Abstract:In general relativity, an inertial frame can only be established in a small region of spacetime, and locally inertial frames are mathematically represented by a tetrad field in gravity. The tetrad field is not unique due to the freedom to perform Lorentz transformations in locally inertial frames, and there exists freedom to choose the locally inertial frame at each spacetime point. The local Lorentz transformations are known as non-Abelian gauge transformations for the tetrad field, and to fix the gauge freedom, corresponding to the Lorentz gauge $\partial^\mu\mathcal{A}_\mu=0$ and Coulomb gauge $\partial^i\mathcal{A}_i=0$ in electrodynamics, the Lorentz gauge and Coulomb gauge for the tetrad field are proposed in the present work. Moreover, properties of the Lorentz gauge and Coulomb gauge for tetrad field are discussed, which show the similarities to those in electromagnetic field.

Abstract:In this article, the auto-Bäcklund transformation of the sine-Gordon equation is formulated as a gauge transformation acting on the Lax connection and preserving its form. This gauge transformation contains the known Darboux transformation as a special case. Therefore the auto-Bäcklund transformation is a dressinglike symmetry but of a different kind in general than the dressing transformation. Only in the case of the transformation between the vacuum and one-soliton solution are these two kinds of transformations equivalent.

Abstract:In treatments of electromagnetism, it is often tacitly assumed that the vector potentials of the field and their conjugate momenta satisfy the canonical Poisson bracket relations, despite the fact that the components of the vector potential are constrained by gauge conditions. Here I explicate how this comes about by imposing Poisson bracket relations on the independent field variables remaining after the Lorenz gauge constraint is accounted for. The naively assumed Poisson brackets happens to be correct even after gauge fixing, owing to a conspiracy between the gauge conditions and the principle of relativity.

Abstract:In this note we show that a "dynamical" interaction for arbitrary spin can be constructed in a straightforward way if gauge and Lorentz transformations are placed on the same foundation. As Lorentz transformations act on space-time coordinates, gauge transformations are applied to the gauge field. Placing these two transformations on the same ground means that all quantized field like spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 spinors are functions not only of the coordinates but also of the gauge field components. This change of perspective solves a couple of problems occuring for higher spin fields like the loss of causality, bad high-energy properties and the deviation of the gyromagnetic ratio from its constant value g=2 for any spin, as caused by applying the minimal coupling. Starting with a "dynamical" interaction, a non-minimal coupling can be derived which is consistent with causality, the expectation for the gyromagnetic ratio, and well-behaved for high energies. As a consequence, on this stage the (elektromagnetic) gauge field has to be considered as classical field. Therefore, standard quantum field theory cannot be applied. Despite this inconvenience, such a common ground is consistent with an old dream of physicists almost a century ago. Our approach, therefore, indicates a straightforward way to realize this dream.

Abstract:The fact that electromagnetic effects propagate at the speed of light suggests how the Lorenz-gauge scalar and vector potentials of a uniformly moving point charge must be modified when the charge was initially at rest and then set suddenly into uniform motion. The modified potentials are shown to satisfy the requisite inhomogeneous wave equations. The gauge function of the transformation of these potentials to the Coulomb gauge is calculated in closed form. It is validated by confirming that the Coulomb-gauge vector potential that is calculated using it yields together with the Coulomb-gauge scalar potential the same electric and magnetic fields as those calculated with the Lorenz-gauge potentials.

Abstract:In a recent paper, with Drago and Pinamonti we have introduced a Wetterich-type flow equation for scalar fields on Lorentzian manifolds, using the algebraic approach to perturbative QFT. The equation governs the flow of the effective average action, under changes of a mass parameter k. Here we introduce an analogous flow equation for gauge theories, with the aid of the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism. We also show that the corresponding effective average action satisfies a Slavnov-Taylor identity in Zinn-Justin form. We interpret the equation as a cohomological constraint on the functional form of the effective average action, and we show that it is consistent with the flow.

Abstract:We introduce the generalized Lorentz gauge condition in the theory of quantum electrodynamics into the general vector-tensor theories of gravity. Then we explore the cosmic evolution and the static, spherically symmetric solution of the four dimensional vector field with the generalized Lorenz gauge. We find that, if the vector field is minimally coupled to the gravitation, it behaves as the cosmological constant. On the other hand, if it is nonminimally coupled to the gravitation, the vector field could behave as vast matters in the background of spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe. But it may be not the case. The weak, strong and dominant energy conditions, the stability analysis of classical and quantum aspects would put constraints on the parameters and so the equation of state of matters would be greatly constrained.

