Abstract:Quantum violation of Bell inequalities is now used in many quantum information applications and it is important to analyze it both quantitatively and conceptually. In the present paper, we analyze violation of multipartite Bell inequalities via the local probability model - the LqHV (local quasi hidden variable) model [Loubenets, J. Math. Phys. 53, 022201 (2012)], incorporating the LHV model only as a particular case and correctly reproducing the probabilistic description of every quantum correlation scenario, more generally, every nonsignaling scenario. The LqHV probability framework allows us to construct nonsignaling analogs of Bell inequalities and to specify parameters quantifying violation of Bell inequalities - Bell's nonlocality - in a general nonsignaling case. For quantum correlation scenarios on an N-qudit state, we evaluate these nonlocality parameters analytically in terms of dilation characteristics of an N-qudit state and also, numerically - in d and N. In view of our rigorous mathematical description of Bell's nonlocality in a general nonsignaling case via the local probability model, we argue that violation of Bell inequalities in a quantum case is not due to violation of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) locality conjectured by Bell but due to the improper HV modelling of "quantum realism".

The Local Account of Bell Nonlocality

Abstract:In the century-long history of quantum theory, Bell's theorem stands out among the most thought-provoking results of its foundations. It reveals a conflict between quantum theory's predictions and those allowed by a general framework aligning with locality and realism. Experimental vindications of the quantum predictions were of Nobel-Prize merit and contributed to an established conclusion that nature is non-local. In stark contrast with this orthodoxy, I show that within the Heisenberg picture of unitary quantum theory, Bell inequalities are violated with local elements of reality interacting locally. Here is how: Upon measuring her particle of the entangled pair, Alice smoothly and locally evolves into two non-interacting versions of herself, each of which witnesses and records a different outcome -- she \emph{foliates}. Everything that suitably interacts with the Alices foliates in turn, creating worlds which, for all practical purposes, are independent and autonomous. At spacelike separation, an analogous process occurs to Bob when he measures his particle, locally differentiating him and his surroundings into two non-interacting instances. To confirm the violation of Bell inequalities, Alice and Bob must further interact to produce a record of the joint outcomes. The record arises from the two local worlds of Alice, and those of Bob, and foliates into four instances that respectively indicate `$00$', `$01$', `$10$' and `$11$'. If at least one input of the CHSH test is `$0$', the total measure of records displaying the same outcome is $\cos^2(\pi/8)$; if not, this measure pertains to the records of different outcomes. This article formalizes and explains this local account of Bell `nonlocality'.

Bell inequalities as a tool to probe quantum chaos

Abstract:We introduce a permutationally invariant multipartite Bell inequality for many-body three-level systems and use it to explore a possible connection between the presence of nonlocality and quantum chaos. For this, we interpret the Bell operator resulting from fixing the measurement settings as a system Hamiltonian and explore the energy level spacing distribution for different measurement choices and SU(3) irreducible representations. Interestingly, we find that in every irreducible representation displaying nonlocality, the measurement settings yielding maximal violation result in a Bell operator whose energy level spacing distribution signals the absence of quantum chaos. This situation changes when the measurement settings slightly depart from the optimal ones, as we generally observe a level spacing distribution characteristic of chaotic systems. Our work suggests an intriguing connection between Bell nonlocality, quantum chaos and random matrix theory. These subjects belonged to the beloved areas of the late Fritz Haake, and we dedicate this paper to his memory.

Abstract:Bell's theorem is 50 years old. Still there is a controversy about its implications. Much of it has its roots in confusion regarding the premises from which the theorem can be derived. Some claim that a derivation of Bell's inequalities requires just locality assumption, and nothing more. Violations of the inequalities are then interpreted as ``nonlocality'' or ``quantum nonlocality''. We show that such claims are unfounded and that every derivation of Bell's inequalities requires a premise -- in addition to locality and freedom of choice -- which is either assumed tacitly, or unconsciously, or is embedded in a single compound condition (like Bell's ``local causality''). The premise is equivalent to the assumption of existence of additional variables which do not appear in the quantum formalism (in form of determinism, or joint probability for outcomes of all conceivable measurements, or ``additional causes`'', or ``hidden variables'', ``complete description of the state'' or counterfactual definiteness, etc.). A certain irony is that perhaps the main message of violation of Bell's inequalities is that our notion of locality should be based on an operationally well-defined no-signalling condition, rather than on local causality.

