Abstract:We identify a time crystal phase characterized by a frequency half of the driving frequency in disordered superconductors by employing the time dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism at zero temperature with a periodically driven coupling constant. After a period of exponential increase of spatial inhomogeneities and exponential suppression of the order parameter amplitude, the time crystal develops islands of different sizes. Each of these islands is a time crystal with the same frequency albeit with a phase shift $\pi$ with respect to the homogeneous time crystal. After its emergence, the island gradually becomes smaller, though the phase shift persists, until it is abruptly synchronized at a time that it depends on its initial size. We find a critical disorder strength, still deep in the metallic phase, at which the time crystal phase terminates. For even stronger disorder, the order parameter oscillates with the driving frequency in regions where localization effects are not important.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the emergence and synchronization of spatial modes in superconducting time crystals. Specifically, the researchers analyze disordered superconductors with periodically driven coupling constants at zero temperature using the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism. They identify a time crystal phase whose characteristic frequency is half of the driving frequency. The core issue of the paper is to investigate whether this time crystal phase remains stable in the presence of weak disorder, and if stable, how it is altered by these perturbations. Additionally, the study focuses on the breakdown of the time crystal phase as the disorder strength increases. The main findings of the research include: 1. **Stability of the time crystal phase**: Even in the presence of weak disorder (e.g., disorder strength \(V \approx 0.001\)), the time crystal phase remains stable. In this case, some isolated, unstable island regions appear, exhibiting phase shifts different from the surrounding uniform regions. 2. **Development of spatial modes**: As the system evolves, these islands gradually shrink and eventually synchronize with other parts. Over longer time scales, despite these changes, the frequency of the time crystal oscillations remains unchanged. 3. **Impact of disorder strength**: For stronger disorder strengths (\(V \gtrsim 0.7\)), the time crystal phase completely collapses. This means that even within the metallic region, sufficiently strong disorder leads to the disappearance of the time crystal phase. In summary, the paper aims to understand the behavioral characteristics and stability of the time crystal phase under different levels of disorder conditions.
