Abstract:We study learning-augmented binary search trees (BSTs) and B-Trees via Treaps with composite priorities. The result is a simple search tree where the depth of each item is determined by its predicted weight $w_x$. To achieve the result, each item $x$ has its composite priority $-\lfloor\log\log(1/w_x)\rfloor + U(0, 1)$ where $U(0, 1)$ is the uniform random variable. This generalizes the recent learning-augmented BSTs [Lin-Luo-Woodruff ICML`22], which only work for Zipfian distributions, to arbitrary inputs and predictions. It also gives the first B-Tree data structure that can provably take advantage of localities in the access sequence via online self-reorganization. The data structure is robust to prediction errors and handles insertions, deletions, as well as prediction updates.

Abstract:A treap is a classic randomized binary search tree data structure that is easy to implement and supports O(\log n) expected time access. However, classic treaps do not take advantage of the input distribution or patterns in the input. Given recent advances in algorithms with predictions, we propose pairing treaps with machine advice to form a learning-augmented treap. We are the first to propose a learning-augmented data structure that supports binary search tree operations such as range-query and successor functionalities. With the assumption that we have access to advice from a frequency estimation oracle, we assign learned priorities to the nodes to better improve the treap's structure. We theoretically analyze the learning-augmented treap's performance under various input distributions and show that under those circumstances, our learning-augmented treap has stronger guarantees than classic treaps and other classic tree-based data structures. Further, we experimentally evaluate our learned treap on synthetic datasets and demonstrate a performance advantage over other search tree data structures. We also present experiments on real world datasets with known frequency estimation oracles and show improvements as well.

Abstract:Data augmentation is widely used for training a neural network given little labeled data. A common practice of augmentation training is applying a composition of multiple transformations sequentially to the data. Existing augmentation methods such as RandAugment randomly sample from a list of pre-selected transformations, while methods such as AutoAugment apply advanced search to optimize over an augmentation set of size $k^d$, which is the number of transformation sequences of length $d$, given a list of $k$ transformations. In this paper, we design efficient algorithms whose running time complexity is much faster than the worst-case complexity of $O(k^d)$, provably. We propose a new algorithm to search for a binary tree-structured composition of $k$ transformations, where each tree node corresponds to one transformation. The binary tree generalizes sequential augmentations, such as the SimCLR augmentation scheme for contrastive learning. Using a top-down, recursive search procedure, our algorithm achieves a runtime complexity of $O(2^d k)$, which is much faster than $O(k^d)$ as $k$ increases above $2$. We apply our algorithm to tackle data distributions with heterogeneous subpopulations by searching for one tree in each subpopulation and then learning a weighted combination, resulting in a forest of trees. We validate our proposed algorithms on numerous graph and image datasets, including a multi-label graph classification dataset we collected. The dataset exhibits significant variations in the sizes of graphs and their average degrees, making it ideal for studying data augmentation. We show that our approach can reduce the computation cost by 43% over existing search methods while improving performance by 4.3%. The tree structures can be used to interpret the relative importance of each transformation, such as identifying the important transformations on small vs. large graphs.

A Template for Implementing Fast Lock-free Trees Using HTM

Abstract:Algorithms that use hardware transactional memory (HTM) must provide a software-only fallback path to guarantee progress. The design of the fallback path can have a profound impact on performance. If the fallback path is allowed to run concurrently with hardware transactions, then hardware transactions must be instrumented, adding significant overhead. Otherwise, hardware transactions must wait for any processes on the fallback path, causing concurrency bottlenecks, or move to the fallback path. We introduce an approach that combines the best of both worlds. The key idea is to use three execution paths: an HTM fast path, an HTM middle path, and a software fallback path, such that the middle path can run concurrently with each of the other two. The fast path and fallback path do not run concurrently, so the fast path incurs no instrumentation overhead. Furthermore, fast path transactions can move to the middle path instead of waiting or moving to the software path. We demonstrate our approach by producing an accelerated version of the tree update template of Brown et al., which can be used to implement fast lock-free data structures based on down-trees. We used the accelerated template to implement two lock-free trees: a binary search tree (BST), and an (a,b)-tree (a generalization of a B-tree). Experiments show that, with 72 concurrent processes, our accelerated (a,b)-tree performs between 4.0x and 4.2x as many operations per second as an implementation obtained using the original tree update template.

