Abstract:In the present paper, we construct $(2n-4)\times (2n-4)$ matrices corresponding to the motion of points on standard round sphere from the point of view of Delaunay triangulations. We define homomorphism from spherical pure braids on $n$ strands to the product of these matrices for $n>5$.

Abstract:Let N be the moduli space of stable rank 2 vector bundles on a smooth projective curve of genus g>1 with fixed odd determinant. With Sebastian Torres, we previously found a semi-orthogonal decomposition of the bounded derived category of N into bounded derived categories of symmetric powers of the curve and, possibly, a phantom block. In this work, we employ the theory of weaving patterns to eliminate the possibility of a phantom, completing the proof of the decomposition conjectured by Narasimhan and, independently, by Belmans, Galkin, and Mukhopadhyay.

Numerical invariants of normed matrix factorizations

Abstract:We define a normed matrix factorization category and a notion of bounding cochains for objects of this category. We classify bounding cochains up to gauge equivalence for spherical objects and use this classification to define numerical invariants. These invariants are expected to correspond under mirror symmetry to the open Gromov-Witten invariants with only boundary constraints of Lagrangian rational cohomology spheres defined by the second author and Tukachinsky. For each Delzant polytope, we construct a normed matrix factorization category. For Delzant polytopes satisfying a combinatorial relative spin condition, we construct an object of this category called the Dirac factorization. The Dirac factorization is expected to correspond under mirror symmetry to the Lagrangian submanifold given by the real locus of the toric symplectic manifold associated to the Delzant polytope. In the case of the $n$-simplex for $n$ odd, we show that the Dirac factorization is spherical, mirroring the fact that $\mathbb{R} P^n$ is a rational cohomology sphere. For $n = 1,$ we show the numerical invariants of the Dirac factorization coincide with the open Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb{R} P^1 \subset \mathbb{C} P^1.$ For $n = 3$ in low degrees, computer calculations verify that the numerical invariants of the Dirac factorization coincide with the open Gromov-Witten-Welschinger invariants of $\mathbb{R}P^3 \subset \mathbb{C} P^3.$ Although $\mathbb{R} P^n$ is trivial in the Fukaya category of $\mathbb{C} P^n$ over any field of characteristic zero, the above results can be seen as a manifestation of mirror symmetry over a Novikov ring.

Abstract:We introduce a family of groups $\Gamma_n^k$ for integer parameters $n>k$. These groups originate from discussion of braid groups on $2$-surfaces. On the other hand, they turn out to be related to 3-manifolds (in particular, they lead to new relationships between braids and manifolds), triangulations (ideal triangulations) cluster algebras, dynamics of moving points, quivers, hyperbolic structures, tropical geometry, and, probably, many other areas still to be discovered. Among crucial reason of this importance of groups $\Gamma_{n}^{4}$ we mention the Ptolemy relation, Pentagon relation, cluster algebra, Stasheff polytope.

Abstract:We compute the Bieri-Neumann-Strebel invariants Σ1 for the full and pure braid groups of the sphere S2 , the real projective plane RP2 , the torus T and the Klein bottle K . For M=T or M=K , n≥2 , we show that the action by homeomorphisms of Out(Pn(M)) on S(Pn(M)) contains certain permutations, under which Σ1(Pn(M))c is invariant. Furthermore, Σ1(Pn(T))c , and Σ1(Pn(S2))c (with n≥5 ) are finite unions of circles, and Σ1(Pn(K))c is finite. This implies the existence of H⏧Aut(Pn(K)) with |Aut(Pn(K)):H|<∞ such that R(φ)=∞ for every φ∈H .

