Abstract:We define variational properties for dynamical systems with subexponential complexity, and study these properties in certain specific examples. By computing the value of slow entropy directly, we show that some subshifts are not variational, while a class of interval exchange transformations are variational.

Abstract:The notion of slow entropy, both upper and lower slow entropy, was defined by Katok and Thouvenot as a more refined measure of complexity for dynamical systems, than the classical Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy. For any subexponential rate function $a_n(t)$, we prove there exists a generic class of invertible measure preserving systems such that the lower slow entropy is zero and the upper slow entropy is infinite. Also, given any subexponential rate $a_n(t)$, we show there exists a rigid, weak mixing, invertible system such that the lower slow entropy is infinite with respect to $a_n(t)$. This gives a general solution to a question on the existence of rigid transformations with positive polynomial upper slow entropy, Finally, we connect slow entropy with the notion of entropy covergence rate presented by Blume. In particular, we show slow entropy is a strictly stronger notion of complexity and give examples which have zero upper slow entropy, but also have an arbitrary sublinear positive entropy convergence rate.

Abstract:Measure-theoretic and topological entropy are classical invariants in the theory of dynamical systems. There are several recently developed entropy type invariants for systems of sub-exponential growth: sequence entropy, slow entropy, Kakutani invariants, scaled entropy, entropy dimensions and entropy convergence rate. They measure the complexity of zero entropy systems by different approaches. These new invariants and corresponding new theories have many applications and interesting properties. This survey paper gives a comprehensive exposition of the slow entropy theory and also discusses some related topics.

Abstract:We consider dynamical systems for which the spatial extension plays an important role. For these systems, the notions of attractor, epsilon-entropy and topological entropy per unit time and volume have been introduced previously. In this paper we use the notion of Kolmogorov complexity to introduce, for extended dynamical systems, a notion of complexity per unit time and volume which plays the same role as the metric entropy for classical dynamical systems. We introduce this notion as an almost sure limit on orbits of the system. Moreover we prove a kind of variational principle for this complexity.

Entropy maximization in the two-dimensional Euler equations

Abstract:We consider variational problem related to entropy maximization in the two-dimensional Euler equations, in order to investigate the long-time dynamics of solutions with bounded vorticity. Using variations on the classical min-max principle and borrowing ideas from optimal transportation and quantitative rearrangement inequalities, we prove results on the structure of entropy maximizers arising in the investigation of the long-time behavior of vortex patches. We further show that the same techniques apply in the study of stability of the canonical Gibbs measure associated to a system of point vortices.

Abstract:In [BGH] the authors show that for a given topological dynamical system ( X,T ) and an open cover u there is an invariant measure μ such that inf h μ ( T ,ℙ)≥ h top ( T,U ) where infimum is taken over all partitions finer than u . We prove in this paper that if μ is an invariant measure and h μ ( T ,ℙ) > 0 for each ℙ finer than u , then inf h μ ( T ,ℙ > 0 and h top ( T,U ) > 0. The results are applied to study the topological analogue of the Kolmogorov system in ergodic theory, namely uniform positive entropy (u.p.e.) of order n ( n ≥2) or u.p.e. of all orders. We show that for each n ≥2 the set of all topological entropy n -tuples is the union of the set of entropy n -tuples for an invariant measure over all invariant measures. Characterizations of positive entropy, u.p.e. of order n and u.p.e. of all orders are obtained. We could answer several open questions concerning the nature of u.p.e. and c.p.e.. Particularly, we show that u.p.e. of order n does not imply u.p.e. of order n +1 for each n ≥2. Applying the methods and results obtained in the paper, we show that u.p.e. (of order 2) system is weakly disjoint from all transitive systems, and the product of u.p.e. of order n (resp. of all orders) systems is again u.p.e. of order n (resp. of all orders).

Abstract:It is shown that in a topological dynamical system with positive entropy, there is a measure-theoretically “rather big” set such that a multivariant version of mean Li–Yorke chaos happens on the closure of the stable or unstable set of any point from the set. It is also proved that the intersections of the sets of asymptotic tuples and mean Li–Yorke tuples with the set of topological entropy tuples are dense in the set of topological entropy tuples respectively.

Abstract:We prove a weak iterated invariance principle for a large class of non-uniformly expanding random dynamical systems. In addition, we give a quenched homogenization result for fast-slow systems in the case when the fast component corresponds to a uniformly expanding random system. Our techniques rely on the appropriate martingale decomposition.

Abstract:The topological entropy of a topological dynamical system, introduced in a foundational paper by Adler, Konheim and McAndrew [Trans. Am. Math. Soc., 1965], is a nonnegative number that measures the uncertainty or disorder of the system. Comparing with positive entropy systems, zero entropy systems are much less understood. In order to distinguish between zero entropy systems, Huang and Ye [Adv. Math., 2009] introduced the concept of maximal pattern entropy of a topological dynamical system. At the heart of their analysis is a Sauer-Shelah type lemma. In the present paper, we provide a shorter and more conceptual proof of a strengthening of this lemma, and discuss its surprising connection between dynamical system, combinatorics and a recent breakthrough in communication complexity. We also improve one of the main results of Huang and Ye on the maximal pattern entropy of zero-dimensional systems, by proving a new Sauer-Shelah type lemma, which unifies and enhances various extremal results on VC-dimension, Natarajan dimension and Steele dimension.

