Abstract:We revisit graviton production via Bremsstrahlung from the decay of the inflaton during inflationary reheating. Using two complementary computational techniques, we first show that such 3-body differential decay rates differ from previously reported results in the literature. We then compute the stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background that forms during the period of reheating, when the inflaton perturbatively decays with the radiative emission of gravitons. By computing the number of relativistic degrees of freedom in terms of $\Delta N_\text{eff}$, we constrain the resulting GW energy density from BBN and CMB. Finally, we project current and future GW detector sensitivities in probing such a stochastic GW background, which typically peaks in the GHz to THz ballpark, opening up the opportunity to be detected with microwave cavities and space-based GW detectors.

Probing Reheating with Graviton Bremsstrahlung

Abstract:We investigate the stochastic gravitational wave (GW) spectrum resulting from graviton bremsstrahlung during inflationary reheating. We focus on an inflaton $\phi$ oscillating around a generic monomial potential $V(\phi) \propto \phi^n$, considering two different reheating scenarios: $i)$ inflaton decay and $ii)$ inflaton annihilation. We show that in the case of a quadratic potential, the scattering of the inflatons can give rise to larger GW amplitude than the decay channel. On the other hand, the GW spectrum exhibits distinct features and redshifts in each scenario, which makes it possible to distinguish them in the event of a discovery. Specifically, in the case of annihilation, the GW frequency can be shifted to values higher than those of decay, whereas the GW amplitude generated by annihilation turns out to be smaller than that in the decay case for $n \geq 4$, due to the different scaling of radiation during reheating. We also show that the differences in the GW spectrum become more prominent with increasing $n$. Finally, we highlight the potential of future high-frequency GW detectors to distinguish between the different reheating scenarios.

Bremsstrahlung-induced Gravitational Waves in Monomial Potentials during Reheating

Abstract:We discuss the production of primordial gravitational waves (GW) from radiative inflaton decay during the period of reheating, assuming perturbative decay of the inflaton either into a pair of bosons or fermions, leading to successful reheating satisfying constraint from Big Bang nucleosynthesis. Assuming that the inflaton $\phi$ oscillates in a general monomial potential $V(\phi)\propto \phi^n$, which results in a time-dependent inflaton decay width, we show that the resulting stochastic GW background can have optimistic detection prospects, especially in detectors that search for a high-frequency GW spectrum, depending on the choice of $n$ that determines the shape of the potential during reheating. We also discuss how this GW energy density may affect the measurement of $\Delta N_{\text{eff}}$ for bosonic and fermionic reheating scenarios.

Gravitational Wave Probe of Planck-scale Physics After Inflation

Abstract:Particle decays are always accompanied by the emission of graviton quanta of gravity through bremsstrahlung processes. However, the corresponding branching ratio is suppressed by the square of the ratio of particle's mass to the Planck scale. The resulting present abundance of gravitational waves (GWs), composed of gravitons, is analogously suppressed. We show that superheavy particles, as heavy as the Planck scale, can be naturally produced during the post-inflationary reheating stage in the early Universe and their decays yield dramatic amounts of GWs over broad frequency range. GW observations could hence directly probe Planck-scale physics, notoriously challenging to explore.

Abstract:The concept of early Universe inflation resolves several problems of hot Big Bang theory and quantitatively explains the origin of the inhomogeneities in the present Universe. However, it is not possible to arrange inflation in a scalar field model with renormalizable potential, such that it would not contradict the recent Planck data. For this reason, inflaton must have also higher derivative couplings suppressed at least by the Planck scale. We show that these couplings may be relevant during reheating and lead to non-negligible production of gravitons. We consider the possibility that the unitarity breaking scale for the model of inflation is lower than the Planck scale and compute production of gravitons during reheating, due to the inflaton decay to two gravitons and graviton bremsstrahlung process. The spectrum of produced gravitons is crucially dependent on reheating temperature and inflaton mass. We find that for low reheating temperature decay to gravitons lead to significant amount of dark radiation. Confronting this result with CMB constraints, we find reheating dependent bounds on the unitarity breaking scale. We also compare the obtained gravitational wave signals with the projected limits of future high frequency gravitational wave experiments.

Testing cogenesis during reheating with primordial gravitational waves

Abstract:We study the cogenesis of baryon and dark matter (DM) in an extended reheating period after the end of slow-roll inflation. Within the regime of perturbative reheating, we consider different monomial potential of the inflaton field during reheating era. The inflaton condensate reheats the Universe by decaying into the Standard Model (SM) bath either via fermionic or bosonic decay modes. Assuming the leptogenesis route to baryogenesis in a canonical seesaw framework, we consider the bath to produce such RHNs during the period of reheating when the maximum temperature $T_{\rm max}$ of the SM bath is well above the reheating temperature $T_{\rm rh}$. The DM, assumed to be a SM gauge singlet field, also gets produced from the bath during the reheating period via UV freeze-in. In addition to obtaining different parameter space for such non-thermal leptogenesis and DM for both bosonic and fermionic reheating modes and the type of monomial potential, we discuss the possibility of probing such scenarios via spectral shape of primordial gravitational waves.

