They give a down-to-earth introduction to Khovanov and Seidel's categorical representation of Artin-Tits groups, emphasizing the fact that it is all explicitly computable. Several prospective applications to (geometric) group theory are mentioned.

Abstract:We unify and generalize several approaches to constructing braid group representations from finite groups, using iterated twisted tensor products. We provide some general characterizations and classification of these representations, focusing on the size of their images, which are typically finite groups. The well-studied Gaussian representations associated with metaplectic modular categories can be understood in this framework, and we give some new examples to illustrate their ubiquity. Our results suggest a relationship between the braiding on the G-gaugings of a pointed modular category $${\mathcal {C}}(A,Q)$$ and that of $${\mathcal {C}}(A,Q)$$ itself.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a semisimple simply-laced Lie algebra of finite type. Let $\mathcal{C}$ be an abelian categorical representation of the quantum group $U_q(\mathfrak{g})$ categorifying an integrable representation $V$. The Artin braid group $B$ of $\mathfrak{g}$ acts on $D^b(\mathcal{C})$ by Rickard complexes, providing a triangulated equivalence $\Theta_{w_0}:D^b(\mathcal{C}_\mu) \to D^b(\mathcal{C}_{w_0(\mu)})$, where $\mu$ is a weight of $V$ and $\Theta_{w_0}$ is a positive lift of the longest element of the Weyl group. We prove that this equivalence is t-exact up to shift when $V$ is isotypic, generalising a fundamental result of Chuang and Rouquier in the case $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}_2$. For general $V$, we prove that $\Theta_{w_0}$ is a perverse equivalence with respect to a Jordan-Hölder filtration of $\mathcal{C}$. Using these results we construct, from the action of $B$ on $V$, an action of the cactus group on the crystal of $V$. This recovers the cactus group action on $V$ defined via generalised Schützenberger involutions, and provides a new connection between categorical representation theory and crystal bases. We also use these results to give new proofs of theorems of Berenstein-Zelevinsky, Rhoades, and Stembridge regarding the action of symmetric group on the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of its Specht modules.

Abstract:This carefully written textbook provides an accessible introduction to the representation theory of algebras, including representations of quivers. The book starts with basic topics on algebras and modules, covering fundamental results such as the Jordan-Hölder theorem on composition series, the Artin-Wedderburn theorem on the structure of semisimple algebras and the Krull-Schmidt theorem on indecomposable modules. The authors then go on to study representations of quivers in detail, leading to a complete proof of Gabriel's celebrated theorem characterizing the representation type of quivers in terms of Dynkin diagrams. Requiring only introductory courses on linear algebra and groups, rings and fields, this textbook is aimed at undergraduate students. With numerous examples illustrating abstract concepts, and including more than 200 exercises (with solutions to about a third of them), the book provides an example-driven introduction suitable for self-study and use alongside lecture courses.
Virtual Braids and Cluster Algebras

Abstract:In 2015 Hikami and Inoue constructed a representation of the braid group in terms of cluster algebra associated with the decomposition of the complement of the corresponding knot into ideal hyperbolic tetrahedra. This representation leads to the calculation of the hyperbolic volume of the complement of the knot that is the closure of the corresponding braid. In this paper, based on the Hikami-Inoue representation discussed above, we construct a representation for the virtual braid group. We show that the so-called "forbidden relations" do not hold in the image of the resulting representation. In addition, based on the developed method, we construct representations for the flat braid group and the flat virtual braid group.

Abstract:We prove that the quotients of the group algebra of the braid group on 3 strands by a generic quartic and quintic relation respectively, have finite rank. This is a special case of a conjecture by Broué, Malle and Rouquier for the generic Hecke algebra of an arbitrary complex reflection group. Exploring the consequences of this case, we will prove that we can determine completely the irreducible representations of this braid group for dimension at most 5, thus reproving a classification of Tuba and Wenzl in a more general framework.

Abstract:We construct knot invariants categorifying the quantum knot variants for all representations of quantum groups. We show that these invariants coincide with previous invariants defined by Khovanov for sl_2 and sl_3 and by Mazorchuk-Stroppel and Sussan for sl_n. Our technique is to study 2-representations of 2-quantum groups (in the sense of Rouquier and Khovanov-Lauda) categorifying tensor products of irreducible representations. These are the representation categories of certain finite dimensional algebras with an explicit diagrammatic presentation, generalizing the cyclotomic quotient of the KLR algebra. When the Lie algebra under consideration is $\mathfrak{sl}_n$, we show that these categories agree with certain subcategories of parabolic category O for gl_k. We also investigate the finer structure of these categories: they are standardly stratified and satisfy a double centralizer property with respect to their self-dual modules. The standard modules of the stratification play an important role as test objects for functors, as Vermas do in more classical representation theory. The existence of these representations has consequences for the structure of previously studied categorifications. It allows us to prove the non-degeneracy of Khovanov and Lauda's 2-category (that its Hom spaces have the expected dimension) in all symmetrizable types, and that the cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebras are symmetric Frobenius. In work of Reshetikhin and Turaev, the braiding and (co)evaluation maps between representations of quantum groups are used to define polynomial knot invariants. We show that the categorifications of tensor products are related by functors categorifying these maps, which allow the construction of bigraded knot homologies whose graded Euler characteristics are the original polynomial knot invariants.

