Abstract:We construct families of circles in the plane such that their tangency graphs have arbitrarily large girth and chromatic number. This provides a strong negative answer to Ringel's circle problem (1959). The proof relies on a (multidimensional) version of Gallai's theorem with polynomial constraints, which we derive from the Hales-Jewett theorem and which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:We prove that in the moduli space Md of degree d2 rational maps, any hyperbolic component in the disconnectedness locus and of Cantor circle type is a finite quotient of R4d-4-nxTn, where n is determined by dynamics. The proof uses some ideas from Riemann surface theory (Abel's Theorem), dynamical system and algebraic topology.

Abstract:We show that for every non-spherical set $X$ in $\mathbb{E}^d$, there exists a natural number $m$ and a red/blue-colouring of $\mathbb{E}^n$ for every $n$ such that there is no red copy of X and no blue progression of length $m$ with each consecutive point at distance $1$. This verifies a conjecture of Wu and the first author.

Abstract:An old question posed by Erdős asked whether there exists a set of $n$ points such that $c \cdot n$ distances occur more than $n$ times. We provide an affirmative answer to this question, showing that there exists a set of $n$ points such that $\lfloor \frac{n}{4}\rfloor$ distances occur more than $n$ times. We also present a generalized version, finding a set of $n$ points where $c_m \cdot n$ distances occurring more than $n+m$ times.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of $r$-graphs. The Turán number $ex_r(n;\mathcal{F})$ is defined to be the maximum number of edges in an $r$-graph of order $n$ that is $\mathcal{F}$-free. The famous Erdős Matching Conjecture shows that \[ ex_r(n,M_{k+1}^{(r)})= \max\left\{\binom{rk+r-1}{r},\binom{n}{r}-\binom{n-k}{r}\right\}, \] where $M_{k+1}^{(r)}$ represents the $r$-graph consisting of $k+1$ disjoint edges. Motivated by this conjecture, we consider the Turán problem for tight linear forests. A tight linear forest is an $r$-graph whose connected components are all tight paths or isolated vertices. Let $\mathcal{L}_{n,k}^{(r)}$ be the family of all tight linear forests of order $n$ with $k$ edges in $r$-graphs. In this paper, we prove that for sufficiently large $n$, \[ ex_r(n;\mathcal{L}_{n,k}^{(r)})=\max\left\{\binom{k}{r}, \binom{n}{r}-\binom{n-\left\lfloor (k-1)/r\right \rfloor}{r}\right\}+d, \] where $d=o(n^r)$ and if $r=3$ and $k=cn$ with $0<c<1$, if $r\geq 4$ and $k=cn$ with $0<c<1/2$. The proof is based on the weak regularity lemma for hypergraphs. We also conjecture that for arbitrary $k$ satisfying $k \equiv 1\ (mod\ r)$, the error term $d$ in the above result equals 0. We prove that the proposed conjecture implies the Erdős Matching Conjecture directly.

On a $d$-degree Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem

Abstract:A family of subsets $\mathcal{F}$ is intersecting if $A \cap B \neq \emptyset$ for any $A, B \in \mathcal{F}$. In this paper, we show that for given integers $k > d \ge 2$ and $n \ge 2k+2d-3$, and any intersecting family $\mathcal{F}$ of $k$-subsets of $\{1, \cdots, n\}$, there exists a $d$-subset of $[n]$ contained in at most $\binom{n-d-1}{k-d-1}$ subsets of $\mathcal{F}$. This result, proved using spectral graph theory, gives a $d$-degree generalization of the celebrated Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem, improving a theorem of Kupavskii.

Abstract:Several discrete geometry problems are closely related to the arithmetic theory of elliptic curves defined on the rational fields ℚ. In this paper we consider the θ-congruent number for θ=π/3 and 2π/3 and tiling number n. For the case that n⩾ 2 is square-free odd integer, we determine all n such that the Selmer rank of elliptic curve E_n,π/3: y^2=x(x-n)(x+3n) or/and E_n,2π/3: y^2=x(x+n)(x-3n) is zero. From this, we provide several series of non θ-congruent numbers for θ=π/3 and 2π/3, and non tiling numbers n with arbitrary many of prime divisors.

Abstract:Let $P$ be a set of $n$ points in the plane. In this paper we study a new variant of the circular separability problem in which a point set $P$ is preprocessed so that one can quickly answer queries of the following form: Given a geometric object $Q$, report the minimum circle containing $P$ and exluding $Q$. Our data structure can be constructed in $O(n\log n)$ time using O(n) space, and can be used to answer the query when $Q$ is either a circle or a convex $m$-gon in $O(\log n)$ or $O(\log n + \log m)$ time, respectively.

