Abstract:Integration is the final key step when turning an infinitesimal argument into a result applicable to quantities of finite size. Conceptually, it is about combining infinitesimal contributions to a finite whole. We make a first step towards a geometric theory of integration in the context of Synthetic Differential Geometry (SDG) by analysing the differential aspect of the integration process. Starting from two heuristic principles that combine the idea of differential forms as infinitesimal measures while formalising the process of taking infinitesimal differences at the same time we derive a general notion of differential form as an equivariant map from infinitesimal $n$-cuboids to the base ring coordinatising a line. Besides the familiar differential forms introduced by Cartan we discover two new types. We also discover a new differential operator besides the exterior derivative. Analogous to the relationship between the exterior derivative and the Stokes-Cartan integral theorem, this new operator is linked to the generalised Fundamental Theorem of Calculus in higher dimensions, as discussed in prior research. This shows that the Fundamental Theorem is an integral theorem like Stokes-Cartan, but for one of the new types of differential forms.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of rough paths on embedded submanifolds and demonstrate that this class of rough paths is natural. On the way, we develop a notion of rough integration and an efficient and intrinsic theory of rough differential equations (RDEs) on manifolds. The theory of RDEs is then used to construct parallel translation along manifold‐valued rough paths. Finally, this framework is used to show that there is a one‐to‐one correspondence between rough paths on a d‐dimensional manifold and rough paths on d‐dimensional Euclidean space. This last result is a rough path analogue of Cartan's development map and its stochastic version which was developed by Eells and Elworthy and Malliavin.

Abstract:We introduce a natural geometric framework for the study of logarithmically divergent integrals on manifolds with corners and algebraic varieties, using the techniques of logarithmic geometry. Key to the construction is a new notion of morphism in logarithmic geometry itself, introduced by Howell, which allows us to interpret the ubiquitous rule of thumb ``$\lim_{\epsilon\to 0} \log \epsilon := 0$'' as the restriction to a submanifold. Via a version of de Rham's theorem with logarithmic divergences, we obtain a functorial characterization of the classical theory of ``regularized integration'': it is the unique way to extend the ordinary integral to the logarithmically divergent context while respecting the basic laws of calculus (change of variables, Fubini's theorem, and Stokes' formula.)

A Transfer Principle for Branched Rough Paths

Abstract:A branched rough path $X$ consists of a rough integral calculus for $X \colon [0, T] \to \mathbb R^d$ which may fail to satisfy integration by parts. Using Kelly's bracket extension [Kel12], we define a notion of pushforward of branched rough paths through smooth maps, which leads naturally to a definition of branched rough path on a smooth manifold. Once a covariant derivative is fixed, we are able to give a canonical, coordinate-free definition of integral against such rough paths. After characterising quasi-geometric rough paths in terms of their bracket extension, we use the same framework to define manifold-valued rough differential equations (RDEs) driven by quasi-geometric rough paths. These results extend previous work on $3 > p$-rough paths [ABCRF22], itself a generalisation of the Ito calculus on manifolds developed by Meyer and Emery [Mey81, E89, E90], to the setting of non-geometric rough calculus of arbitrarily low regularity.

Abstract:For conformal geometries of Riemannian signature, we provide a comprehensive and explicit treatment of the core local theory for embedded submanifolds of arbitrary dimension. This is based in the conformal tractor calculus and includes a conformally invariant Gauss formula leading to conformal versions of the Gauss, Codazzi, and Ricci equations. It provides the tools for proliferating submanifold conformal invariants, as well for extending to conformally singular Riemannian manifolds the notions of mean curvature and of minimal and CMC submanifolds. A notion of distinguished submanifold is defined by asking the tractor second fundamental form to vanish. We show that for the case of curves this exactly characterises conformal geodesics (a.k.a. conformal circles) while for hypersurfaces it is the totally umbilic condition. So, for other codimensions, this unifying notion interpolates between these extremes, and we prove that in all dimensions this coincides with the submanifold being weakly conformally circular, meaning that ambient conformal circles remain in the submanifold. Stronger notions of conformal circularity are then characterised similarly. Next we provide a very general theory and construction of quantities that are necessarily conserved along distinguished submanifolds. This first integral theory thus vastly generalises the results available for conformal circles in [56]. We prove that any normal solution to an equation from the class of first BGG equations can yield such a conserved quantity, and show that it is easy to provide explicit formulae for these. Finally we prove that the property of being distinguished is also captured by a type of moving incidence relation. This second characterisation is used to show that, for suitable solutions of conformal Killing-Yano equations, a certain zero locus of the solution is necessarily a distinguished submanifold.

