Abstract:The superposition of causal order shows promise in various quantum technologies. However, the fragility of quantum systems arising from environmental interactions, leading to dissipative behavior and irreversibility, demands a deeper understanding of the possible instabilities in the coherent control of causal orders. In this work, we employ a collisional model to investigate the impact of an open control system on the generation of interference between two causal orders. We present the environmental instabilities for the switch of two arbitrary quantum operations and examine the influence of environmental temperature on each potential outcome of control post-selection. Additionally, we explore how environmental instabilities affect protocol performance, including switching between mutually unbiased measurement observables and refrigeration powered by causal order superposition, providing insights into broader implications.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the environmental instability problem of the Quantum Switch (QS) under open - control. Specifically, the researchers are concerned with how the interaction between the control part of the quantum switch and the environment affects the interference phenomenon between two causal orders when this interaction occurs, and how these environmental instability factors affect the performance of the quantum switch protocol.
### Background
Quantum coherence is a remarkable feature in quantum mechanics, which makes the causal structure of quantum operations uncertain, and this may be a key resource for achieving new quantum advantages. However, quantum systems show vulnerability due to their inevitable interaction with the environment, resulting in dissipative behavior and irreversibility, which poses a challenge to the coherent control of causal order in the quantum switch. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the influence of the environment on the causal - order interference in the quantum switch.
### Research Objectives
1. **Quantum - switch behavior under environmental influence**: Use the collision model to study the influence of the open - control system on the interference between two quantum operations, especially the influence of the environmental temperature on the post - selection results after control.
2. **Protocol performance analysis**: Explore how environmental instability affects the performance of protocols based on the quantum switch, such as switching between different measurement observables and refrigeration driven by causal - order superposition.
### Main Findings
- **Thermal instability**: The study found that the thermal instability caused by environmental interaction will consistently reduce the contribution of the Superposition of Causal Orders (SCO) term, regardless of the environmental temperature. However, the environmental temperature will affect the post - selection probability and the conditional state.
- **Low - temperature effect**: Under low - temperature conditions, the environment asymmetrically shields one post - selection result (|−⟩), while under high - temperature conditions, both post - selection results are similarly affected, suppressing the SCO.
- **Performance impact**: These instabilities have a significant impact on the performance of protocols based on the quantum switch, especially in scenarios that require relying on specific post - selection results, such as refrigerators driven by causal - order superposition.
### Methods
- **Collision model**: The researchers used the collision model to simulate the interaction between the environment and the control system, where the environment is modeled as a series of auxiliary qubits in a thermal state.
- **Mathematical description**: By defining and analyzing a series of operators (such as \(A_{\text{def}}\) and \(A_{\text{indef}}\)), the researchers described in detail the influence of environmental interaction on the state of the quantum switch.
### Application Examples
1. **SCO of the Mutually Unbiased Bases (MUB) monitoring channel**: Analyzed how environmental instability affects the SCO of the Mutually Unbiased Bases (MUB) monitoring channel under different measurement intensities.
2. **Refrigerator driven by SCO**: Explored how environmental instability affects the performance of a refrigerator driven by causal - order superposition.
### Conclusion
Environmental interaction has a significant negative impact on the causal - order interference in the quantum switch, especially when the control part interacts with the environment. These findings not only help to understand the basic physical mechanism of the quantum switch, but also provide a theoretical basis for designing more robust quantum technologies. Future research can further explore how to develop protocols that can resist these instabilities or use these instabilities as an additional resource.
