Abstract:The gravitational path integral is usually implemented with a covariant action by analogy with other gauge field theories, but the gravitational case is different in important ways. A key difference is that the integrand has an essential singularity, which occurs at zero lapse where the spacetime metric degenerates. The lapse integration contour required to impose the local time reparametrization constraints must run from $-\infty$ to $+\infty$, yet must not pass through zero. This raises the question: what is the correct integration contour, and why? We study that question by starting with the reduced phase space path integral, which involves no essential singularity. We observe that if the momenta are to be integrated before the lapse, to obtain a configuration space path integral, the lapse contour should pass below the origin in the complex lapse plane. This contour is also consistent with the requirement that quantum field fluctuation amplitudes have the usual short distance vacuum form, and with obtaining the Bekenstein-Hawking horizon entropy from a Lorentzian path integral. We close with a discussion of related issues, including potential obstacles to deriving a nonperturbative covariant gravitational path integral.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to correctly handle the local time reparametrization constraints in the gravitational path integral, especially regarding the contour of integration of the lapse function. In the theory of gravity, the lapse function \(N\) is a key variable, which appears as a Lagrange multiplier in the action to impose the Hamiltonian constraint. However, the lapse function has an essential singularity at \(N = 0\), which makes it very complicated to select an appropriate contour of integration in the path integral. Specifically, the paper explores the following issues: 1. **Selection of the contour of integration**: How to select the contour of integration of the lapse function \(N\) to avoid the essential singularity at \(N = 0\) and correctly impose the time reparametrization constraint? 2. **Influence of the order of integration**: In the path integral, what is the influence on the final result of integrating the momenta first or integrating the lapse function first? 3. **Consistency with physical phenomena**: Can the selected contour of integration be consistent with known physical phenomena (such as the Bekenstein - Hawking formula for black hole entropy)? The paper studies the problem of the contour of integration of the lapse function by starting from the reduced phase - space path integral. The author finds that if the momenta are integrated first in the path integral, then the contour of integration of the lapse function should bypass the origin in the complex plane, that is, integrate along the lower part of the real axis in the complex plane. This choice can not only avoid the essential singularity, but also meet the short - distance vacuum form requirements of the quantum field fluctuation amplitude, and can obtain the correct Bekenstein - Hawking entropy from the Lorentz path integral. In summary, the main objective of this paper is to determine the correct contour of integration of the lapse function in the gravitational path integral through strict mathematical derivations, thereby providing a theoretical basis for the study of non - perturbative quantum gravity.
