Abstract:Our motivation is to build a systematic method in order to investigate the structure of cluster algebras of geometric type. The method is given through the notion of mixing-type sub-seeds, the theory of seed homomorphisms and the view-point of gluing of seeds. As an application, for (rooted) cluster algebras, we completely classify rooted cluster subalgebras and characterize rooted cluster quotient algebras in detail. Also, we build the relationship between the categorification of a rooted cluster algebra and that of its rooted cluster subalgebras. Note that cluster algebras of geometric type studied here are of the sign-skew-symmetric case.

Abstract:Targets are matroids that arise from a nested sequence of flats in a projective geometry. This class of matroids was introduced by Nelson and Nomoto, who found the forbidden induced restrictions for binary targets. This paper generalizes their result to targets arising from projective geometries over $GF(q)$. We also consider targets arising from nested sequences of affine flats and determine the forbidden induced restrictions for affine targets.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a new axioms system based on nonseparable flats with their ranks to define a matroid. We deduce a polynomial time algorithm for deciding if a given matroid (respectively, arbitrary structure) is an uniform matroid. This problem is intractable if we use an independence or an equivalent oracle.

Abstract:OSCAR is an innovative new computer algebra system which combines and extends the power of its four cornerstone systems - GAP (group theory), Singular (algebra and algebraic geometry), Polymake (polyhedral geometry), and Antic (number theory). Here, we present parts of the module handeling matroids in OSCAR, which will appear as a chapter of the upcoming OSCAR book. A matroid is a fundamental and actively studied object in combinatorics. Matroids generalize linear dependency in vector spaces as well as many aspects of graph theory. Moreover, matroids form a cornerstone of tropical geometry and a deep link between algebraic geometry and combinatorics. Our focus lies in particular on computing the realization space and the Chow ring of a matroid.

Towards the Proximity Conjecture on Group-Labeled Matroids

Abstract:Consider a matroid $M$ whose ground set is equipped with a labeling to an abelian group. A basis of $M$ is called $F$-avoiding if the sum of the labels of its elements is not in a forbidden label set $F$. Hörsch, Imolay, Mizutani, Oki, and Schwarcz (2024) conjectured that if an $F$-avoiding basis exists, then any basis can be transformed into an $F$-avoiding basis by exchanging at most $|F|$ elements. This proximity conjecture is known to hold for certain specific groups; in the case where $|F| \le 2$; or when the matroid is subsequence-interchangeably base orderable (SIBO), which is a weakening of the so-called strongly base orderable (SBO) property. In this paper, we settle the proximity conjecture for sparse paving matroids or in the case where $|F| \le 4$. Related to the latter result, we present the first known example of a non-SIBO matroid. We further address the setting of multiple group-label constraints, showing proximity results for the cases of two labelings, SIBO matroids, matroids representable over a fixed, finite field, and sparse paving matroids.

Foundations of matroids -- Part 2: Further theory, examples, and computational methods

Abstract:In this sequel to "Foundations of matroids - Part 1", we establish several presentations of the foundation of a matroid in terms of small building blocks. For example, we show that the foundation of a matroid M is the colimit of the foundations of all embedded minors of M isomorphic to one of the matroids $U^2_4$, $U^2_5$, $U^3_5$, $C_5$, $C_5^\ast$, $U^2_4\oplus U^1_2$, $F_7$, $F_7^\ast$, and we show that this list is minimal. We establish similar minimal lists of building blocks for the classes of 2-connected and 3-connected matroids. We also establish a presentation for the foundation of a matroid in terms of its lattice of flats. Each of these presentations provides a useful method to compute the foundation of certain matroids, as we illustrate with a number of concrete examples. Combining these techniques with other results in the literature, we are able to compute the foundations of several interesting classes of matroids, including whirls, rank-2 uniform matroids, and projective geometries. In an appendix, we catalogue various 'small' pastures which occur as foundations of matroids, most of which were found with the assistance of a computer, and we discuss some of their interesting properties.

