Probab. (2009)] for finite graphs with edge reinforcement. We apply our new method both to edge- and to vertex-reinforced random walks with super-linear reinforcement on arbitrary infinite connected graphs of bounded degree. We stress that, unlike all previous results for processes with super-linear reinforcement, we make no other assumption on the graphs. For edge-reinforced random walks, we complete the results of Limic and Tarrès [Ann. Probab. (2007)] and we settle a conjecture of Sellke [Technical Report 94-26, Purdue University (1994)] by showing that for any reciprocally summable reinforcement weight function w, the walk traverses a random attracting edge at all large times. For vertex-reinforced random walks, we extend results previously obtained on Z by Volkov [Ann. Probab. (2001)] and by Basdevant, Schapira and Singh [Ann. Probab. (2014)], and on complete graphs by Benaim, Raimond and Schapira [ALEA (2013)]. We show that on any infinite connected graph of bounded degree, with reinforcement weight function w taken from a general class of reciprocally summable reinforcement weight functions, the walk traverses two random neighbouring attracting vertices at all large times.

Abstract:We consider three classes of random graphs: edge random graphs, vertex random graphs, and vertex-edge random graphs. Edge random graphs are Erdos-Renyi random graphs, vertex random graphs are generalizations of geometric random graphs, and vertex-edge random graphs generalize both. The names of these three types of random graphs describe where the randomness in the models lies: in the edges, in the vertices, or in both. We show that vertex-edge random graphs, ostensibly the most general of the three models, can be approximated arbitrarily closely by vertex random graphs, but that the two categories are distinct.

Variations on Reinforced Random Walks

Abstract:This thesis examines edge-reinforced random walks with some modifications to the standard definition. An overview of known results relating to the standard model is given and the proof of recurrence for the standard linearly edge-reinforced random walk on bounded degree graphs with small initial edge weights is repeated. Then, the edge-reinforced random walk with multiple walkers influencing each other is considered. The following new results are shown: on a segment of three nodes, the edge weights resemble a Pólya urn and the fraction of the edge weights divided by the total weight forms a converging martingale. On Z, the behavior is the same as for a single walker - either all walkers have finite range or all walkers are recurrent. Finally, edge-reinforced random walks with a bias in a certain direction are analysed, in particular on Z. It is shown that the bias can introduce a phase transition between recurrence and transience, depending on the strength of the bias, thus fundamentally altering the behavior in comparison to the standard linearly reinforced random walk.

Abstract:Given a discrete random walk on a finite graph $G$, the vacant set and vacant net are, respectively, the sets of vertices and edges which remain unvisited by the walk at a given step $t$.%These sets induce subgraphs of the underlying graph. Let $\Gamma(t)$ be the subgraph of $G$ induced by the vacant set of the walk at step $t$. Similarly, let $\widehat \Gamma(t)$ be the subgraph of $G$ induced by the edges of the vacant net. For random $r$-regular graphs $G_r$, it was previously established that for a simple random walk, the graph $\Gamma(t)$ of the vacant set undergoes a phase transition in the sense of the phase transition on Erd\H{os}-Renyi graphs $G_{n,p}$. Thus, for $r \ge 3$ there is an explicit value $t^*=t^*(r)$ of the walk, such that for $t\leq (1-\epsilon)t^*$, $\Gamma(t)$ has a unique giant component, plus components of size $O(\log n)$, whereas for $t\geq (1+\epsilon)t^*$ all the components of $\Gamma(t)$ are of size $O(\log n)$. We establish the threshold value $\widehat t$ for a phase transition in the graph $\widehat \Gamma(t)$ of the vacant net of a simple random walk on a random $r$-regular graph. We obtain the corresponding threshold results for the vacant set and vacant net of two modified random walks. These are a non-backtracking random walk, and, for $r$ even, a random walk which chooses unvisited edges whenever available. This allows a direct comparison of thresholds between simple and modified walks on random $r$-regular graphs. The main findings are the following: As $r$ increases the threshold for the vacant set converges to $n \log r$ in all three walks. For the vacant net, the threshold converges to $rn/2 \; \log n$ for both the simple random walk and non-backtracking random walk. When $r\ge 4$ is even, the threshold for the vacant net of the unvisited edge process converges to $rn/2$, which is also the vertex cover time of the process.