Dynamic "Succincter"

Abstract:Augmented B-trees (aB-trees) are a broad class of data structures. The seminal work "succincter" by Patrascu showed that any aB-tree can be stored using only two bits of redundancy, while supporting queries to the tree in time proportional to its depth. It has been a versatile building block for constructing succinct data structures, including rank/select data structures, dictionaries, locally decodable arithmetic coding, storing balanced parenthesis, etc. In this paper, we show how to "dynamize" an aB-tree. Our main result is the design of dynamic aB-trees (daB-trees) with branching factor two using only three bits of redundancy (with the help of lookup tables that are of negligible size in applications), while supporting updates and queries in time polynomial in its depth. As an application, we present a dynamic rank/select data structure for $n$-bit arrays, also known as a dynamic fully indexable dictionary (FID). It supports updates and queries in $O(\log n/\log\log n)$ time, and when the array has $m$ ones, the data structure occupies \[ \log\binom{n}{m} + O(n/2^{\log^{0.199}n}) \] bits. Note that the update and query times are optimal even without space constraints due to a lower bound by Fredman and Saks. Prior to our work, no dynamic FID with near-optimal update and query times and redundancy $o(n/\log n)$ was known. We further show that a dynamic sequence supporting insertions, deletions and rank/select queries can be maintained in (optimal) $O(\log n/\log\log n)$ time and with $O(n \cdot \text{poly}\log\log n/\log^2 n)$ bits of redundancy.

DeltaTree: A Practical Locality-aware Concurrent Search Tree

Abstract:As other fundamental programming abstractions in energy-efficient computing, search trees are expected to support both high parallelism and data locality. However, existing highly-concurrent search trees such as red-black trees and AVL trees do not consider data locality while existing locality-aware search trees such as those based on the van Emde Boas layout (vEB-based trees), poorly support concurrent (update) operations. This paper presents DeltaTree, a practical locality-aware concurrent search tree that combines both locality-optimisation techniques from vEB-based trees and concurrency-optimisation techniques from non-blocking highly-concurrent search trees. DeltaTree is a $k$-ary leaf-oriented tree of DeltaNodes in which each DeltaNode is a size-fixed tree-container with the van Emde Boas layout. The expected memory transfer costs of DeltaTree's Search, Insert, and Delete operations are $O(\log_B N)$, where $N, B$ are the tree size and the unknown memory block size in the ideal cache model, respectively. DeltaTree's Search operation is wait-free, providing prioritised lanes for Search operations, the dominant operation in search trees. Its Insert and {\em Delete} operations are non-blocking to other Search, Insert, and Delete operations, but they may be occasionally blocked by maintenance operations that are sometimes triggered to keep DeltaTree in good shape. Our experimental evaluation using the latest implementation of AVL, red-black, and speculation friendly trees from the Synchrobench benchmark has shown that DeltaTree is up to 5 times faster than all of the three concurrent search trees for searching operations and up to 1.6 times faster for update operations when the update contention is not too high.

Task-based Augmented Contour Trees with Fibonacci Heaps

Abstract:This paper presents a new algorithm for the fast, shared memory, multi-core computation of augmented contour trees on triangulations. In contrast to most existing parallel algorithms our technique computes augmented trees, enabling the full extent of contour tree based applications including data segmentation. Our approach completely revisits the traditional, sequential contour tree algorithm to re-formulate all the steps of the computation as a set of independent local tasks. This includes a new computation procedure based on Fibonacci heaps for the join and split trees, two intermediate data structures used to compute the contour tree, whose constructions are efficiently carried out concurrently thanks to the dynamic scheduling of task parallelism. We also introduce a new parallel algorithm for the combination of these two trees into the output global contour tree. Overall, this results in superior time performance in practice, both in sequential and in parallel thanks to the OpenMP task runtime. We report performance numbers that compare our approach to reference sequential and multi-threaded implementations for the computation of augmented merge and contour trees. These experiments demonstrate the run-time efficiency of our approach and its scalability on common workstations. We demonstrate the utility of our approach in data segmentation applications.