Cherry Maps with Different Critical Exponents: Bifurcation of Geometry

Abstract:We consider order preserving $C^3$ circle maps with a flat piece, irrational rotation number and critical exponents $(\ell_1, \ell_2)$. We detect a change in the geometry of the system. For $(\ell_1, \ell_2) \in [1,2]^2$ the geometry is degenerate and it becomes bounded for $(\ell_1, \ell_2) \in [2,\infty)^2 \setminus \{(2,2)\}$. When the rotation number is of the form $[abab\cdots]$; for some $a,b\in\mathbb{N}^*$, the geometry is bounded for $(\ell_1, \ell_2)$ belonging above a curve defined on $]1, +\infty [^2$. As a consequence we estimate the Hausdorff dimension of the non-wandering set $K_f= \mathcal{S}^1 \setminus \bigcup_{i=0}^\infty f^{-i}(U)$. Precisely, the Hausdorff dimension of this set is equal to zero when the geometry is degenerate and it is strictly positive when the geometry is bounded.

Minimum Enclosing Circle of a Set of Static Points with Dynamic Weight from One Free Point

Abstract:Given a set $S$ of $n$ static points and a free point $p$ in the Euclidean plane, we study a new variation of the minimum enclosing circle problem, in which a dynamic weight that equals to the reciprocal of the distance from the free point $p$ to the undetermined circle center is included. In this work, we prove the optimal solution of the new problem is unique and lies on the boundary of the farthest-point Voronoi diagram of $S$, once $p$ does not coincide with any vertex of the convex hull of $S$. We propose a tree structure constructed from the boundary of the farthest-point Voronoi diagram and use the hierarchical relationship between edges to locate the optimal solution. The plane could be divide into at most $3n-4$ non-overlapping regions. When $p$ lies in one of the regions, the optimal solution locates at one node or lies on the interior of one edge in the boundary of the farthest-point Voronoi diagram. Moreover, we apply the new variation to calculate the maximum displacement of one point $p$ under the condition that the displacements of points in $S$ are restricted in 2D rigid motion.

Abstract:In 1992, Erdős and Hajnal posed the following natural problem: Does there exist, for every $r\in \mathbb{N}$, an integer $F(r)$ such that every graph with chromatic number at least $F(r)$ contains $r$ edge-disjoint cycles on the same vertex set? We solve this problem in a strong form, by showing that there exist $n$-vertex graphs with fractional chromatic number $\Omega\left(\frac{\log \log n}{\log \log \log n}\right)$ that do not even contain a $4$-regular subgraph. This implies that no such number $F(r)$ exists for $r\ge 2$. We show that assuming a conjecture of Harris, the bound on the fractional chromatic number in our result cannot be improved.

Chromatic numbers of flag 3-spheres

Abstract:A recent conjecture of Chudnovsky and Nevo asserts that flag triangulations of spheres always have linear-sized independent sets, with a precisely conjectured proportion depending on the dimension. For dimensions one and two, the lower bound of their conjecture basically follow from constant bounds on the chromatic number of flag triangulations of $S^1$ and $S^2$. This raises a natural question that does not appear to have been considered: For each $d$ is there a constant upper bound for the chromatic number of flag triangulations of $S^d$? Here we show that the answer to this question is no, and use results from Ramsey theory to construct flag triangulations of 3-spheres on $n$ vertices with chromatic number at least $\widetilde{\Omega}(n^{1/4})$.

