Abstract:In this paper, we prove that a multilinear singular integral operator $T$ on product spaces can be extended to a compact multilinear operator from $L^{p_1}(w_1^{p_1}) \times \cdots \times L^{p_m}(w_m^{p_m})$ to $L^p(w^p)$ for all exponents $\frac1p = \sum_{j=1}^m \frac{1}{p_j} > 0$ with $p_1, \ldots, p_m \in (1, \infty]$ and for all weights $\vec{w} \in A_{\vec{p}}(\mathbb{R}^{n_1} \times \mathbb{R}^{n_2})$ if the following hypotheses are satisfied: (H1) $T$ admits a compact full kernel representation, (H2) $T$ admits a compact partial kernel representation, (H3) $T$ satisfies the weak compactness property, (H4) $T$ satisfies the diagonal $\mathrm{CMO}$ condition, and (H5) $T$ satisfies the product $\mathrm{CMO}$ condition. This is a multilinear compact extension of Journé's $T1$ theorem on product spaces.

A characterization of compactness via bilinear $T1$ theorem

Abstract:In this paper we solve a long standing problem about the bilinear $T1$ theorem to characterize the (weighted) compactness of bilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators. Let $T$ be a bilinear operator associated with a standard bilinear Calderón-Zygmund kernel. We prove that $T$ can be extended to a compact bilinear operator from $L^{p_1}(w_1^{p_1}) \times L^{p_2}(w_2^{p_2})$ to $L^p(w^p)$ for all exponents $\frac1p = \frac{1}{p_1} + \frac{1}{p_2}>0$ with $p_1, p_2 \in (1, \infty]$ and for all weights $(w_1, w_2) \in A_{(p_1, p_2)}$ if and only if the following hypotheses hold: (H1) $T$ is associated with a compact bilinear Calderón-Zygmund kernel, (H2) $T$ satisfies the weak compactness property, and (H3) $T(1,1), T^{*1}(1,1), T^{*2}(1,1) \in \mathrm{CMO}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. This is also equivalent to the endpoint compactness: (1) $T$ is compact from $L^1(w_1) \times L^1(w_2)$ to $L^{\frac12, \infty}(w^{\frac12})$ for all $(w_1, w_2) \in A_{(1, 1)}$, or (2) $T$ is compact from $L^{\infty}(w_1^{\infty}) \times L^{\infty}(w_2^{\infty})$ to $\mathrm{CMO}_{\lambda}(w^{\infty})$ for all $(w_1, w_2) \in A_{(\infty, \infty)}$. Besides, any of these properties is equivalent to the fact that $T$ admits a compact bilinear dyadic representation. Our main approaches consist of the following new ingredients: (i) a resulting representation of a compact bilinear Calderón-Zygmund operator as an average of some compact bilinear dyadic shifts and paraproducts; (ii) extrapolation of endpoint compactness for bilinear operators; and (iii) compactness criterion in weighted Lorentz spaces. Finally, to illustrate the applicability of our result, we demonstrate the hypotheses (H1)-(H3) through examples including bilinear continuous/dyadic paraproducts, bilinear pseudo-differential operators, and bilinear commutators.

A compact extension of Journé's $T1$ theorem on product spaces

Abstract:We prove a compact version of the $T1$ theorem for bi-parameter singular integrals. That is, if a bi-parameter singular integral operator $T$ admits the compact full and partial kernel representations, and satisfies the weak compactness property, the diagonal $\mathrm{CMO}$ condition, and the product $\mathrm{CMO}$ condition, then $T$ can be extended to a compact operator on $L^p(w)$ for all $1<p<\infty$ and $w \in A_p(\mathbb{R}^{n_1} \times \mathbb{R}^{n_2})$. Even in the unweighted setting, it is the first time to give a compact extension of Journé's $T1$ theorem on product spaces.

Compact monotone tall complexity one $T$-spaces

Abstract:In this paper we study compact monotone tall complexity one $T$-spaces. We use the classification of Karshon and Tolman, and the monotone condition, to prove that any two such spaces are isomorphic if and only if they have equal Duistermaat-Heckman measures. Moreover, we show that the moment polytope is Delzant and reflexive, and provide a complete description of the possible Duistermaat-Heckman measures. Whence we obtain a finiteness result that is analogous to that for compact monotone symplectic toric manifolds. Furthermore, we show that any such $T$-action can be extended to a toric $(T \times S^1)$-action. Motivated by a conjecture of Fine and Panov, we prove that any compact monotone tall complexity one $T$-space is equivariantly symplectomorphic to a Fano manifold endowed with a suitable symplectic form and a complexity one $T$-action.

