Abstract:We prove analogs of Peyrière's mutual singularity theorem for standard and generalized Riesz products on the unit sphere of $\mathbb{C}^n$, $n\ge 2$. As a corollary, we obtain an analog of Zygmund's dichotomy for the Riesz products under consideration.

Abstract:We study probability measures that minimize the Riesz energy with respect to the geodesic distance $\vartheta (x,y)$ on projective spaces $\mathbb{FP}^d$ (such energies arise from the 1959 conjecture of Fejes Tóth about sums of non-obtuse angles), i.e. the integral \begin{equation} \frac{1}{s} \int_{\mathbb{FP}^d} \int_{\mathbb{FP}^d} \big( \vartheta (x,y) \big)^{-s} d\mu(x) d\mu (y) \,\,\, \text{ for } \,\,\, s<d \end{equation} and find ranges of the parameter $s$ for which the energy is minimized by the uniform measure $\sigma$ on $\mathbb{FP}^d$. To this end, we use various methods of harmonic analysis, such as Cesàro averages of Jacobi expansions and $A_1$ inequalities, and establish a rather general theorem guaranteeing that certain energies with singular kernels are minimized by $\sigma$. In addition, we obtain further results and present numerical evidence, which uncover a peculiar effect that minimizers this energy undergo numerous phase transitions, in sharp contrast with many analogous known examples (even the seemingly similar geodesic Riesz energy on the sphere), which usually have only one transition (between uniform and discrete minimizers).

Abstract:The Petersson inner product is a natural inner product on the space of modular invariant functions. We derive a formula, written as a convergent sum over elementary functions, for the inner product $E_s(G,B)$ of the real analytic Eisenstein series $E_s(\tau, \bar{\tau})$ and a general point in Narain moduli space. We also discuss the utility of the Petersson inner product as a distance measure on the space of 2d CFTs, and apply our procedure to evaluate this distance in various examples.

Abstract:We study the geometric significance of Leinster's magnitude invariant. For closed manifolds we find a precise relation with Brylinski's beta function and therefore with classical invariants of knots and submanifolds. In the special case of compact homogeneous spaces we obtain an elementary proof that the residues of the beta function contain the same geometric information as the asymptotic expansion of the magnitude function. For general closed manifolds we use the recent pseudodifferential analysis of the magnitude operator to relate these via an interpolating polynomial family. Beyond manifolds, the relation with the Brylinski beta function allows to deduce unexpected properties of the magnitude function for the $p$-adic integers.

Abstract:We consider dynamics of compositions of stationary random C-2 diffeomorphisms. We will prove that the sample measures of an ergodic hyperbolic invariant measure of the system are exact dimensional. This is an extension to random diffeomorphisms of the main result of Barreira, Pesin and Schmeling (1999), which proves the Eckmann-Ruelle dimension conjecture for a deterministic diffeomorphism.

Abstract:Determinantal point processes exhibit an inherent repulsive behavior, thus providing examples of very evenly distributed point sets on manifolds. In this paper, we study the so-called harmonic ensemble, defined in terms of Laplace eigenfunctions on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$ and the flat torus $\mathbb{T}^d$, and the so-called spherical ensemble on $\mathbb{S}^2$, which originates in random matrix theory. We extend results of Beltrán, Marzo and Ortega-Cerdà on the Riesz $s$-energy of the harmonic ensemble to the nonsingular regime $s<0$, and as a corollary find the expected value of the spherical cap $L^2$ discrepancy via the Stolarsky invariance principle. We also show that the spherical ensemble and the harmonic ensemble on $\mathbb{S}^2$ and $\mathbb{T}^2$ with $N$ points attain the optimal rate $N^{-1/2}$ in expectation in the Wasserstein metric $W_2$, in contrast to i.i.d. random points, which are known to lose a factor of $(\log N)^{1/2}$.

