Abstract:We study the effect of network topology on the collective dynamics of an oscillator ensemble. Specifically, we explore explosive synchronization in a system of interacting star networks. Explosive synchronization is characterized by an abrupt transition from an incoherent state to a coherent state. In this study, we couple multiple star networks through their hubs and study the emergent dynamics as a function of coupling strength. The dynamics of each node satisfies the equation of a Kuramoto oscillator. We observe that for a small inter-star coupling strength, the hysteresis width between the forward and backward transition point is minimal, which increases with an increase in the inter-star coupling strength. This observation is independent of the size of the network. Further, we find that the backward transition point is independent of the number of stars coupled together and the inter-star coupling strength, which is also verified using the Watanabe and Strogatz (WS) theory.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to study the influence of network topology on the collective dynamics of oscillator ensembles, especially to explore the explosive synchronization (ES) phenomenon when multiple star networks are coupled through their hub nodes. The characteristic of explosive synchronization is a sudden transition from an incoherent state to a coherent state, accompanied by a significant hysteresis phenomenon. ### Main problems 1. **Explosive synchronization phenomenon**: The authors attempt to understand the transition characteristics of the system from an incoherent state to a coherent state under different star - network coupling strengths. Specifically, they focus on the explosive synchronization phenomenon, that is, the abrupt nature of synchronization occurrence. 2. **Hysteresis phenomenon**: The change of the hysteresis width with the coupling strength is studied. The hysteresis phenomenon refers to the difference between the forward and reverse transition points. 3. **Influence of coupling strength**: How the coupling strength between different star networks affects the synchronization behavior of the system, especially the positions of the forward and reverse transition points, is explored. ### Research methods - **Model selection**: The Kuramoto oscillator model is used to describe the dynamic behavior of each node. - **Numerical simulation**: The global order parameter \(R\) is calculated through numerical simulation to observe the synchronization process of the system. - **Theoretical analysis**: The Watanabe - Strogatz (WS) theory is used for analytical derivation to verify the numerical results. ### Main findings - **Hysteresis width**: For a smaller inter - star coupling strength, the hysteresis width is the smallest; as the coupling strength increases, the hysteresis width increases. - **Reverse transition point**: The reverse transition point is independent of the number of coupled star networks and the coupling strength, and is consistent with the prediction of WS theory. - **Forward transition point**: The forward transition point depends on the coupling strength, and its upper bound is given. ### Application prospects This research reveals the essence of the explosive synchronization phenomenon in star networks coupled through hub nodes, providing a theoretical basis for understanding the synchronization behavior in complex networks. These findings not only help to deeply understand the synchronization phenomena in nature and engineering systems, but also may be applied in fields such as power systems and communication networks. ### Formula summary 1. **Kuramoto oscillator model equation**: \[ \dot{\phi}_j=\omega+\lambda_1\sin(\phi_h - \phi_j),\quad1\leq j\leq N_1 \] \[ \frac{1}{\beta}\dot{\phi}_h=\omega+\frac{\lambda_1}{N_1}\sum_{j = 1}^{N_1}\sin(\phi_j-\phi_h)+\epsilon\sin(\phi'_h-\phi_h) \] 2. **Global order parameter**: \[ R=\left|\frac{1}{N}\sum_{j = 1}^N e^{i\phi_j}\right| \] 3. **Hysteresis width**: \[ \text{Hysteresis width}=\lambda_f^c-\lambda_b^c \] 4. **Reverse transition point**: \[ \lambda_b^c=\frac{\omega(\beta - 1)}{\beta + 1} \] 5. **Upper bound of forward transition point**: \[ \lambda_f^c=\frac{\beta\epsilon\pm\omega(\beta - 1)}{\sqrt{2\beta + 1}} \] Through these formulas and analyses, the authors have explored in detail the explosive synchronization phenomenon in coupled star networks and the mechanisms behind it.
