Abstract:A colored link, as defined by Francesca Aicardi, is an oriented classical link together with a coloration, which is a function defined on the set of link components and whose image is a finite set of colors. An oriented classical link can be regarded as a colored link with its components colored with a sole color. Aicardi constructed an invariant $F(L)$ of colored links $L$ defined via skein relations. When the components of a colored link are colored with the same color or when the colored link is a knot, $F(L)$ is a specialization of the HOMFLY-PT polynomial. Aicardi also showed that $F(L)$ is a stronger invariant than the HOMFLY-PT polynomial when evaluated on colored links whose components have different colors. In this paper, we provide a state-sum model for the invariant $F(L)$ of colored links using a graphical calculus for oriented, colored, 4-valent planar graphs. We also extend $F(L)$ to an invariant of oriented colored singular links.

Volume conjecture for $SU(n)$-invariants

Abstract: This paper discuss an intrinsic relation among congruent relations \cite{CLPZ}, cyclotomic expansion and Volume Conjecture for $SU(n)$ invariants. Motivated by the congruent relations for $SU(n)$ invariants obtained in our previous work \cite{CLPZ}, we study certain limits of the $SU(n)$ invariants at various roots of unit. First, we prove a new symmetry property for the $SU(n)$ invariants by using a symmetry of colored HOMFLYPT invariants. Then we propose some conjectural formulas including the cyclotomic expansion conjecture and volume conjecture for $SU(n)$ invariants (specialization of colored HOMFLYPT invariants). We also give the proofs of these conjectural formulas for the case of figure-eight knot.

Abstract:The original HOMFLY-PT polynomials can be fully determined by a very simple rule, the skein relation, while the colored HOMFLY-PT invariants (2 variables) of links are notoriously hard to compute. Inspired by the large N duality connecting Chern–Simons gauge theory and topological string theory, the Labastida–Mariño–Ooguri–Vafa (LMOV) conjecture for links (or framed links) predicts integrality, pole order structure and symmetric property for the colored HOMFLY-PT invariants. By studying the LMOV conjecture for framed links, we uncover certain congruence skein relations for the (reformulated) colored HOMFLY-PT invariants. Although these congruence skein relations still can not fully determine the colored HOMFLY-PT invariants, they provide a strong pattern for the colored HOMFLY-PT invariants, which possibly could pave a way for people to understand the very mysterious nature of the colored HOMFLY-PT invariants. We prove that these congruence skein relations hold in many different situations. Finally, we discuss the applications of the congruence skein relations in framed LMOV conjecture.

Abstract:Several classical knot invariants, such as the Alexander polynomial, the Levine-Tristram signature and the Blanchfield pairing, admit natural extensions from knots to links, and more generally, from oriented links to so-called colored links. In this note, we explore such extensions of the Arf invariant. Inspired by the three examples stated above, we use generalized Seifert forms to construct quadratic forms, and determine when the Arf invariant of such a form yields a well-defined invariant of colored links. However, apart from the known case of oriented links, these new Arf invariants turn out to be determined by the linking numbers.

Abstract:We consider the number of colors for the colorings of links by the symmetric group $S_3$ of degree $3$. For knots, such a coloring corresponds to a Fox 3-coloring, and thus the number of colors must be 1 or 3. However, for links, there are colorings by $S_3$ with 4 or 5 colors. In this paper, we show that if a 2-bridge link admits a coloring by $S_3$ with 5 colors, then the link also admits such a coloring with only 4 colors.

Abstract:Under a weight conservation condition when q is not a root of unity, Yang-Baxter relations are solved without the assumption that the upper-left triangle of each sub-block of the S matrix of the braid group representation (BGR) vanishes. A general form of BGR associated with B(n), C(n) and D(n) is obtained and shown to construct link invariants. The many-to-one correspondence between BGRs and link invariants is given.

Abstract:In this self-contained book, following Edward Witten, Maxim Kontsevich, Greg Kuperberg and Dylan Thurston, we define an invariant Z of framed links in rational homology 3-spheres, and we study its properties. The invariant Z, which is often called the perturbative expansion of the Chern-Simons theory, is valued in a graded space generated by Jacobi diagrams. It counts embeddings of this kind of unitrivalent graphs in the ambient manifold, in a sense that is explained in the book, using integrals over configuration spaces, or, in a dual way, algebraic intersections in the same configuration spaces. When the ambient manifold is the standard 3-sphere, the invariant Z is a universal Vassiliev link invariant studied by many authors including Guadagnini, Martellini and Mintchev, Bar-Natan, Bott and Taubes, Altschüler and Freidel, Thurston and Poirier... This book contains a more flexible definition of this invariant. We extend Z to a functor on a category of framed tangles in rational homology cylinders and we describe the behaviour of this functor under various operations including some cabling operations. We also compute iterated derivatives of our extended invariant with respect to the discrete derivatives associated to the main theories of finite type invariants. Together with recent results of Massuyeau and Moussard, our computations imply that the restriction of Z to rational homology 3-spheres (equipped with empty links) contains the same information as the Le-Murakami-Ohtsuki LMO invariant for these manifolds. They also imply that the degree one part of Z is the Casson-Walker invariant.