Low-Latency Graph Streaming Using Compressed Purely-Functional Trees

Abstract:Due to the dynamic nature of real-world graphs, there has been a growing interest in the graph-streaming setting where a continuous stream of graph updates is mixed with arbitrary graph queries. In principle, purely-functional trees are an ideal choice for this setting due as they enable safe parallelism, lightweight snapshots, and strict serializability for queries. However, directly using them for graph processing would lead to significant space overhead and poor cache locality. This paper presents C-trees, a compressed purely-functional search tree data structure that significantly improves on the space usage and locality of purely-functional trees. The key idea is to use a chunking technique over trees in order to store multiple entries per tree-node. We design theoretically-efficient and practical algorithms for performing batch updates to C-trees, and also show that we can store massive dynamic real-world graphs using only a few bytes per edge, thereby achieving space usage close to that of the best static graph processing frameworks. To study the efficiency and applicability of our data structure, we designed Aspen, a graph-streaming framework that extends the interface of Ligra with operations for updating graphs. We show that Aspen is faster than two state-of-the-art graph-streaming systems, Stinger and LLAMA, while requiring less memory, and is competitive in performance with the state-of-the-art static graph frameworks, Galois, GAP, and Ligra+. With Aspen, we are able to efficiently process the largest publicly-available graph with over two hundred billion edges in the graph-streaming setting using a single commodity multicore server with 1TB of memory.

Abstract:Cryptography has been around for thousands of years. We propose a new cryptographic model, lock trees and key trees, and our idea differs from current graphical passwords in this paper. Graphs and their labellings are applied to establish the concepts of key-trees and lock-trees based on abundant of graphs having smaller orders and their corresponding double odd-edge labellings. We propose two methods, called Edge-Construction and Paste-Construction-w, to construct trees of larger orders by some smaller trees such that the new trees have some DOElabellings. Our results may be valued to information security and graph theory, at the end of this article we propose several conjectures.

Abstract:A key part of implementing high-level languages is providing built-in and default data structures. Yet selecting good defaults is hard. A mutable data structure's workload is not known in advance, and it may shift over its lifetime - e.g., between read-heavy and write-heavy, or from heavy contention by multiple threads to single-threaded or low-frequency use. One idea is to switch implementations adaptively, but it is nontrivial to switch the implementation of a concurrent data structure at runtime. Performing the transition requires a concurrent snapshot of data structure contents, which normally demands special engineering in the data structure's design. However, in this paper we identify and formalize an relevant property of lock-free algorithms. Namely, lock-freedom is sufficient to guarantee that freezing memory locations in an arbitrary order will result in a valid snapshot. Several functional languages have data structures that freeze and thaw, transitioning between mutable and immutable, such as Haskell vectors and Clojure transients, but these enable only single-threaded writers. We generalize this approach to augment an arbitrary lock-free data structure with the ability to gradually freeze and optionally transition to a new representation. This augmentation doesn't require changing the algorithm or code for the data structure, only replacing its datatype for mutable references with a freezable variant. In this paper, we present an algorithm for lifting plain to adaptive data and prove that the resulting hybrid data structure is itself lock-free, linearizable, and simulates the original. We also perform an empirical case study in the context of heating up and cooling down concurrent maps.

Cache-Friendly Search Trees; or, In Which Everything Beats std::set

Abstract:While a lot of work in theoretical computer science has gone into optimizing the runtime and space usage of data structures, such work very often neglects a very important component of modern computers: the cache. In doing so, very often, data structures are developed that achieve theoretically-good runtimes but are slow in practice due to a large number of cache misses. In 1999, Frigo et al. introduced the notion of a cache-oblivious algorithm: an algorithm that uses the cache to its advantage, regardless of the size or structure of said cache. Since then, various authors have designed cache-oblivious algorithms and data structures for problems from matrix multiplication to array sorting. We focus in this work on cache-oblivious search trees; i.e. implementing an ordered dictionary in a cache-friendly manner. We will start by presenting an overview of cache-oblivious data structures, especially cache-oblivious search trees. We then give practical results using these cache-oblivious structures on modern-day machinery, comparing them to the standard std::set and other cache-friendly dictionaries such as B-trees.

