Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study the Lipschitz normally embedded property for a set and its medial axis. We consider if and when a non-LNE set implies non-LNE medial axis and converse. We present an example a of Lipschitz normally set that has medial axis which is not Lipschitz normally emebedded. At the end we discuss special case when a set is a one dimensional germ on a plane.

Abstract:We prove that the medial axis of closed sets is Hausdorff stable in the following sense: Let $\mathcal{S} \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ be (fixed) closed set (that contains a bounding sphere). Consider the space of $C^{1,1}$ diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}^d$ to itself, which keep the bounding sphere invariant. The map from this space of diffeomorphisms (endowed with some Banach norm) to the space of closed subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$ (endowed with the Hausdorff distance), mapping a diffeomorphism $F$ to the closure of the medial axis of $F(\mathcal{S})$, is Lipschitz. This extends a previous stability result of Chazal and Soufflet on the stability of the medial axis of $C^2$ manifolds under $C^2$ ambient diffeomorphisms.

Abstract:We prove that the k-medial axis of an arbitrary closed set in Rn is n-k+1-rectifiable (and hence of dimension at most n-k+1). This result gives a first stratification for medial axis of any closed set, which has been widely studied and used in pure and applied mathematics. This also answers a question proposed by Erdos[4], and leads to more further interesting investigations (see the end of the article).

Abstract:This paper aims to establish a relation between the tangent cone of the medial axis of X at a given point a of R^n$ and the medial axis of the set of points in X realising the distance d(a,X). As a consequence, a lower bound for the dimension of the medial axis of X in terms of the dimension of the medial axis of m(a) is obtained. This appears to be the missing link to the full description of the medial axis' dimension. Further study of potentially troublesome points on the frontier of the medial axis is also provided, resulting in their characterisation in terms of the reaching radius.

Abstract:This paper consists of two parts. In the first one we study the behaviour of medial axes (skeletons) of closed sets in a connected complete Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{M}$ under deformations. The second one is devoted to a similar study of conflict sets. We apply a new approach to the deformation process. Instead of seeing it as a `jump' from the initial to the final state, we perceive it as a continuous process, expressed using the Kuratowski convergence of sets (hence, unlike other authors, we do not require any regularity of the deformation). Our main `medial axis inner semi-continuity' result has already proved useful, as it was used to compute the tangent cone of the medial axis with application in singularity theory.

Abstract:The medial axis transform has applications in numerous fields including visualization, computer graphics, and computer vision. Unfortunately, traditional medial axis transformations are usually brittle in the presence of outliers, perturbations and/or noise along the boundary of objects. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a new formulation of the medial axis transform which is naturally robust in the presence of these artefacts. Unlike previous work which has approached the medial axis from a computational geometry angle, we consider it from a numerical optimization perspective. In this work, we follow the definition of the medial axis transform as ‘the set of maximally inscribed spheres’. We show how this definition can be formulated as a least squares relaxation where the transform is obtained by minimizing a continuous optimization problem. The proposed approach is inherently parallelizable by performing independent optimization of each sphere using Gauss–Newton, and its least‐squares form allows it to be significantly more robust compared to traditional computational geometry approaches. Extensive experiments on 2D and 3D objects demonstrate that our method provides superior results to the state of the art on both synthetic and real‐data. Abstract:In this paper, we propose a robust method to compute the medial axis transformation of a 2D point cloud with noise and/or missing data. The basic approach is to first compute the signed distance function of the point cloud by solving the Eikonal equation, and then an approximation of the signed distance function is obtained by sparse optimization technique. The medial axis of the point cloud corresponds to the non-smooth ridge of the distance function which can be extracted by checking the norm of the gradient of the distance function. The medial axis is segmented into branches and a compact spline representation of each branch can be obtained. We perform experiments on various examples and compare our method with state-of-the-art methods. Experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms previous methods in obtaining accurate and reliable representations for medial axis transformations of noisy 2D point clouds.