Abstract:We define higher genus Gromov-Witten invariants and establish a mathematical theory of sigma model coupled with gravity over any semi-positive symplectic manifolds. As applications, we verify the stablizing conjecture of symplectic 4-manifolds for simply connected elliptic surfaces and construct smooth 6-manifolds admitting infinitely many deformation classes of symplectic structures.
Two-tone colorings and surjective dihedral representations for links

Abstract:It is well-known that a knot is Fox $n$-colorable for a prime $n$ if and only if the knot group admits a surjective homomorphism to the dihedral group of degree $n$. However, this is not the case for links with two or more components. In this paper, we introduce a two-tone coloring on a link diagram, and give a condition for links so that the link groups admit surjective representations to the dihedral groups. In particular, it is shown that the link group of any link with at least 3 components admits a surjective homomorphism to the dihedral group of arbitrary degree.

Three-Dimensional Small Covers and Links

Abstract:We study certain orientation-preserving involutions on three-dimensional small covers. We prove that the quotient space of an orientable three-dimensional small cover by such an involution belonging to the 2-torus is homeomorphic to a connected sum of copies of $S^2 \times S^1$. If this quotient space is a 3-sphere, then the corresponding small cover is a two-fold branched covering of the 3-sphere along a link. We provide a description of this link in terms of the polytope and the characteristic function.

On 2d Yang-Mills Theory And Invariants Of Links

Abstract:In these notes we discuss some aspects of 2D Yang-Mills theory and its relation to invariants of knots in circle bundle over surfaces. We show how it is related to the quantization of the algebra of functions on the moduli space flat bundles over a surface. An easy proof is given that the partition function of the YM2 with Wilson loops can be regarded as tile integral of a function over the moduli space of flat bundles over surface with respect to the symplectic volume form. It is also shown that there is an interesting relation between YM2 and invariants of plain curves, in particular with Arnold's J(+)-invariant.
On elementary invariants of genus one knots and Seifert surfaces

Abstract:This elementary article introduces easy-to-manage invariants of genus one knots in homology 3-spheres. To prove their invariance, we investigate properties of an invariant of 3-dimensional genus two homology handlebodies called the Alexander form. The Alexander form of a 3-manifold E with boundary contains all Reidemeister torsions of link exteriors obtained by attaching two-handles along the boundary of E. It is a useful tool for studying Alexander polynomials and Reidemeister torsions. We extract invariants of genus one Seifert surfaces from the Alexander form of their exteriors.

Abstract:We show that there exist split, orientable, 2-component surface-links in $S^4$ with non-isotopic splitting spheres in their complements. In particular, for non-negative integers $m,n$ with $m\ge 4$, the unlink $L_{m,n}$ consisting of one component of genus $m$ and one component of genus $n$ contains in its complement two smooth splitting spheres that are not topologically isotopic in $S^4\setminus L_{m,n}$. This contrasts with link theory in the classical dimension, as any two splitting spheres in the complement of a 2-component split link $L\subset S^3$ are isotopic in $S^3\setminus L$.

Right-angled links in thickened surfaces

Abstract:Traditionally, alternating links are studied with alternating diagrams on $S^2$ in $S^3$. In this paper, we consider links which are alternating on higher genus surfaces $S_g$ in $S_g \times I$. We define what it means for such a link to be right-angled generalized completely realizable (RGCR) and show that this property is equivalent to the link having two totally geodesic checkerboard surfaces, equivalent to each checkerboard surface consisting of one type of polygon, and equivalent to a set of restrictions on the link's alternating projection diagram. We then use these diagram restrictions to classify RGCR links according to the polygons in their checkerboard surfaces, provide a bound on the number of RGCR links for a given surface of genus $g$, and find an RGCR knot. Along the way, we answer a question posed by Champanerkar, Kofman, and Purcell about links with alternating projections on the torus.

Abstract:Bar-Natan used Chinese characters to show that finite type invariants classify string links up to homotopy. In this paper, I construct the correct spaces of chord diagrams and Chinese characters for links up to homotopy. I use these spaces to show that the only rational finite type invariants of link homotopy are the pairwise linking numbers of the components.