Shifted and Threshold Matroids

Abstract:We characterize the class of threshold matroids by the structure of their defining bases. We also give an example of a shifted matroid which is not threshold, answering a question of Deza and Onn. We conclude by exploring consequences of our characterization of threshold matroids: We give a formula for the number of isomorphism classes of threshold matroids on a groundset of size $n$. This enumeration shows that almost all shifted matroids are not threshold. We also present a polynomial time algorithm to check if a matroid is threshold and provide alternative and simplified proofs of some of the main results of Deza and Onn.

Abstract:Efficient deterministic algorithms to construct representations of lattice path matroids over finite fields are presented. They are built on known constructions of hierarchical secret sharing schemes, a recent characterization of hierarchical matroid ports, and the existence of isolating weight functions for lattice path matroids whose values are polynomial on the size of the ground set.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of an online matroid embedding, which is an algorithm for mapping an unknown matroid that is revealed in an online fashion to a larger-but-known matroid. The existence of such embedding enables a reduction from the version of the matroid secretary problem where the matroid is unknown to the version where the matroid is known in advance. We show that online matroid embeddings exist for binary (and hence graphic) and laminar matroids. We also show a negative result showing that no online matroid embedding exists for the class of all matroids. Finally, we define the notion of an approximate matroid embedding, generalizing the notion of {\alpha}-partition property, and provide an upper bound on the approximability of binary matroids by a partition matroid, matching the lower bound of Dughmi et al.

Graph Curve Matroids

Abstract:We introduce a new class of matroids, called graph curve matroids. A graph curve matroid is associated to a graph and defined on the vertices of the graph as a ground set. We prove that these matroids provide a combinatorial description of hyperplane sections of degenerate canonical curves in algebraic geometry. Our focus lies on graphs that are 2-connected and trivalent, which define identically self-dual graph curve matroids, but we also develop generalizations. Finally, we provide an algorithm to compute the graph curve matroid associated to a given graph, as well as an implementation and data of examples that can be used in Macaulay2.

A Conjecture on C-matrices of Cluster Algebras

Abstract:For a skew-symmetrizable cluster algebra ${\mathcal{A}}_{t_{0}}$ with principal coefficients at $t_{0}$, we prove that each seed $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}_{t}$ of ${\mathcal{A}}_{t_{0}}$ is uniquely determined by its $C$-matrix, which was proposed by Fomin and Zelevinsky (Compos. Math. 143 (2007), 112–164) as a conjecture. Our proof is based on the fact that the positivity of cluster variables and sign coherence of $c$-vectors hold for ${\mathcal{A}}_{t_{0}}$, which was actually verified in Gross et al. (Canonical bases for cluster algebras, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 31(2) (2018), 497–608). Further discussion is provided in the sign-skew-symmetric case so as to obtain a weak version of the conjecture in this general case.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of graphic cocircuits and show that a large class of regular matroids with graphic cocircuits belongs to the class of signed-graphic matroids. Moreover, we provide an algorithm which determines whether a cographic matroid with graphic cocircuits is signed-graphic or not.

Abstract:Let $\psi$ be a sentence in the counting monadic second-order logic of matroids and let $\mathbb{F}$ be a finite field. Hliněný's Theorem says that we can test whether $\mathbb{F}$-representable matroids satisfy $\psi$ using an algorithm that is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to branch-width. In a previous paper we proved there is a similar fixed-parameter tractable algorithm that can test the members of any efficiently pigeonhole class. In this sequel we apply results from the first paper and thereby extend Hliněný's Theorem to the classes of fundamental transversal matroids, lattice path matroids, bicircular matroids, and $H$-gain-graphic matroids, when $H$ is a finite group. As a consequence, we can obtain a new proof of Courcelle's Theorem.