Abstract:Consider a simple symmetric random walk on the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}$. Let $E(n)$ denote a favorite edge of the random walk at time $n$. In this paper, we study the escape rate of $E(n)$, and show that almost surely $\liminf_{n\to\infty}\frac{|E(n)|}{\sqrt{n}\cdot(\log n)^{-\gamma}}$ equals 0 if $\gamma\le 1$, and is infinity otherwise. We also obtain a law of the iterated logarithm for $E(n)$.

Abstract:Suppose that the vertices of the Euclidean lattice Z^d are endowed with a random scenery, obtained by tossing a fair coin at each vertex. A random walker, starting from the origin, replaces the coins along its path by i.i.d. biased coins. For which walks and dimensions can the resulting scenery be distinguished from the original scenery? We find the answer for simple random walk, where it does not depend on dimension, and for walks with a nonzero mean, where a transition occurs between dimensions three and four. We also answer this question for other types of graphs and walks, and raise several new questions.

Abstract:We propose and investigate a unifying class of sparse random graph models, based on a hidden coloring of edge-vertex incidences, extending an existing approach, random graphs with a given degree distribution, in a way that admits a nontrivial correlation structure in the resulting graphs. The approach unifies a number of existing random graph ensembles within a common general formalism, and allows for the analytic calculation of observable graph characteristics. In particular, generating function techniques are used to derive the size distribution of connected components (clusters) as well as the location of the percolation threshold where a giant component appears.

Abstract:A weighted coloured-edge graph is a graph for which each edge is assigned both a positive weight and a discrete colour, and can be used to model transportation and computer networks in which there are multiple transportation modes. In such a graph paths are compared by their total weight in each colour, resulting in a Pareto set of minimal paths from one vertex to another. This paper will give a tight upper bound on the cardinality of a minimal set of paths for any weighted coloured-edge graph. Additionally, a bound is presented on the expected number of minimal paths in weighted bicoloured-edge graphs.

A Theory for Coloring Walks in a Digraph

Abstract:Consider edge colorings of digraphs where edges $v_1 v_2$ and $v_2 v_3$ have different colors. This coloring induces a vertex coloring by sets of edge colors, in which edge $v_1 v_2$ in the graph implies that the set color of $v_1$ contains an element not in the set color of $v_2$, and conversely. We generalize to colorings of $k$(vertex)-walks, defined so two walks have different colors if one is the prefix $c_1$ and the other is the suffix $c_2$ of a common $(k+1)$-walk. Further, the colors can belong to a poset $P$ where $c_1$, $c_2$ must satisfy $c_1 \not\leq c_2$. This set construction generalizes the lower order ideal in $P$ from a set of $k$-walk colors; these order ideals are partially ordered by containment. We conclude that a $P$ coloring of $k$-walks exists iff there is a vertex coloring by $A$ iterated $k-1$ times on $P$, where Birkhoff's $A$ maps a poset to its poset of lower order ideals. Thus the directed chromatic index problem is generalized and reduced to poset coloring of vertices. This work uses ideas, results and motivations due to Cole and Vishkin on deterministic coin tossing and Becker and Simon on vertex covers for subsets of $(n-2)$-cubes.

Abstract:Lock step walker model is a one-dimensional integer lattice walker model in discrete time. Suppose that initially there are infinitely many walkers on the non-negative even integer sites. At each tick of time, each walker moves either to its left or to its right with equal probability. The only constraint is that no two walkers can occupy the same site at the same time. It is proved that in the large time limit, a certain conditional probability of the displacement of the leftmost walker is identical to the limiting distribution of the properly scaled largest eigenvalue of a random GOE matrix (GOE Tracy-Widom distribution). The proof is based on the bijection between path configurations and semistandard Young tableaux established recently by Guttmann, Owczarek and Viennot. Statistics of semistandard Young tableaux is analyzed using the Hankel determinant expression for the probability from the work of Rains and the author. The asymptotics of the Hankel determinant is obtained by applying the Deift-Zhou steepest-descent method to the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the related orthogonal polynomials.