Abstract:Classical motion of a charged particle in an electromagnetic field is described by the Lorentz equation in terms of the field components. The field is defined by the infinitesimal gauge group elements associated with closed curves. The Lorentz equation may be derived from the action principle with an appropriate Lagrangian. The Lagrangian may also be used to associate group elements with curves in the space-time manifold. The action principle is shown here to be an equivalence relation between the infinitesimal elements so defined for a collection of closed curves and the identity element. This suggests a natural extension to require the equivalence of global elements with the identity and by considering all curves. The resulting equation, in addition to providing an extension of the Lorentz equation, also admits a straightforward generalization to non-Abelian gauge fields. The extended equation has an infinite number of trajectories as solutions. The properties of these paths are shown to impart wavelike properties to the particles in motion. In view of these results, the motion of a particle is formulated within the framework of the path integral formalism that yields a generalized Schrödinger type equation in a general gauge field. As a further implication of the properties of the trajectories assigned to a particle, this equation is shown to reduce to a set of equations, one of them being the Klein–Gordon equation.

Abstract:In this paper, the generic part of the gauge theory of gravity is derived, based merely on the action principle and on the general principle of relativity. We apply the canonical transformation framework to formulate geometrodynamics as a gauge theory. The starting point of our paper is constituted by the general De~Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian of a system of scalar and vector fields, which is supposed to be form-invariant under (global) Lorentz transformations. Following the reasoning of gauge theories, the corresponding locally form-invariant system is worked out by means of canonical transformations. The canonical transformation approach ensures by construction that the form of the action functional is maintained. We thus encounter amended Hamiltonian systems which are form-invariant under arbitrary spacetime transformations. This amended system complies with the general principle of relativity and describes both, the dynamics of the given physical system's fields and their coupling to those quantities which describe the dynamics of the spacetime geometry. In this way, it is unambiguously determined how spin-0 and spin-1 fields couple to the dynamics of spacetime. A term that describes the dynamics of the free gauge fields must finally be added to the amended Hamiltonian, as common to all gauge theories, to allow for a dynamic spacetime geometry. The choice of this "dynamics Hamiltonian" is outside of the scope of gauge theory as presented in this paper. It accounts for the remaining indefiniteness of any gauge theory of gravity and must be chosen "by hand" on the basis of physical reasoning. The final Hamiltonian of the gauge theory of gravity is shown to be at least quadratic in the conjugate momenta of the gauge fields -- this is beyond the Einstein-Hilbert theory of General Relativity.

Abstract:Quantum field theories with global symmetries simplify considerably in the large-charge limit allowing us to compute correlators via a semiclassical expansion in the inverse powers of the conserved charges. A generalization of the approach to gauge symmetries has faced the problem of defining gauge-independent observables and, therefore, has not been developed so far. We employ the large-charge expansion to calculate the scaling dimension of the lowest-lying operators carrying U(1) charge Q in the critical Abelian Higgs model in D=4-ε dimensions to leading and next-to-leading orders in the charge and all orders in the ε expansion. Remarkably, the results match our independent diagrammatic computation of the three-loop scaling dimension of the operator ϕ^{Q}(x) in the Landau gauge. We argue that this matching is a consequence of the equivalence between the gauge-independent dressed two-point function of Dirac type with the gauge-dependent two-point function of ϕ^{Q}(x) in the Landau gauge. We, therefore, shed new light on the problem of defining gauge-independent exponents which has been controversial in the literature on critical superconductors, as well as lay the foundation for large-charge methods in gauge theories.

Abstract:For the Lorentz gauge the influence of Gribov copies on the fermion propagator is investigated in quenched lattice compact QED. In the Coulomb phase zero-momentum modes of the gauge fields are shown to be the main reason for a significant deviation from ordinary perturbation theory.

Abstract:We discuss gauge transformations in QED coupled to a charged spinor field, and examine whether we can gauge-transform the entire formulation of the theory from one gauge to another, so that not only the gauge and spinor fields, but also the forms of the operator-valued Hamiltonians are transformed. The discussion includes the covariant gauge, in which the gauge condition and Gauss's law are not primary constraints on operator-valued quantities; it also includes the Coulomb gauge, and the spatial axial gauge, in which the constraints are imposed on operator-valued fields by applying the Dirac-Bergmann procedure. We show how to transform the covariant, Coulomb and spatial axial gauges to what we call ``common form,'' in which all particle excitation modes have identical properties. We also show that, once that common form has been reached, QED in different gauges has a common time-evolution operator that defines time-translation for states that represent systems of electrons and photons. By combining gauge transformations with changes of representation from standard to common form, the entire apparatus of a gauge theory can be transformed from one gauge to another.