Abstract:Abstract We study the geometric Whitney problem on how a Riemannian manifold ( M , g ) can be constructed to approximate a metric space $$(X,d_X)$$ ( X , d X ) . This problem is closely related to manifold interpolation (or manifold reconstruction) where a smooth n -dimensional submanifold $$S\subset {{\mathbb {R}}}^m$$ S ⊂ R m , $$m>n$$ m > n needs to be constructed to approximate a point cloud in $${{\mathbb {R}}}^m$$ R m . These questions are encountered in differential geometry, machine learning, and in many inverse problems encountered in applications. The determination of a Riemannian manifold includes the construction of its topology, differentiable structure, and metric. We give constructive solutions to the above problems. Moreover, we characterize the metric spaces that can be approximated, by Riemannian manifolds with bounded geometry: We give sufficient conditions to ensure that a metric space can be approximated, in the Gromov–Hausdorff or quasi-isometric sense, by a Riemannian manifold of a fixed dimension and with bounded diameter, sectional curvature, and injectivity radius. Also, we show that similar conditions, with modified values of parameters, are necessary. As an application of the main results, we give a new characterization of Alexandrov spaces with two-sided curvature bounds. Moreover, we characterize the subsets of Euclidean spaces that can be approximated in the Hausdorff metric by submanifolds of a fixed dimension and with bounded principal curvatures and normal injectivity radius. We develop algorithmic procedures that solve the geometric Whitney problem for a metric space and the manifold reconstruction problem in Euclidean space, and estimate the computational complexity of these procedures. The above interpolation problems are also studied for unbounded metric sets and manifolds. The results for Riemannian manifolds are based on a generalization of the Whitney embedding construction where approximative coordinate charts are embedded in $${{\mathbb {R}}}^m$$ R m and interpolated to a smooth submanifold.

Abstract:Submanifolds in space forms satisfy the well-known DDVV inequality. A submanifold attaining equality in this inequality pointwise is called a Wintgen ideal submanifold. As conformal invariant objects, Wintgen ideal submanifolds are investigated in this paper using the framework of M?bius geometry. We classify Wintgen ideal submanfiolds of dimension m≥3 and arbitrary codimension when a canonically defined 2-dimensional distribution ?2 is integrable. Such examples come from cones, cylinders, or rotational submanifolds over super-minimal surfaces in spheres, Euclidean spaces, or hyperbolic spaces, respectively. We conjecture that if ?2 generates a k-dimensional integrable distribution ?kand k<m, then similar reduction theorem holds true. This generalization when k = 3 has been proved in this paper.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a discrete integrable system generalizing the discrete (real) cross-ratio system in $S^4$ to complex values of a generalized cross-ratio by considering $S^4$ as a real section of the complex Plücker quadric, realized as the space of two-spheres in $S^4.$ We develop the geometry of the Plücker quadric by examining the novel contact properties of two-spheres in $S^4,$ generalizing classical Lie geometry in $S^3.$ Discrete differential geometry aims to develop discrete equivalents of the geometric notions and methods of classical differential geometry. We define discrete principal contact element nets for the Plücker quadric and prove several elementary results. Employing a second real real structure, we show that these results generalize previous results by Bobenko and Suris $(2007)$ on discrete differential geometry in the Lie quadric.