Optimizing Extension Techniques for Discovering Non-Algebraic Matroids

Abstract:In this work, we revisit some combinatorial and information-theoretic extension techniques for detecting non-algebraic matroids. These are the Dress-Lovász and Ahlswede-Körner extension properties. We provide optimizations of these techniques to reduce their computational complexity, finding new non-algebraic matroids on 9 and 10 points. In addition, we use the Ahlswede-Körner extension property to find better lower bounds on the information ratio of secret sharing schemes for ports of non-algebraic matroids.

Abstract:We delve into the properties possessed by algebras, which we have termed seeds, that map to big Cohen-Macaulay algebras. We will show that over a complete local domain of positive characteristic any two big Cohen-Macaulay algebras map to a common big Cohen-Macaulay algebra. We will also strengthen Hochster and Huneke's "weakly functorial" existence result for big Cohen-Macaulay algebras by showing that the seed property is stable under base change between complete local domains of positive characteristic. We also show that every seed over a positive characteristic local ring (R,m) maps to a big Cohen-Macaulay R-algebra that is an absolutely integrally closed, m-adically separated, quasilocal domain.

Problems on Group-labeled Matroid Bases

Abstract:Consider a matroid equipped with a labeling of its ground set to an abelian group. We define the label of a subset of the ground set as the sum of the labels of its elements. We study a collection of problems on finding bases and common bases of matroids with restrictions on their labels. For zero bases and zero common bases, the results are mostly negative. While finding a non-zero basis of a matroid is not difficult, it turns out that the complexity of finding a non-zero common basis depends on the group. Namely, we show that the problem is hard for a fixed group if it contains an element of order two, otherwise it is polynomially solvable.

Abstract:Cluster algebras are commutative algebras that were introduced by Fomin and Zelevinsky in order to model the dual canonical basis of a quantum group and total positivity in algebraic groups. Cluster categories were introduced as a representation-theoretic model for cluster algebras. In this article we use this representation-theoretic approach to prove a conjecture of Fomin and Zelevinsky, that for cluster algebras with no coefficients associated to quivers with no oriented cycles, a seed is determined by its cluster. We also obtain an interpretation of the monomial in the denominator of a non-polynomial cluster variable in terms of the composition factors of an indecomposable exceptional module over an associated hereditary algebra.

Matroid Lifts and Representability

Abstract:A 1965 result of Crapo shows that every elementary lift of a matroid $M$ can be constructed from a linear class of circuits of $M$. In a recent paper, Walsh generalized this construction by defining a rank-$k$ lift of a matroid $M$ given a rank-$k$ matroid $N$ on the set of circuits of $M$, and conjectured that all matroid lifts can be obtained in this way. In this sequel paper we simplify Walsh's construction and show that this conjecture is true for representable matroids but is false in general. This gives a new way to certify that a particular matroid is non-representable, which we use to construct new classes of non-representable matroids. Walsh also applied the new matroid lift construction to gain graphs over the additive group of a non-prime finite field, generalizing a construction of Zaslavsky for these special groups. He conjectured that this construction is possible on three or more vertices only for the additive group of a non-prime finite field. We show that this conjecture holds for four or more vertices, but fails for exactly three.

Abstract:Cluster algebras have recently become an important player in mathematics and physics. In this work, we investigate them through the lens of modern data science, specifically with techniques from network science and machine learning. Network analysis methods are applied to the exchange graphs for cluster algebras of varying mutation types. The analysis indicates that when the graphs are represented without identifying by permutation equivalence between clusters an elegant symmetry emerges in the quiver exchange graph embedding. The ratio between number of seeds and number of quivers associated to this symmetry is computed for finite Dynkin type algebras up to rank 5, and conjectured for higher ranks. Simple machine learning techniques successfully learn to classify cluster algebras using the data of seeds. The learning performance exceeds 0.9 accuracies between algebras of the same mutation type and between types, as well as relative to artificially generated data.