Abstract:In the work [\emph{Phys. Rev. D} extbf{84}, 124041 (2011)], to obtain a simple and economic formulation of field equations for generalised theories of gravity described by the Lagrangian , the key equality was derived. In this note, it is demonstrated that such an equality can be directly derived from an off-shell Noether current associated with an arbitrary vector field. As byproducts, a generalized Bianchi identity related to the divergence for the expression of field equations, together with the Noether potential, is obtained. On the basis of the above, we further propose a systematic procedure to derive the equations of motion from the Noether current, and then this procedure is extended to more general higher-order gravities endowed with the Lagrangian encompassing additional terms of the covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor. To our knowledge, both the detailed expressions for field equations and the Noether potential associated with such theories are first given at a general level. All the results reveal that using the Noether current to determine field equations establishes a straightforward connection between the symmetry of the Lagrangian and the equations of motion and such a remedy even can avoid calculating the derivative of the Lagrangian density with respect to the metric.

Abstract:A scale invariant theory of gravity, containing at most two derivatives, requires, in addition to the Riemannian metric, a scalar field and (or) a gauge field. The gauge field is usualy used to construct the affine connection of Weyl geometry. In this note, we incorporate both the gauge field and the scalar field to build a generalised scale invariant Weyl affine connection. The Ricci tensor and the Ricci scalar made out of this generalised Weyl affine connection contain, naturally, kinetic terms for the scalar field and the gauge field. This provides a geometric interpretation for these terms. It is also shown that scale invariance in the presence of a cosmological constant and mass terms is not completely lost. It becomes a duality transformation relating various fields.

The Coulomb gauge in non-associative gauge theory

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to extend existence results for the Coulomb gauge from standard gauge theory to a non-associative setting. Non-associative gauge theory is based on smooth loops, which are the non-associative analogs of Lie groups. The main components of the theory include a finite-dimensional smooth loop $\mathbb{L}$, its tangent algebra $\mathfrak{l},$ a finite-dimensional Lie group $\Psi $, that is the pseudoautomorphism group of $\mathbb{L}$, a smooth manifold $M$ with a principal $\Psi $-bundle $\mathcal{P}$, and associated bundles $\mathcal{Q}$ and $\mathcal{A}$ with fibers $\mathbb{L}$ and $\mathfrak{l}$, respectively. A configuration in this theory is defined as a pair $\left( s,\omega \right) $, where $s$ is a section of $\mathbb{Q}$ and $\omega $ is a connection on $\mathcal{P}$. The torsion $T^{\left( s,\omega \right) }$ is the key object in the theory, with a role similar to that of a connection in standard gauge theory. The original motivation for this study comes from $G_{2}$-geometry, and the questions of existence of $G_{2}$-structures with particular torsion types. In particular, given a fixed connection, we prove existence of configurations with divergence-free torsion, given a sufficiently small torsion in a Sobolev norm.

Abstract:We will discuss some analogies between internal gauge theories and gravity in order to better understand the charge concept in gravity. A dimensional analysis of gauge theories in general and a strict definition of elementary, monopole, and topological charges are applied to electromagnetism and to teleparallelism, a gauge theoretical formulation of Einstein gravity. As a result we inevitably find that the gravitational coupling constant has dimension $\hbar/l^2$, the mass parameter of a particle dimension $\hbar/l$, and the Schwarzschild mass parameter dimension l (where l means length). These dimensions confirm the meaning of mass as elementary and as monopole charge of the translation group, respectively. In detail, we find that the Schwarzschild mass parameter is a quasi-electric monopole charge of the time translation whereas the NUT parameter is a quasi-magnetic monopole charge of the time translation as well as a topological charge. The Kerr parameter and the electric and magnetic charges are interpreted similarly. We conclude that each elementary charge of a Casimir operator of the gauge group is the source of a (quasi-electric) monopole charge of the respective Killing vector.

Derivation of the Gauge Link in Light Cone Gauge

Abstract:In light cone gauge, a gauge link at light cone infinity is necessary for transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution to restore the gauge invariance in some specific boundary conditions. We derive such transverse gauge link in a more regular and general method. We find the gauge link at light cone infinity naturally arises from the contribution of the pinched poles: one is from the quark propagator and the other is hidden in the gauge vector field in light cone gauge. Actually, in the amplitude level, we have obtained a more general gauge link over the hypersurface at light cone infinity which is beyond the transverse direction. The difference of such gauge link between semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan processes can also be obtained directly and clearly in our derivation.
