Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the possible homotopy types of the total space of a principal $SU(2)$-bundle over a $3$-connected $8$-dimensional Poincaré duality complex. Along the way, we also classify the $3$-connected $11$-dimensional complexes $E$ formed from a wedge of $S^4$ and $S^7$ by attaching a $11$-cell.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g \geq 3$, and let $G$ be a nontrivial connected reductive affine algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$. Examining the moduli spaces of regularly stable $G$-Higgs bundles and holomorphic $G$-connections with a fixed topological type $d\in \pi_1(G)$ over $X$, we establish that the $k$-th homotopy groups of these two moduli spaces are isomorphic for $k \leq 2g-4$. We also prove that the mixed Hodge structures on the rational cohomology groups of these two moduli spaces are pure and isomorphic. Lastly, we explicitly describe the homotopy groups of the moduli space of $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{C})$-connections over $X$.

Abstract:Topological Spherical T-duality was introduced by Bouwknegt, Evslin and Mathai in [BEM15] as an extension of topological T-duality from $S^1$ bundles to $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-bundles endowed with closed 7-forms. This notion was further extended to sphere bundles by Lind, Sati and Westerland [LSW16] as a duality between $S^{2n-1}$-bundles endowed with closed $(4n-1)$-forms. We generalise this relation one step further and define T-duality for $S^{2n-1}$-bundles endowed with closed odd forms of arbitrary degree. The degree of the form determines the dimension of the fibers of the dual spaces. We show that $T$-duals exist and, as in the previous cases, $T$-dual spaces have isomorphic twisted cohomology.

Equivariant Principal Bundles over the 2-Sphere

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the classification of equivariant principal bundles over the 2-sphere. Isotropy representations provide tools for understanding the classification of equivariant principal bundles. We consider a $\Gamma$-equivariant principal $G$-bundle over $S^2$ with structural group $G$ a compact connected Lie group, and $\Gamma \subset SO(3)$ a finite group acting linearly on $S^2.$ We prove that the equivariant 1-skeleton $X \subset S^2$ over the singular set can be classified by means of representations of their isotropy representations. Then, we show that equivariant principal G-bundles over the $S^2 $ can be classified by a $\Gamma$-fixed set of homotopy classes of maps, and the underlying $G$-bundle $\xi$ over $S^2$ can be determined by first Chern class.

Abstract:M-theory on compact eight-manifolds with $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-holonomy is a framework for geometric engineering of 3d $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories coupled to gravity. We propose a new construction of such $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-manifolds, based on a generalized connected sum, where the building blocks are a Calabi-Yau four-fold and a $G_2$-holonomy manifold times a circle, respectively, which both asymptote to a Calabi-Yau three-fold times a cylinder. The generalized connected sum construction is first exemplified for Joyce orbifolds, and is then used to construct examples of new compact manifolds with $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-holonomy. In instances when there is a K3-fibration of the $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-manifold, we test the spectra using duality to heterotic on a $T^3$-fibered $G_2$-holonomy manifold, which are shown to be precisely the recently discovered twisted-connected sum constructions.

On $(n-2)$-connected $2n$-dimensional Poincaré complexes with torsion-free homology

Abstract:Let $X$ be an $(n-2)$-connected $2n$-dimensional Poincaré complex with torsion-free homology, where $n\geq 4$. We prove that $X$ can be decomposed into a connected sum of two Poincaré complexes: one being $(n-1)$-connected, while the other having trivial $n$th homology group. Under the additional assumption that $H_n(X)=0$ and $Sq^2:H^{n-1}(X;\mathbb{Z}_2)\to H^{n+1}(X;\mathbb{Z}_2)$ is trivial, we can prove that $X$ can be further decomposed into connected sums of Poincaré complexes whose $(n-1)$th homology is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}$. As an application of this result, we classify the homotopy types of such $2$-connected $8$-dimensional Poincaré complexes.

