Abstract:Abstract We show that Artin–Schelter regularity of a $\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebra can be examined by its associated $\mathbb{Z}$r-graded algebra. We prove that there is exactly one class of four-dimensional Artin–Schelter regular algebras with two generators of degree one in the Jordan type. This class is strongly noetherian, Auslander regular, and Cohen–Macaulay. Their automorphisms and point modules are described.

This is a complete list of AS regular algebras of global dimension 4 which are generated by two elements of degree 1 and whose Ext-algebra satisfies certain “generic” conditions. Abstract:A fruitful contemporary paradigm in graph theory is that almost all graphs that do not contain a certain subgraph have common structural characteristics. The "almost" is crucial, without it there is no structure. In this paper we transfer this paradigm to commutative algebra and make use of deep graph theoretic results. A key tool are the critical graphs introduced by Balogh and Butterfield. We consider edge ideals $I_G$ of graphs and their Betti numbers. The numbers of the form $\beta_{i,2i+2}$ constitute the "main diagonal" of the Betti table. It is well known that any Betti number $\beta_{i,j}(I_G)$ below (or equivalently, to the left of) this diagonal is always zero. We identify a certain "parabola" inside the Betti table and call parabolic Betti numbers the entries of the Betti table bounded on the left by the main diagonal and on the right by this parabola. Let $\beta_{i,j}$ be a parabolic Betti number on the $r$-th row of the Betti table, for $r\ge3$. Our main results state that almost all graphs $G$ with $\beta_{i,j}(I_G)=0$ can be partitioned into $r-2$ cliques and one independent set, and in particular for almost all graphs $G$ with $\beta_{i,j}(I_G)=0$ the regularity of $I_G$ is $r-1$.

Let $\delta(G), \Delta(G)$, $\alpha(G)$ and $\mu(G)$ denotes minimum degree, maximum degree, independence number and matching number of $G$, respectively. Recently, Caro, Davila and Pepper proved $\delta(G)\alpha(G)\leq \Delta(G)\mu(G)$. Mohr and Rautenbach characterized the extremal graphs for non-regular graphs and 3-regular graphs. In this note, we characterize the extremal graphs for all $r$-regular graphs in term of Gallai-Edmonds Structure Theorem, which extends Mohr and Rautenbach's result.

Abstract:Let $K[G]$ denote the edge ring of a finite connected simple graph $G$ on $[d]$ and $\mat(G)$ the matching number of $G$. It is shown that $\reg(K[G]) \leq \mat(G)$ if $G$ is non-bipartite and $K[G]$ is normal, and that $\reg(K[G]) \leq \mat(G) - 1$ if $G$ is bipartite.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the conjectured upper bound for Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of binomial edge ideals posed in [23], in the case of chordal graphs. Indeed, we show that the regularity of any chordal graph G is bounded above by the number of maximal cliques of G, denoted by c(G). Moreover, we classify all chordal graphs G for which L(G) = c(G), where L(G) is the sum of the lengths of longest induced paths of connected components of G. We call such graphs strongly interval graphs. Moreover, we show that the regularity of a strongly interval graph G coincides with L(G) as well as c(G).

Abstract:We determine the defining equations of the Rees algebra and of the special fiber ring of the ideal of maximal minors of a 2 × n 2\times n sparse matrix. We prove that their initial algebras are ladder determinantal rings. This allows us to show that the Rees algebra and the special fiber ring are Cohen-Macaulay domains, they are Koszul, they have rational singularities in characteristic zero and are F-rational in positive characteristic.

Abstract:In this thesis we are interested in studying algebraic properties of monomial algebras, that can be linked to combinatorial structures, such as graphs and clutters, and to optimization problems. A goal here is to establish bridges between commutative algebra, combinatorics and optimization. We study the normality and the Gorenstein property-as well as the canonical module and the a-invariant-of Rees algebras and subrings arising from linear optimization problems. In particular, we study algebraic properties of edge ideals and algebras associated to uniform clutters with the max-flow min-cut property or the packing property. We also study algebraic properties of symbolic Rees algebras of edge ideals of graphs, edge ideals of clique clutters of comparability graphs, and Stanley-Reisner rings.

Abstract:Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma is a very useful tool of extremal combinatorics. Recently, several refinements of this seminal result were obtained for special, more structured classes of graphs. We survey these results in their rich combinatorial context. In particular, we stress the link to the theory of (structural) sparsity, which leads to alternative proofs, refinements and solutions of open problems. It is interesting to note that many of these classes present challenging problems. Nevertheless, from the point of view of regularity lemma type statements, they appear as ``gentle'' classes.

Abstract:A graph $\Gamma$ is said to be a semi-Cayley graph over a group $G$ if it admits $G$ as a semiregular automorphism group with two orbits of equal size. We say that $\Gamma$ is normal if $G$ is a normal subgroup of ${\rm Aut}(\Gamma)$. We prove that every connected intransitive one-matching semi-Cayley graph, with maximum degree three, over a finite abelian group is normal and characterize all such non-normal graphs.