Remarkable Evolutionary Laws of Absolute and Relative Entropies with Dynamical Systems

Abstract:The evolution of entropy is derived with respect to dynamical systems. For a stochastic system, its relative entropy $D$ evolves in accordance with the second law of thermodynamics; its absolute entropy $H$ may also be so, provided that the stochastic perturbation is additive and the flow of the vector field is nondivergent. For a deterministic system, $dH/dt$ is equal to the mathematical expectation of the divergence of the flow (a result obtained before), and, remarkably, $dD/dt = 0$. That is to say, relative entropy is always conserved. So, for a nonlinear system, though the trajectories of the state variables, say $\ve x$, may appear chaotic in the phase space, say $\Omega$, those of the density function $\rho(\ve x)$ in the new ``phase space'' $L^1(\Omega)$ are not; the corresponding Lyapunov exponent is always zero. This result is expected to have important implications for the ensemble predictions in many applied fields, and may help to analyze chaotic data sets.

Abstract:. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, we study topological and measure-theoretical entropies of a nonautonomous dynamical system via the ideas of local entropy theory. We prove local and global variational inequalities in Theorem 3.5, which relates to the topological entropy of a nonautonomous dynamical system to its measure-theoretical entropy. Consequently, we answer affirmatively the second part of [26, Question 3.7] asked by Zhu et al. in 2012. We also show that, in general, the answer to the first part of [26, Question 3.7] is negative. In the second part, we introduce weak expansiveness for a nonautonomous system following the ideas of Bowen [4] and Misiurewicz [15]. For further understanding of the weak expansiveness of a nonautonomous system, we also introduce and study the concept of topological conditional entropy for such class of dynamical system along the lines of Misiurewicz [17]. We give a simple link relating weak expansiveness of a nonautonomous system to its topological conditional entropy. We end this paper with Question 4.8 for further understanding these concepts of a nonautonomous system.

Abstract:We present a general definition of entropy in the setting of pre-ordered semigroups, extending the notion of topological entropy. From our definition, we obtain the basic properties exhibited by various entropy-like theories encountered in the literature, many of them being particular cases of our scheme. We show how to derive from the properties of the abstract entropy corresponding properties in the concrete cases. We also introduce a notion of expansiveness in this general context, extending the concept of expansive dynamical system, which is related to the entropy in a similar fashion as in the case of topological dynamics. Finally, as an application, we suggest some definitions of new entropies and expansiveness in concrete cases.

Abstract:The limit of small entropy production is reached in relaxing systems long after preparation, and in stationary driven systems in the limit of small driving power. Surprisingly, for extended systems this limit is not in general the Gibbs-Boltzmann distribution, or a small departure from it. Interesting cases in which it is not are glasses, phase-separation, and certain driven complex fluids. We describe a scenario with several coexisting temperatures acting on different timescales, and partial equilibrations at each time scale. This scenario entails strong modifications of the fluctuation-dissipation equalities and the existence of some unexpected reciprocity relations. Both predictions are open to experimental verification, particularly the latter. The construction is consistent in general, since it can be viewed as the breaking of a symmetry down to a residual group. It does not assume the presence of quenched disorder. It can be -- and to a certain extent has been -- tested numerically, while some experiments are on their way. There is furthermore the perspective that analytic arguments may be constructed to prove or disprove its generality.

Abstract:The repetition property of a dynamical system, a notion introduced in Boshernitzan and Damanik (Commun Math Phys 283:647–662, 2008), plays an importance role in analyzing spectral properties of ergodic Schrödinger operators. In this paper, entropy of dynamical systems with repetition property is investigated. It is shown that the topological entropy of dynamical systems with the global repetition property is zero. Minimal dynamical systems having both topological repetition property and positive topological entropy are constructed. This provides a class of ergodic Schrödinger operators with potentials generated by positive entropy minimal dynamical systems that, in contrast to common beliefs, admit no eigenvalues.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive introduction and systematic derivation of the evolutionary equations for absolute entropy H and relative entropy D, some of which exist sporadically in the literature in different forms under different subjects, within the framework of dynamical systems. In general, both H and D are dissipated, and the dissipation bears a form reminiscent of the Fisher information; in the absence of stochasticity, dH/dt is connected to the rate of phase space expansion, and D stays invariant, i.e., the separation of two probability density functions is always conserved. These formulas are validated with linear systems, and put to application with the Lorenz system and a large-dimensional stochastic quasi-geostrophic flow problem. In the Lorenz case, H falls at a constant rate with time, implying that H will eventually become negative, a situation beyond the capability of the commonly used computational technique like coarse-graining and bin counting. For the stochastic flow problem, it is first reduced to a computationally tractable low-dimensional system, using a reduced model approach, and then handled through ensemble prediction. Both the Lorenz system and the stochastic flow system are examples of self-organization in the light of uncertainty reduction. The latter particularly shows that, sometimes stochasticity may actually enhance the self-organization process.