Building a Bw-Tree Takes More Than Just Buzz Words

Abstract:In 2013, Microsoft Research proposed the Bw-Tree (humorously termed the "Buzz Word Tree''), a lock-free index that provides high throughput for transactional database workloads in SQL Server's Hekaton engine. The Buzz Word Tree avoids locks by appending delta record to tree nodes and using an indirection layer that allows it to atomically update physical pointers using compare-and-swap (CaS). Correctly implementing this techniques requires careful attention to detail. Unfortunately, the Bw-Tree papers from Microsoft are missing important details and the source code has not been released. This paper has two contributions: First, it is the missing guide for how to build a lock-free Bw-Tree. We clarify missing points in Microsoft's original design documents and then present techniques to improve the index's performance. Although our focus here is on the Bw-Tree, many of our methods apply more broadly to designing and implementing future lock-free in-memory data structures. Our experimental evaluation shows that our optimized variant achieves 1.1--2.5× better performance than the original Microsoft proposal for highly concurrent workloads. Second, our evaluation shows that despite our improvements, the Bw-Tree still does not perform as well as other concurrent data structures that use locks.

Abstract:We propose a concurrent relaxed balance AVL tree algorithm that is fast, scales well, and tolerates contention. It is based on optimistic techniques adapted from software transactional memory, but takes advantage of specific knowledge of the the algorithm to reduce overheads and avoid unnecessary retries. We extend our algorithm with a fast linearizable clone operation, which can be used for consistent iteration of the tree. Experimental evidence shows that our algorithm outperforms a highly tuned concurrent skip list for many access patterns, with an average of 39% higher single-threaded throughput and 32% higher multi-threaded throughput over a range of contention levels and operation mixes.
B-Treaps Revised: Write Efficient Randomized Block Search Trees with High Load

Abstract:Uniquely represented data structures represent each logical state with a unique storage state. We study the problem of maintaining a dynamic set of $n$ keys from a totally ordered universe in this context. We introduce a two-layer data structure called $(\alpha,\varepsilon)$-Randomized Block Search Tree (RBST) that is uniquely represented and suitable for external memory. Though RBSTs naturally generalize the well-known binary Treaps, several new ideas are needed to analyze the {\em expected} search, update, and storage, efficiency in terms of block-reads, block-writes, and blocks stored. We prove that searches have $O(\varepsilon^{-1} + \log_\alpha n)$ block-reads, that $(\alpha, \varepsilon)$-RBSTs have an asymptotic load-factor of at least $(1-\varepsilon)$ for every $\varepsilon \in (0,1/2]$, and that dynamic updates perform $O(\varepsilon^{-1} + \log_\alpha(n)/\alpha)$ block-writes, i.e. $O(1/\varepsilon)$ writes if $\alpha=\Omega(\frac{\log n}{\log \log n} )$. Thus $(\alpha, \varepsilon)$-RBSTs provide improved search, storage-, and write-efficiency bounds in regard to the known, uniquely represented B-Treap [Golovin; ICALP'09].

Verifying Lock-free Search Structure Templates

Abstract:We present and verify template algorithms for lock-free concurrent search structures that cover a broad range of existing implementations based on lists and skiplists. Our linearizability proofs are fully mechanized in the concurrent separation logic Iris. The proofs are modular and cover the broader design space of the underlying algorithms by parameterizing the verification over aspects such as the low-level representation of nodes and the style of data structure maintenance. As a further technical contribution, we present a mechanization of a recently proposed method for reasoning about future-dependent linearization points using hindsight arguments. The mechanization builds on Iris' support for prophecy reasoning and user-defined ghost resources. We demonstrate that the method can help to reduce the proof effort compared to direct prophecy-based proofs.