A novel probe of graviton dispersion relations at nano-Hertz frequencies

Abstract:We generalise Phinney's 'practical theorem' to account for modified graviton dispersion relations motivated by certain cosmological scenarios. Focusing on specific examples, we show how such modifications can induce characteristic localised distortions, bumps, in the frequency profile of the stochastic gravitational wave background emitted from distant binary sources. We concentrate on gravitational waves at nano-Hertz frequencies probed by pulsar timing arrays, and we forecast the capabilities of future experiments to accurately probe parameters controlling modified dispersion relations. Our predictions are based on properties of gravitational waves emitted in the first inspiral phase of the binary process, and do not rely on assumptions of non-linear effects occurring during the binary merging phase

Thermal Gravitational Waves During Reheating

Abstract:In this work, we revisit the generation of stochastic gravitational waves (GWs) from interactions in the thermal plasma. We extend the existing literature by incorporating the reheating phase into the thermal history. Our results show that the amplitude of the GW spectrum can be significantly enhanced because the temperature during reheating can be much higher than the reheating temperature. Furthermore, since the temperature evolution during reheating differs from that of free radiation, the peak frequency of the spectrum can also shift. Additionally, the morphology of the spectrum can present characteristic features. We also compute the contribution of the integrated GW spectrum to the effective number of neutrino species, $\Delta N_\text{eff}$, which can be substantially larger.

Bremsstrahlung High-frequency Gravitational Wave Signatures of High-scale Non-thermal Leptogenesis

Abstract:Inflaton seeds non-thermal leptogenesis by pair producing right-handed neutrinos in the seesaw model. We show that the inevitable graviton bremsstrahlung associated with inflaton decay can be a unique probe of non-thermal leptogenesis. The emitted gravitons contribute to a high-frequency stochastic gravitational waves background with a characteristic fall-off below the peak frequency. Besides leading to a lower bound on the frequency ($f\gtrsim 10^{11}$ Hz), the seesaw-perturbativity condition makes the mechanism sensitive to the lightest neutrino mass. For an inflaton mass close to the Planck scale, the gravitational waves contribute to sizeable dark radiation, which is within the projected sensitivity limits of future experiments such as CMB-S4 and CMB-HD.

Such scenarios are of utmost interest when no other interaction between the visible and dark sectors is present, therefore having no other detectability prospects. We consider the remnant energy in the coherently oscillating inflaton's zeroth mode to contribute to the observed relic dark matter density in the Universe. To fully capture the nonlinear dynamics and the effects of back-reactions during the oscillation, we resort to full nonlinear lattice simulation with pseudo-spectral methods to eliminate the differencing noises. We investigate for models whose behavior during the reheating era is of $m_{\Phi}^2\Phi^2$ type and find the typical primordial stochastic GWs backgrounds spectrum from scatterings among highly populated inflaton modes behaving like matter. We comment on the challenges of constructing such viable inflationary models such that the inflaton will account for the total dark matter of the universe while the produced GWs are within the future GWs detectors such as BBO, DECIGO, PTA, AION-MAGIS, and CE. We also describe the necessary modifications to the standard perturbative reheating scenario to prevent the depletion of residual inflaton energy via perturbative decay.

Probing neutrino interactions and dark radiation with gravitational waves

Abstract:After their generation, cosmological backgrounds of gravitational waves propagate nearly freely but for the expansion of the Universe and the anisotropic stress of free-streaming particles. Primordial signals -- both that from inflation and the infrared spectrum associated to subhorizon production mechanisms -- would carry clean information about the cosmological history of these effects. We study the modulation of the standard damping of gravitational waves by free-streaming radiation due to the decoupling (or recoupling) of interactions. We focus on nonstandard neutrino interactions in effect after the decoupling of weak interactions as well as more general scenarios in the early Universe involving other light relics. We develop semianalytic results in fully free-streaming scenarios to provide intuition for numerical results that incorporate interaction rates with a variety of temerpature dependencies. Finally, we compute the imprint of neutrino interactions on the $B$-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background, and we comment on other means to infer the presence of such effects at higher frequencies.

Probing Exotic Phases Via Stochastic Gravitational Wave Spectra

Abstract:Stochastic backgrounds of gravitational waves (GWs) from the pre-BBN era offer a unique opportunity to probe the universe beyond what has already been achieved with the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). If the source is short in duration, the low frequency tail of the resulting GW spectrum follows a universal frequency scaling dependent on the equation of state of the universe when modes enter the horizon. We demonstrate that the distortion of the equation of state due to massive particles becoming non-relativistic can lead to an observable dip in the GW spectrum. To illustrate this effect, we consider a first order chiral symmetry breaking phase transition in the weak-confined Standard Model (WCSM). The model features a large number of pions and mostly elementary fermions with masses just below the critical temperature for the phase transition. These states lead to a 20$\%$ dip in the GW power. We find potential sensitivity to the distortions in the spectrum to future GW detectors such as LISA, DECIGO, BBO, and $\mu$Ares.