On the compactness of the bi-commutator

Abstract:We prove compactness results and characterizations for the bi-commutator $[T_1,[b, T_2]]$ of a symbol $b$ and two non-degenerate Calderón-Zygmund singular integral operators $T_1, T_2$. Our strategy for proving sufficient conditions for compactness is to first establish them in the mixed-norm $L^{p_1}L^{p_2}\to L^{q_1}L^{q_2}$ off-diagonal case with $p_i < q_i$, and then extend these to other exponents, including the diagonal $p_i = q_i$, with a new extrapolation argument. In particular, the natural product $\operatorname{VMO}$ condition is obtained as a sufficient condition in the diagonal. A full characterization is obtained, both in terms of a vanishing mean oscillation type condition and in terms of the approximability of the symbol, whenever the inequality $p_i \le q_i$ is strict for at least one index. The extrapolation scheme for proving sufficiency requires us to prove new approximation results in relevant bi-parameter function spaces that are of independent interest. The necessity results are obtained by carefully combining recent rectangular approximate weak factorization methods with a classical idea of Uchiyama.

Abstract:We consider the weak to strong type problem for two weight norm inequalities for Calderón-Zygmund operators with doubling weights. We show that if a Calderón-Zygmund operator T is weak type (2,2) with doubling weights, then it is strong type (2,2) if and only if the dual cube testing condition for T^{*} holds, alternatively if and only if the dual cancellation condition of Stein holds. The testing condition can be taken with respect to either cubes or balls, and more generally, this is extended to a weak form of Tb theorem. Finally, we show that for all pairs of locally finite positive Borel measures, and all Stein elliptic Calderón-Zygmund operators T, the weak type (2,2) inequalities for T and and its associated maximal truncations operator T_{*} are equivalent. Thus the characterization of weak type for T_{*} in [LaSaUr1] applies to T as well.

On the $L^p$-to-$L^q$ boundedness and compactness of commutators along monomial curves

Abstract:For exponents $p,q\in (1,\infty),$ we study the $L^p$-to-$L^q$ boundedness and compactness of the commutator $[b,H_{\gamma}] = bH_{\gamma} - H_{\gamma}b,$ where $H_{\gamma}$ is the Hilbert transform along the monomial curve $\gamma$ and the function $b$ is complex valued. We obtain a sparse form domination of the commutator and show that $b\in \operatorname{BMO}^{\gamma,\alpha}$ is a sufficient condition for boundedness in a half-open range of exponents $q\in[p,p+p(\Xi));$ in doing so we obtain a genuinely fractional case $q>p$ and also give a new proof of the case $q=p,$ due to Bongers, Guo, J. Li and Wick. Involving the $L^p$ improving phenomena of single scale averages, we show that $b\in \operatorname{VMO}^{\gamma,\alpha}$ is a sufficient condition for compactness in the same range of exponents $q\in[p,p+p(\Xi))$ as in the case of boundedness. For $q<p,$ we show that $b\in \dot L^r$ is a sufficient condition for compactness; the argument is new and we use it to obtain a new short proof of the same implication for commutators of Calderón-Zygmund operators, recently due to Hytönen, K. Li, Tao and Yang. For necessity, and now restricting to the plane, we develop the approximate weak factorization argument to the extent that it now works for all monomial curves, thus removing the extra assumption present in our earlier work that the graph $\gamma(\mathbb{R})\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ intersects adjacent quadrants. As a consequence in the plane, we obtain that all of the above sufficiency conditions are necessary. We present several open problems.

Abstract:The classical Steinhaus theorem (\cite{Steinhaus1920}) says that if $A \subset {\Bbb R}^d$ has positive Lebesgue measure than $A-A=\{x-y: x,y \in A\}$ contains an open ball. We obtain some quantitative lower bounds on the size of this ball and in some cases, relate it to natural geometric properties of $\partial A$. We also study the process $K_n =\frac{1}{2}(K_{n-1} - K_{n-1})$ when $K_0$ is a compact subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$ and determine various aspects of its convergence to $Conv(K_1)$, the convex hull of $K_1$. We discuss some connections with convex geometry, Weyl tube formula and the Kakeya needle problem.

Limit theorems for low dimensional generalized $(T,T^{-1})$ transformations

Abstract:We consider generalized $(T, T^{-1})$ transformations such that the base map satisfies a multiple mixing local limit theorem and anticoncentration large deviation bounds and in the fiber we have $\mathbb{R}^d$ actions with $d=1$ or $2$ which are exponentially mixing of all orders. If the skewing cocycle has zero drift, we show that the ergodic sums satisfy the same limit theorems as the random walks in random scenery studied by Kesten and Spitzer (1979) and Bolthausen (1989). The proofs rely on the quenched CLT for the fiber action and the control of the quenched variance. This paper complements our previous work where the classical central limit theorem is obtained for a large class of generalized $(T, T^{-1})$ transformations.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a Minkowski-type inequality for weak Lebesgue space, which allows us to obtain a characterization of relative compactness in these spaces. Furthermore, we are the first to investigate the compactness results of commutators at the endpoint. The paper provides a comprehensive study of the compactness properties of commutators of Calderón-Zygmund operators in Hardy and $L^{1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ type spaces. Additionally, we provide factorization theorems for Hardy spaces in terms of singular integral operators in the $L^1(\mathbb{R}^n)$ space.