Random graphs from a weighted minor-closed class

Abstract:There has been much recent interest in random graphs sampled uniformly from the n-vertex graphs in a suitable minor-closed class, such as the class of all planar graphs. Here we use combinatorial and probabilistic methods to investigate a more general model. We consider random graphs from a `well-behaved' class of graphs: examples of such classes include all minor-closed classes of graphs with 2-connected excluded minors (such as forests, series-parallel graphs and planar graphs), the class of graphs embeddable on any given surface, and the class of graphs with at most k vertex-disjoint cycles. Also, we give weights to edges and components to specify probabilities, so that our random graphs correspond to the random cluster model, appropriately conditioned. We find that earlier results extend naturally in both directions, to general well-behaved classes of graphs, and to the weighted framework, for example results concerning the probability of a random graph being connected; and we also give results on the 2-core which are new even for the uniform (unweighted) case.

Abstract:A finite ergodic Markov chain exhibits cutoff if its distance to equilibrium remains close to its initial value over a certain number of iterations and then abruptly drops to near 0 on a much shorter time scale. Originally discovered in the context of card shuffling (Aldous and Diaconis in Am Math Mon 93:333–348, 1986), this remarkable phenomenon is now rigorously established for many reversible chains. Here we consider the non-reversible case of random walks on sparse directed graphs, for which even the equilibrium measure is far from being understood. We work under the configuration model, allowing both the in-degrees and the out-degrees to be freely specified. We establish the cutoff phenomenon, determine its precise window and prove that the cutoff profile approaches a universal shape. We also provide a detailed description of the equilibrium measure.

Abstract:We consider a recently introduced model of color-avoiding percolation defined as follows. Every edge in a graph $G$ is colored in some of $k\ge 2$ colors. Two vertices $u$ and $v$ in $G$ are said to be CA-connected if $u$ and $v$ may be connected using any subset of $k-1$ colors. CA-connectivity defines an equivalence relation on the vertex set of $G$ whose classes are called CA-components. We study the component structure of a randomly colored Erdős-Rényi random graph of constant average degree. We distinguish three regimes for the size of the largest component: a supercritical regime, a so-called intermediate regime, and a subcritical regime, in which the largest CA-component has respectively linear, logarithmic, and bounded size. Interestingly, in the subcritical regime, the bound is deterministic and given by the number of colors.

Uniformly Random Colourings of Sparse Graphs

Abstract:We analyse uniformly random proper $k$-colourings of sparse graphs with maximum degree $\Delta$ in the regime $\Delta < k\ln k $. This regime corresponds to the lower side of the shattering threshold for random graph colouring, a paradigmatic example of the shattering threshold for random Constraint Satisfaction Problems. We prove a variety of results about the solution space geometry of colourings of fixed graphs, generalising work of Achlioptas, Coja-Oghlan, and Molloy on random graphs, and justifying the performance of stochastic local search algorithms in this regime. Our central proof relies only on elementary techniques, namely the first-moment method and a quantitative induction, yet it strengthens list-colouring results due to Vu, and more recently Davies, Kang, P., and Sereni, and generalises state-of-the-art bounds from Ramsey theory in the context of sparse graphs. It further yields an approximately tight lower bound on the number of colourings, also known as the partition function of the Potts model, with implications for efficient approximate counting.

Abstract:We study a variation of the graph coloring problem on random graphs of finite average connectivity. Given the number of colors, we aim to maximize the number of different colors at neighboring vertices (i.e., one edge distance) of any vertex. Two efficient algorithms, belief propagation and Walksat, are adapted to carry out this task. We present experimental results based on two types of random graphs for different system sizes and identify the critical value of the connectivity for the algorithms to find a perfect solution. The problem and the suggested algorithms have practical relevance since various applications, such as distributed storage, can be mapped onto this problem.