Abstract:We construct irreducible graded representations of simply laced Khovanov-Lauda algebras which are concentrated in one degree. The underlying combinatorics of skew shapes and standard tableaux corresponding to arbitrary simply laced types has been developed previously by Peterson, Proctor and Stembridge. In particular, the Peterson-Proctor hook formula gives dimensions of the homogeneous irreducible modules corresponding to straight shapes.

Abstract:In this paper, we will develop a family of braid representations of Artin groups of type B from braided vector spaces, and identify the homology of these groups with these coefficients with the cohomology of a specific bimodule over a quantum shuffle algebra. As an application, we give a complete characterization of the homology of type- B Artin groups with coefficients in one-dimensional braid representations over a field of characteristic 0. We will also discuss two different approaches to this computation: the first method extends a computation of the homology of braid groups due to Ellenberg–Tran–Westerland by means of induced representation, while the second method involves constructing a cellular stratification for configuration spaces of the punctured complex plane.

Abstract:Twin groups and virtual twin groups are planar analogues of braid groups and virtual braid groups, respectively. These groups play the role of braid groups in the Alexander-Markov correspondence for the theory of stable isotopy classes of immersed circles on orientable surfaces. Motivated by the general idea of Artin and a recent work of Bellingeri and Paris \cite{BellingeriParis2020}, we obtain a complete description of homomorphisms between virtual twin groups and symmetric groups, which as an application gives us the precise structure of the automorphism group of the virtual twin group $VT_n$ on $n \ge 2$ strands. This is achieved by showing the existence of an irreducible right-angled Coxeter group $KT_n$ inside $VT_n$. As a by-product, it also follows that the twin group $T_n$ embeds inside the virtual twin group $VT_n$, which is an analogue of a similar result for braid groups.

Abstract:The boundary seam algebras $\mathsf{b}_{n,k}(\beta=q+q^{-1})$ were introduced by Morin-Duchesne, Ridout and Rasmussen to formulate algebraically a large class of boundary conditions for two-dimensional statistical loop models. The representation theory of these algebras $\mathsf{b}_{n,k}(\beta=q+q^{-1})$ is given: their irreducible, standard (cellular) and principal modules are constructed and their structure explicited in terms of their composition factors and of non-split short exact sequences. The dimensions of the irreducible modules and of the radicals of standard ones are also given. The methods proposed here might be applicable to a large family of algebras, for example to those introduced recently by Flores and Peltola, and Crampé and Poulain d'Andecy.

Abstract representation theory of Dynkin quivers of type A

Abstract:We study the representation theory of Dynkin quivers of type A in abstract stable homotopy theories, including those associated to fields, rings, schemes, differential-graded algebras, and ring spectra. Reflection functors, (partial) Coxeter functors, and Serre functors are defined in this generality and these equivalences are shown to be induced by universal tilting modules, certain explicitly constructed spectral bimodules. In fact, these universal tilting modules are spectral refinements of classical tilting complexes. As a consequence we obtain split epimorphisms from the spectral Picard groupoid to derived Picard groupoids over arbitrary fields. These results are consequences of a more general calculus of spectral bimodules and admissible morphisms of stable derivators. As further applications of this calculus we obtain examples of universal tilting modules which are new even in the context of representations over a field. This includes Yoneda bimodules on mesh categories which encode all the other universal tilting modules and which lead to a spectral Serre duality result. Finally, using abstract representation theory of linearly oriented $A_n$-quivers, we construct canonical higher triangulations in stable derivators and hence, a posteriori, in stable model categories and stable $\infty$-categories.

Abstract:Four lectures on invertible field theories at the Park City Mathematics Institute 2019. Cobordism categories are introduced both as plain categories and topologically enriched. We then discuss localization of categories and its relationship to classifying spaces, and state the main theorem of classification of invertible field theories in these terms. We also discuss symmetric monoidal structures and their relationship to actions of the little disk operads. In the final lecture we discuss an application of cobordism categories to characteristic classes of surface bundles. Emphasis will be on self-contained definitions and statements, referring to original literature for proofs. We also include problem sets from the three exercise sessions at the summer school, and solutions to two problems.

Computing the Khovanov homology of 2 strand braid links via generators and relations

Abstract:In "Homfly polynomial via an invariant of colored plane graphs", Murakami, Ohtsuki, and Yamada provide a state-sum description of the level $n$ Jones polynomial of an oriented link in terms of a suitable braided monoidal category whose morphisms are $\mathbb{Q}[q,q^{-1}]$-linear combinations of oriented trivalent planar graphs, and give a corresponding description for the HOMFLY-PT polynomial. We extend this construction and express the Khovanov-Rozansky homology of an oriented link in terms of a combinatorially defined category whose morphisms are equivalence classes of formal complexes of (formal direct sums of shifted) oriented trivalent plane graphs. By working combinatorially, one avoids many of the computational difficulties involved in the matrix factorization computations of the original Khovanov-Rozansky formulation: one systematically uses combinatorial relations satisfied by these matrix factorizations to simplify the computation at a level that is easily handled. By using this technique, we are able to provide a computation of the level $n$ Khovanov-Rozansky invariant of the 2-strand braid link with $k$ crossings, for arbitrary $n$ and $k$, confirming and extending previous results and conjectural predictions by Anokhina-Morozov, Beliakova-Putyra-Wehrli, Carqueville-Murfet, Dolotin-Morozov, Gukov-Iqbal-Kozcaz-Vafa, Nizami-Munir-Sohail-Usman, and Rasmussen.