When Grünbaum meets Poncelet -- Infinite Classes of Movable $n_4$ Configurations

Abstract:We study relations between $(n_4)$ incidence configurations and the classical Poncelet Porism. Poncelet's result studies two conics and a sequence of points and lines that inscribes one conic and circumscribes the other. Poncelet's Porism states that whether this sequence closes up after $m$ steps only depends on the conics and not on the initial point of the sequence. In other words: Poncelet polygons are movable. We transfer this motion into a flexibility statement about a large class of $(n_4)$ configurations, which are configurations where 4 (straight) lines pass through each point and four points lie on each line. A first instance of such configurations in real geometry had been given by Grünbaum and Rigby in their classical 1990 paper where they constructed the first known real geometric realisation of a well known combinatorial $(21_4)$ configuration (which had been studied by Felix Klein), now called the Grünbaum-Rigby configuration. Since then, there has been an intensive search for movable $(n_4)$ configurations, but it is very surprising that the Grünbaum-Rigby $(21_4)$ configuration admits nontrivial motions. It is well-known that the Grünbaum-Rigby configuration is the smallest example of an infinite class of $(n_4)$ configurations, the trivial celestial configurations. A major result of this paper is that we show that all trivial celestial configurations are movable via Poncelet's Porism and results about properties of Poncelet grids. Alternative approaches via geometry of billiards, in-circle nets, and pentagram maps that relate the subject to discrete integrable systems are given as well.

Abstract:We show that the group cohomology of the diffeomorphisms of the disk with $n$ punctures has the cohomology of the braid group of $n$ strands as the summand. As an application of this method, we also prove that there is no cohomological obstruction to lifting the "standard" embedding $\mathrm{Br}_{2g+2}\hookrightarrow \mathrm{Mod}_{g,2}$ to a group homomorphism between diffeomorphism groups.

Abstract:Twin groups and virtual twin groups are planar analogues of braid groups and virtual braid groups, respectively. These groups play the role of braid groups in the Alexander-Markov correspondence for the theory of stable isotopy classes of immersed circles on orientable surfaces. Motivated by the general idea of Artin and a recent work of Bellingeri and Paris \cite{BellingeriParis2020}, we obtain a complete description of homomorphisms between virtual twin groups and symmetric groups, which as an application gives us the precise structure of the automorphism group of the virtual twin group $VT_n$ on $n \ge 2$ strands. This is achieved by showing the existence of an irreducible right-angled Coxeter group $KT_n$ inside $VT_n$. As a by-product, it also follows that the twin group $T_n$ embeds inside the virtual twin group $VT_n$, which is an analogue of a similar result for braid groups.

Abstract:We study the moduli spaces of polygons in R^2 and R^3, identifying them with subquotients of 2-Grassmannians using a symplectic version of the Gel'fand-MacPherson correspondence. We show that the bending flows defined by Kapovich-Millson arise as a reduction of the Gel'fand-Cetlin system on the Grassmannian, and with these determine the pentagon and hexagon spaces up to equivariant symplectomorphism. Other than invocation of Delzant's theorem, our proofs are purely polygon-theoretic in nature.

Abstract:We classify homomorphisms from the braid group on $n$ strands to the pure mapping class group of a nonoriantable surface of genus $g$. For $n\ge 14$ and $g\le 2\lfloor{n/2}\rfloor+1$ every such homomorphism is either cyclic, or it maps standard generators of the braid group to either distinct Dehn twists, or distinct crosscap transpositions, possibly multiplied by the same element of the centralizer of the image.

Abstract:In studying the "11/8-Conjecture" on the Geography Problem in 4-dimensional topology, Furuta proposed a question on the existence of Pin(2)-equivariant stable maps between certain representation spheres. In this paper, we present a complete solution to this problem by analyzing the Pin(2)-equivariant Mahowald invariants. As a geometric application of our result, we prove a "10/8+4"-Theorem. We prove our theorem by analyzing maps between certain finite spectra arising from BPin(2) and various Thom spectra associated with it. To analyze these maps, we use the technique of cell diagrams, known results on the stable homotopy groups of spheres, and the j-based Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence.

Abstract:We study the geometric structure of Poncelet $n$-gons from a projective point of view. In particular we present explicit constructions of Poncelet $n$-gons for certain $n$ and derive algebraic characterisations in terms of bracket polynomials. Via the connections of Poncelet polygons and $(N_4)$-configurations, the results of this article can be used to construct a large class of specific movable $(N_4)$-configurations, the trivial celestial 4-configurations, which up to this point were all thought to be rigid and to require regular polygons for their construction.

