Abstract:We propose a method to evaluate the Gibbs free energy from constant-volume first-principles phonon calculations. The volume integral of the pressure is performed by determining the volume and the bulk modulus in equilibrium at finite temperatures, where the pressure and its volume derivative are evaluated utilizing first-principles calculations of the Grüneisen parameter without varying the volume. As an example, the validity of our method is demonstrated for Al and Ti by comparing with the conventional quasiharmonic approximation that is much more computationally demanding.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problem does this paper attempt to solve? This paper aims to propose an efficient first - principles method for calculating the Gibbs free energy considering the thermal expansion effect. Specifically, the authors hope to solve the following problems: 1. **The influence of thermal expansion on the free energy of materials**: - Thermal expansion mainly stems from the anharmonicity of the lattice and is especially important in non - magnetic materials. - Although the traditional quasi - harmonic approximation (QHA) can evaluate thermal expansion, its computational cost is high, and it may encounter lattice instability problems in the high - temperature phase. 2. **Improve the efficiency of free - energy calculation**: - QHA requires harmonic phonon calculations at different volumes, which is very resource - consuming in terms of computing resources. - The paper proposes a new method, that is, to evaluate the change in Gibbs free energy through first - principles phonon calculations at a single volume, thus avoiding the need for multi - volume calculations. 3. **Verify the effectiveness of the new method**: - The authors verify the effectiveness of the new method in materials such as Al and Ti by comparing the results of the new method with those of the traditional QHA. - The new method can accurately predict the Gibbs free energy of materials and its behavior with temperature change, especially in cases where thermal expansion is significant at high temperatures. ### Method overview The method proposed in the paper is called the "Pressure - Volume Integration (VIP) method", and the main steps are as follows: 1. **Obtain parameters from first - principles phonon calculations at a single volume**: - Use the Grüneisen parameter to calculate the equilibrium volume and bulk modulus. 2. **Combine with the Birch - Murnaghan equation of state**: - Use these parameters to calculate the pressure at different temperatures and obtain the change in Gibbs free energy by integration. 3. **Apply to actual materials**: - Verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the new method by comparing the calculation results of fcc Al and bcc Ti. ### Formula display - **Birch - Murnaghan equation of state**: \[ P(T,V)=\frac{3B_{\text{eq}}}{2}\left[\left(\frac{V_{\text{eq}}}{V}\right)^{\frac{7}{3}}-\left(\frac{V_{\text{eq}}}{V}\right)^{\frac{5}{3}}\right] \] - **Vibrational pressure and its volume derivative**: \[ P_{\text{vib}}(T,V)=-\left(\frac{\partial F_{\text{vib}}}{\partial V}\right)_T \] \[ \left(\frac{\partial P_{\text{vib}}}{\partial V}\right)_T =-\frac{1}{V^2}\sum_{q,j}\left[\Gamma_q^j\omega_q^j\left(\frac{\partial^2F_{\text{vib}}}{\partial(\omega_q^j)^2}\right)_T+\Gamma_q^j\omega_q^j\left(\frac{\partial F_{\text{vib}}}{\partial\omega_q^j}\right)_T\right] \] Through this method, the authors have successfully reduced the demand for computing resources while maintaining high - precision predictions of the thermodynamic properties of materials.