Abstract:We develop the integration theory of two-parameter controlled paths $Y$ allowing us to define integrals of the form \begin{equation} \int_{[s,t] \times [u,v]} Y_{r,r'} \;d(X_{r}, X_{r'}) \end{equation} where $X$ is the geometric $p$-rough path that controls $Y$. This extends to arbitrary regularity the definition presented for $2\leq p<3$ in the recent paper of Hairer and Gerasimovičs where it is used in the proof of a version of Hörmander's theorem for a class of SPDEs. We extend the Fubini type theorem of the same paper by showing that this two-parameter integral coincides with the two iterated one-parameter integrals \[ \int_{[s,t] \times [u,v]} Y_{r,r'} \;d(X_{r}, X_{r'}) = \int_{s}^{t} \int_{u}^{v} Y_{r,r'} \;dX_{r'} \;dX_{r'} = \int_{u}^{v} \int_{s}^{t} Y_{r,r'} \;dX_{r} \;dX_{r'}. \] A priori these three integrals have distinct definitions, and so this parallels the classical Fubini's theorem for product measures. By extending the two-parameter Young-Towghi inequality in this context, we derive a maximal inequality for the discrete integrals approximating the two-parameter integral. We also extend the analysis to consider integrals of the form \begin{equation*} \int_{[s,t] \times [u,v]} Y_{r,r'} \; d(X_{r}, \tilde{X}_{r'}) \end{equation*} for possibly different rough paths $X$ and $\tilde{X}$, and obtain the corresponding Fubini type theorem. We prove continuity estimates for these integrals in the appropriate rough path topologies. As an application we consider the signature kernel, which has recently emerged as a useful tool in data science, as an example of a two-parameter controlled rough path which also solves a two-parameter rough integral equation.

Abstract:An extension of the notion of solvable structure for involutive distributions of vector fields is introduced. The new structures are based on a generalization of the concept of symmetry of a distribution of vector fields, inspired in the extension of Lie point symmetries to $\mathcal{C}^{\infty}$-symmetries for ODEs developed in the recent years. These new objects, named $\mathcal{C}^{\infty}$-structures, play a fundamental role in the integrability of the distribution: the knowledge of a $\mathcal{C}^{\infty}$-structure for a corank $k$ involutive distribution permits to find its integral manifolds by solving $k$ successive completely integrable Pfaffian equations. These results have important consequences for the integrability of differential equations. In particular, we derive a new procedure to integrate an $m$th-order ordinary differential equation by splitting the problem into $m$ completely integrable Pfaffian equations. This step-by-step integration procedure is applied to integrate completely several equations that cannot be solved by standard procedures.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish two families of sharp geometric inequalities for closed hypersurfaces in space forms or other warped product manifolds. Both families of inequalities compare three distinct geometric quantities. The first family concerns the $k$-th boundary momentum, area, and weighted volume, and has applications to Weinstock-type inequalities for Steklov or Wentzell eigenvalues on star-shaped mean convex domains. This generalizes the main results of [12]. The second family involves a weighted $k$-th mean curvature integral and two distinct quermassintegrals and extends the authors' recent work [33] with G. Wheeler and V.-M. Wheeler.

Abstract:We solve the equivalence problem for rank 3 completely nonholonomic vector distributions with 6-dimensional square on a smooth manifold of arbitrary dimension n under very mild genericity conditions. The main idea is to consider the projectivization of the annihilator of a given 3-dimensional distribution. It is naturally foliated by characteristic curves, which are also called the abnormal extremals of the distribution. The dynamics of vertical fibers along characteristic curves defines certain curves of flags of isotropic and coisotropic subspaces in a linear symplectic space. The problem of equivalence of distributions can be essentially reduced to the differential geometry of such curves. The class of all 3-distributions under consideration is split into a finite number of subclasses according to the Young diagram of their flags. The local geometry of distributions can be recovered from the properties of the symmetry group of so-called flat curves of flags associated with this Young diagram. In each subclass we describe the flat distribution and construct a canonical frame for any other distribution. It turns out that for n>6 in the most nontrivial case the symmetry algebra of the flat distribution can be described in terms of rational normal curves (their secants and tangential developables) in projective spaces and its dimension grows exponentially with respect to n.