Abstract:Recently, it was demonstrated by Son et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{102}, 110404 (2009), that a separable bipartite continuous variable quantum system can violate the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality via operationally local transformations. Operationally local transformations are parameterized only by local variables, however in order to allow violation of the CHSH inequality a maximally entangled ancilla was necessary. The use of the entangled ancilla in this scheme caused the state under test to become dependent on the measurement choice one uses to calculate the CHSH inequality thus violating one of the assumptions used in deriving a Bell inequality, namely the `free will' or `statistical independence' assumption. The novelty in this scheme however is that the measurement settings can be external free parameters. In this paper we generalize these operationally local transformations for multipartite Bell inequalities (with dichotomic observables) and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for violation within this scheme. Namely, a violation of a multipartite Bell inequality in this setting is contingent on whether an ancillary system admits any realistic, local hidden variable model i.e. whether the ancilla violates the given Bell inequality. These results indicate that violation of a Bell inequality performed on a system does not necessarily imply that the system is nonlocal. In fact the system under test may be completely classical. However, nonlocality must have resided somewhere, this may have been in the environment, the physical variables used to manipulate the system or the detectors themselves provided the measurement settings are external free variables.

Abstract:Bell nonlocality refers to correlations between two distant, entangled particles that challenge classical notions of local causality. Beyond its foundational significance, nonlocality is crucial for device-independent technologies like quantum key distribution and randomness generation. Nonlocality quickly deteriorates in the presence of noise, and restoring nonlocal correlations requires additional resources. These often come in the form of many instances of the input state and joint measurements, incurring a significant resource overhead. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that single copies of Bell-local states, incapable of violating any standard Bell inequality, can give rise to nonlocality after being embedded into a quantum network of multiple parties. We subject the initial entangled state to a quantum channel that broadcasts part of the state to two independent receivers and certify the nonlocality in the resulting network by violating a tailored Bell-like inequality. We obtain these results without making any assumptions about the prepared states, the quantum channel, or the validity of quantum theory. Our findings have fundamental implications for nonlocality and enable the practical use of nonlocal correlations in real-world applications, even in scenarios dominated by noise.

Abstract:We use the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality to investigate the relationship among entanglement, purity and violation of the Bell inequality. On the one hand, we show numerically that all two-dimensional (qubit) states, whose entanglement of formation (EOF) is larger than 2 + root 2/4, violate the CHSH inequality. On the other hand, any state with purity smaller than 0.5562 may not violate it.
Quantifying Bell nonlocality of a pure two-qudit state via its entanglement

Abstract:For the maximal violation of all Bell inequalities by an arbitrary pure two-qudit state of any dimension, we derive a new lower bound expressed via the concurrence of this pure state. This new lower bound and the upper bound on the maximal Bell violation, found in [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 55, 285301 (2022)] and also expressed via the concurrence, analytically quantify Bell nonlocality of a pure two-qudit state via its entanglement, in particular, prove explicitly that entanglement of a pure two-qudit state is necessary and sufficient for its Bell nonlocality. By re-visiting the pure two-qubit case, we also find and rigorously prove the new results on the correlation properties of an arbitrary pure two-qubit state.

Abstract:We discuss the relations between the violation of the CHSH Bell inequality for systems of two qubits on the one side and entanglement of formation, local filtering operations, and the entropy and purity on the other. We calculate the extremal Bell violations for a given amount of entanglement of formation and characterize the respective states, which turn out to have extremal properties also with respect to the entropy, purity and several entanglement monotones. The optimal local filtering operations leading to the maximal Bell violation for a given state are provided and the special role of the resulting Bell diagonal states in the context of Bell inequalities is discussed.

Abstract:We introduce two types of statistical quasi-separation between local observables to construct two-party Bell-type inequalities for an arbitrary dimensional systems and arbitrary number of measurement settings per site. Note that, the main difference between statistical quasi-separations and the usual statistical separations is that the former are not symmetric under exchange of the two local observables, whereas latter preserve the symmetry. We show that a variety of Bell inequalities can be derived by sequentially applying triangle inequalities which statistical quasi-separations satisfy. A sufficient condition is presented to show quantum violations of the Bell-type inequalities with infinitesimal values of critical visibility $v_c$.

Abstract:The conceptually puzzling features of quantum mechanics as a statistical theory all have their source in the impossibility of relating the probability assignments defined by the quantum state to distributions over determinate values of the physical magnitudes. While some interpretations of quantum mechanics, as well as “hidden variable” modifications of the theory, have proposed several constructions for assigning values to magnitudes (beyond the value assignments defined by the quantum state alone), a variety of theorems exist which impose severe restrictions on such theoretical constructions. This note will deal with Bell's proof (in [2]), that any hidden variable theory satisfying a physically reasonable locality condition is characterized by an inequality which is inconsistent with the quantum statistics. Bell's result has initiated a series of experiments designed to refute the entire class of local hidden variable theories. We show that Bell's inequality actually characterizes a feature of hidden variable theories which is much weaker than locality in the sense considered physically motivated.