Abstract:A 3-manifold is called \emph{SU(2)}-abelian if every SU(2)-representation of its fundamental group has abelian image. We classify, in terms of the Seifert coefficients, SU(2)-abelian 3-manifolds among the family of graph manifolds obtained by gluing two Seifert spaces both fibred over a disk and with two singular fibers. Finally, we prove that these SU(2)-abelian manifolds are Heegaard Floer homology L-spaces.

Topology and approximation of weak $G$-bundles in the supercritical dimensions

Abstract:For analyzing stationary Yang-Mills connections in higher dimensions, one has to work with Morrey-Sobolev bundles and connections. The transition maps for a Morrey-Sobolev principal $G$-bundles are not continuous and thus the usual notion of topology does not make sense. In this work, we develop the notion of a topological isomorphism class for a bundle-connection pair $\left( P, A\right)$ and use these notions to derive several approximability results for bundles and connections in the Morrey-Sobolev setting. Our proofs follow a connection-oriented approach and also highlight the fact that in the low regularity regime, the regularity of the bundle and connection are intertwined. Our results parallels the theory of the topological degree and approximation results for manifold-valued $\mathrm{VMO}$ maps.

Abstract:Sommese has conjectured a classification of smooth projective varieties X containing, as an ample divisor, a P^d-bundle Y over a smooth variety Z. This conjecture is known if d>1, if dim(X)<5, or if Z admits a finite morphism to an Abelian variety. We confirm the conjecture if the Picard rank rho(Z)=1, or if Z is not uniruled. In general we reduce the conjecture to a conjectural characterization of projective space: namely that if W is a smooth projective variety, E is an ample vector bundle on W, and Hom(E, T_W) is non-zero, then W is isomorphic to P^n.

Abstract:We classify $SU(2)$-cyclic and $SU(2)$-abelian 3-manifolds, for which every representation of the fundamental group into $SU(2)$ has cyclic or abelian image respectively, among geometric 3-manifolds which are not hyperbolic. As an application, we give examples of hyperbolic 3-manifolds which do not admit degree-1 maps to any Seifert fibered manifold other than $S^3$ or a lens space. We also produce infinitely many one-cusped hyperbolic manifolds with at least four $SU(2)$-cyclic Dehn fillings, one more than the number of cyclic fillings allowed by the cyclic surgery theorem.

Abstract:In previous papers, we used the standard simplices $\Delta^p$ $(p\ge 0)$ endowed with diffeologies having several good properties to introduce the singular complex $S^\dcal(X)$ of a diffeological space $X$. On the other hand, Hector and Christensen-Wu used the standard simplices $\Delta^p_{\rm sub}$ $(p\ge 0)$ endowed with the sub-diffeology of $\rbb^{p+1}$ and the standard affine $p$-spaces $\abb^p$ $(p\ge 0)$ to introduce the singular complexes $S^\dcal_{\rm sub}(X)$ and $S^\dcal_{\rm aff}(X)$, respectively, of a diffeological space $X$. In this paper, we prove that $S^\dcal(X)$ is a fibrant approximation both of $S^\dcal_{\rm sub}(X)$ and $S^\dcal_{\rm aff}(X)$. This result easily implies that the homotopy groups of $S^\dcal_{\rm sub}(X)$ and $S^\dcal_{\rm aff}(X)$ are isomorphic to the smooth homotopy groups of $X$, proving a conjecture of Christensen and Wu. Further, we characterize diffeological principal bundles (i.e., principal bundles in the sense of Iglesias-Zemmour) using the singular functor $S^\dcal_{\rm aff}$. By using these results, we extend characteristic classes for $\dcal$-numerable principal bundles to characteristic classes for diffeological principal bundles.