High-Order Integration on regular triangulated manifolds reaches Super-Algebraic Approximation Rates through Cubical Re-parameterizations

Abstract:We present a novel methodology for deriving high-order quadrature rules (HOSQ) designed for the integration of scalar functions over regular embedded manifolds. To construct the rules, we introduce square-squeezing--a homeomorphic multilinear hypercube-simplex transformation--reparametrizing an initial flat triangulation of the manifold to a hypercube mesh. By employing square-squeezing, we approximate the integrand and the volume element for each hypercube domain of the reparameterized mesh through interpolation in Chebyshev-Lobatto grids. This strategy circumvents the Runge phenomenon, replacing the initial integral with a closed-form expression that can be precisely computed by high-order quadratures. We prove novel bounds of the integration error in terms of the $r^\text{th}$-order total variation of the integrand and the surface parameterization, predicting high algebraic approximation rates that scale solely with the interpolation degree and not, as is common, with the average simplex size. For smooth integrals whose total variation is constantly bounded with increasing $r$, the estimates prove the integration error to decrease even exponentially, while mesh refinements are limited to achieve algebraic rates. The resulting approximation power is demonstrated in several numerical experiments, particularly showcasing $p$-refinements to overcome the limitations of $h$-refinements for highly varying smooth integrals.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero with valuation ring $R$, for instance, $K=\mathbb{Q}_p$ and $R=\mathbb{Z}_p$. We prove a general integral geometric formula for $K$-analytic groups and homogeneous $K$-analytic spaces, analogous to the corresponding result over the reals. This generalizes the $p$-adic integral geometric formula for projective spaces recently discovered by Kulkarni and Lerario, e.g., to the setting of Grassmannians. Based on this, we outline the construction of a nonarchimedean probabilistic Schubert Calculus. For this purpose, we characterize the relative position of two subspaces of $K^n$ by a position vector, a nonarchimedean analogue of the notion of principal angles, and we study the probability distribution of the position vector for random uniform subspaces. We then use this to compute the volume of special Schubert varieties over $K$. As a second application of the general integral geometry formula, we initiate the study of random fewnomial systems over nonarchimedean fields, bounding, and in some cases exactly determining, the expected number of zeros of such random systems.

Abstract:We present a new method to construct integration-by-part (IBP) identities from the viewpoint of differential geometry. Vectors for generating IBP identities are reformulated as differential forms, via Poincaré duality. Using the tools of differential geometry and commutative algebra, we can efficiently find differential forms which generate on-shell IBP relation without doubled propagator. Various $D=4$ two-loop examples are presented.

On regular but non-smooth integral curves

Abstract:Let $C$ be a regular geometrically integral curve over an imperfect field $K$ and assume that it admits a non-smooth point $\mathfrak{p}$ which -- seen as a prime of the separable function field $K(C)|K$ -- is non-decomposed in the base field extension $\overline{K} \otimes_K K(C)|\overline{K}$. In this paper we establish a bound for the number of iterated Frobenius pullbacks needed in order to transform $\mathfrak{p}$ into a rational point. This provides an algorithm to compute geometric $\delta$-invariants of non-smooth points and a procedure to construct fibrations with moving singularities of prescribed $\delta$-invariants. We show that the bound is sharp in characteristic 2. We further study the geometry of a pencil of plane projective rational quartics in characteristic 2 whose generic fibre attains our bound. On our way, we prove several results on separable and non-decomposed points that might be of independent interest.