Abstract:We present a computationally efficient algorithm that is suitable for graphic processing unit implementation. This algorithm enables the identification of all weak pseudo-manifolds that meet specific facet conditions, drawn from a given input set. We employ this approach to enumerate toric colorable seeds. Consequently, we achieve a comprehensive characterization of $(n-1)$-dimensional PL spheres with $n+4$ vertices that possess a maximal Buchstaber number. A primary focus of this research is the fundamental categorization of non-singular complete toric varieties of Picard number $4$. This classification serves as a valuable tool for addressing questions related to toric manifolds of Picard number $4$. Notably, we have determined which of these manifolds satisfy equality within an inequality regarding the number of minimal components in their rational curve space. This addresses a question posed by Chen, Fu, and Hwang in 2014 for this specific case.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to describe connections between the loop space of the 2-sphere, Artin's braid groups, a choice of simplicial group whose homotopy groups are given by modules called Lie(n), as well as work of Milnor, and Habegger-Lin on "homotopy string links". The current article exploits Lie algebras associated to Vassiliev invariants in work of T. Kohno, and provides connections between these various topics. Two consequences are as follows: 1) the homotopy groups of spheres are identified as "natural" sub-quotients of free products of pure braid groups, and 2) an axiomatization of certain simplicial groups arising from braid groups is shown to characterize the homotopy types of connected $CW$-complexes.

Abstract:Area and orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of the standard 2-disc, referred to as symplectomorphisms of $\mathbb{D}^{2}$, allow decompositions in terms of positive twist diffeomorphisms. Using the latter decomposition we utilize the Conley index theory of discrete braid classes as introduced in [Ghrist et al., C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris Sér. I Math., 331(11), 2000, Invent. Math., 152(2), 2003] in order to obtain a Morse type forcing theory of periodic points: a priori information about periodic points determines a mapping class which may force additional periodic points.

New perspectives on categorical Torelli theorems for del Pezzo threefolds

Abstract:Let $Y_d$ be a del Pezzo threefold of Picard rank one and degree $d\geq 2$. In this paper, we apply two different viewpoints to study $Y_d$ via a particular admissible subcategory of its bounded derived category, called the Kuznetsov component: (i) Brill-Noether reconstruction. We show that $Y_d$ can be uniquely recovered as a Brill-Noether locus of Bridgeland stable objects in its Kuznetsov component. (ii) Exact equivalences. We prove that, up to composing with an explicit auto-equivalence, any Fourier-Mukai type equivalence of Kuznetsov components of two del Pezzo threefolds of degree $2\leq d\leq 4$ can be lifted to an equivalence of their bounded derived categories. As a result, we obtain a complete description of the group of Fourier-Mukai type auto-equivalences of the Kuznetsov component of $Y_d$. We also describe the group of Fourier-Mukai type auto-equivalences of Kuznetsov components of index one prime Fano threefolds $X_{2g-2}$ of genus $g=6$ and $8$. As an application, first we identify the group of automorphisms of $X_{14}$ and its associated $Y_3$. Then we give a new disproof of Kuznetsov's Fano threefold conjecture by assuming Gushel-Mukai threefolds are general. In an appendix, we classify instanton sheaves on quartic double solids, generalizing a result of Druel.

Abstract:Consider the problem of three point vortices (also called Helmholtz’ vortices) on a plane, with arbitrarily given vorticities. The interaction between vortices is proportional to 1/r, where r is the distance between two vortices. The problem has 2 equilateral and at most 3 collinear normalized relative equilibria. This 3 is the optimal upper bound. Our main result is that the above standard statements remain unchanged if we consider an interaction proportional to r b, for any b < 0. For 0 < b < 1, the optimal upper bound becomes 5. For positive vorticities and any b < 1, there are exactly 3 collinear normalized relative equilibria. The case b = −2 of this last statement is the well-known theorem due to Euler: in the Newtonian 3-body problem, for any choice of the 3 masses, there are 3 Euler configurations (also known as the 3 Euler points). These small upper bounds strengthen the belief of Kushnirenko and Khovanskii [18]: real varieties defined by simple systems should have a simple topology. We indicate some hard conjectures about the configurations of relative equilibrium and suggest they could be attacked within the quasi-polynomial framework.
