Abstract:In 1797, Pfaff gave a simple proof of a ${}_3F_2$ hypergeometric series summation formula which was much later reproved by Andrews in 1996. In the same paper, Andrews also proved other well-known hypergeometric identities using Pfaff's method. In this paper, we prove a number of terminating $q$-hypergeometric series-product identities using Pfaff's method thereby providing a detailed account of its wide applicability.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to prove a series of terminating q - hypergeometric series - product identities by re - examining Pfaff's method. Specifically, the author Artram Dhar details in the paper how to use Pfaff's method to prove several known terminating q - hypergeometric series - product identities, which are widely used in mathematical analysis, especially in the theory of special functions and combinatorics. The main contributions of the paper are as follows: 1. **Review of Pfaff's method**: First, it reviews a simple proof proposed by Pfaff in 1797, that is, the proof of a 3F2 hypergeometric series summation formula. This result was later reproved by Andrews in 1996, and Andrews also used Pfaff's method to prove some other well - known hypergeometric identities. 2. **Extension of the application of Pfaff's method**: The author further applies Pfaff's method to prove a series of terminating q - hypergeometric series - product identities. These identities include but are not limited to: - q - binomial theorem - q - Chu - Vandermonde identity - q - Pfaff - Saalschütz identity - q - Dixon identity - and some other important identities 3. **Detailed proof process**: The paper shows in detail the proof process of each identity, using the recurrence relations and initial value conditions in Pfaff's method to verify the correctness of these identities. 4. **Effectiveness of the method**: The author emphasizes the effectiveness of Pfaff's method in dealing with balanced and well - behaved hypergeometric series (and q - series), which provides new tools and perspectives for future research. In conclusion, the main purpose of this paper is to provide more theoretical support and practical applications for the study of hypergeometric series and q - hypergeometric series by re - examining and extending Pfaff's method.