Abstract:A closed subset of $\mathbb{R}^q$, definable in some given o-minimal structure, is Lipschitz normally embedded in $\mathbb{R}^q$ if and only if its one-point compactification is Lipschitz normally embedded in the unit sphere ${\bf S}^q$($ = \mathbb{R}^q \cup \{\infty \}$), i.e. the closure of its image by the inverse of the stereographic projection is Lipschitz normally embedded in ${\bf S}^q$. This implies that any closed connected unbounded definable subset of an Euclidean space is definably inner bi-Lipschitz homeomorphic to a Lipschitz normally embedded definable set.

AMAT: Medial Axis Transform for Natural Images

Abstract:We introduce Appearance-MAT (AMAT), a generalization of the medial axis transform for natural images, that is framed as a weighted geometric set cover problem. We make the following contributions: i) we extend previous medial point detection methods for color images, by associating each medial point with a local scale; ii) inspired by the invertibility property of the binary MAT, we also associate each medial point with a local encoding that allows us to invert the AMAT, reconstructing the input image; iii) we describe a clustering scheme that takes advantage of the additional scale and appearance information to group individual points into medial branches, providing a shape decomposition of the underlying image regions. In our experiments, we show state-of-the-art performance in medial point detection on Berkeley Medial AXes (BMAX500), a new dataset of medial axes based on the BSDS500 database, and good generalization on the SK506 and WH-SYMMAX datasets. We also measure the quality of reconstructed images from BMAX500, obtained by inverting their computed AMAT. Our approach delivers significantly better reconstruction quality with respect to three baselines, using just 10% of the image pixels. Abstract:This paper presents an algorithm to extract a complete set of optimal scale ridges from the medialness scale space. The result is the multiscale medial axis. This algorithm differs from the previous implementations of optimal scale ridge in that it searches for the local maximum with respect to scale, rather than the global maximum. Therefore a single position is allowed to belong to separate axis segments at different scales; large scale features no longer dominate small scale features.

Abstract:We study the ambient Lipschitz geometry of semialgebraic surfaces. It was discovered in \cite{BBG} that ambient Lipschitz Geometry is different from the outer Lipschtz geometry. We show that two surface germs in $\mathbb{R}^3$, Lipschitz normally embedded and with isolated singularity, are ambient bi-Lipschitz equivalent if, and only if, they are outer bi-Lipschitz equivalent and ambient topologically equivalent.

Abstract:In this paper the computation of medial axis is posed as a statistical inference problem not as a mathematical transform. This method provides answers to two essential problems in computing the medial axis representation. I) Prior knowledge are adopted for axes and junctions so that the axes around junctions become well defined. II) A stochastic jump-diffusion process is proposed for estimating medial axis in a Markov random field. We argue that the stochastic algorithm for computing medial axis is compatible with existing algorithms for image segmentation, such as snake [7] and region competition [18]. Thus it provides a new direction for computing medial axis from real textured images. Experiments are demonstrated on both synthetic and real shapes.

Abstract:We find a new finite algorithm for evaluation of Lipschitz-free $p$-space norm in finite-dimensional Lipschitz-free $p$-spaces. We use this algorithm to deal with the problem of whether given $p$-metric spaces $N\subset M$, the canonical embedding of $\mathcal{F}_p(N)$ into $\mathcal{F}_p(M)$ is an isomorphism. The most significant result in this direction is that the answer is positive if $N\subset M$ are metric spaces.