Ultra-high Frequency Gravitational Waves from Scattering, Bremsstrahlung and Decay during Reheating

Abstract:We investigate ultra-high frequency gravitational waves (GWs) from gravitons generated during inflationary reheating. Specifically, we study inflaton scattering with its decay product, where the couplings involved in this $2 \to 2$ scattering are the same as those in the $1 \to 3$ graviton Bremsstrahlung process. We compute the graviton production rate via such $2 \to 2$ scattering. Additionally, we compare the resulting GW spectrum with that from Bremsstrahlung as well as that from pure $2 \to 2$ inflaton scatterings. For completeness, the GW spectrum from graviton pair production through one-loop induced $1 \to 2$ inflaton decay is also analyzed. With a systematic comparison among the four sources of GWs, we find that $2 \to 2$ inflaton scattering with its decay product can dominate over Bremsstrahlung if the reheating temperature is larger than the inflaton mass. Pure inflaton $2 \to 2$ scattering is typically subdominant compared to Bremsstrahlung except in the high-frequency tail. The contribution from one-loop induced $1 \to 2$ inflaton decay is shown to be suppressed compared to Bremsstrahlung and pure inflaton $2 \to 2$ scattering.

Measuring Inflaton Couplings via Primordial Gravitational Waves

Abstract:We investigate the reach of future gravitational wave (GW) detectors in probing inflaton couplings with visible sector particles that can either be bosonic or fermionic in nature. Assuming reheating takes place through perturbative quantum production from vacuum in presence of classical inflaton background field, we find that the spectral energy density of the primordial GW generated during inflation becomes sensitive to inflaton-matter coupling. We conclude, obeying bounds from Big Bang Nucleosysthesis and Cosmic Microwave Background, that, e.g., inflaton-scalar couplings of the order of $\sim\mathcal{O}(10^{-20})$ GeV fall within the sensitivity range of several proposed GW detector facilities. However, this prediction is sensitive to the size of the inflationary scale, nature of the inflaton-matter interaction and shape of the potential during reheating. Having found the time-dependent effective inflaton decay width, we also discuss its implications for dark matter (DM) production from the thermal plasma via UV freeze-in during reheating. It is shown, that one can reproduce the observed DM abundance for its mass up to several PeVs, depending on the dimension of the operator connecting DM with the thermal bath and the associated scale of the UV physics. Thus we promote primordial GW to observables sensitive to feebly coupled inflaton, which is very challenging if not impossible to test in conventional particle physics laboratories or astrophysical measurements.

Abstract:We initiate a study of the gravitational-wave signatures of a phase transition that occurs as the Universe's temperature increases during reheating. The gravitational-wave signatures of such a heating phase transition are different from those of a cooling phase transition, and their detection could allow us to probe reheating. In the lucky case that the gravitational-wave signatures from both the heating and cooling phase transitions were to be observed, information about reheating could in principle be obtained utilizing the correlations between the two transitions. Frictional effects, leading to a constant bubble-wall speed in one case, will instead behave as an ``antifriction'' force in the other and accelerate the bubble wall. This antifriction will often take the bubble into a runaway regime, significantly enhancing the amplitude of the heating phase transition gravitational-wave signal. The efficiency, strength, and duration of the phase transitions will be similarly correlated in a reheating-dependent way.

Abstract:A stochastic gravitational wave background is a prediction of a number of astrophysical and cosmological phenomena including early Universe Cosmology. Recently, the NANOGrav Collaboration reported conclusive evidence for a stochastic gravitational-wave background. We analyze the NANOGrav signal assuming it is of primordial origin including the reheating phase. We use the latest measurements from NANOGrav to constrain the Universe's reheating equation of state $w_{re}$ the reheating temperature, $T_{re}$, the tensor to scalar ratio $r$, and the tensor tilt $n_t$. Assuming the constant equation of state $w_{re}$ responsible for reheating phase, we find preference for instant reheating, $w_{re} = 0.36^{+0.15}_{-0.28}$, and a very blue tilt $n_t = 1.94^{+0.43}_{-0.88}$. We find a degeneracy between the tensor to scalar ratio $r$ and $T_{re}$ and suggest ways to break this degeneracy. In all cases where the reheating temperature is constrained, it is constrained to be very low with $T_{re}\leq 10^5 GeV$. We further find that a scale-invariant spectrum as suggested by inflation implies a stiff equation of state $w_{re}=19/3$. If extrapolated, the blue-tilted primordial spectrum that agrees with the NANOGrav signal at corresponding frequencies is incompatible with the LIGO bound. This incompatibility is another challenge for connecting NANOGrav with the primordial spectrum. We discuss a number of ways to circumvent this issue. We split the spectrum into a sum of astrophysical and primordial spectra and constrain the astrophysical and primordial components using NANOGrav data and the LIGO bound. In another attempt, we use the same data and constrain the running of the spectrum. Any of these or a combination of such methods can be used to reconcile the NANOGrav data and the LIGO bound with the primordial power spectrum.
