Abstract:We present here the major results obtained in $\tau$ physics by the Belle and Belle II experiments. For the Belle II experiment, we also discuss prospects for improved measurements of the $\tau$ lepton properties, new results in Michel parameters determination, and searches for $CP$ and lepton flavor violation in $\tau$ decays.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper focuses on the study of the physical properties of the τ-lepton, particularly the measurements carried out through the Belle and Belle II experiments. The τ-lepton is the heaviest known lepton, and its large mass makes it more sensitive to new physics (NP). The study of τ-lepton parameters, such as mass, lifetime, electric and magnetic dipole moments, can test the Lorentz structure of weak interactions and lepton flavor universality, as well as search for CP violation and lepton flavor violation phenomena. The Belle and Belle II experiments are conducted at e+e- colliders and have demonstrated remarkable performance in τ-lepton physics due to their ability to precisely determine the state of τ+τ- pairs and the nearly hermetic detector design. The Belle experiment collected data from approximately 912×10^6 τ+τ- pairs, while Belle II is planned to collect 46×10^9 τ+τ- pairs for more precise measurements. The mass measurement of the τ-lepton is conducted through threshold cross-section measurements or pseudo-mass methods in τ-→π-π+π-ντ decays. The precision of τ-lepton mass measurement is crucial for testing lepton flavor universality and the strong coupling constant αs(mτ). The paper also mentions the lifetime measurement of the τ-lepton, with the Belle experiment achieving the current world-best result with statistical and systematic uncertainties. In addition, the paper discusses improvements in the Belle II experiment, including a new neural network-based low multiplicity trigger, which enhances the efficiency of τ physics analyses. The paper also covers the measurements of the electric dipole moment (EDM) and magnetic dipole moment (MDM) of the τ-lepton, where EDM is tightly constrained within the Standard Model, while MDM has predicted values. Overall, this paper aims to enhance the measurement precision of τ-lepton properties through the Belle and Belle II experiments, in order to deepen our understanding of fundamental particle physics and potential new physics phenomena.