Abstract:Motivated by the result of Dantas et. al. (2023) that there exist metric spaces for which the set of strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz functions does not contain an isometric copy of $c_0$, we introduce and study a weaker notion of norm-attainment for Lipschitz functions called the pointwise norm-attainment. As a main result, we show that for every infinite metric space $M$, there exists a metric space $M_0 \subseteq M$ such that the set of pointwise norm-attaining Lipschitz functions on $M_0$ contains an isometric copy of $c_0$. We also observe that there are countable metric spaces $M$ for which the set of pointwise norm-attaining Lipschitz functions contains an isometric copy of $\ell_\infty$, which is a result that does not hold for the set of strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz functions. Several new results on $c_0$-embedding and $\ell_1$-embedding into the set of strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz functions are presented as well. In particular, we show that if $M$ is a subset of an $\mathbb{R}$-tree containing all the branching points, then the set of strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz functions contains $c_0$ isometrically. As a related result, we provide an example of metric space $M$ for which the set of norm-attaining functionals on the Lipschitz-free space over $M$ cannot contain an isometric copy of $c_0$. Finally, we compare the concept of pointwise norm-attainment with the several different kinds of norm-attainment from the literature.

Abstract:We introduce L 1 - medial skeleton as a curve skeleton representation for 3D point cloud data. The L 1 -median is well-known as a robust global center of an arbitrary set of points. We make the key observation that adapting L 1 -medians locally to a point set representing a 3D shape gives rise to a one-dimensional structure, which can be seen as a localized center of the shape. The primary advantage of our approach is that it does not place strong requirements on the quality of the input point cloud nor on the geometry or topology of the captured shape. We develop a L 1 -medial skeleton construction algorithm, which can be directly applied to an unoriented raw point scan with significant noise, outliers, and large areas of missing data. We demonstrate L 1 -medial skeletons extracted from raw scans of a variety of shapes, including those modeling high-genus 3D objects, plant-like structures, and curve networks.
Rigidity Properties of the Blum Medial Axis

Abstract:We consider the Blum medial axis of a region in $\mathbb R^n$ with piecewise smooth boundary and examine its "rigidity properties", by which we mean properties preserved under diffeomorphisms of the regions preserving the medial axis. There are several possible versions of rigidity depending on what features of the Blum medial axis we wish to retain. We use a form of the cross ratio from projective geometry to show that in the case of four smooth sheets of the medial axis meeting along a branching submanifold, the cross ratio defines a function on the branching sheet which must be preserved under any diffeomorphism of the medial axis with another. Second, we show in the generic case, along a Y-branching submanifold that there are three cross ratios involving the three limiting tangent planes of the three smooth sheets and each of the hyperplanes defined by one of the radial lines and the tangent space to the Y-branching submanifold at the point, which again must be preserved. Moreover, the triple of cross ratios then locally uniquely determines the angles between the smooth sheets. Third, we observe that for a diffeomorphism of the region preserving the Blum medial axis and the infinitesimal directions of the radial lines, the second derivative of the diffeomorphism at points of the medial axis must satisfy a condition relating the radial shape operators and hence the differential geometry of the boundaries at corresponding boundary points.

Abstract:The medial axis, a lower-dimensional shape descriptor, plays an important role in the field of digital geometry processing. Despite its importance, robust computation of the medial axis transform from diverse inputs, especially point clouds with defects, remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we tackle the challenge by proposing a new implicit method that diverges from mainstream explicit medial axis computation techniques. Our key technical insight is the difference between the signed distance field (SDF) and the medial field (MF) of a solid shape is the unsigned distance field (UDF) of the shape's medial axis. This allows for formulating medial axis computation as an implicit reconstruction problem. Utilizing a modified double covering method, we extract the medial axis as the zero level-set of the UDF. Extensive experiments show that our method has enhanced accuracy and robustness in learning compact medial axis transform from thorny meshes and point clouds compared to existing methods.

Abstract:A discrete medial axis evolution of 2D planar shape is proposed along with the inverse discrete contour evolution.The hierarchy of medial axes of a planar shape is constructed from a most simplified shape,and gradually refined.Distinct from previ-ous medial axis algorithms,in every step during the medial axis evolution process,there is a valid polygon which is similar to the original contour to some extent,as well as its medial axis.It is convenient for the user to monitor a meaningful evolution process rather than a time-consuming program running without any feedback.Due to the discrete contour evolution is simply driven by re-cursive point deletion,the medial axis evolution could be accomplished by locally updating.It is shown in the experiments that the efficiency of the proposed method are improved.