Wait-Free Updates and Range Search using Uruv

Abstract:CRUD operations, along with range queries make a highly useful abstract data type (ADT), employed by many dynamic analytics tasks. Despite its wide applications, to our knowledge, no fully wait-free data structure is known to support this ADT. In this paper, we introduce Uruv, a proactive linearizable and practical wait-free concurrent data structure that implements the ADT mentioned above. Structurally, Uruv installs a balanced search index on the nodes of a linked list. Uruv is the first wait-free and proactive solution for concurrent B+tree. Experiments show that Uruv significantly outperforms previously proposed lock-free B+trees for dictionary operations and a recently proposed lock-free method to implement the ADT mentioned above.

Abstract:Tree structures are used extensively in domains such as XML data management, web log analysis, biological computing, and so on. In this paper we introduce the problem of mining frequent sequential trees in a large tree sequence database. We present a framework for mining frequent sequential trees in a so-called tree sequence database. Basically, this framework employs a transformation-based approach which converts the sequential tree mining problem into a traditional sequence mining problem. Our approach firstly mines frequent trees in the tree sequence database. Secondly, we perform a database transformation by means of tree-containment computation to generate a sequence database. Thirdly, after the transformation, frequent sequence patterns can be mined in the newly created sequence database using a conventional sequence mining technique. Finally we perform an inverted transformation process on the output of sequence mining to obtain sequential tree patterns. Experimental results on synthetic datasets show that the proposed framework is both effective and efficient in finding frequent sequential trees in a large tree sequence database.

Abstract:The Block Tree (BT) is a novel compact data structure designed to compress sequence collections. It obtains compression ratios close to Lempel-Ziv and supports efficient direct access to any substring. The BT divides the text recursively into fixed-size blocks and those appearing earlier are represented with pointers. On repetitive collections, a few blocks can represent all the others, and thus the BT reduces the size by orders of magnitude. In this paper we extend the BT to two dimensions, to exploit repetitiveness in collections of images, graphs, and maps. This two-dimensional Block Tree divides the image regularly into subimages and replaces some of them by pointers to other occurrences thereof. We develop a specific variant aimed at compressing the adjacency matrices of Web graphs, obtaining space reductions of up to 50\% compared with the $k^2$-tree, which is the best alternative supporting direct and reverse navigation in the graph.

Abstract:Building concurrent spatial trees is more complicated than binary search trees since a space hierarchy should be preserved during modifications. We present a non-blocking quadtree-quadboost-that supports concurrent insert, remove, move, and contain operations. To increase its concurrency, we propose a decoupling approach that separates physical adjustment from logical removal within the remove operation. In addition, we design a continuous find mechanism to reduce its search cost. The move operation combines the searches for different keys together and modifies different positions with atomicity. The experimental results show that quadboost scales well on a multi-core system with 32 hardware threads. More than that, it outperforms existing concurrent trees in retrieving two-dimensional keys with up to 109 number of threads is large. The move operation proved to perform better than the best-known algorithm, with up to 47

Abstract:Abstract Temporal graphs represent interactions between entities over time. Deciding whether entities can reach each other through temporal paths is useful for various applications such as in communication networks and epidemiology. Previous works have studied the scenario in which addition of new interactions can happen at any point in time. A known strategy maintains, incrementally, a Timed Transitive Closure using a dynamic data structure composed of $O(n^{2})$ binary search trees containing non-nested time intervals. However, space usage for storing these trees grows rapidly as more interactions are inserted. In this paper, we introduce a compact data structure that represents each tree as two dynamic bit-vectors. Furthermore, we present two variants of this data structure: one representing bits in dynamic bit-vectors explicitly and the other representing only the active bits by encoding their consecutive distances. In our experiments, we observed that our data structure improves space usage while having similar time performance for incremental updates when comparing with the previous strategy. The first variant of our data structure gives the best space improvement when constructing Time Transitive Closures for temporally dense temporal graphs, and the second variant uses less space for temporally sparse temporal graphs.
