Abstract:In a nanomechanical resonator coupled to a quantum point contact, the back action of the electronic state on mechanical motion is studied. The quantum point contact conductance changing with subband index and the eigenfrequency of the resonator are found to correlate. A model is constructed explaining the frequency deviations by the alternating ability of the quantum point contact to screen the piezoelectric charge induced by mechanical oscillations. The observed effects can be used to develop electromechanical methods for studying the density of states in quasi-one-dimensional systems.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to study the back action of the electron state of the Quantum Point Contact (QPC) on the mechanical motion of the nano - mechanical resonator. Specifically, the authors explored how the electron transport properties of QPC in a quasi - one - dimensional system affect the resonance frequency of the mechanical resonator, and experimentally observed that this back action can be associated with the conduction sub - band filling state of QPC. ### Main problems: 1. **Influence of electron state on mechanical motion**: Study how the electron state of QPC affects the mechanical motion of the nano - mechanical resonator. 2. **Mechanism of resonance frequency change**: Explain why the conduction sub - band filling state of QPC causes the change of the resonator's resonance frequency. 3. **Potential applications**: Explore whether this back action can be used to develop new electromechanical methods to study the density of states (DOS) of quasi - one - dimensional systems, thus providing a new way to understand the many - body effects in these systems. ### Research background: - **Nano - mechanical resonator**: It has sub - micrometer size and extremely small mass, exhibits high quality factor and resonance frequency, and can be used to study the transition between classical and quantum motion and complex non - linear dynamics. - **Electromagnetic coupling**: On - chip driving and detection of nano - mechanical motion are achieved through electrostatic, magnetoelectric or piezoelectric properties. Especially when the system size is reduced, this coupling will produce new effects that cannot be observed in the macroscopic world. - **Quantum Point Contact (QPC)**: QPC is a special electronic device, and its electron transport properties change with the change of sub - band filling state. When QPC is coupled with a nano - mechanical resonator, the quantum effects of electron transport will have a significant impact on the mechanical motion. ### Experimental results: - **Association between resonance frequency and QPC conductivity**: In the experiment, it was observed that when QPC is in different sub - band filling states, the resonance frequency of the resonator will change significantly. These changes are closely related to the conductivity of QPC. - **Role of piezoelectric effect**: The authors believe that this frequency change can be explained by the piezoelectric effect. The stress caused by mechanical vibration will generate piezoelectric bound charges inside the material, and QPC partially shields these charges, thus changing the energy of the system and leading to the change of the resonance frequency. ### Formula analysis: - **Resonance frequency shift formula**: \[ \Delta f=\frac{1}{8\pi^{2}m^{*}f_{0}}\frac{d^{2}U}{d\xi^{2}} \] where \(m^{*}\) is the effective mass, \(f_{0}\) is the unperturbed resonance frequency, \(U(\xi)\) is the potential energy of the system, and \(\xi\) is the displacement of the center point of the resonator. - **Frequency change caused by piezoelectric effect**: \[ \Delta f_{\text{piezo}}=\frac{e^{2}}{8\pi^{2}f_{0}m^{*}}\left(\frac{\partial\rho_{0}}{\partial\xi}\right)^{2}\Delta\Phi \] where \(\Delta\Phi\) is the potential change caused by the piezoelectric effect, and \(\rho_{0}(\xi)\) is the piezoelectric bound charge density. ### Conclusion: This research reveals the back action of the electron state of QPC on the mechanical motion of the nano - mechanical resonator, and explains the change of the resonance frequency through the piezoelectric effect. This finding provides a new experimental method for studying the density of states of quasi - one - dimensional systems and their many - body effects.