Abstract:We show how, in the presence of quantum noises generated by non-commuting Lindblad operators, a maximally entangled Bell state may suffer entanglement sudden death (ESD). Similarly, ESD may occur when a Bell state is under the action of a quantum operation generated by a Hamiltonian in the presence of a quantum noise, provided that the Hamiltonian does not commute with the corresponding Lindblad operator. Practically this means noisy quantum operations could cause ESD during the encoding process in quantum communication protocols like special dense coding ($\cal S$). Next, we show how in the presence of quantum noises which cause ESD, a Bell state may lose its capacity for $\cal S$ before ESD occurs. Finally, we show that a Bell state may indeed fail to yield information transfer better than classically possible when the encoding operations of $\cal S$ are noisy, even though entanglement is not totally destroyed in the process.

Abstract:For two qubits belonging to Alice and Bob, we derive an approach to set up the bound of the Bell operator in the condition that Alice and Bob continue to perform local vertical measurements. For pure states we find that if the entanglement of the two qubits is less than 0.2644 (measured with von Neumann entropy) the violation of the Bell inequality will never be realized, and only when the entanglement is equal to 1 can the maximal violation (2 root 2) occur. For a specific form of mixed states, we prove that the bound of the Bell inequality depends on the concurrence. Only when the concurrence is greater than 0.6 can the violation of the Bell inequality occur and the maximal violation can never be achieved. We suggest that the bound of the Bell operator in the condition of local vertical measurements may be used as a measure of the entanglement.

Abstract:Correlations for the Bell gedankenexperiment are constructed using probabilities given by quantum mechanics, and nonlocal information. They satisfy Bell's inequality and exhibit spatial non stationarity in angle. Correlations for three successive local spin measurements on one particle are computed as well. These correlations also exhibit non stationarity, and satisfy the Bell inequality. In both cases, the mistaken assumption that the underlying process is wide-sense-stationary in angle results in violation of Bell's inequality. These results directly challenge the wide-spread belief that violation of Bell's inequality is a decisive test for nonlocality.

Abstract:One of the striking properties of quantum mechanics is the occurrence of the Bell-type non-locality. They are a fundamental feature of the theory that allows two parties that share an entangled quantum system to observe correlations stronger than possible in classical physics. In addition to their theoretical significance, non-local correlations have practical applications, such as device-independent randomness generation, providing private unpredictable numbers even when they are obtained using devices derived by an untrusted vendor. Thus, determining the quantity of certifiable randomness that can be produced using a specific set of non-local correlations is of significant interest. In this paper, we present an experimental realization of recent Bell-type operators designed to provide private random numbers that are secure against adversaries with quantum resources. We use semi-definite programming to provide lower bounds on the generated randomness in terms of both min-entropy and von Neumann entropy in a device-independent scenario. We compare experimental setups providing Bell violations close to the Tsirelson's bound with lower rates of events, with setups having slightly worse levels of violation but higher event rates. Our results demonstrate the first experiment that certifies close to two bits of randomness from binary measurements of two parties.

Abstract:We study the nonlocality of arbitrary dimensional bipartite quantum states. By computing the maximal violation of a set of multi-setting Bell inequalities, an analytical and computable lower bound has been derived for general two-qubit states. This bound gives the necessary condition that a two-qubit state admits no local hidden variable models. The lower bound is shown to be better than that from the CHSH inequality in judging the nonlocality of some quantum states. The results are generalized to the case of high dimensional quantum states, and a sufficient condition for detecting the non-locality has been presented.

Abstract:Locality and realism are two main assumptions in deriving Bell's inequalities. Though the experimentally demonstrated violations of Bell's inequalities rule out local realism, it is, however, not clear what role each of the two assumptions solely plays in the observed violations. Here we show that two testable inequalities for the statistical predictions of two-qubit systems can be derived by assuming either locality or realism. It turns out that quantum mechanics respects a nonlocal classical realism, and it is locality that is incompatible with experimental observations and quantum mechanics.

Abstract:We have applied an entanglement purification protocol to produce a single entangled pair of photons capable of violating a Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality from two pairs that individually could not. The initial poorly entangled photons were created by a controllable decoherence that introduced complex errors. All of the states were reconstructed using quantum state tomography which allowed for a quantitative description of the improvement of the state after purification.

Abstract:We propose a simple simulation of nonlocal quantum correlations among $N$ qubits using a local hidden variable source with a positive probability distribution, given that each the $N$ observers has access to a local negative bit. Notably, unlike the Toner-Bacon protocol, no exchange of classical bits between the observers is required. Moreover, our simulation can be extended to include Popescu-Rohrlich box correlations.