Positive Pluriharmonic Functions on Symmetric Siegel Domains

Abstract:Given a symmetric Siegel domain $\mathscr D$ and a positive plurihamonic function $f$ on $\mathscr D$, we study the largest positive Radon measure $\mu$ on the Silov boundary $\mathrm b \mathscr D$ of $\mathscr D$ whose Poisson integral $\mathscr P \mu$ is $\leq f$. If $\mathscr D$ has no tubular irreducible factors of rank $\geq 2$, we show that $\mathscr P \mu$ is plurihamonic, and that $f-\mathscr P \mu$ is linear. As an application, we describe a possible analogue of the family of Clark measures associated with a holomorphic function from $\mathscr D$ into the unit disc in $\mathbb C$.

Fourier series for singular measures in higher dimensions

Abstract:For multi-variable finite measure spaces, we present in this paper a new framework for non-orthogonal $L^2$ Fourier expansions. Our results hold for probability measures $\mu$ with finite support in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that satisfy a certain disintegration condition that we refer to as ``slice-singular''. In this general framework, we present explicit $L^{2}(\mu)$-Fourier expansions, with Fourier exponentials having positive Fourier frequencies in each of the d coordinates. Our Fourier representations apply to every $f \in L^2(\mu)$, are based on an extended Kaczmarz algorithm, and use a new recursive $\mu$ Rokhlin disintegration representation. In detail, our Fourier series expansion for $f$ is in terms of the multivariate Fourier exponentials $\{e_n\}$, but the associated Fourier coefficients for $f$ are now computed from a Kaczmarz system $\{g_n\}$ in $L^{2}(\mu)$ which is dual to the Fourier exponentials. The $\{g_n\}$ system is shown to be a Parseval frame for $L^{2}(\mu)$. Explicit computations for our new Fourier expansions entail a detailed analysis of subspaces of the Hardy space on the polydisk, dual to $L^{2}(\mu)$, and an associated d-variable Normalized Cauchy Transform. Our results extend earlier work for measures $\mu$ in one and two dimensions, i.e., $d=1 (\mu $ singular), and $d=2 (\mu$ assumed slice-singular). Here our focus is the extension to the cases of measures $\mu$ in dimensions $d >2$. Our results are illustrated with the use of explicit iterated function systems (IFSs), including the IFS generated Menger sponge for $d=3$.

Abstract:We continue our study of the Complex Monge-Ampère Operator on the Weighted Pluricomplex energy classes. We give more characterizations of the range of the classes $\mathcal E_ \chi$ by the Complex Monge-Ampère Operator. In particular, we prove that a non-negative Borel measure $\mu $ is the Monge-Ampère of a unique function $\varphi \in \mathcal E_\chi$ if and only if $\chi(\mathcal E_\chi ) \subset L^1(d\mu ).$ Then we show that if $\mu = (dd^c \varphi )^n $ for some $\varphi \in \mathcal E_\chi $ then $\mu = (dd^c u )^n $ for some $u \in \mathcal E_\chi (f) $ where $f$ is a given boundary data. If moreover, the non-negative Borel measure$\mu $ is suitably dominated by the Monge-Ampère capacity, we establish a priori estimates on the capacity of sub-level sets of the solutions. As consequence, we give a priori bounds of the solution of the Dirichlet problem in the case when the measure has a density in some Orlicz space.

Abstract:For an arbitrary dimension n , we study: the polyharmonic Gaussian field hL on the discrete torus TLn=1LZn/Zn , that is the random field whose law on RTLn given by cne−bn(−ΔL)n/4h2dh, where dh is the Lebesgue measure and ΔL is the discrete Laplacian; the associated discrete Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) measure associated with it, that is, the random measure on TLn μL(dz)=expγhL(z)−γ22EhL(z)dz, where γ is a regularity parameter. As L→∞ , we prove convergence of the fields hL to the polyharmonic Gaussian field h on the continuous torus Tn=Rn/Zn , as well as convergence of the random measures μL to the LQG measure μ on Tn , for all γ<2n .

