Abstract:In this article, we show that Fourier eigenmeasures supported on spheres with radii given by a locally finite sequence, which we call $k$-spherical measures, correspond to Fourier series exhibiting a modular-type transformation behaviour with respect to the metaplectic group. A familiar subset of such Fourier series comprises holomorphic modular forms. This allows us to construct $k$-spherical eigenmeasures and derive Poisson-type summation formulas, thereby recovering formulas of a similar nature established by Cohn-Gonçalves, Lev-Reti, and Meyer, among others. Additionally, we extend our results to higher dimensions, where Hilbert modular forms yield higher-dimensional $k$-spherical measures.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on two aspects:
1. **Representation of eigenmeasures**: Researchers try to represent the eigenmeasures of certain Fourier transforms through modular forms. Specifically, they are concerned with measures that have specific modular transformation properties under the Fourier transform, and these measures are supported on the sphere, and the radius of the sphere is given by a locally finite sequence, called k - spherical measures.
2. **Poisson - type summation formulas**: Researchers are also committed to deriving Poisson - type summation formulas, that is, Poisson summation formulas involving the coefficients of modular forms. These formulas have important applications in mathematical physics, aperiodic order, and crystallography.
### Specific problems and methods
- **The relationship between modular forms and eigenmeasures**: The paper shows how to construct k - spherical eigenmeasures through modular forms and derives the corresponding Poisson - type summation formulas. Modular forms are a class of functions defined on the upper half - complex plane, and they have good transformation properties under the action of certain discrete subgroups.
- **Generalization of Poisson - type summation formulas**: The paper also extends the existing Poisson - type summation formulas, especially those involving the coefficients of modular forms. For example, through the Guinand distribution and the third power of the Jacobi theta function, the authors derive new Poisson - type summation formulas.
### Main results
- **Isomorphism between eigenmeasures and modular forms**: The paper proves an important isomorphism theorem, that is, under the action of the Metaplectic group \( \text{Mp}_2(\mathbb{R}) \), there is an isomorphism between the k - spherical measure space \( \text{Meas}_k \) and the Fourier series space \( \text{FS}_k \) that satisfies the modular transformation property. This isomorphism relationship not only reveals the profound connection between eigenmeasures and modular forms, but also provides a method for constructing new eigenmeasures.
- **High - dimensional generalization**: The paper further generalizes the above results to the high - dimensional case, that is, considering measures on \( \mathbb{R}^k \) and establishing a connection with Hilbert modular forms. Hilbert modular forms are a class of modular forms defined on multiple variables, and they have similar good properties in the high - dimensional case.
### Applications and significance
- **Mathematical physics**: These results have a wide range of applications in mathematical physics, especially when studying the Fourier transform properties of aperiodic structures (such as quasicrystals).
- **Crystallography**: In crystallography, the Poisson summation formula is a key tool for describing the pure - point diffraction measurement of perfect crystals. The results of the paper provide a new perspective for understanding and deriving the pure - point diffraction formula of quasicrystals (mathematical quasicrystals).
- **Harmonic analysis**: These results also provide new tools and methods for certain problems in harmonic analysis, especially the summation formulas involving the coefficients of modular forms.
In conclusion, through the connection between modular forms and eigenmeasures, this paper deepens the understanding of Poisson - type summation formulas and provides a new theoretical basis for research in related fields.