Abstract:We construct infinitely many examples of four manifolds with macroscopic dimension 4 equipped with circle bundles whose total spaces admit metrics of positive scalar curvature. Abstract:We consider the four dimensional scale invariant N = 2 SUquiver gauge theories with USp(2N) ends or SU(2N) ends with antisymmetric matter representations. We argue that these theories are realized as six dimensional A(2N-1) (0, 2) theories compactified on spheres with punctures. With this realization, we can study various strongly coupled cusps in moduli space and find the S-dual theories. We find a class of isolated superconformal field theories with only odd dimensional operators D(phi) >= 3 and superconformal field theories with only even dimensional operators D(phi) >= 4.

Abstract:For a principal bundle $P\to M$ equipped with a connection ${\bar A}$, we study an infinite dimensional bundle ${\mathcal P}^{\rm dec}_{\bar A}P$ over the space of paths on $M$, with the points of ${\mathcal P}^{\rm dec}_{\bar A}P$ being horizontal paths on $P$ decorated with elements of a second structure group. We construct parallel transport processes on such bundles and study holonomy bundles in this setting. We explain the relationship with categorical geometry and explore the notion of categorical connections on categorical principal bundles in a concrete differential geometric way.

Generalized complex structure on certain principal torus bundles

Abstract:A principal torus bundle over a complex manifold with even dimensional fiber and characteristic class of type $(1,1)$ admits a family of regular generalized complex structures (GCS) with the fibers as leaves of the associated symplectic foliation. We show that such a generalized complex structure is equivalent to the product of the complex structure on the base and the symplectic structure on the fiber in a tubular neighborhood of an arbitrary fiber if and only if the bundle is flat. This has consequences for the generalized Dolbeault cohomology of the bundle that includes a Künneth formula. On a more general note, if a principal bundle over a complex manifold with a symplectic structure group admits a GCS with the fibers of the bundle as leaves of the associated symplectic foliation, and the GCS is equivalent to a product GCS in a neighborhood of every fiber, then the bundle is flat and symplectic.

Flows of SU(2)-structures

Abstract:This paper initiates a classification programme of flows of $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-structures on $4$-manifolds which have short-time existence and uniqueness. Our approach adapts a representation-theoretic method originally due to Bryant in the context of $\mathrm{G}_2$ geometry. We show how this strategy can also be used to deduce the number of geometric flows of a given $H$-structure; we illustrate this in the $\mathrm{G}_2$, $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$ and $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ cases. Our investigation also leads us to derive explicit expressions for the Ricci and self-dual Weyl curvature in terms of the intrinsic torsion of the underlying $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-structure. We compute the first variation formulae of all the quadratic functionals in the torsion; these provide natural building blocks for $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ gradient flows. In particular, our results demonstrate that both the negative gradient flow of the Dirichlet energy of the intrinsic torsion and the Ricci harmonic flow are parabolic after a modified DeTurck's trick.

Abstract:We show that hyperbolic four-punctured $S^2-$bundles over $S^1$ are distinguished by the finite quotients of their fundamental groups among all 3-manifold groups. To do this, we upgrade a result of Liu to show that the topological type of a fiber is detected by the profinite completion of the fundamental group of a fibered hyperbolic 3-manifold.

Abstract:We construct sphere fibrations over $(n-1)$-connected $2n$-manifolds such that the total space is a connected sum of sphere products. More precisely, for $n$ even, we construct fibrations $S^{n-1} \to \#^{k-1}(S^n \times S^{2n-1}) \to M_k$, where $M_k$ is a $(n-1)$-connected $2n$-dimensional Poincaré duality complex which satisfies $H_n(M_k)\cong \mathbb{Z}^k$, in a localized category of spaces. The construction of the fibration is proved for $k\geq 2$, where the prime $2$, and the primes which occur as torsion in $\pi_{2n-1}(S^n)$ are inverted. In specific cases, by either assuming $n$ is small, or assuming $k$ is large we can reduce the number of primes that need to be inverted. Integral results are obtained for $n=2$ or $4$, and if $k$ is bigger than the number of cyclic summands in the stable stem $\pi_{n-1}^s$, we obtain results after inverting $2$. Finally, we prove some applications for fibrations over $N\# M_k$, and for looped configuration spaces.