All of the results are sharp, and some of the results give improvements of the results on the unit disc.

Around Furstenberg's times $p$, times $q$ conjecture: times $p$-invariant measures with some large Fourier coefficients

Abstract:For each integer $n\ge 1$, denote by $T_{n}$ the map $x\mapsto nx\mod 1$ from the circle group $\mathbb{T} = \mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$ into itself. Let $p,q\ge 2$ be two multiplicatively independent integers. Using Baire Category arguments, we show that generically a $T_{p}$-invariant probability measure $\mu$ on $\mathbb{T}$ with no atom has some large Fourier coefficients along the sequence $(q^n)_{n\ge 0}$. In particular, $(T_{q^{n}}\mu )_{n\ge 0}$ does not converges weak-star to the normalised Lebesgue measure on $\mathbb{T}$. This disproves a conjecture of Furstenberg and complements previous results of Johnson and Rudolph. In the spirit of previous work by Meiri and Lindenstrauss-Meiri-Peres, we study generalisations of our main result to certain classes of sequences $(c_n)_{n\ge 0}$ other than the sequences $(q^{n})_{n\ge 0}$, and also investigate the multidimensional setting.

Spectral dimensions of Krein-Feller operators in higher dimensions

Abstract:We study the spectral dimensions of Krein-Feller operators for arbitrary for arbitrary finite Borel measures $\nu$ on the $d$-dimensional unit cube ($d\geq2$) via a form approach. We make use of the spectral partition function of $\nu$ as introduced in [Kesseböhmer and Niemann, Exact asymptotic order for adaptive approximations. 2023, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2312.16644" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2312.16644">arXiv:2312.16644</a>] and, assuming that the lower $\infty$-dimension of $\nu$ exceeds $d-2$, we identify the upper Neumann spectral dimension as the unique zero of the spectral partition function, thus revealing the intrinsic connection of these spectral and fractal-geometric quantities. We show that if the lower $\infty$-dimension of $\nu$ is strictly less than $d-2$, the form approach breaks down. Examples are given for the critical case, that is the lower $\infty$-dimension of $\nu$ equals $d-2$. We provide additional regularity assumptions on the spectral partition function, guaranteeing that the Neumann spectral dimension exists and coincides with the Dirichlet spectral dimension. Several prominent examples previously treated in the literature are provided, namely absolutely continuous measures and more generally Ahlfors-David regular measures, and examples not previously treated in the literature, namely self-conformal measures with or without overlaps, for which we show that both the Dirichlet and Neumann spectral dimensions exist and how they can be obtained from the $L^{q}$-spectrum of the measures. We demonstrate how our approach can be used to obtain upper and lower asymptotic spectral bounds for the case of Ahlfors-David regular measures. Moreover, we provide sharp bounds for the upper Neumann spectral dimension in terms of the upper Minkowski dimension of the support of $\nu$ and its lower $\infty$-dimension. Finally, we give an example for which the spectral dimension does not exist.

Fourier Series for Two-Dimensional Singular-Fibered Measures

Abstract:In this paper we study 2D Fourier expansions for a general class of planar measures $\mu$, generally singular, but assumed compactly supported in $\mathbb{R}^2$. We focus on the following question: When does $L^2(\mu)$ admit a 2D system of Fourier expansions? We offer concrete conditions allowing an affirmative answer to the question for a large class of Borel probability measures, and we present an explicit Fourier duality for these cases. Our 2D Fourier analysis relies on a detailed conditioning-analysis. For a given $\mu$, it is based on the corresponding systems of 1D measures consisting of a marginal measure and associated family of conditional measures computed from $\mu$ by the Rokhlin Disintegration Theorem. Our identified $L^2(\mu)$-Fourier expansions are special in two ways: For our measures $\mu$, the Fourier expansions are generally non-orthogonal, but nonetheless, they lend themselves to algorithmic computations. Second, we further stress that our class of 2D measures $\mu$ considered here go beyond what exists in the literature. In particular, our measures do not require affine iterated function system (IFS) properties, but we do study grid IFS measures in detail and provide some technical criteria guaranteeing their admission of Fourier expansions. Our analyses make use of estimates for the Hausdorff dimensions of the measure supports. An important class of examples addressed in this paper is fractal Bedford-McMullen carpets.