Structure and Independence in Hyperbolic Uniform Disk Graphs

Abstract:We consider intersection graphs of disks of radius $r$ in the hyperbolic plane. Unlike the Euclidean setting, these graph classes are different for different values of $r$, where very small $r$ corresponds to an almost-Euclidean setting and $r \in \Omega(\log n)$ corresponds to a firmly hyperbolic setting. We observe that larger values of $r$ create simpler graph classes, at least in terms of separators and the computational complexity of the \textsc{Independent Set} problem. First, we show that intersection graphs of disks of radius $r$ in the hyperbolic plane can be separated with $\mathcal{O}((1+1/r)\log n)$ cliques in a balanced manner. Our second structural insight concerns Delaunay complexes in the hyperbolic plane and may be of independent interest. We show that for any set $S$ of $n$ points with pairwise distance at least $2r$ in the hyperbolic plane the corresponding Delaunay complex has outerplanarity $1+\mathcal{O}(\frac{\log n}{r})$, which implies a similar bound on the balanced separators and treewidth of such Delaunay complexes. Using this outerplanarity (and treewidth) bound we prove that \textsc{Independent Set} can be solved in $n^{\mathcal{O}(1+\frac{\log n}{r})}$ time. The algorithm is based on dynamic programming on some unknown sphere cut decomposition that is based on the solution. The resulting algorithm is a far-reaching generalization of a result of Kisfaludi-Bak (SODA 2020), and it is tight under the Exponential Time Hypothesis. In particular, \textsc{Independent Set} is polynomial-time solvable in the firmly hyperbolic setting of $r\in \Omega(\log n)$. Finally, in the case when the disks have ply (depth) at most $\ell$, we give a PTAS for \textsc{Maximum Independent Set} that has only quasi-polynomial dependence on $1/\varepsilon$ and $\ell$. Our PTAS is a further generalization of our exact algorithm.

Avoiding short progressions in Euclidean Ramsey theory

Abstract:We provide a general framework to construct colorings avoiding short monochromatic arithmetic progressions in Euclidean Ramsey theory. Specifically, if $\ell_m$ denotes $m$ collinear points with consecutive points of distance one apart, we say that $\mathbb{E}^n \not \to (\ell_r,\ell_s)$ if there is a red/blue coloring of $n$-dimensional Euclidean space that avoids red congruent copies of $\ell_r$ and blue congruent copies of $\ell_s$. We show that $\mathbb{E}^n \not \to (\ell_3, \ell_{20})$, improving the best-known result $\mathbb{E}^n \not \to (\ell_3, \ell_{1177})$ by Führer and Tóth, and also establish $\mathbb{E}^n \not \to (\ell_4, \ell_{18})$ and $\mathbb{E}^n \not \to (\ell_5, \ell_{10})$ in the spirit of the classical result $\mathbb{E}^n \not \to (\ell_6, \ell_{6})$ due to Erd{ő}s et. al. We also show a number of similar $3$-coloring results, as well as $\mathbb{E}^n \not \to (\ell_3, \alpha\ell_{6889})$, where $\alpha$ is an arbitrary positive real number. This final result answers a question of Führer and Tóth in the positive.

Abstract:In this paper, we first study a new extremal problem recently posed by Conlon and Tyomkyn~(arXiv: <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2002.00921" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2002.00921">2002.00921</a>). Given a graph $H$ and an integer $k\geqslant 2$, let $f_{k}(n,H)$ be the smallest number of colors $c$ such that there exists a proper edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_{n}$ with $c$ colors containing no $k$ vertex-disjoint color-isomorphic copies of $H$. Using algebraic properties of polynomials over finite fields, we give an explicit proper edge-coloring of $K_{n}$ and show that $f_{k}(n, C_{4})=\Theta(n)$ when $k\geqslant 3$ and $n\rightarrow\infty$. The methods we used in the edge-coloring may be of some independent interest. We also consider a related generalized Ramsey problem. For given graphs $G$ and $H,$ let $r(G,H,q)$ be the minimum number of edge-colors (not necessarily proper) of $G$, such that the edges of every copy of $H\subseteq G$ together receive at least $q$ distinct colors. Establishing the relation to the Turán number of specified bipartite graphs, we obtain some general lower bounds for $r(K_{n,n},K_{s,t},q)$ with a broad range of $q$.

3-uniform monotone paths and multicolor Ramsey numbers

Abstract:The monotone path $P_{n+2}$ is an ordered 3-uniform hypergraph whose vertex set has size $n+2$ and edge set consists of all consecutive triples. In this note, we consider the collection $\mathcal{J}_n$ of ordered 3-uniform hypergraphs named monotone paths with $n$ jumps, and we prove the following relation \begin{equation*} r(3;n) \leq R(P_{n+2},\mathcal{J}_n) \leq 4^n \cdot r(3;n), \end{equation*} where $r(3;n)$ is the multicolor Ramsey number for triangles and $R(P_{n+2},\mathcal{J}_n)$ is the hypergraph Ramsey number for $P_{n+2}$ versus any member of $\mathcal{J}_n$. In particular, whether $r(3;n)$ is exponential, which is a very old problem of Erdős, is equivalent to whether $R(P_{n+2},\mathcal{J}_n)$ is exponential.