Abstract:We complement the recent theory of general singular integrals $T$ invariant under the Zygmund dilations $(x_1, x_2, x_3) \mapsto (s x_1, tx_2, st x_3)$ by proving necessary and sufficient conditions for the boundedness and compactness of commutators $[b,T]$ from $L^p \to L^q$. Previously, only the $p=q$ upper bound in terms of a Zygmund type little $\operatorname{BMO}$ space was known for general operators, and it appears that there has been some confusion about the corresponding lower bound in recent literature. We give complete characterizations whenever $p \le q$ for a general class of non-degenerate Zygmund type singular integrals. Some of the results are somewhat surprising in view of existing papers - for instance, compactness always forces $b$ to be constant. Even in the simpler situation of bi-parameter singular integrals it appears that this has not been observed previously.

Abstract:We prove an extrapolation of compactness theorem for operators on Banach function spaces satisfying certain convexity and concavity conditions. In particular, we show that the boundedness of an operator T in the weighted Lebesgue scale and the compactness of T in the unweighted Lebesgue scale yields compactness of T on a very general class of Banach function spaces. As our main new tool, we prove various characterizations of the boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator on such spaces and their associate spaces, using a novel sparse self-improvement technique. We apply our main results to prove compactness of the commutators of singular integral operators and pointwise multiplication by functions of vanishing mean oscillation on, for example, weighted variable Lebesgue spaces.

Abstract:The classical Morse-Sard theorem claims that for a mapping v : R-n -> Rm+1 of class C-k the measure of critical values v(Z(v,m)) is zero under condition k >= n - m. Here the critical set, or m-critical set is defined as Z(v,m) = {x is an element of R-n : rank del v(x) <= m}. Further Dubovitskii in 1957 and independently Federer and Dubovitskii in 1967 found some elegant extensions of this theorem to the case of other (e.g., lower) smoothness assumptions. They also established the sharpness of their results within the C-k category. Here we formulate and prove a bridge theorem that includes all the above results as particular cases: namely, if a function v : R-n -> R-d belongs to the Holder class C-k,C-alpha, 0 <= alpha < 1, then for every q> m the identity H-mu (Z(v,m) boolean AND v(-1) (y)) = 0 holds for H-q-almost all y is an element of R-d, where mu = n - m - (k + alpha) (q - m). Intuitively, the sense of this bridge theorem is very close to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle in theoretical physics: the more precise is the information we receive on measure of the image of the critical set, the less precisely the preimages are described, and vice versa. The result is new even for the classical C-k-case (when alpha = 0); similar result is established for the Sobolev classes of mappings W-p(k)(R-n,R-d) with minimal integrability assumptions p = max(1, n/k), i.e., it guarantees in general only the continuity (not everywhere differentiability) of a mapping. However, using some N-properties for Sobolev mappings, established in our previous paper, we obtained that the sets of nondifferentiability points of Sobolev mappings are fortunately negligible in the above bridge theorem. We cover also the case of fractional Sobolev spaces. The proofs of the most results are based on our previous joint papers with J. Bourgain and J. Kristensen (2013, 2015). Quantitative spectral stability for compact operators

Abstract:This paper deals with quantitative spectral stability for compact operators acting on $L^2(X,m)$, where $(X,m)$ is a measure space. Under fairly general assumptions, we provide a characterization of the dominant term of the asymptotic expansion of the eigenvalue variation in this abstract setting. Many of the results about quantitative spectral stability available in the literature can be recovered by our analysis. Furthermore, we illustrate our result with several applications, e.g. quantitative spectral stability for a Robin to Neumann problem, conformal transformations of Riemann metrics, Dirichlet forms under the removal of sets of small capacity, and for families of pseudo-differentials operators.

Abstract:We introduce and investigate a topological version of St\"ackel's 1907 characterization of finite sets, with the goal of obtaining an interesting notion that characterizes usual compactness (or a close variant of it). Define a $T_2$ topological space $(X, \tau)$ to be St\"ackel-compact if there is some linear ordering $\prec$ on $X$ such that every non-empty $\tau$-closed set contains a $\prec$-least and a $\prec$-greatest element. We find that compact spaces are St\"ackel-compact but not conversely, and St\"ackel-compact spaces are countably compact. The equivalence of St\"ackel-compactness with countable compactness remains open, but our main result is that this equivalence holds in scattered spaces of Cantor-Bendixson rank $< \omega_2$ under ZFC. Under V=L, the equivalence holds in all scattered spaces.