Bounded pluriharmonic functions and holomorphic functions on Teichmüller space

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the boundary behavior of bounded pluriharmonic functions on the Teichmüller space. We will show a version of the Fatou theorem that every bounded pluriharmonic function admits the radial limits along the Teichmüller geodesic rays, and a version of the F. and M. Riesz theorem that the radial limit of a non-constant bounded holomorphic function is not constant on any non-null measurable set on the Bers boundary in terms of the pluriharmonic measure. As a corollary, we obtain the non-ergodicity of the action of the Torelli group for a closed surface of genus $g\ge 2$ on the space of projective measured foliations.

Abstract:This work aims to extend part of the two dimensional results of Duplantier and Sheffield on Liouville quantum gravity to four dimensions, and indicate possible extensions to other even-dimensional spaces R^(2n) as well as Riemannian manifolds. Let "\Theta" be the Gaussian free field on R^4 with the underlying Hilbert space being the Sobolev space H^2 witb the inner product determined by the operator (I-\Delta)^2. Assume "\theta" is a generic element from \Theta. We consider a sequence of random Borel measures on R^4, each of which is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure dx and the density function is given by the exponential of a centered Gaussian family parametrized by x in R^4. We show that with probability 1, this sequence of measures weakly converges to a limit random measure which can be "formally" written as "exp(2\gamma\theta(x)dx". In this setting, we also prove a KPZ relation, which is the quadratic relation between the scaling exponent of a bounded Borel set on R^4 under the Lebesgue measure and its counterpart under the random measure obtained above. Our approach is similar to the one used by Duplantier and Sheffield in 2D but with adaptations to R^4.

On the dimension of exceptional parameters for nonlinear projections, and the discretized Elekes-Rónyai theorem

Abstract:We consider four related problems. (1) Obtaining dimension estimates for the set of exceptional vantage points for the pinned Falconer distance problem. (2) Nonlinear projection theorems, in the spirit of Kaufman, Bourgain, and Shmerkin. (3) The parallelizability of planar $d$-webs. (4) The Elekes-Rónyai theorem on expanding polynomials. Given a Borel set $A$ in the plane, we study the set of exceptional vantage points, for which the pinned distance $\Delta_p(A)$ has small dimension, that is, close to $(\dim A)/2$. We show that if this set has positive dimension, then it must have very special structure. This result follows from a more general single-scale nonlinear projection theorem, which says that if $\phi_1,\phi_2,\phi_3$ are three smooth functions whose associated 3-web has non-vanishing Blaschke curvature, and if $A$ is a $(\delta,\alpha)_2$-set in the sense of Katz and Tao, then at least one of the images $\phi_i(A)$ must have measure much larger than $|A|^{1/2}$, where $|A|$ stands for the measure of $A$. We prove analogous results for $d$ smooth functions $\phi_1,\ldots,\phi_d$, whose associated $d$-web is not parallelizable. We use similar tools to characterize when bivariate real analytic functions are "dimension expanding" when applied to a Cartesian product: if $P$ is a bivariate real analytic function, then $P$ is either locally of the form $h(a(x) + b(y))$, or $P(A,B)$ has dimension at least $\alpha+c$ whenever $A$ and $B$ are Borel sets with Hausdorff dimension $\alpha$. Again, this follows from a single-scale estimate, which is an analogue of the Elekes-Rónyai theorem in the setting of the Katz-Tao discretized ring conjecture.
